Thank you for this video! I didn’t know what to do with the extra stalk between growth nodes so it was a relief to see you cut & keep only the right bits. Good video, thank you
If I were you I think I would use a jar with a larger opening to make removing the rooted stems easier without the chance of ripping them off. I drive my sister crazy at times taking old jars that at one time contained food and washing them really well to use just for this purpose. I have done this on several occasions and it does take patience but is well worth it to make beautiful, full and bushy pothos plants! Thank you so much for your short and concise video, well done!
It’s the middle of winter and I’m so glad you addressed that you were doing this in the middle of winter too! The whole video I was worried it wouldn’t matter anyways but yay I’m so happy that I can do this 😅
I was looking for a video on how to propagate Pothos into water and was really happy to find your video because most videos get so long & drawn out then eventually will show you how to do it. so I’m glad that you went straight into it , The visuals were very clear on what you were doing and your explanations were easy to understand ..
Thank you Rachel as someone with a black thumb and north facing windows I can use the advice! Good video: short, simple and to the point. You have a very pleasant voice as well which never hurts. Many thanks.
Such a well made tutorial thank you! My wife and I separated recently and I was given one of her pothos and I was worried about ruining it trying to propagate it and now I feel much better lol
This was very helpful and exactly what I needed. My issue was where exactly to cut (I originally cut off a leaf and tried to propagate that-I'm sure you can imagine how that turned out 😔) so I wanted exact instructions this time. Thank you! New subbie 😊
This was super helpful! I took a couple of cuttings from my stepmom's pothos recently and I've been worried since its been a almost a week or so. Good to know that it can take them a bit longer to start growing roots especially in winter 👍
Thank you so much! all the other videos about propagating pathos were super sped up and it was stressful lol so thanks for slowing it down and showing its progress
You do have to change out the water regularly or it will turn a yellowish color and your cutting will get mushy and die. I changed my water every 3-4 days
Thanks for making this video! Love how short it is :) Just wondering-did you have trouble getting the cuttings out of the jar? It has a pretty small opening
Thank you for a great video! Tonight I did this to about 8 leaves from the Mother plant. This plant was recently transplanted (3-4 months ago) because it was root bound in its pot. The past two months it hasn't been looking too great. My Father removed some of the root system, and planted it in potting soil. So I'm not sure why suddenly it's not doing well. A shock to the plant perhaps? Maybe he gave it too much water when he transplanted it? So I'm hoping that these leaves take, and start rooting for me. This was my Mother's plant that she had for many years - I think it misses her, and her green thumb 😔
Oh I hope it takes root too! I'm sorry for your loss and think it's really sweet you take care of her plant to remember her by. And I don't know how big the pot is that you and your dad repotted it in, but it's best to increase the pot size by a half inch or inch in diameter. Just so there's not a lot of empty wet soil with no roots in it to soak it up. :) I hope that helps!
@@tenneyplants Thank you for your quick reply! So maybe it didn't like losing some of it's roots and being placed back in the same size hanging basket (maybe 10" top dia.) with mostly soil. I'm thinking that maybe he took out half or more of it's roots. What might be the next best thing to do for the Mother plant? Thank you again!
Hm, I would recommend trimming the mother plant back. Doing so will allow the smaller root system not be so overwhelmed trying to support so many leaves. And you could propagate the trimmings too if you wanted to!
thank you so much for this!! the top of my pothos plant is suffering becuz of root rot (i accidentally overwatered her when i first got her ... oops) and all of her bottom leaves are growing beautifully
I have some as a gift from months ago an they are growing like crazy in my water propagation! Can I leave them in water? Like forever? I’m in love with it. The roots are literally probably 7 inches long at this point an they have multiple new leafs
That’s awesome!! Yeah you can leave them in there indefinitely! Just make sure to change the water regularly and use hydroponic fertilizer when needed. But they’ll do great growing in water!
if you don't want to change the water regularly, you can add it on top of your aquarium if you have fish as long as it's "moving" water through filter or sump, your pothos is will surely thrive.
Yes, great question! If the water ever becomes cloudy, miscolored, or simply gets low, it’s a good idea to dump the old water and get some fresh water for it.
Thank you for this 😊 Such a helpful video. I just placed some trimmings from my pothos in a jar with water and started the process however the ends got really brown and wasn't growing any roots. Suggestions?
I’d try snipping off the brown ends (without taking off any nodes) and be diligent about changing the water. That should keep the ends from turning brown again. Hope that helps!
a lot of mine r on the windowsill of a north facing window and the east wall of a room with a large south facing window also a tip ive done with mine is to NOT change the water pothos plants have a root hormone that they give off and helps it to grow roots the only time i’ve changed mine is if it has a suspicious mold not alge thats normal but like actual mold or if it starts to smell bad if ur gonna move the water plants into soil make sure u fill a nursery pot with dirt and plant it then put it in a bowl and fill the bowl with water to help it settle and keep the water highly watered for a while
I'm not sure where to place mine. I had a very long vine. Placed it in a clear glass bottle but the leaves started curling and no roots. Maybe it was too shaded? Help
Thank you for this video - so helpful and definitely subscribing. I'll be trying this with my pothos which is really long now but doesn't seem to have bits I can easily cut with a node and then a bit of stem each side without cutting a lot of the plant off?!
Thank you! I loved them in their little bottles too! And yes, pothos will actually do quite well in water for years. Just be sure to change their water regularly and give them hydroponic fertilizer every now and then so they can get the nutrients they need :)
Quick question! Do you change out the water completely from time to time or just replenish with additional water in the container as needed? Thanks for this succinct video, as everyone else has said it's annoying to see a 20+ min video for something so simple!
Perfect video!! New subscriber here 🎉 I recently bought a pothos propagation and it's water is somewhat yellow... should I change the water right away?
Thanks so much for subscribing! And great question! I would definitely change the water anytime you notice discoloration or cloudiness. I hope it goes well!
Great question! I've tried both letting them sit and callus and also just sticking them right into water and haven't seen much of a difference either way. Some plants like certain cacti or euphorbia species definitely benefit from sitting out to callus but pothos plants aren't too picky!
Don't make that mistake.... Like I did lol I had to take a hammer to my little glass jars. Literally couldn't pull out the new roots. I used something with a larger mouth and some tape to snug the cutting
Thanks for making this video, short, simple and concise. Other videos take 20 minutes to explain this and it drives me nuts
Haha, same!! There’s no need to drag on and on. Thanks for your sweet comment!

Question: you mentioned to change the water regularly. Once you make the cut and put it in the jar of water, how often do you change the water?

Just whenever the water looks dirty or cloudy. Maybe every week or so but doesn’t hurt to change it more often :)
