Came here straight from the tensegrity chair, adding you to a long list of cool indie build channels on TH-cam, love your style and humor! Keep doing what you’re doing man :).
Hey! If you need help with getting started woodworking, I can offer some tips! You can send me a message on here, or email me at redboot39@gmail.com. Last year, I made a handle very similar to this one, and ran into similar problems that he did. Hope you take up woodworking during the pandemic! And check out Beau Miles latest videos, he has a lot of good ideas about where to get wood
not for one second will i think this is a fail, not even after the handle breaks. you did a great job and that happy little accident is an opportunity for a wonderful new handle. the work you put into this, the video, that shot at 10:51, the way your sense of humor sneaks in every now and then, amazing. this was posted on the 18th and now you have 10k subscribblers, how cool is that! still underrated channel but i can see it getting a lot of attention in the future.
I watched 16+ mins of a carpenter making a failed axe handle and be happy to watch another pt2 of him making another handle that corrected his miscalculation. Congrats on your subs. I know you're surpassed that milestone but cheers for the next 5000.
Would strongly recommend using a steamer to soften the wood and use hickory. Iron wood is far too unyealding and will always crack. You need a wood that will "give" a little. Ash is good too (needs to be aged though). Beautiful restoration of the axe head ㊗️😉
I think the fail was actually an opportunity to teach us newbies to look out for things like that. I wonder what the etching on the blade translates to in English?
Thank you for showing the world so much, I appreciate the quick frames of the product or your technique. Your drawings make you seam like an industrial designer. Your honesty also helped teach us. So thanks be safe much success to you and your channel
I can't believe how gorgeous this turned out, well actually I can believe it you are just that talented! You have some really great videos, I've already sent one to my son in the hopes that he will make it for me, lol
Made a few handles with that same wood with the same results. Density and hardness makes it prone to cracking as it lacks elasticity. That’s why most handles are made out of lighter and elastic wood like hickory or white ash
Found you via TH-cam randomly recommending your floating chair and that one video got me hooked. You have an amazing channel here and I can see myself coming return many times in the future.
Dude I am SO sorry about your axe! I know it's been 5 months, but I would still be upset about it. I've made my own in the past and run into similar problems, but with knots. Thank you for sharing your mistakes during your videos. It shows you're human! Keep at it, my guy. If I could, I'd be making videos just like this one
I subscribed after seeing your video for just minute....this is called worth seeing anything... wish i could also do same thing.... helpful if you could make tutoring video...
I’ve been watching all of your videos after the chair was recommended to me, I just wanted to say that I love the channel so far and I hope someday that you will get many subscribers :)
Hey man, I love your videos and my favorite ones have relaxing music. If you could put more of that in your videos I’m sure I would watch every one of them!
Remember these accidents, videos, and viewers when you're getting millions of subscribers. Keep doing the good work, and i also believe that accident was just an opportunity too. I believe that you'll be a really famous youtuber
I am new subscriber and very impressed with your channel. Congratulations on the 5,000 may you have many more. You honor the men that made and used that hatchet so long ago . I believe it is Japanese and the manufacturers name could easily be found for some interesting history. Keep up the good work and have continued success.
Wow, I love your videos! Watched your laptop stand video and got thinking: Have you considered making an adjustable height standing desk? Would be a really cool project, potentially very hard or easy, depending on how complex you go. Could have a pulley system (with a motor), or maybe some system you come up with. Very relevant now that so many are working from home too!
Idk man I tried restoring an old ax I found in the woods in high school and yours turned out way nicer than mine ! Bummer about the handle but still amazing work
Is that tiny wedge really the only part of the wedge in the handle? Or did some of that fall off or something haha. Never seen a axe wedge the size of a eraser
We all learn from our mistakes, but you are on the right trail, she sure looked nice, try boiled linseed oil, you well have ax with a beautiful feel to it. I use it on all my handles, what nice it's cheap to use it and easy to maintain the handle, try it you will never use poly again.
It's Japanese, could be contemporary. Unless you like wall hangers, I suggest sticking with a straight handle of ash, oak or hickory. I like tools that work.
It's a Japanese carpenters axe, hence the Japanese engraving. He did a good job cleaning up the axe head, but the recurve is a bit dramatic for practical use. The head is set and aligned well but ironwood was a fairly poor choice, it's very pretty but also very dense and heavy and doesn't have the same shock absorbing properties of more common axe handles like ash or hickory or oak. It's a decent job for a beginner project
Nice job thats a sweet axe edit: bummer dude looks like the grain was twisted just a bit hickory is a great choice for a axe just wont look as good take care

Good video. Especially the ending where the failure mode is explained. One learns the most efficiently by his mistakes. Next time we are wiser!

I really enjoy watching your videos. They are pretty satisfying and relaxing.
A band saw could be used to make cutting the shape of the handle easier :]
One day I will own one :]
I would give my eye teeth for a Japanese bearded hatchet. Well done.

Yeah I have a few ideas! I like the pulley system idea, if I have enough counterweights you could make it so it lifts up with the touch of a finger

The Kratos axe was what I modeled it after
Wish my splitting axe came clean with just a brush. Had to use eight pieces of sand paper and a DA just to get the surface rust off
