    That's really nice powder, best I've seen so far actually! And also the only one to be smart enough to figure you'll mess up the grinder.

      u can also use a blender BUT! once you have it fairly fine pour high concentration rubbing alcohol into the mix and blend a few more times. ince done lay it all out on tin foil light it on fire so everything burns off and then blend it again.
      if done right you end up with what is basically dust
      A MASK IS VERY IMPORTANT

    very practical use of aluminum powder, if you mix with fresh slurry of cement with fine sand and some fiberglass it turns foamy concrete to make light foamed concrete just place on a mold and you have a very light moulded piece of art the cement reacts with aluminum creating millions of bubbles and makes concrete light

    • @zazugee

      but i think that's the process of autoclaved aerated concrete, bc it's Hydrogene gas, you need to autoclave it to conserve the structure, or you will lose the bubbles

      if you do it in water it will all be oxidized as fresh aluminium is really reactive and especially reactive with water

  • @allentremper8243
    @allentremper8243 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Very nice.
    Have you ever had a problem with immediate oxygenation?
    I have been trying to make a fine powder from magnesium shavings.
    I used a ball mill, didn't burp it at all, ran it for 2 days.
    When I went to retrieve my powder, I poured out everything into a sifter with news paper under it to catch the powder, as soon as it passed through the mesh, it spontaneous combusted, this could have been a very bad situation, fortunately I was able to not get burned or burn anything worth mentioning.
    The only reason I bring this up, is after doing more research on what I did wrong, it seems that very fine aluminum will do the same thing, just not as easily.
    I suppose that by using the coffee grinder, the aluminum is constantly being exposed to oxygen, so that it oxidizes as it's ground(just a small amount actually ends up being aluminum oxide, while most stays in the metal form we are after.
    I have seen enough to know that it can still combust after or during the griding process.
    Thanks for the video and info.
    Stay safe, stay strong.

    If you mix this into paint, I believe it will make the paint a more long lasting paint. This is what I am researching. Using such a thing in outdoor paint, to create an even more durable and long lasting paint for outdoors.
    Another method I think may be possible, in small batches, use a mortar and pestle, but add some very find sand into the mortar and pestle, and rub it around with gentle or moderate force, it should ground the foil into a fine powder, and yeah probably wear a face mask while doing it, and do it outside. After this it should be possible to use a kind of winnowing technique to separate the sand from the aluminium powder.

  • @toothpick993
    @toothpick993  11 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    It's black do to more surface area for the aluminium to oxidise. That's why it should always be in a sealed container so it won't oxidise in air. If you have filings of magnesium or zinc you can use that as well. For thicker parts like your chassis, you may just need to file aluminium off it

    I did my aluminium powder in the same way.But I noticed a difference before and after: the conductivity. The aluminium kitchen foil its normally conductive (verified with multimeter), but after the grinding, it becomes an insulator. Why?.

    • @CB-ck9dg
      @CB-ck9dg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Nice observation. Aluminium foil is a continuous solid in the metallic state. As such, it is quite conductive. Period.
      Very fine aluminium powder is finely subdivided and - like foil - covered in a very thin layer of aluminium oxide, a very good electrical insulator. This is because aluminium is a very reactive metal: without its protective oxide coating, it would not survive the atmospheric environment (the oxide passivates it). When a common DMM's prongs are pressed onto the foil, the oxide layer breaks, thus establishing conductive paths between the foil's surface and its interior, which is very conductive. Therefore, aluminum foil as a whole is conductive. With powder, it is a different state of affairs: the prongs make contact with the powder, but it is not sufficiently forceful to peel the oxide away due to the medium offering little mechanical stiffness. Moreover, grains barely touch each other, making conduction difficult. I also think that grinding may increase the thickness of the oxide layer, making it even more insulating. Hope it helps,

      +DJBassTiJaneOfficial Smaller blenders usually have a higher rpm and would reduce the aluminum to a finer powder.

    I was considering this, but after watching the video I realized it is much cheaper to just buy powder rather than waste HOURS of my life grinding. The powder is like 20-30 €/kg in consumer stores and a lot cheaper if you can buy wholesale.

    Beginners question: Why does grinding down aluminium "ruin" the coffe grinder? Can't you just wash it out thoroughly and use it again for food or whatever?

    • @InDmand
      @InDmand 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +FlyingM86 you could, but aluminium is so toxic you really don't want to take that risk. I'm not sure bout all grinders but i've noticed in the ones I owned there are tiny tiny gaps where the pin from the motor comes out from and stuff does get stuck in there, as well as a certain see through grinder i had, after a couple weeks you can see bits getting through impossibly small gaps.

    • @toothpick993
      @toothpick993  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Well I personally wouldn't use this for coffee again. The fine dust can get into the tiny cracks and wouldn't be easy to get out so when using it for coffee that aluminium could get into your coffee and contaminate it. Also the aluminium wrecks the rotor blades after constant use.
