We have 10 tortoise eggs! Digger laid 6 (healthy) eggs yesterday. Fred (yes, she is a female) laid 4 this afternoon. I took a video of Digger laying her eggs yesterday! Its a total of 8 min, if you want to cheat, the eggs are laid at the following times - 0:10; 2:57; 4:10; 6:58; and 7:50)
The mama tortoises were my dad's when he was a kid. Its so special to still have this legacy!

y’all it’s not a dead baby, it’s just an infertile egg that got cracked cause those usually have thinner shells. i was sad at first too but it’s just an infertile egg cause if it was a real dead baby then there would be blood and a lil tortoise and there was just the yolk :) don’t feel bad

Hmmmm. That sunny side up egg caught me by surprise. I wonder what happened to the shell. Sometimes our chickens lay eggs that come out with a rubbery shell - but I have never seen an egg come out so ready for the pan.

you are correct - but keep in mind that the temerature of incubation will determine the sex of the egg. If you are going to keep them, I recommend adjusting the temperature to make sure you get females. As males age they get terrotorial and will fight. For females, I would shoot for about 86 degrees. I have 25 years experience raising California Desert Tortoises, and I can confirm that every clutch we have incbated has ended up the same gender.
wow how amazing especially that they can,t see the eggs but they move them away each time with their foot . It takes them a long time as they lay around 20 eggs or more at one laying.. and were is Mr. Turtle while she is going through all this?

I saw that. When she touch the 3rd Baby I felt sad for her. I immediately went into Mommie mode. So sad for baby and she.
If the egg shell got broken inside of the turtle's body, it will cause egg binding, a painful disease for the upcoming eggs. The binded eggs need to be surgically removed, if she dosen't have that kind of surgery, she will die

The tortoise is healthy and thriving. The shell came out in the later part of the video.

San Diego is about 80f degrees right now.They grow to beabout 14 inches long. They eat vegetables and plants. The eggs are currently incubated at 95f degrees, should hatch any day now.
Tortoises can withstand high heat if they have shade and lots of water.

I have a question, do the female tortoises still lay eggs without a male present?
We still have males present. But yes, they can be fertile for years after being separated from a male.
***** Okay let me reword this, do tortoises lay unfertile eggs every year? Like female water turtles lay unfertile eggs multiple times a year. Like a woman has a period every month a female water turtle lays unfertile eggs without males present. They lay eggs till they die basically so what I'm asking is do female tortoises lay unfertile eggs every year or so as well till they die?

We generally keep the eggs in the incubator at 85 degrees. We had one clutch hatch from the ground, but they were all sickly and did not survive. If you decide to keep them in the ground, you need to watch for rodents, skunks, and water.

I think my female tortoise might be laying eggs soon. She's breathing heavy and in the same position as the tortoise in the video. She's facing outwards from her burrow so I can't see behind her.

my desert tortouse layed 7 eggs this morning....what temp do u keep the incubater so that I will have females??? I think that I've read that it should be set between 90-95 degrees. Can anyone answer this question for me???

I thought it was illegal to breed desert tortoises in captivity considering they're endangered in the wild and we don't want to harm their wild numbers by increasing captive numbers.

Probably because something happened during the birth to crack the shell
Egg without shell. Some times it happens especially if calcium is not provided in sufficient amount in food.

succesfull hatching requires dry sand, so the 02 partial pressure is high, which is crucial !
