  • Today on what it’s like 1936 Mercedes-Benz W143 I mean 230, this is when Mercedes-Benz made quality cars. This is a lower on the totem pole Mercedes-Benz and it just screams quality everywhere you look no black plastic no plastic covers covering anything everything is real and this is a quality built car.
This absolutely stunning example of a 1936 Mercedes-Benz 230 is currently for sale at auto mall Morgantown Pennsylvania, where they have this fine example of an automobile for sale as well as 895 other cars currently listed when recording this episode. four hours of operation directions to classic auto Mall as well as to get more information and pictures of this very car. It's a shame that the 70's Mercedes you drove was trashed. I worked as a mechanic from '79 to '88, specializing in wheel and chassis alignment. During that time, I drove thousands of different cars, foreign and domestic. Rolls Royce, Maserati, Porsche, Jaguar, Ferrari, Volvo, Saab, Volkswagen, Diamler, Fiat, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, BMW, Mercedes, even a Tatra. You name it, I serviced and drove it. Of all those cars, my favorite was the '70 to '78 Mercedes 450 SEL. Not the fastest, but not at all slow. Comfortable, with that same kind leather-and-horsehair smell, and supremely confidence inspiring on any road. Taut suspension, but not harsh or noisy. Even the '79 to '88 SEL's had the same road manners and earthy aromas, but they were mostly Diesels (I despise diesel engines in cars). A close second were the smaller SE sedans, tied with the SL roadsters. Also super easy to service, although they rarely needed anything but oil and filter changes, tires, or brake pads and rotors resurfacing/replacement. 300,000 miles was not uncommon, they'd just keep going and going and going... you get the idea. I hope you get the chance drive another one that is mechanically sound, I think you'll really dig it, like I really dig your TH-cam channel. I watch and enjoy every episode. Stay safe, keep on finding these amazing cars for us. Happy Trails! 😁❤

I'm not a big M-B fan, either. As a kid in the 50s and 60s, I thought they were stodgy, boring cars, and no way did they convey luxury. Except for the 300SL. I used to see 190SL's but didn't realize how underpowered they were. I remember when Car and Driver tested M-B 600 vs Rolls vs Caddy, Lincoln and Imperial in '65. They liked the 600, but I didn't realize the true technical wizardry and power those cars had. The car you looked at here really was far more modern that most American cars of the time, but nowadays, the Germans seem to be playing the "how many more computers can we use to control things" game, and their cars are way overpriced for what you get. WYR=Packard and the Model T sitting behind the M-B.

Don’t get me wrong they made some good cars but they haven’t really made anything great since the 50s.. they in my opinion are right up there with BMW, Land Rover of making overhyped overrated overpriced piles but that’s just my opinion.. the classic stuff though, is really nice for this car being just a couple steps out of the basement value for money I don’t think you could beat it.. real leather.. but with that said, there is a stigmatism about this car that a lot of people just won’t be able to get past 1936 Germany..

I know that those ones will last forever. I still can’t wrap my mind around the price, 1978, 300 D cost over $20,000 you could get a mark five diamond Jubilee fully loaded and have enough money left over to buy garage to park it in.. maybe not quite that much but you could buy a pretty fully loaded out town car for the price I haven’t been in one of those Mercedes but I have gotten to drive a 450 SL and it was a total letdown.. I’m not facing one off of that car. My mom owns a Mercedes and I don’t get it. She replaced her Cadillac Escalade with a Mercedes and it’s so small.

I think you find lots of American reasons for your comments.. what do I mean by that?.. well the import tarrifs on imported vehicles made them much more expensive to buy in the US. Plus Mercedes had to provide specific detuned US market models to meet US emissions.
There are lots of Mercedes models that I wouldn't want to own.. but yet all Mercedes models up to the late 90s were engineering masterpieces and are in a different league to any of the US brands. Quality of materials used, engineering, quality control, engineering design, engineering tolerance es are just way ahead of any of the US manufacturers.

I agree with you. I'm too not much of a Mercedes fan. When Mercedes had purely mechanical engines such as the diesel engined 240 D in the 1970s, I confess that I lusted after them, wanting a simple reliable 240 D model with a four speed manual transmission. They were well made and parts for them were not as obscene priced. Today, however, Mercedes with its over-engineering of electronics, use of plastics for engine. parts, and excessive luxury content; has totally destroyed the brand and made a mockery of German engineering.

No, that was an entry-level Packard that packard only cost $700 when it was new it was only a couple hundred dollars more than a Chevy or a Ford the prestigious Packard buyer hated the 115 C series as well as the 120 series which didn’t cost a whole lot more junior series Packard was crazy. Those cars have gotten pretty expensive because one could use it still as an every day car they get around 20 miles to the gallon more with overdrive horsepower. You can always change out the rear end and get better gas mileage and better speed.… I really want to buy a 30s car. I’m between three if I could get one of these for the same price 1935 hupmobile or 1937 packard I would take either or 115 see I would much rather have in rumble seat, coupe flavor or two-door sedan not opposed to the four-door sedan either would not be opposed to 120 trim because as weird as it sounds, you could buy a 120 cheaper than you can find a 115 C for generally I really like the 1937 Chrysler airflow as if those were all the same price. I would have a really hard time picking. The hupmobile sounds like nothing else… the air flow looks like nothing else… and the packard has the balance like noting else

The 1936 Ford Tudor behind the Pontiac is a lot more modern design, as well as faster, more than likely. The gauge at the right of the speedo has the fuel gauge at the top and the oil pressure at the bottom. I would guess that the left plastic lever might be for the lights? The pull out thing is probably the choke. Anyway WYR#1 Packard! Even though it is also a six, has to be faster than the Merc. Almost exactly. In Hogan's Heroes, Klink had a 1938 model 230.

    Packard, LaSalle, then the Merc

I would take the Packard 115 over the Mercedes any day, more comfortable, reliable and powerful with equal or better economy. The 115 was a great car just not exclusive enough to please traditional Packard owners. The biggest way to compare a Mercedes is to drive a 1986 E300 vs a Cadillac Sedan Deville or Chrysler NewYorker Fifth Ave of the era. The Mercedes in that era felt like they were carved out of a single block of steel. The others felt like flexible flyers in comparison. I know, have driven all three I listed. However, today all cars feel solid like the Mercedes there is not any difference in anything other than Brand Marketing and Price.

Hey..uhh..Mercedes will support any vehicle made by Mercedes with new factory parts. This means parts are easy to acquire, just VERY expensive.

Nice car, but I was struck by the lack of amenities compared to its American contemporaries, like armrests, ashtrays/lighters. Also, considerably underpowered vs. American contemporaries. And the driver's footwell was tiny which I'd find real annoying after driving more than 30 minutes on the highway. So regarding "Would you rather", I'd take any of the American cars over the Benz. They all had better styling IMO, probably more power, and are better appointed.
Question though: It looks like the German staff car you always see in WWII movies (and Hogan's Heroes). Was it used for this purpose?

by 1936 the Nazi were in full brutal motion. I ,personally , wouldn't take the car even if it was free. It has a sinister vibe.Thx Jay.

I was going to say something to that effect, while I was behind the wheel of it. It’s such an awesome over the hood view but I was getting those vibes. I don’t know if I could own a Mercedes from this era with its history…
Great choices the Packard has a way nicer, more inviting interior in my opinion even though the leather seats were way nicer than the Packard seats. The Packard doesn’t have evil surrounding it. They built the Merlin engine during World War II to help defeat. Germany during the war

I'd posit that the Nazis became as brutal as they did because the Versailles victors of WW1 didn't have the skills to keep engaged with Germans on a one-to-one basis so they could understand and engage with the mission of the League of Nations.
