Old German "Helko Werk" Axe Restoration with Laminated Palm Swell Handle

- In this video I restored a German axe from "Helko Werk". I already restored an axe a year ago and I wasn't going to make another video about restoring another axe but the incredible work of a friend inspired me to create a handle for this axe very, very special.
So I started the restoration by disassembling the old handle. after inspecting the ax's head I decided to sandblasting it and electrolysis to remove any traces of rust. Restoration continued by repairing the hammered poll, made a new bevel and after that I applied a layer of bluing solution, for anti rusting. After cold bluing process, I removed from blackening with a steel wool and the head axe was completely restored.
The old handle was too damaged to be restored. I took a piece of Black Locust wood and I cutting it until I reached the desired shapes. As I said, I was inspired to make a custom handle and that's only because you voted on TH-cam community to make a custom handle. So, I took a piece of Oak wood and I laminated the palm swell. The results of this axe restoration impressed me and I hope you have the same opinion.
Let's not talk anymore and let the video amaze you.
I hope you like this restoration and if you have questions about part of the restoration process, I am at your disposal with answers to any questions.
Cheers and have a nice weekend !

Very well done. I appreciate the camera quality and audio. At no point was there obnoxious music or exceedingly loud feedback from the tools. I really like the fact you didn't use any excessive material. Everything seemed to be calculated to use the perfect amount of consumables while maintaining a clean shop. I didnt realize how much I enjoyed that until I noticed it. Most importantly, you didn't artificially corrode something and try to pass it off as "ancient". I like your delivery and style.
Glad to read this kind words 😍 many thanks

I love how you kept the integrity of the old tool.... not glamming it up with etches or designs. A true restoration. Excellent!
Thank you very much Kathy 😊
Watching Cool Again is always a perfect way to start the day :-)
Glad to hear that my friend 🤗 cheers and have a nice weekend 👍🏼🍻
Watching LADB is a perfect way to start the day also! :D

That's a great slogan😁
No music = 👍 No commentary = 👍 No extraneous noises = 👍 Sounds of the (hand) tools = 👍 Nice work! 👍
Glad to hear that Kris 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Don't forget that smack that he made lol
exactly the way it had to be,, often videos got music ruining it all
@@jeghedderhenrik Music in these types of videos and unnecessary narration are not cool, IMHO, so I avoid them and watch only those without.

THAT was one of the finest examples of hand filing I have EVER seen (and I'm a 58 year old man who's done a lot of it). Your ability to turn inanimate objects into works of art is amazing! This was an absolute pleasure to watch, bravo to you brother! Thank you very much for sharing your videos with us. God bless you and your family. Rev. D.
Thanks a lot for your kind words 😎 I really appreciate you
@@CoolAgainRestoration Likewise my friend. :)
least encouraging and wholesome conversation between two restoration enthusiasts
It’s not just your workmanship I am jealous of, it’s the amount of equipment you have at your disposal too! Another great video 👍🏻
Thank you very much Simon 😇 really appreciate
Axes are my favorite weapon; I just like the aesthitic. I really liked the addition of the oak pieces on the end of the handle to give it a bit of color on the handle. Overall a great restoration.
Thanks and glad you liked it Ricky 🤗
I've said it before and I'll say it again. These are the BEST restoration videos on youtube. Everything is perfect. From timestamping the videos to putting explanations of what you're doing, filming enough to be interesting but not too much so it's boring. Your videos are relaxing, organized, easy to follow and have everything I want in a restoration video. Other channels, although good, just don't do it as well as this one.
Thanks for these kind words Emma 🙏 I really appreciate
This.
I've watched hundreds of these axe restorations on TH-cam and this might be the best yet. Thanks 👍
Oh,glad to hear that Christopher 😊many thanks
@@CoolAgainRestoration Thanks for the hours of entertainment. All the best ✌️
Christopher Malloy this IS the best are restoration. I've watched hundreds of them and between Cool Again and Tysy they are true MASTERS at their craft.
axe* Spell check took over.
Glad to hear that 🤗🤗
beautiful idea mate..... really I want to be like you
Thanks mate
I'm an amateur blacksmith, and this gave me ideas for my handle construction. Beautifully restored
Thanks a lot buddy 👍🏻 good luck with your projects
You're the first TH-camr I've ever seen doing it right: restoring the edge with a file not an angle grinder or any other electric tool.
Thanks a lot 👍
@@CoolAgainRestoration no problem. I just hope it inspires other people to do it the same way. I've seen too many axes and other tools being destroyed by morons with power tools who don't know nothing about frictional heating and heat treatment of steel.
@robusthedgehog yeah , you have right . But also with power tools can be done right if you keep an eye on the metal ( exactly what you talked about , friction and metal tempering ) 👍 glad to have educated people here , cheers mate
I hope you like the video and... axe me a question :)
You have a good sense of humour 👍👍
Thanks Barbara 😀
😁 like your humor 👍 , and work 😉
All hail the dad jokes!
Can you put subtitles in Spanish please. (◍ • ᴗ • ◍) ❤
I like a lot the laminated palm swell. Never seen anywhere else ❤️❤️❤️
I can't get over how beautiful the handle turned out. All in all, A very impressive and respectful restoration of a piece of history.
Thanks and glad you liked it Alorota 😊
Hey finally found the time to watch it. Such a nice project. Very well done and the video was so calming. Thank you for that!
Thanks man 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🍻
The result is perfect, buddy! Thanks
Thanks my friend 🍻
Awesome technique for shaping the blade with the file! I never knew it could be done that way but it seems so simple now that I think about it.
Glad you liked and that’s why I make the video easy to understand 😇
Gotta say, I have never seen the towel folding trick to re-establish the edge. Such a simple technique, yet such a proper outcome!
Thanks 😊
From an old carpenter I much admire your work. Oh forgot to say yes I like the palm swell idea.
Glad you liked it, many thanks 😊
Mate I need to say that I just discovered your channel by chance.. (thank God for the incredible Zippo video).
Since everyone is talking about the handle and some other aspects.. I will take a minute to tell you how incredible is for me that you can remove material and polish the metal to such a degree that it literally shines like a mirror. For me, that was the best part..anyway, your work is outstanding, please NEVER STOP making videos like this ❤️
Thank you very much mate 😊I really appreciate
Nice this is just the thing to watch after feeling sick during the night a nice restoration
Glad you liked it 🤗
That is a great axe now well cared for. Thanks😊😊😊
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed 😊
That’s the way an axe needs to be restored. Thank you👍
Thanks Mike and glad you liked it so much 👍
Great job friend 👍.
Thanks buddy
That handle looks amazing! That was a great idea laminating the palm swell, you nailed it. Also I really liked the towel trick for putting a bevel on the axe, I liked the whole video, awesome restoration.
Thank you very much Randy and glad you liked so much 🤗🤗 much appreciate
Randy, are you saying he nailed it by glueing it? Lol
Wow! A lot of axe restos but this is the best.
Thanks and glad you enjoyed 😊
This is like my mechanic without powertools and i mean that in the most positive way. This video was great!
Thank you very much and glad you liked it so much 😊
Another, yes another awesome restoration. If I lived anywhere close to you I’d be the friend that hung out in your workshop and wouldn’t leave…but I’d bring beer. Love watching you work…if you ever come over here, I demand you visit me. Awesome restoration…awesome!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you very much for these kind words my friend . I really appreciate you 🤗 have a nice weekend
@@CoolAgainRestoration I appreciate you sharing your workshop with us! I have a question…is Odies a local product or do they sell it everywhere? I want to try it. And what brand draw knife is that? I can’t find a new one that’s any good. I have two that I use and they are both eighty+ years old.
Mine is old too. Has no company marks on,maybe is handmade,I don’t know. And the odie oil is very good, maybe the number one in business. But is too expensive. They ship everywhere but is expensive the shipping too. If you are from USA maybe is a way cheaper but to me was expensive because I paid the price for oil,the shipping from USA to Europe and the tax too
I don't understand how you can do it better and better from one video to another? So beautiful 👌 Can't wait to see your next project💯
Thanks mate 👍🏻
Amazing result!👏🏻
Thanks a lot 😊
This is the best axe restoration video I've ever seen. Thanks for keeping it real, no mirror-polish, Viking runes, charred handle nonsense.
Your result it authentic yet gorgeous axe.
Thank you very much Pavel 🤗 glad you liked it
Отличная работа, приятно посмотреть.
Very nicely done 👍 really love that hand crafted handle, looks sweet. Amazing job
Glad you liked it 😎🤗
Beautifully filmed. Precise restoration of this axe. This was the first time I saw this specific sharpening. Thickening the tip of the handle by gluing oak boards will prevent the ax from slipping during chopping. Good idea.
Congratulations and best regards 😀.
Thank you very much and glad you enjoyed 😊
Thank you for the like 😀.
You are welcome 😉
"I dont have a template, so i copy one" mate ur just pure talent and hardwork. Keep it up. This is absolute therapy for me.

What a cool technique with hand filing the bevel, never seen it
Thanks and glad you liked it 😊
I dont know why Im interested on restoration videos.keep it up bro
Using a wood chisel to remove a steel wedge???? If my father had caught me doing that to one of his wood chisels, I wouldnt have been able to sit down for a week.
he didn't remove it... he made some space for it to come out... he hit the wood not the wedge itself
Finally some restorator who doesn't do mirror polishing every metal he found!
Dark, matte rough finish almost always gives a better apperance to axes
I agree with you and glad you liked it 🤗
Прекрасная работа! Знатный топорик. Такой не грех и при гостях достать. 👍🏼
I have a Helko Werk Forestry axe and also a small hatchet. They make amazing products. A lot of people swear by the Swedish made axes, which are very good. But as you pointed out they’ve been making axes since 1844. Thank you for restoring this piece. It is stunning.
Thank you very much Greg 😊

My fingers started tingling at the sensation of a splinter- that scene PAINED my very soul
And this is the most beautiful handle ever!!!
Beautiful work
Thank you very much! 😊
Watching you remove that wedge with your lovely wood chisel made me a little bit anxious! But I'm relaxed seeing no harm came to the chisel 🤣
A lesser mortal might have taken an angle grinder to that axe head - total respect to you for taking the craftsman's approach and using the file instead.
And yes. I love the laminated hand swell with contrasting wood. Most beautiful!
Thank you very much mate ! That chisel is only for that kind of jobs 😅 because it was cheap and I think is not hardened enough . After a single use in wood , the edge of the blade became dull quickly, so I took the decision to use it only in these dirty jobs 😅
Great video. I like your use of old hand tools. Thanks
Thanks again Chuck 😊
Finally someone who doesnt ruin the patina! Love it. 100% satisfaction.
Thank you very much man 😊
Thanks for that bevel-making trick, I am going to use that to fix up my splitting maul!
Thanks a lot and good luck with that 👍
watching things get restored is very relaxing.
Yes,I like too 😎
That trick with the file and towel, is cool. Thanx for the tip.
Glad you liked it Mitchel 🤗
Not only did you restore it, it is perfectly usable for decades to come.
Thanks and glad you enjoyed
I like the laminated palm swell! Excellent work you do.
Thank you very much and glad you liked it so much 😊
Nicely done. Restoration has a feels. I felt this one. Don't know why but it just spoke to me.
Glad to hear that and thanks a lot 😊
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.
Thanks Rob 😊
This is a fabulous restoration. Very impressive both for the axe head and especially the handle with that amazing lamination to achieve the palm swell
Very great job everyone should support you
Thanks 😊
Very well done and thank you for preserving the makers-mark and overall antiquity.
Glad you liked it 😊
Я, ВОСХИЩЕН!!! Настоящий мастер😮😂❤😮😮!!!
You can't beat a lovingly restored, antique axe. So much better than modern ones. 👍
Very true 👌
Love watching handles. Don't know why but handle making makes me happy
Me too 😇
That was the most professional handle build I've ever seen
Thanks a lot mate 😊
Great job. It's nice to watch someone who knows what they are doing.
Thanks a lot again , Gary 😊 cheers
I really appreciate watching a true craftsman. Great work!
Thanks a lot Keith 😊glad you liked it
Great work, pleasure to watch the whole restoration process.
Thank you very much and glad you liked it 😊
Nice axe. Needs a longer handle than the original in my opinion.
Good attention to detail bluing the inside of the eye.
Great job on the poll.
I also liked how you soaked it in oil overnight.
Excellent choice of wood for the handle.
Good job.
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoy 😊 cheers
Remarkable Axe Restoration !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That towel trick was amazing. So simple and effective. Great job.
Yes,is very easy to do and can’t go wrong with 👍🏻🤗

Thanks a lot dude 👍🏻😎

I would pay some genuine serious money for that axe, absolutely astounding. Phenomenal woodwork and amazing head.

I got a new Helko Werk not too long ago. A thing of beauty.
Going to get to use it soon, got some trees that need to go down.

This reminds me of watching my father & grandfather make handles. Awesome job. 🤙🤙
Glad I bring you back memories with my videos 😇 thanks David
Excellent restoration. Superior presentation quality. Repair of the mushrooming of the hammers head was done with a hand file. Very old school.. Thank you 😊 for not wasting my time.
Glad to hear that and glad you liked it 😊 many thanks
Wow the part with the towel to fix the edge was super smart! Great job.
