      @@thesynthsofgus I used to have an old one.. late 70's model was still working fine in 1999 and it only needed some work in 2014, if the new Minimoog has the same durability as the old one, you get an instrument you can play for decades. Many other electronics you've bought will have bitten the dust by then.
      And it is a fine instrument, you can drop me off at any kind of gig with it, a rave or a jazz club doesn't matter, it's very intuitive and the layout is such that you almost immediately know it by heart, which makes it a great player synth.

    If a synth inspires you, it enables you to make the music you hear in your head, then that synth is 100% worth it to you. Would I personally pay $5K for a Roland Jupiter 6? No. But I bought the OB-X8 without blinking :) Someone else will buy that Jupiter 6 because it is the key to enabling their creativity. Congrats on your Minimoog purchase, Gus!

    Greetings from London.
    I totally agree with you, and I'm happy about the re-issue as the originals had their problems. The tuning drifting as they warmed up. I hope they resolved all of the old probs with some modern tech.
    But I agree the minimoog is like a Rolls Royce! , the click of a switch, is like the sound and feel of shutting the door of the your Rolls!
    So keep up the posts I look forward to your future videos.

    Very honest and self aware point of view! Passion isn't always rational and everyone must define what's still reasonable or justifiable for themselves as long as it doesn't affect anyone else (too much). When it comes to the MiniMoog, I'm not so passionate, I'm completely happy with the sound and the design (and of course the price) of my Behringer Model D but I paid a lot of money for other synthesizers, my most expensive one is a Jupiter 4. Some people paid a fortune for an original TB-303 and some still do which is probably an even more extreme example considering the cheap build and limitations of the OG.
    Couldn't agree more on the options you mentioned! Enjoy your life and have fun with the instruments you have!

    Great video. I agree with your views. People on the internet just like to trash things to justify their own purchases over things they could have bought. A real key with the Moog reissues is that they will hold their value better than the Behringer stuff will and you can sell it later at that price or higher if your opinions change.
    As far as cost goes, I know lots of people that complain how expensive some Moog, Sequential, etc instruments are but they happily buy up a dozen of more $300 to $500 dollar synth boxes and only use a few of them while the others sit around. To each their own. I've found that's it's nice to have the variety of many smaller, cheaper devices but you do spend lots of time arranging and setting up gear and your studio space from project to project. Not that it's bad to just mess with gear and have fun, but it is a separate sort of activity from music making.
    I'm currently engrossed with a Korg 700 FS reissue and I love it. It is not a synth that I ever had a huge desire to track down in vintage form or was even terribly excited about when the reissue can about but I have been putting in far too much overtime at work lately and just decided 'what the hell'. I'm really glad I grabbed one. They are brilliant through a delay!. It's certainly an instrument people think is expensive and pointless. The Korg 700 shares the instant great sounds and play experience of the minimoog, though it is obviously built to a lower price point. The immediacy is great and Korg managed to add preset storage and a spring reverb into the whole mix.
    Anyways, I'm rambling on again. Keep up the great videos!

      My two main mono synths are the Minikorg 700 FS and the Minimoog reissue….I’m feeling so validated right now because I find them to be the best mono synths on the market yet they have gotten the most crap online due to cost….people don’t realize that you get what you pay for and the workflow and the sound of these two synths is PERFECT. They also compliment each other PERFECTLY. Playing the Moog into the Korg’s Stereo Spring Reverb and essentially having a 6 Oscillator synth with Moog fatness and Korg ring mod and traveler filter weirdness is so endless.

  • @_P_M_
    @_P_M_ ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's a luxury item, and you could have bought many more synths for that same $5k, but what matters is if you are happy with it. I want to buy a tadpole trike. They are EXPENSIVE, and I'm choking on the price but I love cycling so it's probably worth it for me. My problem with $5k reissue synths are all of the people saying that nothing can sound like it, or that nothing can sound like a vintage one. That is simply not true. Behringer Model D is a circuit-for-circuit recreation and it sounds just like a Moog. So, if all you wanted was that Moog sound you don't need to spend $5k. But if it's more about having an actual physical Moog D to play with then you pretty much have to buy the Moog because nothing else will scratch that itch. The important thing here is that the free market provides options for everyone.

    • @thesynthsofgus
      @thesynthsofgus  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeap. If a Behringer makes you happy then good! What bothers me is people who have Bheringers hating on people who have the Minimoog. Is like they want to feel better by telling people they should have bought the Behringer one lol

    If all you are interested in is the sound then there are many options for very low price then the Real Minimoog such as Arturia Mini V soft synth, $149 or buy the entire V collection when it's on sale for $400. Behringer Poly D at $400 while not the same quality of build as the Moog it's a decent quality device and is about 97% identical sounding and function as the Moog Minimoog. You buy the Minimoog mainly because you respect and love Moog and want to support them but it's to high a price for Me.

I have to agree with some people, about it being over-priced for a monophonic synth, but it's all about the "Legacy" and the "sound". It's like the difference between Rolax and Timex watches. Personally, I'm happy with my recently restored vintage early January '74 Mini.

    Congrats on your acquisition of a Model D! I have the 2016 reissue, which at the time was a little over 3 grand; I guess those few extra bells & whistles drove up the premium hahaha. Don’t let anyone convince you that you made a foolish purchase, most who have these types of arguments are salty for not being able to afford the instrument themselves. There are indeed intangibles in the original Model D, and also the Re-Issue. Being in the same room with the sound, hearing the mingling harmonics, and turning the knobs to a specific result is worth the expenditure if you can swing the price. Regarding the OB-X8, I too prefer my P10r4. Regarding "overpriced", I've also been in the same conversation regarding my Teenage Engineering OP-1 Field. It's actually one of my favorite pieces. I truly love it. The workflow and "happy accidents" are worth the expenditure. Regarding the old Model D sounding better, I think this new re-issue will sound just like and old one in 15 years. The thru hole resistors and caps are the same as the old ones.

  • @MistyMusicStudio
    @MistyMusicStudio ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I want to start by saying it's hard to put a price on inspiration, and so long as you can responsibly afford the instrument that inspires you, it will always be worth it. Now to poke a little fun at it 😜
    I live in Asheville so it's super easy for me to hit up the Moog factory and try out everything on the floor. As someone who owns a Behringer Model D, I LAUGHED at the $5k price tag after playing the Moog reissue lol. I thought "how embarrassing for Moog, to release something with less features and identical sound to the Behringer version at 75x the price". And the Behringer is built like a tank too, so I wasn't really impressed by the build quality.
    To me, synths like the Prophet 10, Novation Summit, and even the all-digital Roland Juno-X offer so much more, and for less money. BUT! I'm really glad you're enjoying your new synth, and I hope you don't let the opinions of others take away from the joy of playing it!

Jupiter Xm, Prophet Rev 2, Roland SE-02, Korg Minilogue and, years ago, everything from Korg 01w, Triton and Roland Fantom. I got a Minimoog Model D 2022 reissue three weeks ago. I worked to get a great patch on it. AND I HAVEN’T touched a knob in three weeks. It’s absolutely unbelievable. Great vid. First off, I love that you answer comments. That’s a great idea. But just wanted to say I definitely agree with all of your sentiments towards the Model D. I had a 2016 version and the 2nd AND 3rd oscillator went out on my 2016 reissue and unfortunately by the time I needed it to get fixed they already discontinued it and told me they didn’t have the parts to fix it, so I traded it for a 59 Les Paul Custom shop. So I was incredibly annoyed to have that happen but the Les Paul fortunately ended up being one of my favorite guitars.
    I will say, not having it definitely was a huge deal after awhile. I have a Moog One, Sub 37, Electric Blue Voyager, Prophet 10, UDO super 6 and not a single one of those synths could I get some of the vintage filter sweep and resonance sounds from the likes of the Model D. The noise source as well is extreme unique. Even though I love all my other Synths and they are are amazing in their own way. Some of my favorite recordings to this day is stuff I recorded on the Model D. That synth changed my life as far as recording went. And…. as far as using it in a band scenario. I ended up using it live because of no saved resets made the performance more interesting to where I had to learn all the parts and patches and dial them in pretty quick before the song. Sometimes I would be off and that In itself would make the song more unique compared to other versions of the particular song. It’s by far the most fun and amazing bass synth to use live. After traded it I started using my Sub 37 which is great but it wasn’t the same inspiring experience.
    There’s just nothing quite like a Minimoog Model D. It helped me learn synthesis and my GF also learned some basic synthesis from that synth and now she has a solid understanding for when she is recording with other synths.
    Also, I am in huge agreement that I have never been more excited for a synth to reissue than this beast. My GF went to the Moog Factory a couple years ago and she let some of the worker know how much I missed mine and asked if they would ever reissue it and at the time they said it will likely never be back. I am SO GLAD they were wrong. I couldn’t afford the ridiculous 8 grand ppl were selling the 2016 versions.
    And FINALLY I got my order in for a Mahogany version which should look just like the one I had. I was legit sad for years to think I would never get to record and perform with a D again. I’ve even have a Model D phone case for years and my GF use to mess with me to change the case cause I didn’t have the synth anymore and it was making me sad to look at it and remember it’s gone. But what a blessing to have it back in production and to be able to have one again.
    Glad to see someone the same as me who understands what it’s like to play it in person and understand how you really can’t compare the D verses any clone or any other mono synth. It truly is the GOAT synth for Live, studio, or education for synthesis for ME.
    Last thing I’ll say is the reason it’s the best is the “inspiration” you get compared to other synths. The music that it helped me write, sounds I was able to create. Bass tones, layered recorded chords. Nothing will ever touch the inspiration of the Model D. God Bless.

    My first rock hero was Gary Numan when he got to number 1 way back in 1979 with Are Friends Electric and then Cars..I was just 12...His music got me into playing but it wasn't until I was well into my 40s that I actually got to try out a Polymoog 280a and a Minimoog at a synth museum in Switzerland..
    I have to say that out of the dozens of synths I had owned and played up until that point that immediately upon playing the Minimoog I had to have one! I imported one from Japan that the dealer said was in 100% working order which it wasn't, it took 3 separate sets of repairs to really make it 100% working but every step of the way has been worth it.
    The Minimoog oozes mojo, don't know why but they are superb...you feel like your driving a sonic tank when playing one, it's a very difficult experience to explain, I'm guessing Minimoog owners will know what I mean

    Great video and discussion. I personally made a compromise of getting a Behringer Model D and to satisfy my Moog lust, I have a Sub Phatty and Minitaur. The circuit of the Minitaur that gives it a higher analog resolution in the bass frequencies (and what caps the high note limit) is the reason I wanted that extra oomph in the bass. The Minitaur bass is that little extra that even the Minimoog can't quite do, even with the third oscillator. It isn't a need for everyone since the Mini can certainly do bass well, but between my two Moog units, and the B Model D for tri-note tricks, I feel I'm covered. Even though the new ones cost $5K, I'd say that they're worth it, even more so than a Moog One. Not that a Moog One is a bad synth, but the Mini is sort of the Stradivarius of synths. Old or new, they're not just an instrument, they're classic like an antique chair, like a piece of quality furniture they are an investment. They'll only appreciate in value. They may lack a few modern day common things like dedicated Decay before the Sustain levels in the envelopes, Osc Sync, and some synths like the Odyssey, have more mod routings, but even with it's simplicity of controls, the internal circuitry sounds borderline acoustic. It sounds and feels alive.

      I disagree. The Poly D is not the original, that's its biggest (if not its only) "flaw". If the Behringer were the true original with the build quality it happens to have, I don't think anyone would spend that much more money on top for better build quality but less features.
      The maker of this video was very honest about the value the MiniMoog has for him personally which is what made me appreciate the video so much. He doesn't glorify the MiniMoog, he is aware of the passion that made him pay so much money for it. He lnows that this was a rather irrational decision and therefore hard to comprehend for others. Please don't devalue all this honesty and self awareness by trying to make the Behringer remake (that makes a lot more sense to many many others) look bad.

All the boards are hand soldered and the whole synthesizer is put together by hand . This unit is 95% faithful to the original including the amazing sound . Rick Wakeman collects minimoogs and Dave Smith(RIP) had one by his side . I respect the knowledge and their amazing talent . Today all synths are made with surface mounted components due to their complexity and to control production cost ,not the MiniMoog a rarity in today's world, a heirloom you can leave to your love ones . Marshall amplification makes a hand wired amplifier $ 4000 and a DSL 100 with more channels more features for $ 1000 . Ask any guitar player which one they rather have. I truly understand your point of view and wholeheartedly agree! I got mine recently and I love it you only live once!! SEE Rick Wakeman Waveshaper TV EP 13 . An inspiring story. Regards PCP.

    You get my respect for spending that amount of money for a sound that has been replicated on other clones. As you said, it's also about the feel of the instrument, not necessarily the sound that inspires to play.

    IMHO there are 3 PERFECT interface/workflow synths - Prophet 5, MonoPoly, and MiniMoog. (Matriarch is very good, but NOT in the same class) That they also all sound fabulous is certainly a great bonus. 😀For some, including you it seems, there is additional value to owning the "real" thing and that is totally legitimate. Personally, I cannot currently justify such prices. If I ever can it will instead be a MidiMini V30 because it has the SAME workflow, sound, ultra build and component quality plus a bit more voice flexibility for $2k less, BUT that is just me and THIS does seem right now like it was not a mistake for you.

    If someone commented publicly in the comments section there is no privacy to respect. They put their opinion out there to the public.
    1. Is $5,000 a lot of money? Yes. Is it poor value? Objectively NO. The OG Mini's sell for double that and more. 2016's re-issues were selling for $6k before the current re-issue came out. So, will it hold its value? Almost certainly.
    2. Is the Mini just re-visting the past? Sure, just like the Fender Stratocaster and Gibson Les Paul. Or the acoustic piano. Is Moog wasting its resources revisiting the past instead of making new gear? Not by looking at their product catalog. Obviously - just like Strats and Les Pauls - there is obviously still a market for new Mini's.
    3. No comment on clones other than to say, if you are on a budget and $5k on the real deal is just not in reach, will the better clones do the job for maybe 90% of users? Absolutely. That is why there is a market for those products.
    4. You can't make a polyphonic Mini (increasing the on board circuits by a factor of at least 6) AND sell it at the same price. That's stupid.
    5. Old one plays better? Seriously??? I would much rather have a re-issue than my old classic Mini (paid $200 for it in 1986). Far superior modern touch sensitive keybed, new electronics instead of dodgy 50 year old electronics (mine is from 1973), tuning stability, MIDI.

    As someone that creates things from scratch, it's hard for me to complain about prices of things. People do not think about all the variables that go into end prices. Were all the parts handcrafted? Yea? Then you're paying a little bit more for the time, research and expertise that went in over time to achieve the product that you have now.
    You're not paying a high-school student who has no experience to photoshop a picture for you. You're buying a professionals years of time and experience that went into making the product. You're paying for their time sourcing all the parts to complete the product you are buying. Are the parts needed in low supply and hard to get and theres a high demand? That will likely get factored into the end price. On top of all of this, you're helping keep the people that make these synths employed and able to provide for their families.
    Is $5,000 a lot of money? Yes. Is it justified with something of this magnitude with quality and history behind it? Absolutely.
    You didn't make a bad purchase. You made a stellar purchase.
    Enjoy your synth, dude. 😃
