In the course of expanding the production capacity from 5.4 Mt/y to 6.0 Mt/y the company decided to replace the existing 160 ton converters with 180 ton converters. Primetals Technologies received the order for this demanding task in October 2007.

Yes, it does! Sometimes even more than that. Iron is present in slag in a form of iron oxide (usually considered to be FeO). So, it is more like 13% of metallic iron, which is very difficult to recover since it is mixed with other oxides. Maybe, down the road, the future generations will be sifting through the slag dumps to get it recover but for now it is cheaper just to store it this way - in a pile. BTW, if an iron ore contains more than 16% of metallic iron (in oxide form) it is considered to be commercially processable.
