How to Propagate a Monstera | The RIGHT Way to Cut Your Monstera Leaves and Grow Roots in Water

  • Propagating is the best way to make more plants out of the plants you already have! Monstera Deliciosas are one of my favorite easy plants to propagate -- its super simple and the result is AMAZING.
Here are my tops on how to propagate, including where to cut your Monstera to create cuttings that you'll root in water, and some tricks to make sure it grows roots. The goal here is to grow roots, so you can plant it in soil after 2-3 months.
And check out my Amazon Store for more on the products I used in this video: www.amazon.com/shop/thejungle...
Comment below and let me know what you think! Are there other ways you've had luck propagating your Monstera?

My monstera is 43 years old (mum was given it as a present when I was born) I now have to look after it and this is the first time I’m trying to do something with it. Your video has been great as this plant dying terrifies me. So thank you so much.

    • @musahenderson
      @musahenderson 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@shoshoiLLindividual it was about 5 foot tall but not very bushy. The main root died and it was just living in the air. Now the two main cutting are about 2 1/2 feet each. Hopefully new roots will appear soon.

I've been nervous about propagating my monstera for the first time, and all the sites I've browsed just give waaay too much infomation and has made me overthink the whole thing. If anyone wants to buy that super thrive stuff I recommend buying it from an actual store and not from Amazon. Amazon sold me some that wasn't completely sealed (they tried to reseal it) and they diluted it with nasty water. I didn't know it at the time because it was my first time using it. But I used it on 4 different plants and all 4 got moldy soil and killed all of the plants. I've since bought it from home depot and the color is darker, Amazon one was almost clear. The new one I have works great though!

I NEEEEEEDED THIS VIDEO! I inherited a 15+ YEAR OLD MONSTERA from the people that lived in my home before me! (It may very well be older) It was TOO BIG to move w them. It has aerial roots that have literally become a carpet of vines on my terrarium/plant room. They’re not quite long or strong enough for Tarzan to travel on, but a toddler Tarzan could swing safely! 😂 I can’t even count the amount of them. (It would take a minute)
No. I do t live in a jungle... really. It’s a unique home. It has a plant nursery, right off the living room. South facing ground to ceiling windows. (It does burn the leaves, i have to move the stems as needed) The floor is sunk in and filled with RIVER ROCK...literally the builder dumped a truck load of river rock in the sink in plant room. I could probably plant anything directly into my floor.
I didn’t even know what plant it was until I watched your video. My friends have told me it was an elephant ear plant?? I also didn’t know what the aerial roots were. Believe it or not I’m a zoologist. Had to study ecology, just never had enough time to master botany. I’m getting good at it because of people like you! THANK YOU!! Still, i was so overwhelmed at one point, I was honestly going to cut off all the aerial roots because they’re all over the place and take up so much space. 🤔 Hmmm no.
I live in the desert southwest of New Mexico, so I imagine the aerial roots absorb any moisture from the air or from the ground, I don’t know. I’m thankful I didn’t cut them off.
Now, because of you, I’m trying to figure out how many plants to make out of this one giant plant. Rather than split it in half somehow. Much easier.
I’m going to have to watch your video several times to find the brown nodes and understand what you mean with the aerial roots. As I said I literally have dozens of the aerial roots. Anyway thank you so much for this video I needed it so bad.
Forgive me for this being so long. If you have any additional advice that you could give me based on the fact that my plant is so massive has so many roots and is so old.
I just subbed. I’m going to start binge watching now. In addition to the Monstera, I also inherited a 15+ yr old RUBBER PLANT, JADE, and ALOE. Plus a 7 yr old mistletoe cactus. I’ve propagated at least 75, 1 ft tall jade plants, just using what I found hiding for me under the GIANT 10 yr old canopy. I’ve not touched the Rubber Tree, because it’s a tree, but it’s 8-9 ft tall. (My home has cathedral height ceilings) It’s supported by ropes tied on my beams. It’s un movable, but in a giant pot and needs help. It burns against the south windows! I hope you have more vids! 😂

I’m quite nervous about it, my Daughter is 29 now and she can remember me Always having my plant, so I really hope I can give her a nice Baby version for her and her partners new house 🏡 First house! my plant's stem got a bit damaged from overturning onto the floor. I have taken a few cuttings, should I just cut that one down as the stem is not thick enough to hold the weight of the leaves, and I'm worried where there is a split in the stem that it might die off, I put a plaster on it, it was the only thing I could think of but I think it is still leaking sap and there are one or two more leaves with nodes. Thank you for this video!

My parents have a huge monstera plant but it's kind of like a large and contorted tree trunk and starts showing leaves after like 1m 😅 it doesn't look too happy so I've been wanting to propagate some of it, but I was wondering if I could plant the cuttings directly in soil instead of letting them root in water?

Thank you for such detailed video! I still have a few questions.
    1. Do we have the change the water once we put in the jar? If so, how often?
    2. Are those (old)leaves in the soil going to sprout new leaves anymore?

      1. not necessary, refill to compensate for evaporation
      2. yes

Is it ok to use a airstone while propagating? And keeping it submerged in water doesn't cause rot?

Does it make a difference to cut at a slant under the node?

Will the original stem that was cut continue to have new growth?

Do I need to put anything on the exposed/open vine of the mother plant so it doesn’t rot at the end?

At 5:20 could you have cut at the very bottom of that stem or is where you cut the best spot to do it? Will that part of the original plant regrow there?
    P.S.
This video was veey helpful, thank you :)
