- I target this toothy trash fish for the first time to see if I can cook it up and make it taste good. I also discover the key to getting past the gnarly teeth and actually hooking into the gar.

That would be REALLY difficult for me to have a fish on my line and not set the hook right away. I admire your self discipline. Great adventure! Thanks for taking me along!
We need to get together and go on some adventures soon!
Agreed I’d be yanking that rod . But Semper Fi devil dog !
@@HighAdventureVideos I love how your replying like this is just a subscriber and not ur dad
Hello me ancient
I agree with you 100% I don't know if I could do it lol
“I trust weatherman as much as I trust politicians, actually that a disservice to weatherman” 😂 great comment Micah!
You putting that fish by your bare toes
Driving down from Florida, just wrapped up my vacation and switched with my wife so she can drive and you post this. Sometimes the universe just lines things up nicely 👌💪
Down from Florida..?
@@Explicit_Times you know what i mean...
Must have a long snorkel on your vehicle to drive down past Florida 😆😁
Man your wife is awesome!
@@HighAdventureVideos how do you know his wife?
50 lovely minutes!!! Thanks Micah
Hey Micah; Just a little hint for cleaning Gar, although I have never done it myself, I have seen them use actual Tin, or sheet metal scissors to cut the Armor! If I were preparing it, I would probably marinade it for a couple hours 1st./ don't over cook. ? not sure if it would be tough. Ya can't file like pan fry. Anyway, Good job today man, Lotta Work! GBU.,SM.,NZ.,✌❤🤗👍🐟😎
If you see yourself fishing for more gar in the future, I would suggest a steel leader. Takes away the worry while fishing for toothy fish like musky, pike and gar. Great video!
From "My" experience "I" don't get even close to as many takes with a steel leader. Everyone has there own system of course but ya. I like to use a good leader of 25# Floro and have noticed a significant increase in the amount of fish hooked. ✌
Steel leader and fray out some nylon rope instead of using a hook. The nylon strands get snagged in their teeth and they can't get loose. At least that's one method I've seen used where I live.
Bro I'm from Texas and my only thought was "I know this fool isn't going to try to open the gar's snout with his fingers is he?'🤔
Yes...yes you did and this is why I love this channel and been subscribed.😂😂😂
Hahahahaha thanks man!
Them gar snap back real fast and Bite to outta u
That's what I was thinking lmao I'm from Texas too and fish for gar every other week it was funny seeing him get bit Idk y lol
I'm from Texas as well and I got anxiety every time he pulled a gar into his kayak.... Don't wanna mess around with gars man... They'll slice you open and puncture you before you even know what happened.
@@StephenMooreOfficial I caught a 4 footer in San leon and forgot hiw bad they were . I went to pick it up by the gills and the scales sliced me up got underneath my thumb nail and slice my wrist open
I eat carp using the same recipe. I steam the fillets in a covered skillet in a quarter inch of water then drain off the water and put the fillets in a large bowl. Crumble the fillets with clean hands and pick out all the bones. Will take awhile. Then mix in breadcrumbs and chopped onions and stuff. Salt pepper and lemon pepper usually. Press into balls or patties and fry. They're awesome. I do big trout the same way. Btw a pair of tinsnips makes short work of those gar.
Micah , when you where showing the hook on the gars mouth and it jumped and hit the camera , I may have thrown my cereal everywhere , made me jump super bad XD thnks for the video! tight lines!
So glad you picked the right team when you moved here man! Maybe I'll spot you out on the lake sometime!
Watching you remove that hook from the gar’s mouth reminded me of when my husband had a chunk of his finger bitten off while removing a hook from a piranha. Glad that didn’t happen to you. My husband was okay in the end, and we have great pictures and video!! As always, we enjoy your videos!
In Louisiana, you either make gar balls which is like your gar patties, when you fry it like a regular fish in fish fry it has a chicken consistency, and the last way is normally in a tomato gravy
Micah I think this is one of your best vids ever, action packed as always, great production quality, yet has an early High Adventure Videos vibe
And it's totally not because I'm just biased and have always wanted to see you eat gar :)
people will always say a fish is garbage because they don't want to put the work into prepping it. Great vid my man.
@High Adventure Videos Micha, glad you took my advice in making gar as fish cakes. It's made that way in south Texas and most parts of Louisiana.
Hey Micah you can parboil small gar chunks for 2-3 minutes then batter and deep fry them or just run whole fillets straight through a regular meat grinder. There are some really cool fish patty recipes out there and I look forward to the next cook-off! Careful now Me Ancient and your bro are watching these vids... lol
You and Ace sound so similar. The cadence and how upbeat and excited for life. Love both of y'all @acevideos 😁❤️
I bowfish for gar occasionally, and they are very good to eat. I don't get too fancy, but I'd like to try this recipe out myself.
Usually I just cut the filets into little "nugget" sized pieces and fry them. They seem more firm than a lot of freshwater fish, but taste is not fishy. Cliche to say, but it tastes like chicken. As for how to get through their scale's, best thing I've found is tin snips. It sounds like overkill, but their scales are extremely tough, and it'll make a nice clean cut easily.
just a tip from a garfisherman if you hold it upside down they go docile making it easy to handle
Oh thanks!
I have tried gar once. I just diced into cubes, battered and deep fried. Not bad, been thinking about trying it again.
Love the longer vids Micah do another cook off vs ace with me ancient and maybe even your other family as well sometime. Your whole family is awesome and so wholesome.
these videos are so unexplainably entertaining
I lost it when the gar freaked out LOL
I love how you have long videoes not like 20 minutes. Awesome video
“Heh,heh. I’m in danger” 😂😂 cracked me up 😀 love the video
Looks as thick as the fish they had on the movie " water world " :p , Happy Sunday to u an your family ❤😸
Thank you! You as well! 🤙🏽
Micah!!!!!!! I love the Clemson Tigers Tshirt
Don't you love when a plan comes together.. awesome vid.
You got it Micha. Next time cook the patties just the same then make a gravy and put the patties in the gravy and serve over rice. We call that garballs and gravy. Most stores sell that on Friday for lunch. Loving you in Louisiana
I use a angle grinder to do the initial cut. It takes no time. You can deep fry them or make our Louisiana favorite gar balls.. they taste so good!
Not gonna lie, I totally jumped every time those gars lunged from your grip ha! Sometime the best tasting fish are the “garbage fish”. More for us 😉. Fresh lemon juice and tarter sauce, delicious! Nice catch bro!
I've ate gar 3 ways, patties is by far the best, grilled they are so so, fried they are ok but patties are the best.
Gar balls are just like patties but can incorporate more food like mashed potatoes
Very fun watch! Not sure if you'd be up for this but this is what I found works best: Gut the fish. That's it. Get a decent sized fire going. Once it embers, part them and lay the fish in belly down. Cover with coals and embers. Let it cook for about 15 minutes or longer depending on size. Uncover coals and remove fish with tongs or heavy grilling spatula. Believe it or not, the scales are so tough that they don't "burn" and they become so rigid that you can pull if off in one piece and reveal amazing plumped and juicy cooked gar underneath. I usually season after or serve with rice and condiments. Delicious everytime. I did this by accident once while I bow fishing for gar. Killed the gar and tossed them in the fire and covered them. When we went to put out the fire, we were being dumb and poking around as dumb teens do and tried to pull out the fish to see what became of it and the scales came off like a shell. Underneath, a juicy, sweet and well cooked gar.
A disservice to weathermen 🤣🤣🤣- no doubt brother. Love the content and your energy, cheers!
I commented on your awesome replacement tooth in the live night ocean fishing video the other day. Pulling in two nice gar caught in the bill is crazy! Great video Microphone
What you need is a pair of tin snips. I haven't tried gar but have see several people use those. They also nail the gars head to a board which make it easier to control the fish slipping around.
Next time you do a gar catch and cook bring your Jon boat u will have more space to stand up and pull it instead of the kayak, but keep up the good work!❤
10:20 to 10:25 it's just 5 seconds of absolute chaos 😂😂
the fact that he got that fish on such a small boat is just so impressive
keep up the good work
Kayak catfish does it in the same size kayak but catches 60+ pound catfish there are people who catch 100+lb gar in kayaks his 10lb gar isn't anything special
@@nicolasmoon672 dang
@@kon-vz2dd I honestly don't like this guy cause how stupid he acts with these fish like sticking your hand inside its mouth? What did ya think was gonna happen then he calls it a trash fish I've never heard someone call them that
@@nicolasmoon672 i didn't need a whole paragraph just for you to explain why you don't like this singular human
@@kon-vz2dd you sure did
I really glad you like it and was willing to give it a try. A lot of people are missing out on gar because of the Notion that they taste terrible. Which is far from the case. You butchered the hell out of it. But that’s to be Expected and understandable since that was your first time processing a gar. You needed long cutting Metal Shears or all purpose heavy duty scissors to cut them out that Tough shell. And you can prepare them any kind of way and they still taste fantastic. Even fried. You just have to cut the fillets into thinner cuts. Love your videos man keep them coming
there are lots of fish that are considered " trash fish " in the west that most of us Asians like to eat I guess it comes down to knowing how to cook and eat them
Agree. And i would never call a fish "trash" that survived millions of years because i don´t like it. They deserve to live. LG from germany bud
@Nicholas Ya sorry, that was the biologist speaking outta me.
We just have a lot of good tasting fish here that some species of fish are just not on the list.
I mean, Carp is a highly sought after fish throughout the world but in North America we don't really eat it. Many of us personally do but it it's just not an industry.
No one in their right mind would take a Carp over a Walleye, Trout, Salmon, Crappie, and so on, here.
Different waters brings different flavors so we can't really compare things apples to apples.
Also, we say "Trash" fish but that doesn't necessarily mean the fish is Trash. Snakehead is delicious but it's a trash fish in the sense that they were illegally introduced. Same goes for Burbot in some of the waters here in Utah. Great fish but it's trash and doesn't belong in our waters.
I mean yea you can technically eat anything. But a vast majority would rather target crappie, bass, Striper, catfish, panfish, walleye, trout, etc. a fish that’s naturally delicious. Fish you kinda have to “dress up” to make taste good get that “trash fish” tag
@@DylanPWN Gar are native to the United States pal. "Great fish but it's trash and doesn't belong in our waters." Like actually where do you get this from.
Good Nit! Loved the drone shots. Loved the underwater shots..
Good show bra love the Clemson shirt..❤️🇯🇲🇯🇲👊🏿
I used to live in travelers rest, SC close to lakes Jocassee and Keowee, never did any fishing when i was up there, but ive since gotten into it since moving back to Jacksonville, FL. Going back up to SC soon for a visit, this video inspired me to try for some gar!
Another banger keep it up bro 💪🏽
Thanks!
As someone from Louisiana I saw the best way to cook them is to make them into gar balls, which is putting it in a food processor and and spices and peppers , etc then frying them
I love gar patties usually put the garfish through the grinder or chopup in food processor
Good videos Micah, if you are going to do more catching cooks with tough exterior scales and skin on fish pick yourself up a pair of emt/paramedic scissors, you can get them online for less than $5 a pair, I am an emergency medical technician and these scissors will cut through pennies, jeans, metal, clothing, leather etc. I use them for fishing as well because they work great cutting gar fish shells/skin. Just a little tip for you to try
I. Love you because everything you catch you always catch and clean
What doesn't look appetizing at first. Doesn't necessarily mean it would taste terrible. 💯👍💯💯💯💯Great video as usual 👍💯💯💯👍💯👍💯
Use garden sheers the best is either fish cakes with hush puppy mix or beer batter for fish and chips. Never cooked the gar first usually make gar balls with raw gar.
you should definitely try it other ways very interesting watching you try different species different ways an your recipes are always very interesting. love your videos.
Gar is good by itself. Very clean fish. Love it fried as steaks
I found a little rub and throwing a slab of gar right on the charcoal grill turns out damn good. Has the texture of a pork chop.
I'll take these 'trash' fish any day.
You becoming one of my favorite TH-camr top 5 Right behind Ace videos, blue Gabe, Deer meat for dinner,
Gar patties ...very interesting video! I'm glad I clicked over to watch this. I found you from your brother's channel.
0:25 lol. I feel you there😅
liked the content, thought it was too long. keep the content up. been a subscriber for a long time!
The rope lure should be a nylon/cotton material that can be frayed out and then brushed. The goal is to pitch it out to them to initiate their instinct to bite. Once they bite it, it’s teeth gets tangled up in the rope fibers! I use wire snips to crack its shell and love em fried.
Buzzing a long one to watch in bed later, love to see yours and acers vids both seem really nice genuine guys 😀
Great first gar catch n cook!
Tin snips work great for cleaning gar. We like them as fish tacos.
That is a good idea . For that fish . It started out looking messed up but you did something good with it
Micah, you had a "wind knot" aka rats nest on your pole... take off all your terminal tackle and troll the pole with just the line behind you all the way out(all line off you reel too the reel knot, then reel in normally while still trolling normally) ... Also ALWAYS use ball-bearing swivels to troll spinning reels bro! Dig the content bronamath!!! 🤙🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Haha are we maybe going to see a future bro vs bro gar cook-off ? That would be sweet
100%!!
Those gar patties look so good!
Good shit Michah !! This is one of your best videos
Another one! ☝️ thanks for another good video bro
It reminds me of what my grandmother used to do with Pike here in Norway. She made fish cakes, but she grinded it raw because of all the small bones in the Pike. They're delicious and even if it's kind of a trash fresh water fish, she knew how to make it taste delightful. Do you have Northern pike in the US? We always wanted to catch rainbow or Salmon or Yellow Perches because they tasted so good. Perch is a feisty and fun fish to catch when they get close to 1 kg(2.2 pounds).
God bless and lots of love from Norway.

love you and your brother videos man. great job
Mika lives showing off his kayak lol that thing is sweet
Boil chunks of it in crawfish/crab boil , Melt some butter. Poor mans lobster , Delicious. Bigger the gar better the meat, Tin snips, and box knives/razor knives are what we use down here to clean them 👌🏻
I like you was excited to try a gar. It was about the same size and just as difficult to fillet. I breaded and deep fried like I do most of my fish. It was rubbery and it had absolutely no taste and the consistency of the meat was not good. So now it is catch and release. There is an over abundance of them here in NC, literally hundreds of them breaking the surface all the time. So come catch a load. :-).
Bro, That was a top water day!!! You did good!!
Hey can you please make a largemouth bass video. I miss you catching those and those are what I fish for so it’s cool seeing you do it to
Its the wind knot for me lmao hook has spun your line up 😂
Another great high adventure. Cheers.
So dang cool, man 😎 Out there living the life
We pressure cook the meat and grind it up, add flour, egg, and lemon pepper seasoning, and onion, then fry it up and it's tasty. Alligator gar is the best. We cook it on the grill like steak and it's so good
Great video. So much fun
Wire snips are the best way to get through that armor😁
nice catch, :)
And hope you the best.
Gar fish patties and gar fish balls are so good my grand mother used to make them a lot also the bowfin made the same way Is so good 🍽🤤🍺
Anybody flinch when the gar snapped?
👇
So uhhmmm when it jumped at the camera I slightly died because I jumped and scream 😂
I was watching your last stream. And you mentioned wanting to hunt. If you ever want to do a colorado hunt let me know. We also have some fishing not just related to stream trout fishing
I use tin snips. It’s some of the best eating fish I’ve had.
I just made a comment exactly like yours. Then I went through and saw your comment. (Whoops) Oh well. Aye! Tin snips are the bomb for Gar Cleaning.
The meat looks a little like the meat from a monkfish. I imagine it tastes great! Cool video ☺️
I trust the weather man as much as I trust my baby momma XD
Next time you’re in Oregon would love to take you out salmon, tuna, bottom fishing, Kokanee or any other fishing that’s available at that time!
“MaMacITa” 🤣🤣🤣🤟🏽
I live on lake Murray and catch 12 pound striper almost every trip hopefully we meet one day
You haven’t just learned to fish, you’ve got major instincts of fishing
Love the vids man keep up the great work. I live down is south Mississippi and I caught 6 foot alligator gar.
Fun Fact!
Alligator Gar are literal living dinosaurs! They existed around the time that the dinosaurs were alive, and can grow up to over 10 feet long!
I've seen it done with alligator gar but never with long nose gar I'm stoked it's good bro !!
A trick I found out is to use barbless hooks it make it easier to unhook
you and your bro have to hit up Ontario canada for a fishing trip/challenge one time. You’d love the lakes up here!
Awesome!! I love gar but haven’t caught them.
