I see a lot of comments of people not understanding bath time. So I'd like to try and help out. Tortoises that grow are susceptible to what is called "pyramiding" that's irregular domed shell growth. By bathing your tortoise in chin deep water you make sure they get hydrated properly, because humidity is a factor that is important considering pyramiding. In the wild tortoises can regulate their own moisture preference by digging a tunnel or hide. In captivity that is very hard to mimic, So bathing them is a way of making sure they get hydrated enough.
at first my brother kept saying you need to bathe the freaking tortoise! but i was like why it's not like it's a fish or anything. and fortunately i listened to him. i didnt know why tho, until i saw your comment. thanks for the info xD
Honestly, yes, they're cute and I'm all "Squee" and "D'aww" over 'em but also just how you treat them made me smile and feel warm inside. It's no wonder Oogway has grown up so healthy and his shell has recovered!
thanks for the advice. Oogway was born with a shell defect and its getting better by the day. We bought him from a registered uk breeder who loves his torts and said it was healthy but was just born that way. All his other torts were in great condition. but we wanted to look after Oogway. we give him all the right food water and light. Its great to know you care.
This reminds me of when my tortoises were babies...they would climb on top of their house, and jump off, then climb back on and repeat. Over and over again.
Awww! I've always wanted a tortoise but knowing my luck I'd die before it died and nobody would want to care for it. They're beautiful, slow animals that take their time! Unfortunately, I already have 2 goldfish, 1 betta, 2 parakeets, 2 cats, a horse, 1 dog, and I'm adopting a puppy soon. Quite a handful already lol!
you're so gentle I had a brief memory of me giving baths to a terrapin, and in different occasions to hamsters. they're all tiny and I was not at all gentle, though at that time I thought that's how it's done. they must be gone now. they must have had PTSD. I was around 8-10. I feel terrible.
My tortoise gets on top of the log he sleeps in and he jumps down and faceplants, at first I was so scared when it happened but now its pretty funny to see how much of a derp he is.
i love the way u handled the turtles. i have had many of them and have seen people handle them very roughly. so great job not scaring them or making them nervous! very gentle. thumbs up if u agree:)
In the 80s I found a tortoise upsidedown in a ditch. me and dad took it home, it bit me once and ran away twice until alas he was lost forever..... I hope he's still alive, maybe he'll come back and see me one day.
Turtles* generally have webbed feet or flippers/fins for swimming; they live in water. Tortoises* have thick feet with touch scales for walking; they live on land. Turtles can live on land pretty well, compared to tortoises, who generally aren't adapted to living in water -- tortoises can't swim very well.
this one was just under a year old and grows bigger.. if you want something that stays small, maybe have a look at Terrapins, super cute and always tiny..
just like my kids, it's not forcing it's teaching. my kids were always too busy for a bath like lots of kids but I always insisted they bath. my children soon learned that bath time was fan as did my tortoises. By the way I know a few other tortoises that don't like bathing I'm guessing because they where never learned the fun side of it. My tortoises now love bathing and when they are in the garden and I get out the watering can they b-line it hoping I will shower them..
i never had one of these, but they must be one of the greates pets to have if they can outlive you. because lets face it: who wants to outlive their pets?
It shouldn't feel warm to you, but it shouldn't feel very cold either. With that in mind, the exact range should probably be between 70-85F Ideal would be between 75-80
My greek tortoise always tries to eat our feet so we put up a little fence for him (he lives in our kitchen) Somehow he still manages to climb over it and falls face down on the floor when he does.
As cute as the baby tortoises are I was most excited when the Scooby-Doo VHS cover made an appearance. Seriously, how rare is it to see a VHS these days?
Id like to get a tortoise but itll be a few years before I can do that. Just recently got a hatchling Ouachita map turtle. I love both tortoise and turtles. Hopefully once I buy a hosue ill have space enough for a proper tortoise enclosure. Great video.
We've had our turtle for 20 years. We named her peanut (: We're already thinking 60 years from now she'll be 80 and we'll be dead so she will be taken care of by one of our sons. If you get a baby tortoise you seriously need to plan where they will go even if it's to an endangered specie place or something.

NEGAN.
Glen sure loves his Popeyes.
Bath my horsfield somewhere between 30C -40C which is just above body temperature. He does not like it too cool.
"Don't worry, they're cool."
