  • Hey all! Hope you all are safe and healthy and if you have the privilege, you are staying home during this time. I know that senior year for high school students have been particularly rough. With college acceptances coming out, I also know that lots of rejections are coming out too. I was rejected from all my dream schools and dealt with a lot of self-worth, anxiety, and self-esteem issues.
    Mental Health resources: www.nimh.nih.g...
I want you to know that you are not alone. Please take care of yourself and your mental health. In this video, I go through a candid recap of how I went through the rejections in my life and why it made me stronger. And, I promise that every rejection lead to something even better. Rejection empower us to try again, do better, or get something different. I am living proof that even after getting rejected time after time, everything worked out and I am working at my dream company this summer as an intern!

Happy Friday! I hope this video gave you some honest, candid insight into what went through my head during college rejections. Although at the time I was extremely spoiled and bratty about going to UC Berkeley, I now know how lucky and fortunate I am to be going to a great school. I just wanted bring you guys into my headspace as a high school senior. You are not alone and you will get through this! I've linked mental health resources above as well -- take care of yourself. Feel free to share your stories of rejection below; I would love to make the comment section below a safe space for honest and raw experiences.

I spend two years battling for my life as an IB student going through a pandemic, poor living conditions and a depression that got me into suicidal thought. Even with that, I found and achieved poorly in my final results (still wonder where the heck God was at that time). Now I got rejected from UC Berkeley, which has always been my dream university since I was a kid - got rejected from my dream major (the one I thought was the best for me). I can't help but feel so stupid and unworthy. My friends are going to their dream universities and even getting offers in all the universities I got rejected from. I am a Christian but after those two miserable and painful years, I lost hope and I don't think there is a God above but if He is there, He might have given up on me. The pain has lasted for so long.
Anyways, I hope you're enjoying your Eecs classes, that's what I was panning to take at UC Berkeley. 😊☺️

@@brilliantstarssMy Love, keep your heart strong. Rejection is protection, things like these happen. Getting rejected from a college does not diminish what you have the potential to be/capable of doing. Especially with your situation, you will be successful in whatever you want to do no matter what, rejection shouldn’t stop you from becoming who/what you want to be. God is there, but there are some things that he can’t be held for, like this hear. I got rejected from a safety college, but it was probably for the best. At the end of the day, where you need to be, you will end up in. Don’t let that break you down, pick yourself back up again and keep trying !!!

I am so grateful that you made this video. I was just rejected from UCB yesterday, and the feelings you describe were the EXACT same as my feelings yesterday. Hearing you be so candid about entitlement really helps me to process the situation- I didn't even want to go to Berkeley, but it stung that people I felt more qualified than were accepted into more selective schools.I don't like feeling that way, I would much rather be overjoyed for the successes of my peers. I despise that this is the culture for so many students like me, but I have the power to try and change that, even if for only a few people. This video inspired me to want to display this rejection (and others) openly instead of hide it away (and continue the shame that surrounds college rejections). Thank you so much!

It’s super easy to fall into the comparing apples to bananas, but I hope you can be better than me and stray from that toxic mentality. Yes! I felt the same way up until the end of my sophomore year, now I'm really really happy. Same as you--I have SOOO many friends, a HUGE alumni network around the world, and my family is always 30 min to 3 hours away at any time. I also feel you on rejections once you get to college, rejected to a major service group recently, but I'm trying again in August (even though I know I'll be just as fine if I don't get in). I applied to about 15 schools, with 10 of them being reaches. I was denied from every place including UCLA, USC, NYU, Penn, Cornell, CMU, and everyone. I was waitlisted from Boston U and Northeastern but probably wont be accepted (but hoping that maybe yield rates will be lower this year). That's to say, everything happens for a reason! It's all about making the best of where you are. It is absolutely INSANE how relatable your discussion of limited resources is. My first semester as a transfer was a total wake-up call. Everyday is not Cal day and it feels like there's a whole dimension of Berkeley experience that isn't accessed if you're not in greek life or a well-connected club. I've been rejected from the two clubs that I applied to and while I maybe should have been more adamant about making it into another club, the experience has overall motivated me to seek marketable skills on my own, advocate for my own needs, and seek connections on my own with less hesitation.
Thanks for making this video! Everyone experiences rejection yet I'm not surprised that people don't talk about it more, it can be very raw and personal

My advice, if you are transferring from CC I would recommend that you get used to making friends in every space that you're in. Join a club at CC! Talk to your classmates! Make study groups! I got way too comfortable being a commuter and only focusing on my studies.
And when you get to Cal join a club asap haha, you're bound to meet people you vibe with

Comparing yourself is hard to deal with and I can relate with u! I’m currently a freshman trying to graduate in 3 years and I can tell u it’s hard to get away from the habit of comparing yourself to others or even yourself from the past. I did in my opinion very good (straight a’s) and now I’m here in high school with 1 b but I realized that it’s in a higher class (honors). English has never been a strong suit for me but I decided to take the class to challenge myself and in middle school I didn’t practice failure and how to deal with it. I’m learning that all now and will be better for me to handle and control myself in college! I learned (self explanatory) you can’t do anything to change that past and all you can do is do your best present and prepare yourself to do your best in the future! I’m still dealing with it bc it was one of my bad habits in middle school but I’m glad to deal and face it now than later on in college! I love your video, thank you for everything!

Truly one of the best videos on this kind of topics! I was myopically focused on getting into Cornell University during the admissions process, that I didn't account for the possibility of rejection. After being deffered in the early rounds and just this week rejected, it was a huge eye opener. I too went through the same waves, the jealous phase really hit me the hardest though. However, in the scope of everything I really think it just wasn't where I was supposed to end up; now im just about to commit to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with one of my best friends who just like me was rejected from his top choice. I am super excited to start this new chapter of my life, and as cliche as it might seem I think getting rejected from my top choice was the best thing that could have happened to me. I’m also a type 3! I applied to 14 schools scattered across the east coast (several ivies). I was set on the idea of getting far far away from my home state Idaho. All but 5 of my schools rejected me. Of my 5 options, 4 are state schools and the “best” is a private school- USC! I applied to USC knowing nothing about it and never having been to Cali. I really loved this. Received a lot of rejections yesterday, in the past month, and in the past year. 😅 It really hurts and really made me challenge my self-worth, and it really made me feel like the past years of work and hardship were for nothing. But like you were saying, it’s not rejection it’s redirection. This has really helped me see and remember that everything happens for a reason and one decisions to reject me (or lots of decisions...) doesn’t mean I’ll never be happy or never get my dream job or that I am in anyway less worthy of success than those who got into a bunch of prestigious school - and enjoy flaunting it 🙃 (peep my bitterness). I feel so much better after hearing this. I’m only a freshman, I have a lot of time for things but knowing that high school goes by really fast I get extremely stressed and nervous thinking about college and acceptance. I have a huge goal in my life that I want to accomplish but when I think about my capabilities I stop. I’m so unmotivated to study and I have no clue how people study for hours. I wish I was like that and I’m working on it but I just really want to be successful and get accepted into college/uni.

not really a rejection but coming from a third world country, I've always wanted to study abroad in the west coast (UCB, UCLA, Caltech, Stanford). However, I never got the chance to apply due to financial capabilities. It has been a year, and I still feel kinda insecure seeing acceptance letters from those with the privilege because I saw my case as a missed opportunity.
This video helped me a lot. I'm starting to feel better and thankful for what I have despite how messed up and poorly managed my local university is with the overall education system here lol. Thank you so much!

So many other students who applied had better grades than I did, participated in multiple extracurricular activities, and had more well-rounded essays and interviews, yet I was the one who got in. I have been feeling almost all of the stages you felt when you were rejected from your dream schools, but your video definitely brought perspective into self-worth and value back into my life, so thank you! I was known as the “nerd” in school who did calculus in 8th grade and always wanted to be the top student in all of my classes. I had no friends and I always focused on getting high grades. I skipped a grade (junior year) after taking 6 community college courses, so that I could graduate high school in 3 years. I decided to apply to 13 schools, and to my surprise, I was only accepted to 4. I got rejected from my dream school (Cornell), UCLA, UC Berkeley, etc. It was extremely difficult being rejected because I’ve worked so hard. But I realized that maybe it was for the best. It was mentally difficult to ALWAYS be the best in school, and if I got accepted to Cornell, I know I’d be competing with people like me. I don’t want that for my mental health. I want to have fun in college, and I feel like I deserve it after working so hard in high school. I’ve committed to UCSD at 16 years old and I feel like it’s the right fit for me. Rejection = redirection

Taking Calc at 12 years old? I don’t know who you are but I don’t think the UC’s and Ivy leagues are ready for you! I mean that in the best way possible, you are doing great things and getting accepted into college at 16 is a major WIN. I’m 18 and I got rejected from all the schools I applied to and I was bitter seeing all my classmates who I know didn’t learn much from the time we were at school but I can’t say shit because as studious as I was I let myself fall back a bit and my grades dropped. Anyways, I am more humble and have a new outlook on life. I’m not done giving up yet and there is always the appeal process and next semester to apply!

TBH, after being rejected by unis, the fact you got into UC Berkeley crushed me real hard. I am not trying to be bitter, well maybe I am, please forgive me. The rejections hit me really hard and I still can't get over it until now(mid-summer), I suppose it is because I didn't have a choice(I am asian and where I am from have another way for applying to uni), I only got two path, either I can go out (us in this case) or I have to stay in local unis. I had put so much afford in applying to unis in us cuz I thought it was my only chance to be somone special, I was having such a harder time compared with my friend because the idea applying to unis outside of my country wasn't supported by my high school, so I had to do everything myself, everthing. There isn't any counselor in my school, and the only thing I could go was to ask a few of the supportive teachers to help. I tried so hard just to be the one who is a bit more special (where I am from is very competitve), so when I knew I got rejected by all 8 unis I applied to, I didn't know what to do or how to react, well I still don't know now. If anyone is actually reading this, please don't get me wrong. I love what she said in the video and her opinions, I didn't type all of these wanting to attack her. It's just that when I saw she got into UC Berkeley (which is one of the school I want to go), I thought maybe rejections from unis simply means different for different people. Knowing that she is still in a brand school, I don't know if it is actually okay to be rejected. Am I losing a key to another life? Is it still possible to become who I want to? Can I ever stand on places where I want to be? I am still defeated, I actually don't know what to do.

I might have to do a gap year, or do one semester at my community college again but to take organic chemistry to get a taste of it. Idk what I’m gonna do, but I’m hopeful. In high school it didn’t work out, but then I got 2 years paid for with books included via a scholarship at a community. I would suggest to be hopeful y’all because things happen for a reason.

That is real talk, and it is NOT an age thing. I'm a returning later in life student and I have been going all out balls to the wall with my sights firmly set on transferring to Berkeley HAAS. I went to workshops, starting point mentorship, experience Berkeley, TAP, and did my best to put my self in front of the face of those who were making the decisions. I took almost everything else for granted. I ended up making it into HAAS (not my point), but even then when I got rejected from UCLA I was still salty. Especially when I hopped onto some of the chats where people were saying whether they got in or not. I had zero desire to even go to UCLA and as someone who was born and raised in Boston I have no love for LA in general, but still.... it stung. It's not easy, but you have to remember that it is not personal those people don't know you. All they know is what you tell them, and that is only a sliver of who you really are. You have to remember that. Everything happens for a reason, and you will end up going where you are meant to go. Even if it isn't where you thought you were meant to go.

Thanks for the video. I was one in five kids at my school who took IB so I felt like I would atleast get UCLA,USC, UCB. But ofc that didn't happen. One of my worst regrets was that if I didn't take IB I would probably have gotten better grades and possibly gotten into something better, heck even if not I would've atleast end up where I did right now. But I think I should be grateful for what I have. So far I got Pepperdine, UCI and don't get me wrong, they are pretty good I mostly feel like I would've atleast gotten into the same schools under easier HS circumstances without IB. And some of my peers in IB had it even worst. But I digress. At the end of the day it doesn't matter where we go because we can still achieve our dream job and it's all for the better.

I know it’s easy to have regrets, but what helped me was remembering that I did IB because I loved learning and holistic thinking and doing it for the process. You can’t be mad at your past self. It’s not fair! Congrats on Pepperdine and UCI - both BEAUTIFUL and amazing schools ! Both are by the water too! Yup! Everyone can get to anywhere they need to be regardless of school!

Your doing great and thanks for sharing . Berkeley is and will always be top school for many smart kids. CMC like many elite private schools recruit certain minority. Keep your wits and heads up.. Also political science degree and like from Ivy is useless.

So I appreciate your experience I would have just loved for you to reflect on how UC Berkeley is one of the best schools in the nation not just a random low-performing school. It just seemed a little “bratty” to say you had to settle for Berkeley like it was an online school in Barbados or something. I’m really happy for all your success I just wanted to let you know that’s how it came across when I saw your video.

Yea like I said in the video I was extremely bratty in the moment and lusted after private ivy leagues. I just wanted to walk you guys through my honest thought process during the time. Now looking back In hindsight and like I said, I’m so forever grateful and lucky and truly blessed to go to UC Berkeley. I was extremely entitled and ungrateful as a high school student and so for that, I know I could have done better.
