The axe has a bevel on one side for hewing wood you’re working on rather than chopping into it - the “bent handle” is to keep the user’s knuckles safe while doing so 👍🏻
Excellent restoration, great content, keep it up man!

I watched a few of your woodworking videos today. Thank you very much for brightening up my Sunday. I’d like to make a small suggestion. I really love watching them. But I felt that not enough time was spent showing the final product. It’s really nice to spend a little bit of time looking at the final result. Sometimes the final shot is so short that I feel I don’t even have time to breathe out and fully appreciate your mastery. Apart from that … brilliant. Keep up the magnificent work.

Nice to see this old side axe brought back to life. Enjoyed the video, good idea with the gun blue. Entertained by the steam bending section 🤔 . A norm for tool handles was to keep an eye open for the right shaped branch, cut it green, do the initial de-barking and shaping but leave it oversize to allow for shrinkage, (air ) dry it out slowly over the winter and do the final fit after 6 - 9 months has elapsed. As an apprentice my 80 year old Master Craftsman taught me to look for handles in the hedge or woods before you need them and even wait several seasons until they grew to the right size. I've re-handled multiple Devon shovels over years doing exactly this. Nice job on the wedging bravo 👏

The shape of the head suggest it's a broad ax for shaping wood. Those typically came in right and left handed versions, so the bent handle may be intentional and not due to warping. The handle design allowed people to work close to the wood and not scrape their knuckles on the logs.

as someone pointed out.. the bend was to provide clearance for your hand when hewing heavy timber faces to make the square.. there's tons of videos on how to do this, showing various techniques....
the handle of a broadaxe like this was typically bent AFTER it was mounted in the axe head itself. by clamping the axe head to some heavy timber, a block placed under the tail of the handle provided the leverage to bend.....tight the clamp down to bend the handle and then let it sit for a couple days....

It is flat on one side so you can get up close to your work also the handle is curved to keep your hand out of the way

Nice steaming setup! I saw something somewhere about using ammonia to make wood very pliable for reshaping (I think it was on Nighthawkinlight's channel). I wonder if that would have prevented the first attempt from cracking.

Also that sanding disk changer caddy is genius.

PS. I commented before learning that commenting was a requirement for your giveaway. I would be happy to win this axe, but I sincerely don't need it.

Oh I've seen that video! it was made by @Applied Science. Perhaps it would've softened the wood more, but it was probably the fact that it didn't get steamed long enough

Looks more like a froe than an axe ?? Have seen a tool very similar use to make cedar decretive shingles.

Awesome video. How does drilling a hole prevent the handle from cracking?

    • @A.Mere.Creator
      @A.Mere.Creator  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for the feedback :) I am not entirely sure, but I've seen others do it. It probably makes it harder for the split to form by giving more room for spreading of the fibers, and cutting the fibers that are most likely to cause the split

This ax is for making square props for houses. That's why it's bent on one side and straight on the other, and the handle was curved.

Why handle needs to be little curved?

    • @A.Mere.Creator

I just realized I never explained that in the video! It is so when you are flatting the one side of a log, your knuckles do not scrape constantly :)

I think it's flat on one side from sharpening or perhaps it was designed that way for easier sharpening. I love your craft btw

It's flat on one side because it's a hewing axe. Used to cut planks or boards from logs.

It's a type of adze. Often used in boat building. The handle was likely bent on purpose.

I kept getting an ad for a drillbit to split fire wood. "Stop using your old axe".
I don't think google understands the audience for this video.
