  • I haven’t used soft pastels in a while. Whenever I do I use them sparingly. Today I want to see how far I can go layering them with acrylic paint.

    I loved this, it is very inspiring. Some beautiful colours in your pastel selection. Oh dear, I think it means another Jackson's order going in!

    I use soft pastels with acrylics and love the many different effects you can get with them. Thanks for sharing your process.

      You are welcome! Have you got any tips for combining them?

      @@jclosestudio I often use pastels to adjust colors, add texture, fine lines, marks, etc. I also use them as an underpainting and top with clear gesso before adding a pastel layer. If I want to paint over the pastels, I may apply gel medium gently or a spray fixative and then add lines or marks with acrylics.

      @@colorexplained I love the idea of using them as an underpainting and applying clear gesso. Need to try that! Thanks for the tips

    You can dilute and also fix the pastels with alcohol. A dilution 50-50 water and alcohol will work wonders but you can dilute more if it dries too fast for your brushwork

      That’s a great tip, thanks! I haven’t tried that yet. Do you use rubbing alcohol?

    We're you looking for a muddy look? (not being critical - just curious of you can get more vibrant contrast with this method)

    • @jclosestudio
      @jclosestudio  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I tend to prefer more muted colours. Pretty sure it would work with vibrant colours too.
      Just when the pastel dust mixes with the acrylic you add over the top you'd have to be mindful that those colours mix.

    Interesting. I noticed you tended to use the pastels to make lines but not to lay down larger gestures with the flat long side of the stick.. Can you tell us a bit about that choice?

    • @jclosestudio
      @jclosestudio  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Funny that you mention that. I haven't actually noticed that before! It's not a conscious choice. But I'm glad you brought it up, not II want to try using them on their side more!
