I will fight this sickness echos down the halls of your mind as a suddenly bored and fatigued voice of Robert Smith lets out a flat yet emotionally intact, 'Thank You, Goodnight'
Gabriela Mendoza It was a row about Robert thinking Simon didn't want to pay his bar tab. That's the truth. This entire tour was beset by drugs, alcohol, depression and just an overall very dark mood. I'd pay anything to go back and see this tour.
Paul Metzger all of that is true.....I'm surprised they survived that tour without anybody dying. It was that bad. I was too young to see this tour.....I was seven years old in 1982. But I would have loved to see this tour....it's a shame that a show was never properly filmed. You have a few clips here and there of French TV shows but that's about it.
No kidding, this in my humble opinion is the cure at their best live in 1982 I would give anything to have seen them on this tour. I own a bunch of the live shows It my favorite stuff to listen to
(“even after 15 years, you still get fucking IDIOTS winning… this is called ‘pornography’…” - robert smith. lol i wonder if that brief period around 2 mins where he starts playing the james bond theme song was purposeful & ironic, or just accidental.. i feel like more people didn’t care for this song as add-riddled pop fan kids, & it takes like 3 & a half minutes to get to the lyrics.. but i just realized this is one of my favorite cure songs.) “a hand in my mouth… as a life spills into the flowers… we all look "so perfect…” as we all fall down… in an electric glare… as the old man cracks with age… she found his last picture… in the ashes of the fire……. an image of the queen… echoes 'round the sweating bed… sour yellow sounds inside my head… in books… and films… and in life…. and in heaven….. the SOUND OF SLAUGHTER… as your body turns…. but it’s too late…… but… it’s too late……. one more day like today, and i’ll kill you…….. a desire for flesh……. and real blood……….. and i’ll watch you drown in the shower……………. pushing my life through your open eyes… (“i must fight this sickness…… find a cure……….. i must fight this sickness………………”)“
NiouxsieNioux I'd wager it was a comment about the World Cup....maybe England got beat by France that week? It's just a thought....I'm probably offbase
Maybe it was related to these two events that occurred the night before? British ship Atlantic Conveyor carrying Chinook helicopters & destroyer HMS Coventry were hit in Falkland war: 39 crew members died 26th European Cup: Aston Villa beats Bayern Munich 1-0 at Rotterdam Not sure what the 15 years relates to - what happened in 1967? Maybe it was related to an election or something?
Tbh I don't see it. This sounds completely different to Joy Division to me. Instrumentally, with Lol on the drums making for a much simpler drum beat compared to Stephen Morris' technical handiwork. Plus Peter Hook used to use his bass more like a rhythm guitar, whereas Simon Gallup is much more of a traditional player, continuing to use it the whole way through instead of coming in and out. Add to the fact that Smith is a much more technically advanced guitarist then Curtis who knew the bare minimum. Technically the bands are not alike at all. To me all they share is a common theme of darkness and despair...
@tomasrichardson9262 you're telling me the drums don't sound at all similar to Atrocity Exhibition? And I'm not talking about just technically comparing each member to another, more the overall sound
@mikerophone235 I mean, I'm not saying it doesn't necessarily have a similar sound or anything, I just don't feel as if Robert was as much inspired by Joy Division as much as he just liked them, they did open for one of The Cure's shows in 1979, after all. I mean the most comparable JD to The Cure song in my opinion would be The Eternal to The Holy Hour, especially the Group Home Demo Version of the Holy Hour. Again though, I think that might just be an extension of their similar dark wave sound. Also Morris used a lot more cymbal and high hat and stuff compared to Lol who, although I think is underappreciated, was a very simple drummer which is why I don't really see the resemblance. I'd say Boris Williams or Jason Cooper are most similar because Boris was always the fastest Cure drummer and Jason uses a lot of crashes rather than a lot of snare... I will say though that I don't think the album version of this song has similar drums to atrocity exhibition, but I can see the resemblance in this live version
One of my favourite Cure periods - this is just absolutely superb - and those photos are GORGEOUS....

Those drums kick ass on this version.
after this show, Robert and Simon have a fist fight at the bar
why did they have a fist fight?

If Kafka's books had a musical equivalent, then it is The Cure's albums like 'Pornography' and 'Faith.'

England won world cup in 1966 , that's what he meant
@David Mentalist Lmao no it wasn’t. The 1982 World Cup didn’t even start yet, and England didn’t win anyway.
@@USMCLP so what
Listen to this and tell me that Joy Division/Ian weren't a HUGE influence on Roberts writing/mood/psyche at the time. To me it's undeniable

@mikerophone235 Sorry, that turned into a bit of a rant 😭
@@tomasrichardson9262 that's ok! You bring up many good points
