I found this story to be very fascinating, and the host to be a very well read on this subject. She is without a doubt the most beautiful host I've ever listened to.
She presented it so well, detailed and lively. This is the best and most well decsribed documentary on Sparta I have ever watched in my entire life. She made it real and very easy to understand, and it's very interesting too.
She forgot to mention this is the mythos Spartans spread after Thermopylae to never have to go to war based on a fierce reputation. They created a mythos of a super soldier Spartan to discourage rival city states from starting wars. They were propagandists more than they were warriors.

Love this video. I already knew some of the Spartan history but this taught me more. Spartan's were brutal. Hollywood mostly show's the heroic part of their culture but doesn't really mention their dark part of history. Enslaving other people, killing their own etc. They were definitely some of the TOUGHEST people in their time (according to history) and we are still very intrigued with them till this day.

To my knowledge learned in my teenage years while studying to become a teacher and in studying the history of education I found that the amount of slaves was so overwhelming compared to the slavers class that the risk of rebellion was a permanent condition. The slavers were in danger of dying at the hands of the slaves at any moment if they were not prepared. Military training was indispensable in order to maintain order and submission over the slaves. It is known that a daily raid over the slaves camp was performed as a form of training and to kill the youngest and strongest slaves. This was the fundamental reason for the entire life requirement of investing into the arts of combat and physical condition. Terror was the method of domination over the slaves.
Indeed, the closest we have to ancient Sparta today is the police state that is run by an autocracy such as Putin's Russia, Red China, Myanmar, and the like where the common people are like the Greeks enslaved by the Spartans.

I know enough of Sparta and each time regardless of depth and insight I confirm the profound sociopathic nature of all class divided eras and " cultures" . in particular the Spartans are anecdotal and prototype of the failed attempts of a dehumanized society to survive in a world made as their image. One of brutal animalistic clashes and devoid of love and solidarity . one of disrespect for human life and dignity. This are lessons of history to avoid and learn how a society should not be organized. Nothing more could be learned form them. A good book to read is the Spartan Army by John Lazenby , his conclusions are far different to the traditional view of Sparta , in other words Sparta had more than 3000 Hoplites to control an empire , the other note is 700 perekoi hoplites also fought at Thermopylae, get his book it is a very worthwhile

I think Sparta worshipped the same Greek gods as Athens etc. My hunch (without actual knowledge on the topic) is they were probably fairly impartial about death.

But it sounds as if the main personal gain is ceasing to exist - similar to Eastern Religions. Perhaps their lives were so difficult that non-existence sounded good? In comparison, the Christian God combines the personal aspect of the ancient Greek gods, with an omnipresent aspect, like the Eastern concept. He is personal like a father: he made us and wants relationship with us. He took responsibility for our errors like a father does a child's broken window, by coming to earth once to pay for those as Jesus. But being beyond, he has the power to grant eternal life to those who accept his way.
Changes in music to signal in battle were carried well into the 19th century CE. You can look up the exact bugle calls to signal advance, gather, hold or retreat. (coincidentally the 19th century is also when due to advances in killing machines battle formations for infantry were phased out) While not used in battle anymore the bugle is still used to signal certain daily activities in the US military. (I cannot speak for other countries but I imagine several of them still hold similar traditions as well)

To my knowledge learned in my teenage years while studying to become a teacher and in studying the history of education I found that the amount of slaves was so overwhelming compared to the slavers class that the risk of rebellion was a permanent condition. The slavers were in danger of dying at the hands of the slaves at any moment if they were not prepared. Military training was indispensable in order to maintain order and submission over the slaves. It is known that a daily raid over the slaves camp was performed as a form of training and to kill the youngest and strongest slaves. This was the fundamental reason for the entire life requirement of investing into the arts of combat and physical condition. Terror was the method of domination over the slaves.
Indeed, the closest we have to ancient Sparta today is the police state that is run by an autocracy such as Putin's Russia, Red China, Myanmar, and the like where the common people are like the Greeks enslaved by the Spartans.

We have two main historical references for Sparta, one a direct one from Xenophon who lived amongst the Spartans and Plutarch whom came a few centuries later. Both indicate that homosexuality was despised by the Spartans and and if an adult mentor abused a child that was given to him he would face severe legal penalties.

I know enough of Sparta and each time regardless of depth and insight I confirm the profound sociopathic nature of all class divided eras and " cultures" . in particular the Spartans are anecdotal and prototype of the failed attempts of a dehumanized society to survive in a world made as their image. One of brutal animalistic clashes and devoid of love and solidarity . one of disrespect for human life and dignity. This are lessons of history to avoid and learn how a society should not be organized. Nothing more could be learned form them. If something good could be learned from that experience let me know and I'll gladly share it with any historian , archeologist and intellectual willing to use that contribution. History after all exist as a study to learn from the past more than learn the past as simple information.

A good book to read is the Spartan Army by John Lazenby , his conclusions are far different to the traditional view of Sparta , in other words Sparta had more than 3000 Hoplites to control an empire , the other note is 700 perekoi hoplites also fought at Thermopylae, get his book it is a very worthwhile
Does it overly glorify the Spartans like most Greek philosophers did? King leonidas didnt even want to stay at thermoplyae, the spartans had good hoplites, but they werent anything like how movies portray them.

Rallying the men for war is not synonomous with having an utter disregard for the ultimate waste of human life that war provides. He and the men knew that they had to fight, regardless of whether it was " a pity " or not, so without any other options you'd better double down on your passion for war or else you'll have a race of men busy contemplating "the pity of war" rather than hardening their hearts and fighting until the last man.

Interestingly, the Spartans in "300" were portrayed by Hollywood with full beards borrowed from the Assyrian/Persian ideal 38:35. Whereas in reality the Hellenic ideal for a man was to be clean shaven. 37:55

I think Sparta worshipped the same Greek gods as Athens etc. My hunch (without actual knowledge on the topic) is they were probably fairly impartial about death.
@@JaneFrizzell It is just that it dawned on me while watching the series that other cultures offered an eternal personal, tangible benefit to their warriors; that perhaps I had missed something in the Spartan twist on religion - that perhaps it differed in some motivating way.
But it sounds as if the main personal gain is ceasing to exist - similar to Eastern Religions. Perhaps their lives were so difficult that non-existence sounded good?
In comparison, the Christian God combines the personal aspect of the ancient Greek gods, with an omnipresent aspect, like the Eastern concept.
He is personal like a father: he made us and wants relationship with us. He took responsibility for our errors like a father does a child's broken window, by coming to earth once to pay for those as Jesus.
But being beyond, he has the power to grant eternal life to those who accept his way.
Changes in music to signal in battle were carried well into the 19th century CE. You can look up the exact bugle calls to signal advance, gather, hold or retreat. (coincidentally the 19th century is also when due to advances in killing machines battle formations for infantry were phased out)
While not used in battle anymore the bugle is still used to signal certain daily activities in the US military. (I cannot speak for other countries but I imagine several of them still hold similar traditions as well)
