@@alphacat77 I haven't played the game, so I don't know if that's actually good advice from the game based on her stats or whatever. But if I were making a Konosuba game, I would have the game constantly suggest you use Aqua as a joke. Like, she'd have the highest in all stats like she does in the anime, except that her meme stat (luck) is the lowest, so it never works out.
I'm 100% convinced that the creator of Girlfriend Girlfriend has the series take place in the same world as Aho Girl, seeing how the collective intelligence of every character is woefully low and steadily decreases as time passes. I know they're the creator of both series, and all this one really needs is a single easter egg to establish a connection and I'll totally believe it.
It's that sorted, clean, recyclable trash that doesn't smell and makes you feel like you've changed the world for the better in some small way when you throw it in the bin :D

I’m willing to give Girlfriend Girlfriend a thumbs up on the simple fact that it’s way more wholesome and less stupid than a lot of other harem anime, despite appearances, just because it avoids the skeevyness of other modern harem anime by instead of having protag kun essentially cheat on all of the girls with each other, instead just be open right off and say “look, I like both of you, both of you like me and get along well enough, can we try this poly thing out?” It’s downright progressive.

I gave the manga a try and had quite a bit of fun honestly, it does get pretty repetitive sometimes but the sheer himbo factor of it all keeps it entertaining
I actually kinda like the writing in their ads, though. At least the ones focusing on the characters. Never played the game, but every ad with them is really good the first time I watch it. Deathknight is a bog-standard worthless starter unit and everyone knows it, so this gives him a nice underdog/outcast character archetype. I wanted him to get swole in that training montage ad he gets. I know Raid's ad team became notoriously good for indiscriminate bombardment, but now that their name's definitely out there, they're continuing to adapt and improve. I still don't care about the game, but I kinda think they got a glow-up. So for sure an anime adaptation is doomed to poorer writing than the sauce and would 100% be fit for this list

I expected Girlfriend Girlfriend to just be terrible, but it's actually really funny. I particularly love Saki Saki's writing and voice actor. I don't care for the MC much, but aside from that its a genuinely good watch.
Its at least the most honest harem anime, where the guy is actually trying to handle the logistics of having a harem. Its doing it poorly in how each girl is so complicit instead of actively competitive. But its actually trying to make an harem actually function. The trying is the important part because in most cases of this genre, the dude is doing NOTHING and the harem still maintains itself somehow.
See I think the best part of Girlfriend Girlfriend for me is that Saki feels more like the main character, or at least is on equal footing with Naoya. I agree completely that Saki's VA does some amazing work here. The cast works really really well together, similar to how Konosuba was performed, I feel like these actors were delivering their lines together and having actual conversations instead of being recorded separately. I disliked Noaya at first but he has grown on me a ton, probably mostly due to his VA being the same as Yuji from Jujutsu Kaisen, and I think his 100% honesty rule plays really well into the premise of the show and its comedy.
Well, not all anime/manga have to be Fullmetal alchemist. Sometimes if only have to follow the only rule of the entertainment industry: Don´t be boring. And girlfriend, girlfriend clearly isn´t any boring at all.

I was really enjoying Shield Hero until that part where Raptalia looked so happy to have her slave sealed put back on. I really wish they just did what the Light Novels did and say she wanted it but only as a safeguard since as "property" she actually has some legal protection to keep racists from murdering her than if she was free.
Girlfriend, Girlfriend. Where the MC is Polyam in his heart, and invites some girls he loves who are just just as clueless about it as him to give it a try. I love that he tries to treat them equally, and the humor from overcommunicating instead of under communicating, as the two greatest skills to hone in a poly relationship are communication and time management.
@@minskghoul There's a manga called 'The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You', and it might just be what you're looking for. Basically, a guy gets rejected 100 times by different girls due to a Love God making a mistake, and is then promised that he'll get 100 different soulmates. Basically Girlfriend, Girlfriend but infinitely better in every single way. It's hilarious with actual great comedy, all the girls so far (currently 15 in the manga) are all great and have entertaining and unique personalities, and the MC (Aijou Rentarou) is probably one of the best harem MCs ever made. He's the definition of what a chad really is. It's a great manga, and really entertaining too. Currently 69 chapters in and it's still as entertaining and fun as it was when it first started, with no dip in quality too. The author also promised that there will be 100 girlfriends, and with the way the manga is going, I think they might actually deliver. Give it a read, it's a solid 9/10 for me. (Karane and Shizuka best girls btw)

I found the initial couple of episodes to be uber-cringe, but the situation it sets up and the selfish tantrums of the MeToober end up being a couple of laughs to watch later on.
I genuinely like Battle in 5 Seconds because of Akira’s borderline sociopathic character traits. Rather than working together, he actively uses everyone around him like tools without making it obvious which is the kind of behavior you’d actually expect to work in a death game over wide eyed optimism.
And the best part is, in the manga, at least, Akira does go through some character development, learning it's okay to actually trust some people, and avoids going full-on 100% sociopath, unlike every villain that serves as a darker reflection of those character traits, including his own father.
Also like Seirei Gensouki, Cheat Pharmacist, and while I didn't see it on here, would have expected it over either of those and Battle Game, Tsukimichi.
As far as I am in the manga, Akira actually cares deeply about Yuri. You can actually notice his fear and sometimes even desperation when she's in danger. It's a nice bit of character development for someone who was essentially using her at first.
-_- It is not the same situation. The collar was clearly not necessary to prevent her from attacking anyone and was just a pointless instrument of oppression. There was neither a narative nor rational reason for her to keep wearing it in the first place place. When Naofumi lost faith in Raphtalia after she was freed by the Spear in a rigged duel, Raphtalia offered to have her curse reapplied if it would mean that he could trust her again. The curse functioned as a lie detector and physically prevented her from trying to harm or disobey him, even when he slept, but it also was a tool to help him find her whenever they were seperated, and to Raphtalia, it was proof Naofumi wouldn't abandon her. The two are similar in concept only. Shield hero setup that plot point with forty chapters of abuse, mutual suffering and shared recovery from their past trauma. The only setup for the collar was a random girl assaulting you when you took a stroll in the woods.

Physically recoiled from the screen at 7:29 because I remember buying that light novel, enjoying the first five chapters and one paragraph as Fun Iseikai Trash... and then I hit the second paragraph of chapter six. One sentence was about how the now 17-year-old girl character who had not aged over the five-year timeskip was indistinguishable from the 12-year-olds around her. Very next sentence contained the phrase "her alluring cuteness". nOPE!
Like I sort of get it. It would be like having a 16-17 year old character in western media. But seriously, those ages SHOULD be mistranslated to whatever is appropriate for the language. It's an instant rejct whenever a manga/anime goes that route.

Seeing Girlfriend Girlfriend on here makes me look forward to the day where he will be able to review 'The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You'. For those who don't know it's a fricking hilarious manga where the main character, after being rejected a 100 times, is told by the Love God that he has 100 soulmates and he will start to meet them all soon. The thing is, the story manages to make all the characters interesting including the male lead, which rarely happens in harem stories. It subverts expectations in hilarious ways but also heartwarming ones. Like, for an example of the latter, the harem girls end up befriending each other and being nice to each other for reasons outside of being interested in the same man, which, I don't even know if other harem stories do that. I anyone manages to see this comment, I hope you give this manga a try

Honestly, Battle 5 Seconds After Meeting, is unironically my favorite anime this season, but really that's probably because I dove into the manga after watching the first couple of episodes. And while the anime is a really faithful adaptation, it does suffer from the condensing. The first few episodes all cover a chapter or two, which basically serves as the prologue, but the rest of the season, the third program, is basically trying to condense down 60+ chapters. But, honestly, I can't recommend the manga enough. It might not be the absolute best, but it's really solid and enjoyable, even if the author did abandon the namesake premise after like 3 chapters. There's 153 or so translated chapters out there.
I did the same thing. The premise was interesting enough for the anime, and then I binged the manga and the whole thing was a wild ride. I need to check to see how far I'm behind now.
You know, D-cide almost makes me sad because you can kinda see that the creators have some really good persona esque ideas! Even the arc you describe in the video, in abstract, is good, it just seems like execution. Urinonically I’d like to see what that studio can pull off with more work.

I feel like drugstore in another world is a show i would show my future kids (if i have them) because this just feels so watchable for a family to enjoy and sit back to. Definetly its one to not be taken seriously because i have never seen a show that screams it is for kids.
Naofumi only applies the curse to the demihumans because the curse can only be applied once, so if they take his mark, they are garaunteed a life of freedom. He uses it as a loophole that protects them from being enslaved by anyone else. The message I took from the series is that Naofumi is a guy willing to commit the lesser of two evils in the pursuit of a safer, more just world.

And buying slaves and setting them free doesn't make the world better, every time you buy a slave from a slave trader they will then go on to capture or buy more slaves, there is no such thing as ethical slavery or ethical slave buying, if anything Naofumi openly performing business with a slave trader regularily and walking around with two of his slaves is a massive advertisement and helps enlargen/ legitimize the slave trade. When even the noble heroes are walking around with slaves what's to make it immoral for any one else to own slaves? Also Naofumi doesn't care about making a safer, more just world, all he cares about is himself and those around him, not the greater good and we've seen that time and time again. From denying giving a seed that would save a village from famine, to always focusing on profits above human life (except when its important characters and not random people). And to make it clear Naofumi doesn't believe slavery is evil. In episode 3 when confronted by Spear Hero about him owning a slave his reply was literally "Its legal bro. You think its immoral? That's just your opinion bro.", I'm paraphrasing a bit but that was literally what he said and the show tried to paint him as being right? Naofumi isn't a lesser of two evils kind of guy, he's an guy who pretends there is no good or neutral approaches and has his abused 10 yo slave and his literal monster baby girl (who was raised by him) constantly reaffirm him. The other heroes are egotistical smooth brained idiots but Naofumi is definitely the worst one (As of the until the Spirit turtle saga).

He was treated like a criminal, called a rapist when he wasn't, a nd discriminated against because of the 3 hero cult religion in the verse. And all of the selfish deeds you say naofimi committed came from the world hating him. He thought about results over others. Raphtalia often disagreed with that mentality too. He changed by the end of the season. Not saying naofumi had the right mindset the whole time but dealing with the discrimination of the demihumans is a whole can of worms that he took on just so he could have a party to accomplish his mission. I'm so glad people are finally acknowledging Shield Hero for the terrible writing it is. I remember reading the manga, getting too grossed out to continue and then being greatly alarmed to hear people whose opinion's I trusted online saying it was some kind of revolutionary masterpiece. I'm sure there's a nuanced way of handling that false rape accusation in media, but lets me honest, shield hero didn't achieve it. It didn't explore the legal failings or consequences of that kind of behaviour - it was basically just 'wymen bad and scary', the only girls you can trust are LITERAL slaves who can't lie or betray you. They're not making a political statement, it's just typical incel fearmongering. And look, I'd maybe give the shield hero a free pass on the first slave, but past that he had like, a bunch of options and KEPT DOING IT. One time someone even removes the slave brand and he PUTS IT BACK ON!? And no, 'this traumatised 12 year old girl said she wants to be a slave, so that makes it ok...' is not what consent looks like. No wonder the author's so terrified of 'false rape claims'. And look, if it had been up front about it being a dumb harem power fantasy that hadn't had a lot of thought put into it where slave was more of a character archetype than an actual social status, I'd be totally ok with it. Anime is trash and dumb and we love it, but idk, Shield Hero just read way too much like it was written by someone who'd seen these should and was like, yes, this is an ideal and good world to live in.

Girlfriend Girlfriend is actually doing a great job of representing the nuance, challenges, and genuine experience of embarking in a polyamorous relationship. The main character is highly unrealistic, but being upfront about everything makes the strongest foundation for a polyamory relationship. Of course it is all dialed to 11, because anime and drama, but the internal monologs of the characters are so relatable. You're convinced it works since our idea of monogamous relationships being the norm is actually quite arbitrary.

The MC had to be persistent to sell the idea that he wanted a poly not only for selfish reasons but rather because he believed in it as well. In the end they are 2 consenting individuals who are free to make any decision they want.
@@amandak.4246 I think we need to differentiate exactly what happened in the anime with the realities of most people discovering or starting poly. Of course in real life you're supposed to take your time to discuss the subject matter for days, months or even years depending on the couple. If you think it's immoral to change the terms of a relationship from the start then I'm inclined to believe you've either never experienced poly or you got coerced into it (in which case I'm sorry you went thru that). There is no good way of telling your current SO that you are looking into exploring non-monogamy. As an individual you have the right to seek the relationship that will fulfill you the most, and that applies to both partners. If each individual wants a different type of relationship then they're both fundamentally incompatible to no fault of either and the best thing to do in that case is to break up. It would be inconsiderate to preemptively break up with a partner without even discussing if they would also be open to the same relationship as you so empathy calls for a discussion first. Of course there will always be a pressure when being told your partner wants to explore poly. But it isn't always the direct fault of the exploring partner but rather from the reality of the circumstances. Having said that, there are definitely bad and malicious ways to bring up poly. Thinking critically I think the way in which the confession was handled is definitely problematic. Just finding a potential partner and presenting them to your current SO is ludicrous specially with the expectation of an answer at the spot. I'm willing to give the anime a pass because it's obvious that it wanted to dwell in the actual living aspects of being in a poly and not HOW you get there. I believe it's an accurate representation of poly not due to the way it started but rather how it showcases the internal feelings and insecurities all the characters are having. Having been in a poly I can relate with all those feelings and insecurities. And the last thing, I said consenting individuals not consenting adults. I don't expect either of them to act like rational adults. I care about leveling the playing field, just like she's a 15 year old teen going thru puberty so is the guy and if they're BOTH making a bad decision because of their lack of experience then I'm fine with it.

I honestly prefer the longer dives like in the winter 2021 mode. I often don't have time to actually watch the shows, so a deep dive into how bad they are, picking them apart for the funnies is actually what I'm here for
Girlfriend and battle game in 5 seconds both have awesome mangas. I even think they adopted the girlfriend manga pretty well and what comes after the anime is really dope. Battle is adapting like 50 chapters in like 6 episodes for the third arc which is gonna be challenging, but I highly suggest reading the manga if you like a series with 5head characters and cool powers.

I'm so glad to hear you spell out my opinion on The Detective Is Already Dead, I had a full on "Am I taking crazy pills" moment when I read people saying stuff like "I can't believe they blew it after such a good first episode." I honestly wondered if I'd watched the wrong show or something. I couldn't believe how bad it was, both for that episode and as the show carried on.
Well, the first epsiode did have movie quality production value. I mean, that alone had me intrigued. But yeah, it never gets anywhere near that quality and I am keeping up with the show. It is not bad because I do like the banter between Siesta and the MC but it is a lot of talking. It is very much like how inspectre was.
I was only interested in the show to see the Hololive cameo tbh, but after sitting through the whole first episode and only thinking after, "Wow... I cannot believe I wasted 40 mins watching that," I decided I was better off waiting and looking up the cameo on youtube

The one saving grace i’ve found for Spirit Chronicles is how every few episodes it dumps the secondary cast and replaces them with entirely new characters. Dunno if it will continue to do so, or if it will circle back to previous groups at some point, but it’s an interesting enough mechanic to keep me watching so far.
This is actually pretty much what happens! New faces are introduced with the old ones and we get some more information of the old ones making them more interesting (as of LN Vol. 14 the spirit girls are still kind of unexplored (in case your wondering currently the show is at the end of Vol. 3).
the thing that bugs me about battle game in 5 sec, is that he has this super flexible ability that can do anything.. but he can only ever use the cannon because he is always around people who think he has the cannon who immediately tell the enemies he has a cannon
Which is honestly just such a waste of what could have been a really interesting power. It could have turned basically every fight into a contest of wits, where the goal of the fight could have been to trick the opponent into revealing their weakness and then convincing them that he has a power that's effective against them. Instead we just get "hey, remember that OP power you saw that one person use? Yeah, that's what I have."

Because that's what he has to do. if he suddenly try to convince people he has a totally different ability every single time to have variety, then people will start to question him and he can't use his ability. It is a very versatile but very double-edged ability.
*spoiler alert* In the latest episodes he tells the female protag his real power is telepathy, letting them talk without other people listening, where he reveals his real power letting him use her to change his power when needed.
God, I always love your script writing. You have such a way with words that no other big anime YTer seems to have - the density of wordplay, allusions, and other rhetorical devices is simply fantastic to listen to.
MB's critique of Spirit Chronicles is spookily accurate to my own experience with it. The first half does a good job of introducing Rio as a well-rounded protagonist. He's a (very) recently orphaned kid who escapes poverty through a combination of luck and good intentions. Having 20 years of past life in a 7-year-old body means he carried over some kendo training and education, but he's only really exceptional compared to his 7-year-old classmates. He can use Spirit Magic; which basically just makes him a D&D Sorcerer in a world full of D&D Wizards; some stuff comes naturally to him but he can't just study his way into getting new magic. Overall his accomplishments at this point come from a mixture of hard work, general friendliness, and ability to endure or ignore quips at his expense. There isn't even a romantic interest established at this point, in part because he's a pre-teen, but also because almost everyone he knows ignores him because he's just a commoner they don't think should be there in the first place. His one friendly relationship is literally a teacher/student platonic deal. All this to say, up until this point Rio isn't some Chosen One overpowered protagonist, he just has a bit of a head start compared to other kids his age due to the whole reincarnation thing. Then the second half of the show happens and it turns out he literally is The Chosen One, his powers rapidly grow out of hand, and girls start falling for him all over the place. When people compared the protagonist to Kirito from SAO I thought they were crazy during the first half of the show... then the second half hits and the comparison becomes a lot clearer. In fact, Kirito might have better characterization than Kio, and I can't think of a worse insult to Spirit Chronicles than that.
Kinda surprised Peach Boy Riverside wasn't on here. I don't think I've had such tonal whiplash from Episode 2 to 3 in such a long time. It was a really weird decision to randomize the episodes.
Peach Boy is generally a pretty decent show, that is just absolutely destroyed by the fact that the episodes are aired out of order. 4, 1, 2, 7, 11, 12, 5, 6 3, 8, 10, 9 That's the originally intended order, just to show how scrambled it is. Episode 4 was supposed to be the first episode, while the two episodes airing next were originally the fifth and sixth episodes.

Konosuba: FD is actually so fun. My favorite part of the game is that it's actually designed so that you can use Megumin, full fainting drawback and all, and still be able to 3* everything.
I’d love if you could go with the longer format for these in the future. I think a lot of the gold in these is when you dig deep into the details if how uniquely terrible/trashy a particular anime is. You don’t get the same relish from looking at it from a surface level. Also, I’d appreciate more length, as these are my favourite comfort videos from you, I rewatch them on a semi regular basis when my brain needs a break.
I like drugstore Isekai. It's the anime of the season that I watch for comfort, just turn my brain off and enjoy. It's cutesy, silly and makes me laugh sometimes. The gags Geoff mentioned really are completely unoriginal and not funny, but that's not what makes me laugh. It's in the delivery of the side jokes (is this a thing?) in some of the dialogs that get me off-guard.
I love seeing all the newest hot trash but I would LOVE to see you go back and tackle last season's worst hits as well, ESPECIALLY Fairy Ranmaru. Look, I was excited when it first came out, I'll watch anything with fairies in it. But I need SOMEONE to talk to about how hilariously bad it is, how one-note every episode plot is and how all the magical boy designs look like they're from totally different anime. If you're looking for the best trash TRUST me, it can't be beat
"The Shampoo Zone" The moment when my Ranma nostalgia heart-tug was equalled by the jaw dropping realization that Rumiko Takahashi created an archetypal character who has become an unchanging staple of this sub-genre as, more or less, a, throwaway gag. God, that woman is brilliant.
I don't know. Spirit chronicles is very cliche but there is a weird amount of detail and mystery put into everything that I am still engaged with the story.
11:30 so, you can probably guess that Sentai and Kamen rider doesn’t really do this. Usually if the monster of the week represents anything, it’s for some rando side character without that much depth. That being said, there have been some fantastic use of past trauma through monster fights. One of the best examples being Ahim avenging her family in Gokaiger. The monster himself, who looks like if a buzzwole was also a millennium item, isn’t really intimidating or represents a major issue. It’s ahims emotions and the importance of her role in the team that makes the fight work so well. Another big one that comes to mind is a certain fight near the end of Kamen Rider Gaim, but it’s such a huge story turn I’m not gonna spoil it. Go watch Gaim.
Not gonna lie, those of us in the Crunchyroll comments have agreed that we only watch Cheat Pharmacist to kill time before watching Tsukimichi. And hell, that's the warmup to Dragon Maid.

Detective is already dead is like.... uh... Bad Mystery meets Metal Gear Solid meets Resident evil meets Waifu wars meets the bad writers of all of them. It is so bad its good, especially when it "tries".
10:00 i might have gotten that wrong, but just to throw in what "traumerei" aka "Träumerei" is usually used for would be something like "a little, good-feeling dream, maybe a daydream you like to escape into every now and then. I’m willing to give Girlfriend Girlfriend a thumbs up on the simple fact that it’s way more wholesome and less stupid than a lot of other harem anime, despite appearances, just because it avoids the skeevyness of other modern harem anime by instead of having protag kun essentially cheat on all of the girls with each other, instead just be open right off and say “look, I like both of you, both of you like me and get along well enough, can we try this poly thing out?”
It’s downright progressive.

I actually kinda like the writing in their ads, though. At least the ones focusing on the characters. Never played the game, but every ad with them is really good the first time I watch it. Deathknight is a bog-standard worthless starter unit and everyone knows it, so this gives him a nice underdog/outcast character archetype. I wanted him to get swole in that training montage ad he gets. I know Raid's ad team became notoriously good for indiscriminate bombardment, but now that their name's definitely out there, they're continuing to adapt and improve. I still don't care about the game, but I kinda think they got a glow-up.
So for sure an anime adaptation is doomed to poorer writing than the sauce and would 100% be fit for this list

Its at least the most honest harem anime, where the guy is actually trying to handle the logistics of having a harem. Its doing it poorly in how each girl is so complicit instead of actively competitive. But its actually trying to make an harem actually function. The trying is the important part because in most cases of this genre, the dude is doing NOTHING and the harem still maintains itself somehow.
See I think the best part of Girlfriend Girlfriend for me is that Saki feels more like the main character, or at least is on equal footing with Naoya. I agree completely that Saki's VA does some amazing work here. The cast works really really well together, similar to how Konosuba was performed, I feel like these actors were delivering their lines together and having actual conversations instead of being recorded separately.
I disliked Noaya at first but he has grown on me a ton, probably mostly due to his VA being the same as Yuji from Jujutsu Kaisen, and I think his 100% honesty rule plays really well into the premise of the show and its comedy.
Well, not all anime/manga have to be Fullmetal alchemist. Sometimes if only have to follow the only rule of the entertainment industry: Don´t be boring. And girlfriend, girlfriend clearly isn´t any boring at all.

I was really enjoying Shield Hero until that part where Raptalia looked so happy to have her slave sealed put back on. I really wish they just did what the Light Novels did and say she wanted it but only as a safeguard since as "property" she actually has some legal protection to keep racists from murdering her than if she was free.
Girlfriend, Girlfriend. Where the MC is Polyam in his heart, and invites some girls he loves who are just just as clueless about it as him to give it a try. I love that he tries to treat them equally, and the humor from overcommunicating instead of under communicating, as the two greatest skills to hone in a poly relationship are communication and time management.
I would love to see anime with actual polyamory instead of another stupid harem.
It's a decent show, episode 1 gave me my best laughs of the year and the rest of the anime is ok too, I've caught up to the manga.
@@minskghoul There's a manga called 'The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You', and it might just be what you're looking for. Basically, a guy gets rejected 100 times by different girls due to a Love God making a mistake, and is then promised that he'll get 100 different soulmates. Basically Girlfriend, Girlfriend but infinitely better in every single way. It's hilarious with actual great comedy, all the girls so far (currently 15 in the manga) are all great and have entertaining and unique personalities, and the MC (Aijou Rentarou) is probably one of the best harem MCs ever made. He's the definition of what a chad really is. It's a great manga, and really entertaining too. Currently 69 chapters in and it's still as entertaining and fun as it was when it first started, with no dip in quality too. The author also promised that there will be 100 girlfriends, and with the way the manga is going, I think they might actually deliver. Give it a read, it's a solid 9/10 for me. (Karane and Shizuka best girls btw)

I found the initial couple of episodes to be uber-cringe, but the situation it sets up and the selfish tantrums of the MeToober end up being a couple of laughs to watch later on.
I genuinely like Battle in 5 Seconds because of Akira’s borderline sociopathic character traits. Rather than working together, he actively uses everyone around him like tools without making it obvious which is the kind of behavior you’d actually expect to work in a death game over wide eyed optimism.
And the best part is, in the manga, at least, Akira does go through some character development, learning it's okay to actually trust some people, and avoids going full-on 100% sociopath, unlike every villain that serves as a darker reflection of those character traits, including his own father.
Also like Seirei Gensouki, Cheat Pharmacist, and while I didn't see it on here, would have expected it over either of those and Battle Game, Tsukimichi.

It is not the same situation. The collar was clearly not necessary to prevent her from attacking anyone and was just a pointless instrument of oppression. There was neither a narative nor rational reason for her to keep wearing it in the first place place. When Naofumi lost faith in Raphtalia after she was freed by the Spear in a rigged duel, Raphtalia offered to have her curse reapplied if it would mean that he could trust her again. The curse functioned as a lie detector and physically prevented her from trying to harm or disobey him, even when he slept, but it also was a tool to help him find her whenever they were seperated, and to Raphtalia, it was proof Naofumi wouldn't abandon her. The two are similar in concept only. Shield hero setup that plot point with forty chapters of abuse, mutual suffering and shared recovery from their past trauma. The only setup for the collar was a random girl assaulting you when you took a stroll in the woods.

Physically recoiled from the screen at 7:29 because I remember buying that light novel, enjoying the first five chapters and one paragraph as Fun Iseikai Trash... and then I hit the second paragraph of chapter six. One sentence was about how the now 17-year-old girl character who had not aged over the five-year timeskip was indistinguishable from the 12-year-olds around her. Very next sentence contained the phrase "her alluring cuteness". nOPE!
Like I sort of get it. It would be like having a 16-17 year old character in western media. But seriously, those ages SHOULD be mistranslated to whatever is appropriate for the language.
It's an instant rejct whenever a manga/anime goes that route.

Seeing Girlfriend Girlfriend on here makes me look forward to the day where he will be able to review 'The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You'. For those who don't know it's a fricking hilarious manga where the main character, after being rejected a 100 times, is told by the Love God that he has 100 soulmates and he will start to meet them all soon. The thing is, the story manages to make all the characters interesting including the male lead, which rarely happens in harem stories. It subverts expectations in hilarious ways but also heartwarming ones. Like, for an example of the latter, the harem girls end up befriending each other and being nice to each other for reasons outside of being interested in the same man, which, I don't even know if other harem stories do that. I anyone manages to see this comment, I hope you give this manga a try
Mahou Sensei Negima had some of that, and it is a really great thing to see when it happens.

I don't even watch anime all that often anymore but I always tune into these videos just to hear Geoff's increasingly bizarre and complex descriptions of trashfires of varying intensities
Honestly, Battle 5 Seconds After Meeting, is unironically my favorite anime this season, but really that's probably because I dove into the manga after watching the first couple of episodes. And while the anime is a really faithful adaptation, it does suffer from the condensing. The first few episodes all cover a chapter or two, which basically serves as the prologue, but the rest of the season, the third program, is basically trying to condense down 60+ chapters.
But, honestly, I can't recommend the manga enough. It might not be the absolute best, but it's really solid and enjoyable, even if the author did abandon the namesake premise after like 3 chapters. There's 153 or so translated chapters out there.
I did the same thing. The premise was interesting enough for the anime, and then I binged the manga and the whole thing was a wild ride. I need to check to see how far I'm behind now.
To be fair, the chapters are really short. Not that much is happening in one chapter, which has like 20 pages or smth?

“Maybe the bar for this genre is too low.” Flashback to Shield Hero, and its message of, “Maybe supporting slavery is good, actually.”
Naofumi only applies the curse to the demihumans because the curse can only be applied once, so if they take his mark, they are garaunteed a life of freedom. He uses it as a loophole that protects them from being enslaved by anyone else. The message I took from the series is that Naofumi is a guy willing to commit the lesser of two evils in the pursuit of a safer, more just world.

And buying slaves and setting them free doesn't make the world better, every time you buy a slave from a slave trader they will then go on to capture or buy more slaves, there is no such thing as ethical slavery or ethical slave buying, if anything Naofumi openly performing business with a slave trader regularily and walking around with two of his slaves is a massive advertisement and helps enlargen/ legitimize the slave trade. When even the noble heroes are walking around with slaves what's to make it immoral for any one else to own slaves?
Also Naofumi doesn't care about making a safer, more just world, all he cares about is himself and those around him, not the greater good and we've seen that time and time again. From denying giving a seed that would save a village from famine, to always focusing on profits above human life (except when its important characters and not random people).
And to make it clear Naofumi doesn't believe slavery is evil. In episode 3 when confronted by Spear Hero about him owning a slave his reply was literally "Its legal bro. You think its immoral? That's just your opinion bro.", I'm paraphrasing a bit but that was literally what he said and the show tried to paint him as being right?
Naofumi isn't a lesser of two evils kind of guy, he's an guy who pretends there is no good or neutral approaches and has his abused 10 yo slave and his literal monster baby girl (who was raised by him) constantly reaffirm him. The other heroes are egotistical smooth brained idiots but Naofumi is definitely the worst one (As of the until the Spirit turtle saga).

In order to fulfill his mission he has to turn to buying slaves and other things just to fulfill his mission because the world criminally hated him. And all of the selfish deeds you say naofimi committed came from the world hating him. He thought about results over others. Raphtalia often disagreed with that mentality too. He changed by the end of the season.
Not saying naofumi had the right mindset the whole time but dealing with the discrimination of the demihumans is a whole can of worms that he took on just so he could have a party to accomplish his mission.

I'm so glad people are finally acknowledging Shield Hero for the terrible writing it is. I remember reading the manga, getting too grossed out to continue and then being greatly alarmed to hear people whose opinion's I trusted online saying it was some kind of revolutionary masterpiece.
I'm sure there's a nuanced way of handling that false rape accusation in media, but lets me honest, shield hero didn't achieve it. It didn't explore the legal failings or consequences of that kind of behaviour - it was basically just 'wymen bad and scary', the only girls you can trust are LITERAL slaves who can't lie or betray you. They're not making a political statement, it's just typical incel fearmongering.
And look, I'd maybe give the shield hero a free pass on the first slave, but past that he had like, a bunch of options and KEPT DOING IT. One time someone even removes the slave brand and he PUTS IT BACK ON!? And no, 'this traumatised 12 year old girl said she wants to be a slave, so that makes it ok...' is not what consent looks like. No wonder the author's so terrified of 'false rape claims'.
And look, if it had been up front about it being a dumb harem power fantasy that hadn't had a lot of thought put into it where slave was more of a character archetype than an actual social status, I'd be totally ok with it. Anime is trash and dumb and we love it, but idk, Shield Hero just read way too much like it was written by someone who'd seen these should and was like, yes, this is an ideal and good world to live in.

Girlfriend Girlfriend is actually doing a great job of representing the nuance, challenges, and genuine experience of embarking in a polyamorous relationship. The main character is highly unrealistic, but being upfront about everything makes the strongest foundation for a polyamory relationship.
Of course it is all dialed to 11, because anime and drama, but the internal monologs of the characters are so relatable. You're convinced it works since our idea of monogamous relationships being the norm is actually quite arbitrary.
I just want more positive portrayals of polyamoury that aren't just cheating storylines

The MC had to be persistent to sell the idea that he wanted a poly not only for selfish reasons but rather because he believed in it as well. In the end they are 2 consenting individuals who are free to make any decision they want.
@@amandak.4246 I think we need to differentiate exactly what happened in the anime with the realities of most people discovering or starting poly. Of course in real life you're supposed to take your time to discuss the subject matter for days, months or even years depending on the couple.
If you think it's immoral to change the terms of a relationship from the start then I'm inclined to believe you've either never experienced poly or you got coerced into it (in which case I'm sorry you went thru that).
There is no good way of telling your current SO that you are looking into exploring non-monogamy. As an individual you have the right to seek the relationship that will fulfill you the most, and that applies to both partners.
If each individual wants a different type of relationship then they're both fundamentally incompatible to no fault of either and the best thing to do in that case is to break up. It would be inconsiderate to preemptively break up with a partner without even discussing if they would also be open to the same relationship as you so empathy calls for a discussion first.
Of course there will always be a pressure when being told your partner wants to explore poly. But it isn't always the direct fault of the exploring partner but rather from the reality of the circumstances. Having said that, there are definitely bad and malicious ways to bring up poly.
Thinking critically I think the way in which the confession was handled is definitely problematic. Just finding a potential partner and presenting them to your current SO is ludicrous specially with the expectation of an answer at the spot.
I'm willing to give the anime a pass because it's obvious that it wanted to dwell in the actual living aspects of being in a poly and not HOW you get there. I believe it's an accurate representation of poly not due to the way it started but rather how it showcases the internal feelings and insecurities all the characters are having. Having been in a poly I can relate with all those feelings and insecurities.
And the last thing, I said consenting individuals not consenting adults. I don't expect either of them to act like rational adults. I care about leveling the playing field, just like she's a 15 year old teen going thru puberty so is the guy and if they're BOTH making a bad decision because of their lack of experience then I'm fine with it.
If kidnapping people and forcing them to watch anime is wrong then I don't wanna be right. 😤

I honestly prefer the longer dives like in the winter 2021 mode. I often don't have time to actually watch the shows, so a deep dive into how bad they are, picking them apart for the funnies is actually what I'm here for
Girlfriend and battle game in 5 seconds both have awesome mangas. I even think they adopted the girlfriend manga pretty well and what comes after the anime is really dope. Battle is adapting like 50 chapters in like 6 episodes for the third arc which is gonna be challenging, but I highly suggest reading the manga if you like a series with 5head characters and cool powers.

I'm so glad to hear you spell out my opinion on The Detective Is Already Dead, I had a full on "Am I taking crazy pills" moment when I read people saying stuff like "I can't believe they blew it after such a good first episode." I honestly wondered if I'd watched the wrong show or something. I couldn't believe how bad it was, both for that episode and as the show carried on.

The one saving grace i’ve found for Spirit Chronicles is how every few episodes it dumps the secondary cast and replaces them with entirely new characters. Dunno if it will continue to do so, or if it will circle back to previous groups at some point, but it’s an interesting enough mechanic to keep me watching so far.
This is actually pretty much what happens! New faces are introduced with the old ones and we get some more information of the old ones making them more interesting (as of LN Vol. 14 the spirit girls are still kind of unexplored (in case your wondering currently the show is at the end of Vol. 3).

the thing that bugs me about battle game in 5 sec, is that he has this super flexible ability that can do anything.. but he can only ever use the cannon because he is always around people who think he has the cannon who immediately tell the enemies he has a cannon
Which is honestly just such a waste of what could have been a really interesting power. It could have turned basically every fight into a contest of wits, where the goal of the fight could have been to trick the opponent into revealing their weakness and then convincing them that he has a power that's effective against them. Instead we just get "hey, remember that OP power you saw that one person use? Yeah, that's what I have."

Because that's what he has to do. if he suddenly try to convince people he has a totally different ability every single time to have variety, then people will start to question him and he can't use his ability. It is a very versatile but very double-edged ability.

In the latest episodes he tells the female protag his real power is telepathy, letting them talk without other people listening, where he reveals his real power letting him use her to change his power when needed.
God, I always love your script writing. You have such a way with words that no other big anime YTer seems to have - the density of wordplay, allusions, and other rhetorical devices is simply fantastic to listen to.
MB's critique of Spirit Chronicles is spookily accurate to my own experience with it. The first half does a good job of introducing Rio as a well-rounded protagonist. He's a (very) recently orphaned kid who escapes poverty through a combination of luck and good intentions. Having 20 years of past life in a 7-year-old body means he carried over some kendo training and education, but he's only really exceptional compared to his 7-year-old classmates. He can use Spirit Magic; which basically just makes him a D&D Sorcerer in a world full of D&D Wizards; some stuff comes naturally to him but he can't just study his way into getting new magic. Overall his accomplishments at this point come from a mixture of hard work, general friendliness, and ability to endure or ignore quips at his expense. There isn't even a romantic interest established at this point, in part because he's a pre-teen, but also because almost everyone he knows ignores him because he's just a commoner they don't think should be there in the first place. His one friendly relationship is literally a teacher/student platonic deal. All this to say, up until this point Rio isn't some Chosen One overpowered protagonist, he just has a bit of a head start compared to other kids his age due to the whole reincarnation thing.
Then the second half of the show happens and it turns out he literally is The Chosen One, his powers rapidly grow out of hand, and girls start falling for him all over the place. When people compared the protagonist to Kirito from SAO I thought they were crazy during the first half of the show... then the second half hits and the comparison becomes a lot clearer. In fact, Kirito might have better characterization than Kio, and I can't think of a worse insult to Spirit Chronicles than that.
I’m really hoping for him to cover the trash from last Spring as well! Also, I like the longer video format. These types of videos are my favorite!

Peach Boy is generally a pretty decent show, that is just absolutely destroyed by the fact that the episodes are aired out of order.

Konosuba: FD is actually so fun. My favorite part of the game is that it's actually designed so that you can use Megumin, full fainting drawback and all, and still be able to 3* everything.

I like drugstore Isekai. It's the anime of the season that I watch for comfort, just turn my brain off and enjoy. It's cutesy, silly and makes me laugh sometimes. The gags Geoff mentioned really are completely unoriginal and not funny, but that's not what makes me laugh. I love seeing all the newest hot trash but I would LOVE to see you go back and tackle last season's worst hits as well, ESPECIALLY Fairy Ranmaru. Look, I was excited when it first came out, I'll watch anything with fairies in it. But I need SOMEONE to talk to about how hilariously bad it is, how one-note every episode plot is and how all the magical boy designs look like they're from totally different anime. That's pretty much how I've heard it. The main character is basically "Protagonist-kun" in "Generic World". Not good, not bad. Just "meh".

I don't know. Spirit chronicles is very cliche but there is a weird amount of detail and mystery put into everything that I am still engaged with the story.

11:30 so, you can probably guess that Sentai and Kamen rider doesn’t really do this. Usually if the monster of the week represents anything, it’s for some rando side character without that much depth. That being said, there have been some fantastic use of past trauma through monster fights. One of the best examples being Ahim avenging her family in Gokaiger. The monster himself, who looks like if a buzzwole was also a millennium item, isn’t really intimidating or represents a major issue. It’s ahims emotions and the importance of her role in the team that makes the fight work so well.
Another big one that comes to mind is a certain fight near the end of Kamen Rider Gaim, but it’s such a huge story turn I’m not gonna spoil it. Go watch Gaim.

@@Nshadowtail Uh... I actually liked In/Spectre. The climax was a bit wack but entertaining enough and Kotoko was character that carried the show lol. The other characters were good too. Detective is already dead is like.... uh... Bad Mystery meets Metal Gear Solid meets Resident evil meets Waifu wars meets the bad writers of all of them. It is so bad its good, especially when it "tries".

10:00 i might have gotten that wrong, but just to throw in what "traumerei" aka "Träumerei" is usually used for would be something like "a little, good-feeling dream, maybe a daydream you like to escape into every now and then. Or maybe a possible relationship with a crush you dream about." and so on. Persona4 even had a song called that. And it really felt like an evening semi-dream you make up while watching the stars
