I am old enough to be your grandfather, and I take my hat off to you. I have supported a number of young people who took their own paths, some with success, others not so much so. It would be naive for everyone to think they can follow in your footsteps. You obviously have an unusual talent for what you do and if not unique, it is quite unusual. Many young people try to teach themselves a trade and wind up making a mess of things or becoming a hack.
This young man is a helluva technician with an incredible attention to details. I was not expecting to hear that he was self-taught with NO formal training whatsoever. Huge props man! Love the channel, just wish you showed more of the actual assembly processes.
Trial by fire is usually the one you want working on your anything, mechanical, electrical, household or anything else. I've seen more failure on test drive, came apart or straight fell out and issues that no one can seem to figure out or find caused from following "the book" "the instructions" or "the contract".
Most people that are self taught are normally the best people
Been my experience the self taught mechanics are the best ones.

i think its called layout die... it could be ground away to show hi-lo-spots..the part was totally coated with it, so its fair to say they were checking the part for size, runount, trueness, with witness marks it reveals
@@seekingtko3146 I believe it was grease to keep it from rusting, lay out die is a thin liquid that would dry.
@@Ihbinder14 I can confirm it is grease. I work for a CAT dealer and we get parts in like that all the time. You can't NOT get it on you no matter what you do...unless you make the intern take it to the parts washer. ;)

As a long time industrial equipment mechanic, I appreciate the attention detail you put into your rebuilds. I Have not seen many who mark their bolts as the go through each step of the build. If I ever needed a big Cat engine built I would absolutely look into having you do one for me.

I worked at Caterpillar. Started in the shop. Moved through various positions and spent 16 years in the Engine Division. Worked on the 3208/3406 rod lines. Made the first 3406 rods for the tech center. Very high tolerances on them. Became a supervisor eventually. Worked closely with the assembly lines. Amazing engines.
One of the very few youtube channels that puts out videos that I watch start to finish as soon as you post them..aaand watch a couple more times later on. Keep it up man!
A highly motivated self starter who clearly knows a thing or two about D power, and is pretty damn funny as well.

SteedSpeed makes good shit. Had no clue they were doin stuff in the big boy world though far as commercial engines.

@@Rocketogre had one on my 3406e... spools a little faster and lowers the egt too....1 thick piece of machined steel, no warping, leaking or cracking.

I have watched so many of this man's videos I want to buy a cat and strip it down lol then try and rebuild it just from the service manual and this man's videos. I bet it's possible.

I usually watch some pretty low key tube stuff........my buddy and i can fix pretty much anything. Ive got two engineering degrees, and he dropped out of RISD. This has become my second favorite channel next to some guy that fixes outboard motors on boats down in Australia. Both brilliant mechanics/physicist type "kids". Both truly understand the machine they work on. Too bad we dont have any doctors like these guys these days.

I am always amazed how those CAT engines start nd run so smooth, I always expect them to have mad Vibrations on the ground without the engine mounts.

some people can go to school and not learn anything worth shit, some people can bypass and learn everything hands-on, props to you sir. I work with a lot of the former as a mechanical engineer and always appreciate the latter. Your vids are fantastic too, both for content and just the deadpan delivery.
I worked for the RR for 23 years with most of it behind the throttle and I liked it but it's not for everyone. You obviously like what you're doing and are a good mechanic so it was the right move for you. I enjoy watching your videos and look forward to more great content. Keep up the good work!

Just found your channel buddy, very impressive and enjoyable stuff. I also just left my railroad career two weeks ago but to work for CAT; something I’ve always loved being around and I’m proud to work in the heavy equipment world. I worked for not one but two railroads and I just had enough and decided it wasn’t worth the 40 years myself; I’m very thankful for my experience there and it taught me a lot but I am so excited for the new chapter ahead, doing something I’ve always genuinely enjoyed! Subscribed for sure, keep the inspiration coming! 🔧
There's a different low frequency sound that comes off of the Cats that sound fantastic. NOICE! Love it!
I hope you have better luck with IPD parts than I did. My experience with IPD is from 20+ years ago so hopefully they have improved. I’m retired now. Started my CAT engine career in the late seventies with the 1693 , 1676 , 3406A , 3408 ,3306 ,1100 series , 3208

I have always said the thing that separates the men from the boys is the ability to teach yourself.
The brass washer is a classy solution. Felt washers are cheap so I can see why a manufacturer would use them over thousands of liners, but your fix makes perfect sense from a machinist POV where brass is often used to protect parts.
I'm always amazed at your wealth of knowledge, especially because your self taught, very very impressive young man. Your parents must be very very proud of you. Keep up the great work. Many people, me included, find inspiration from you.....

The last 5 minutes had me belly laughing. I bailed on CSX after two years. I looked around at all the miserable pricks around me clinging to that pension for dear life and I was miserable myself. I made the right call. They culled the mechanical department down to nothing shortly after I left. You definitely made the right call obviously you found your calling

That one piece exhaust manifold looks cool. I bet it will look even cooler when its sitting out of the way so you can tap out the sheared off studs.

Those were some MIGHTY engines... those 3408’s were driveline shredders lol so much torque it’ll shred the driveshaft

Best advice ever. Im a self taught mechanic working for a dealer. Nothing beats actually getting dirty and figuring out the trades. the ones who went to school, ive found to be useless.
