    I absolutely love my FJ Beast! I hunt deer in the mountains of northern Pa in December. I have to drive six miles off of the paved road just to get to the lane to the cabin. The lane is 1 mile long, crosses a creek, goes up a steep grade to the halfway point where I have to make a 90° turn to go up another steep grade to finally arrive at the cabin. Once there, I usually have to go back down to pick up my hunting buddies whose 4wd trucks and Jeeps can't make it up the hill. One of the guys has a Jeep that he put about $4,000.00. worth of off-road upgrades on. I make him say, "Pretty please" before I'll go get him and his gear. LOVE MY FJ BEAST!

    Tires tires tires kids. There are comments here about chains and tire pressure and lifts and other 4x4's getting stuck. Here is the real deal. Winter tires compared to all season tires of any make or model will always be better in snow/slush/ice. The short explanation...the rubber on all season tires becomes hard due to the cold at around 5 celsius and as the temperature drops that increased 'hardness' has a very negative effect on traction. So if you ride on all seasons in the snow letting the air out will give you a little bit more traction, not much mind you and will affect driving stability and speed. Chains are great, but a pain to install and severely limit tire spin when stuck (as they will fly off and decapitate the neighbor's annoying dog) and will of course affect driving speed.
    The winter tire is made to stay malleable at low temperature (-40c) and will provide above average traction in wet and dry winter driving conditions. No speed limit or tire spin restrictions and if you decide to purchase studded tires...well your king then. The negative side...they wear much faster than all season tires in warm(er) winter conditions.
    '09 FJ Cruiser with GoodYear winterforce tires....studded of course.

    Guess that answers my question about my new to me FJ Cruiser snow handling. My Tacoma I traded in which was a base model would've done that but not as smooth. Problem is here in Iowa the wind blows and packs the snow, I've actually gotten stuck like the Jeep in a 4x4 Dodge half ton and had to dig because it's lifting the frame enough the tires can't dig in the middle of a rural highway. That thing was normally good in the winter and the only time ever stuck.

    Stock 2005 Durango limited, with all terrain tires. I had to stop in the middle of a hill because a Philly city bus was stuck. A lady gets off the bus and walks directly in front of my truck so I came to a dead stop. Huge 4 lane highway behind me, 2.5 ft of snow and it was still coming down. Locked the diff, had it in 4 lo - put my foot down and it took off like a goat. Toyota reliability is unsurpassed but my Durango is a beast, for real. It's heavy with terrible gas mileage but it's unstoppable in real bad weather. Also- I was in DC for the blizzard. It wasn't bad at all. We had a white out in Delaware and cars were in ditches as far as the eye could see. Good times. Lol

  • @ajs622
    @ajs622 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A huge thing that the fj has going for it over pretty much every other stock 4x4 is the rear locker. With that engaged you have a solid 3 wheel drive since the front differential is still open. When you have a regular 4x4 with front and rear open differentials you really only have 2 wheel drive because only one front wheel and one rear wheel is getting power the other wheels just sit there. The locker on the fj locks the rear together so both wheels get even power and turn at the same speed and the one front wheel is getting power when 4 wheel is on that's a big advantage. Along with good tires its pretty much unstoppable. You could add a front locker as well but with the independent front suspension that puts a lot of strain on the CV joints when turning.

    • @gabe9414
      @gabe9414 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anthony Stauffacher the Jeep Wrangler rubicon has front and rear lockers. The Jeep would probably make it through conditions like this if it had a better driver and chains.

    • @ajs622
      @ajs622 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gabe I agree with that. Driver does make a big difference. I don't know how many people I've seen trying to drive through deep snow being real heavy on the gas and getting themselves stuck. Not breaking traction is the real key. Having lockers can really help in not loosing grip. I've driven through over 20" of snow with my Tahoe that has open front and rear diff's without chains and not gotten stuck. You just can't break traction. And if you do don't sit there spinning, ease into the gas and if you have to back up and get another run at it do it. In deep snow like that there aren't many people around on the unplowed roads.

    I’ve seen great jeep drivers in person get through some crazy snow in one piece here in the Midwest. I think it’s skill and vehicle capability just running stock won’t always do it depending on the options you have. Tires in my opinion are a big thing for everyday everything

    you know...that was me too, in my 2014 4runner during the Blizzard of 2016. I live in Ft Washington, a suburb of Wash DC, and i made it out of my unplowed (yet) neighborhood, and was riding around just seeing what i could and could not do. And all i saw was stuck plows, stuck people in cars, and stuck 'others'...and my 4runner just Beast'd right on through.
    Not picking on Jeeps, because i did see them out and about. Im just saying, Toyos can do alot.
    kool vid...

    Didn't need chains, just get a decent set of tires. Those tires were all season radials. But, yes, the FJ will go anywhere. I live in New Hampshire, and have given it the real test. I got stuck once for a minute or two until I locked the differential, and put it in crawl mode. It walked right off the ice I had it stuck on.

    The only reason he can roll is because he has tire chains. The Jeep could have done the same thing if the owner had chains.
