- A revisit to Sanderstead to follow a Bourne Society walk put together by Joy Gadsby in 1997. Much remains but some pointers on the trail are no longer there. It meshes very well with my 2021 film and I hope you enjoy it!

The pond was an eyesore in the late 1950's.
I would ride my bike around the dirt track that was the edge path.
A walk around Sanderstead - and why not? Home to one of the most popular cricket video channels on TH-cam. Who would have thought it.
Thanks for this great video Phil. You have really brought me home this time as I grew up in Sanderstead. Spent hours at the old rec playing football and cricket, went to Gresham and Riddlesdown. Your memory of the Gruffy is spot on, used to be very bumpy over there with well worn paths we would ride our bikes on. That whole area really hasn't changed much in 40 years.
Glad you enjoyed it, Dave!
It's great to see a place in detail that I am so familiar with and yet knew little about until now...
Our local history is so rich, John - there are many more stories to tell!
As usual a very interesting walk lots of information. Reminds me when I was a teenager always out walking not like kids today on their computers 😊
You and me both! It was great being outdoors as a youngster
In the 80s year 6 children from the Atwood School used to "Womble" the village pond removing all kinds of rubbish even a shopping trolley !!! On the plus side they also discovered fresh water clams. I suppose health and safety have now stooped this !!!
Just somewhere I went through on the 403 to Croydon. Don't think I ever stopped to take a look, so this is a great video to watch.
I remember trips to the DIY store and never spotted the grain hoists.
Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it, Andy. I vaguely remember the hoist but like much of this stuff, now regret not taking it in more when I was younger.
I well remember the 2 Esso garages, the one that is now Majestic Wine repaired the engine of my 72 Humber Sceptre when one of the big ends went. Afterwards it kept blowing head gaskets so I got rid of it. That was around 1980/81 😅
I’m glad I remembered it, time plays tricks sometimes!
I worked at the Esso station at Mitchley Hill & Limpsfield Road, late 1976 to early 1977. Both that one and the Esso station where the Majestic wine warehouse had the same owners as the same people managed both places.
The Wine Warehouse building brought back an old memory: one night in the spring of 1973 I was walking home to Orchard Road with a pal at 3am, and we were tripping out of our skulls. We stopped at the garage there to gaze at a large window on the front left of the building that was a beautiful blue color. And then a cop car drove by, saw us, and stopped us to ask what the hell we were were doing. Somehow we managed to talk our way out of the situation, and were able to continue our psychedelic adventure in the safety and comfort of my house.
Another excellent walk and talk. I've noticed you make the occasional reference to mobile phone masts, Sanderstead is very good at hiding them, Vodafone have antennas hidden in the steeple of All saints church behind the slats on all four sides and EE use the sign at the Shell petrol station next to Waitrose to hide theirs, probably due to planning constraints.
I didn’t know that, but what a great way to hide them. It was just a throwaway comment because the one near the junction of Mitchley Hill and Rectory Park is quite noticeable but I’m pleased other options are being used 😊
Hi Phil, great video been a resident of sanderstead since 1972 and amazed to learn new things from your video. As for the manhole covers on the field overlooking Mitchley hill I`m led to believe that this was for a water system for proposed housing which was shelved due to the outbreak of war and lack of money afterwards and then the area was designated green belt ( obviously dont take that as gospel as I`m sure someone will have a better insight of this )
Thanks Andy, that would make perfect sense so we will see if anyone else can add further detail or possible challenge to it!
Another awesome nostalgic video. Played poker on friday nights with some good buddies in a house at the end of the long driveway seen at 21:36 on limpsfield rd across from the chippy and the curry house. The guy who had the house, now passed on, was the lumberjack foreman for Croydon Council. He had a job for eons chopping down all the dutch elms in croydon and torching them. Great guy. Crazy, but great. Thanks for the heartwarming memories. Dave in Seattle.
That will be the Barrowsfield houses,Dave? Glad it triggered some memories for you. Planning for redevelopment there has been ongoing for a while. It’s a prominent location so will rightly get scrutinised and challenged I think.
