      Some in game cutscenes also change a little depending on what you've done in the game and if you do new game+ you can probably experience new scenes or watch the scenes again in the cutscene book in the inn rooms.

    I love the slow paced, take it at your own paceness of FF14. I started playing WoW Classic without any friends and I forgot how fun leveling was. I really like being able to log on, do a quest or two in STV and log out. I never really got a chance to before because I started at the very start of TBC and had to rush to 70 to play with friends. I never really got the chance to play it slow because that's not the culture of WoW, which is a shame.

    the class/job quests continued until shadowbringers, thats when they transitioned into role quests, so the original jobs have like 3 job related story lines, the ones from HW have like 2 full stories, and every job after simply has their initial job storyline. it was partially due to how much development time needed increased over time and they thought that at some point you are no longer a novice and being "instructed" by others is sort of moot. eventually you are the master of the job and these later skills are no longer taught to you but created by you out in the world out of necessity and creativity.

    Up-to-date note on FF14 class quests/stories, all current class quests are, to my knowledge finished stories by now, having been replaced in Shadowbringers and Endwalker by role quests! New classes do still get quest lines for themselves of course, up to the level cap of the expansion they were introduced in, but ending there while pre-shadowbringers added a chapter to every class quest storyline.

    They've actually retconned a bunch of times in FF14. BUT...they do it via a method called recontextualization. They don't throw out early lore. They introduce lore that changes the meaning of old lore. Making it entirely seamless and super easy to miss.

    I know I just started and this is over an hour long, but Asmon's exodus was the biggest, but not the first. The first true exodus was back in WoD with Zepla's group and several others fed up with WoD's gameplay. There had been a constant trickle due to how long Siege of Orgrimmar lasted, then WoD launch happened and the post-levelling content drought into Highmaul, then the ilvl fiasco of BRF was the straw that broke the camel's back for the first large exodus. While I was playing bnoth at the time, BRF was what caused WoW to fall behind both FFXIV and GW2 for me. I just logged for the facebook missions to make gold. BFA saw another large set of people coming over, but Asmon's wave was in the millions, which is crazy to think about.

    @brettrichards4048 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

    One thing I wanted to touch on with the ret con question which your chat seems to kind of glaze over and just say "no". Depending on your definition of retcon there are retcons in 14, but they do it in a way that that is either very minor or very subtle. Sometimes with very minor story beats they will just go back and change something. Sometimes its just a localization mistake or something else, but something that seems like it may be a big deal just gets left behind or "oh yea, sorry, that actually wasn't that big of a deal it just came across that way in this language translation, our bad".
    The more common form of "retcon" if you want to call it that the game does employ is establishing a character or event, and then down the line changing it slightly and developing the character more to change the context surrounding the event or adding more depth to it, but in a way that does kind of change what happened. This tends to happen mostly with story beats that happen in ARR and early HW which, still canonically happen, they don't change the canon itself. But they will heavily alter the context surrounding the event and provide a different perspective. They do so in a way that feels natural though to the point where some people wouldn't even really call it a retcon. I wouldn't necessarily disagree with them myself, but if you want to be very literal around it there would still be a change to a past event and how the game presented it happening. It is much more subtle though, and in my opinion works very well.

      sounds well executed! :D

    • @katomamundara8106
      @katomamundara8106 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      The common term for 'retcon' is 'retroactive continuity'. AKA rewriting a prior event. IE: Alphinaud didn't die afterall despite us seeing his headless corpse at the end of 2.0 (obviously this didn't happen, but giving an example). He was always alive, but simply didn't show up and his 'death' is never mentioned again. Retroactive continuity is looked down upon because it completely negates what we know happened because the writer is a complete hack. This is the common tool of the hack artists we call "Comic Book Writers".
      What XIV does and you describe is called retroactive contextualization. It takes a prior event, adds details/new info, without changing what happened at all. IE: The Alphinaud we think died is secretly the Ascian Bahablast. Because Ascians could reform to begin with (see: Nabriales) despite dying, him 'dying' is legitimately just a false flag!
      Retroactive Contextualization is not a 'Retcon' in the colloquial sense. The fact they share the same start's just a tool used by naysayers who just are looking for excuses to hate on something. The former's a tool of a bad writer. The latter's a tool of a good writer, as the original event's still there, just with a detail you didn't witness the first time. Of course, if it's a bit too contrived (IE: Alphinaud secretly used the Ninja Art Kawarimi from Naruto and his log showed up after we left his corpse) than it gets stupid.

I actually think you're completely correct tbh, I never heard the term "retroactive contextualization" but I'm stealing that for the future. I'm writing this as I'm in MSQ dungeon, so thoughts may be a bit spread out.
    I think one of the big reasons why WoW set BFA as the starting xpac and letting you chose what expansion you level afterwards is to make it so the player can hop into one of the (better) stories of previous expansions to get invested into the game, and get a feel for their characters without making them play through 20 years of story. As a ff player who plays WoW about a month or so out of every season, this is something I greatly appreciated. As it meant when I wanted to start playing Dragonflght I could just hop in, then while leveling alt classes I could go through other expansions and experience their stories without feeling like I had to rush through to get to end game.
    That was exactly my experience with ff14, however. I had friends I wanted to play with that were max level, and after 2 weeks of playing I was still in ARR so over the next few days I just skipped every cutscene and dialogue, as theres probably 60+ hours of dialogue alone per expansion, not mentioning (as a dps) queue times for story dungeons (that were roughly 10minutes each, if not more). I felt rushed, and it was daunting knowing I had to play through 3 different expansions and the base game just to play the content I wanted to with my friends.

    15:45 There are only two instances of retconning in XIV I can think of. The first is them retconning the Ascians' goals and intentions, which they finalized during the transition between ARR & HW. In 1.0, from what I know, the Ascians were just mysterious wizards who stole artifacts and had some unknown agenda that wasn't really too fleshed out. Yoshi P has said that they figured out what the overall goal of the Ascians was sometime during the patches of 2.0. The other instance is Endwalker, which sort of does some things to explain some older plot points from early on in the game that wouldn't make sense with newer context. They explain away some weird details in ARR (which would be spoilers to explain, so I won't say what they are), mainly because the plot up to EW hadn't been figured out yet, so they used it to tie up some of the early-game weirdness that didn't make sense later on. It's all done very well, though; none of it comes off as them going back on what was actually done in the story, but them framing things in a different light, so it's pretty great.

    Having all jobs on one character is the absolute best.
    I'm currently also playing guild wars 2 and I have 10 fully leveled fully specced out characters. And I don't give a single shit about any of them.
    Whereas in ff14 I care about all my jobs, because they've all been leveled through the same lens of my personal character, that I'm used to, the one I identify with because of the time spent and the story. So despite it looking like having all the jobs on one character would dilute the potency of jobs it's the opposite. Switching between 10 characters all the time is worse than playing 1 character and switching between 10 jobs.

      @@JustRuss oh you already CUT from the vod content? Holy shit bro lol. You need an editor! For TH-cam videos, I feel like chat engagement loses it's content value entirely unless it *becomes* the content. Cause I see your like, really good shit, and think "Yo, this dude ticks the boxes for raiders, RPG fans, and casuals - gigachad content". But if that good shit is spread too thin, it's hard to stay engaged on TH-cam, cause people's time is limited a lot.
      I missed this particular livestream part, and I'm part of the % of your audience who's looking for gameplay/raiding takes, and Jesse does cover that interestingly here, so I opened this up wanting to get:
      "Your take on Jesse's big WoW / FFXIV video, since your perspective comes from being a M+ WoW raider, and seeing how you generally would compare mechanics, gameplay, etc."
      I am not a hardcore raider even. I am current mostly, and complete new raids regularly, but I do not prog brand new, and I have not completed an ultimate. But I have played since 2013, so I am here for the "gameplay takes", and I would put BIG money that there are way more of those players in FFXIV and on twitch than.. well any other type.

    • @lyrithvalthier2236
      @lyrithvalthier2236 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And as you address in this video, and have seen for yourself, ARR is.. well. Let's just say it is not people's favorite content to consume, except the Trials, like Ifrit, and I think you have done Titan now, but even those are normal, so they are there to watch your reactions to the bosses themselves, the cinematic nature of them than the fights themselves for normal mode/MSQ clears.
      HUGE TIP - when you approach level 50, plan to schedule and then advertise on your TH-cam vids when you are going to be streaming the ARR showdown content. Preatorium. schedule it out, advertise, and get as many viewers on that stream as you can, and once you start it, try really really hard to not get toooo distracted by all the subs, the large view count, and chat HYPE. Oh I am glad for the ps limitations.... I play this on my potato laptop and barely squeezed out 15 fps by lowering the graphic settings with a tweak in system configuration (you can manually choose a graphic scaling for full screen mode, borderless windowed is therefore not an option for me even if it would make tabbing out of the game accidentally or intentionally less catastrophic)
    I am scared that I'll have to touch those settings again once the dawntrail upgrades roll around... since I also have to adjust my entire HUD when doing that because the scaling gets all wrong... plus since I already use 60% aka smallest size for the hotbars they might simply become to big to see anything if I lower my resolution even further.
    I am already considering buying a proper gaming pc but it ain't that easy... who knows maybe dawntrail will force me to decide.
    PS: for those that never had to deal with low spec hardware... 15fps is the minimum. 12 is already getting super janky and anything below 10 becomes a slideshow. I have experienced dropping to 7fps in an alliance once and I couldn't see shit.

    Second comment later in the video but in regards to toxicity: FF14 definitely does have toxicity. However, outright aggression is reportable and actually sees action taken quite often, so as a result, the type of toxicity you see tends to be more of the passive aggressive kind, or just outright silence with bad play behavior with an "oops lol" after or whatever. Additionally, the overprotectiveness of Sprouts leads to a toxic positivity being formed too. Now don't get me wrong, this isn't terrible most of the time. Asking people to be patient with mistakes for people still learning is fine, it happens, no worries. A wipe or two isn't going to get the vast majority of people worked up. However, sometimes this "don't worry, everyone makes mistakes!" goes so far as to extend to someone at max level whiffing a mechanic they learned at level 30 so badly that they wipe the entire raid/trial a dozen or more times.
    That is to say, at some point, players need to be held accountable for their poor gameplay. The later you are, the less acceptable it is to not be picking up on things quicker and quicker, but that only makes sense. If you've played from scratch, and are now in level 90 content, you've very likely got a hundred or more hours in the game by this point. Even if you haven't mastered a given fight, you should at least be capable of figuring out how to spot the tells by now. And I want to reiterate because I can't stress it enough. Mistakes happen, and most folk really don't care. It's no big deal. Take it from the top and go again if you wipe. Hakuna Matata. But when you have a healer/tank couple holding the party hostage because neither of them are willing to be held accountable for their own mistakes, and people keep defending them because "oh they're just learning", but you've wiped to the same extremely easy mechanic 6-7 times already... It gets frustrating. Toxic Positivity holds people hostage. I'll take it over being told to kms any day, though. Sorry random dudes in my first ever WoW dungeon where I had no idea what was going on. I lived.

    And me a fan of (combat)outlaw rogue and then they ducked the spec until it was worthless.
    In the end what they give to variety, ends turning into everyone using almost the same.
    In FF14 if you pick a job, it has its own identity, its own abilities (even if you can tell it is a similar version of the other, but...) the feel is different: there are things that you can do as a WAR and that you can't do as PLD.

      I used to apologize for watching every cutscene. Then I joined an alliance pug where people had a dance party for me when I left cutscene and showered me in confetti 🥺. Got told to stop apologizing by like 23 veterans who probably ran this content like 100 times.

      that's me lol. I'm starting to avoid WoW altogether now. During one of the ARR patch trials, I stood in what was apparently a tank mechanic (as a dps), wiped the group, apologized and admitted I was new, and guess what? no one yelled at me. no one tried to get me kicked. they just went, "Oh you're learning. It's all good!" and we killed it 2nd pull. so wholesome honestly. That NEVER would've happened in WoW.

    I hate when people are like "omg dude you're gonna cry so much omg this thing is so emotional omg omg omg"
    priming people's emotions like that often make it less likely to actually happen
    emotional scenes are a lot more impactful when you're not prepared for them

    as someone who just started getting into wow, i found it extremly boring i felt like i finished almost everything and had no reason to really play unless i just make alts , like ff has so much content that u can do wow has like nothing cause 15years of content is not even worth doing ... like all that there is to do is do keys at 70 really and for what? just to do more keys, in ff you have so many raids and stuff to get gear to move on to the next one wow its just like get 70 and bam

    don't be fooled by "no where near the complexity of WOW", when he mentions raiding (he hadn't raided yet in FF14.., and he likely ment "complex" as in, you need 3rd party tools and very specific builds for WOW raiding)
    ....
    HC raiding is complex on another level, especially the EW raids

    They could add all of the books into World of Warcraft. Users are paying enough and an e-reader is easy content. There could be a button for subscribers, they could be unlocked with achievements for doing lots of quests in each expansion that relates to the book. Ultimately I think because their lore has been such a mess they're afraid of what's written in the older books.

    The most important thing in FF`14 is prices in MTX shop. You want boost? £18 please ....not £50 like in wow... u dont want to do content? Cool just pay £18 and skip everything until recent expansion, £50 in wow is a fucking joke, especially when nearly nothing is account wide

    • @JustRuss

      @@JustRuss this is no way to throw shade, but a simple observation. Why not just try and create something unique rather than farm likes and views. Yes these videos take some degree of work, but why not actually create something unique to you?

    • @JustRuss
      @JustRuss  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rootzeroday Like I said, i think it's good to do both. At least that's what I try to do myself. More of my channel's content is my own created than reacting to others - but I think watching, reacting to and adding something to other videos can also be entertaining.
      You are right with your observation and the reason for it is because a lot of people (myself included) enjoy watching videos with an added perspective, to see if you agree with it or not. It's like watching a tv show with a friend.

    Even though WoW doesnt have console support, its graphics still look like a PS2 game

    • @JustRuss

      And it still runs terribly unless you have a really high end pc

  • @jude2214
    @jude2214 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Month late but:
    The graphics arent hamstrung by consoles, they intentionally made it so lower end pcs can play the game at a respectable performance. The ps5 version runs on par with a higher mid tier pc at high, holding a pretty consistent 60fps.
    They were hesitant to do a graphical update in part because of the risk of alienating people on lower end pcs

  • @BlakeAustin2011

    The biggest problem with WOW is they don’t have a cohesive story. Original WOW had self-contained stories in each zone that were all good, and they told a cohesive story overall. But once they grew too large, they never went back to redesign the gaming experience to be in order. Now you have to be level 60 just to experience the other storylines.
