  • Around 2:30AM on June 28th, the fields, grain silos, and small towns along the Indiana Northeastern Railroad echoed with one of our favorite songs as Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive no. 765 arrived. We're looking forward to sharing it all summer long: indianarailexperience.org

      @@HolyTrinity458 being near suburbs or in urban areas doesn't necessarily dictate the limit. Firstly there are level crossing limits. Then you stack on the fact that this is literally in the middle of a neighborhood, wherein cars have a limit of 30mph. So, obviously a locomotive which has way more mass than a car is going to be moving just as slow if not slower.

    • @HolyTrinity458
      @HolyTrinity458 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@professormetal4411To explain how I know what I know, I’m a locomotive engineer for a commuter rail. We operate our trains near densely populated neighborhoods with level/grade crossings at 79mph. Keep in mind we are well over a million pounds in weight with no passengers. Level/grade crossings do not have speed restrictions.
      Per 49 CFR § 213 track speeds are determined by Quality/Classification of rail, Curve angle and grade/level, and a couple of other miscellaneous things. There is nothing outlined in 49 CFR 213 that forces a train to move slower based on the road speed at which cars travel or the placement. Only the classification of the rail.
      The rule for level/grade crossings with restrictions is outlined in 49 CFR 213.347, which states that rails class 8 and up can not cross a grade crossing. Aka, trains operating above 110mph may not pass a grade crossing.*** This means that the absolute maximum speed a train is allowed to pass through a level/grade crossing is 110mph. Given the classification of rail allows 110mph travel and does not have curved rail.

    This is kinda creepy and beautiful at the same time.
    Imagine standing there in the dead of night.
    Suddenly you hear a whistle far away that is closing in.
    just when you hear the train must be close by, the barriers go down and the lights start flashing.
    You're eagerly waiting for the train to pass with a little discomfort because there are never any trains running at this time, but after a little while there's still no train to be seen.
    After a couple of minutes the barriers go up and the lights stop flashing. The train never passed, but you start hearing the whistle again.
    at first very loud as if the train just went by and is just around the corner, and as time goes on, the whistle gets further and further away until it has vanished in the distance.

    • @dickJohnsonpeter
      @dickJohnsonpeter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes! And the whistle stops and as the gates come down the engine suddenly comes out of nowhere with its 80 foot long cow catcher leading the way and she blows her whistle loud and does a back flip. The wheels all switch places and the steam billows like a cosmic kite as the Fat Controller waves from the fo'c'stle. It was awesome enough to see that in the video but in real life it would have really been something.

    Awesome video. That lonesome sound causes many chill bumps. Hearing the N&W 611J whistle has the same effect ❤❤❤❤

    I was waiting for it to come roaring by like a bat outta hell at 75 or 80 but to see it just cruise by at like 10 is just funny to me

    Scrolling through TH-cam on my phone and seeing the thumbnail made it look like a ghost train... always an awesome sound to hear and an awesome sight to see

    Based on the blurred thumbnail and haunting screams of the whistle I expected this thing to go flying by at 70+ mph. Wasn't expecting a train rolling so slow you could see the conductor just chill'n hahaha. Great video. No idea why the whistle filled me with such a sense of anxiety 🤣

    I watch this and remember the stories my Dad would tell me about traveling by rail all over CONUS when he was in the Army from 1944 to after 1950. He would say; "Listening to that gets me all-goose-bumpy again."

    I love the sound of trains. It’s one of my top favorite sounds.
    Second is a foghorn.
    Third is bell chimes especially from Big Ben or the grandfather clock.
    Those gates sounding like that made me wanna dance. Seriously I was Vibing to the bells rhythm.
