You know what I love about your channel? You look at these cars like I do as rolling pieces of ART. You love to see the difference between cars. That’s aftermarket A/C maybe installed at the dealership

They were moving art every make reflected what you,were as a person or status level. Yes it’s like that now but everything looks the same and plastic fantastic (but is safer) but doesn’t have the quality feel of these cars
I didn’t the rambler same day I did this car (I did two other cars this day as well coming soon) but the rambler was built just as nice as the Lincoln.. and that’s saying something
The factory AC on these was still trunk mounted with clear tubes taking air to roof vents and little air scoops on the rear fenders (so you can tell if they had AC from the outside). Continental too but no plastic tubes and the scoop was built into the rear fender bump up.

One of my all time favorite cars. 1956 was a good year for the automobile industry as most of the cars made that year had beautiful styling.
Yes, 56 had their gorgeous Chrysler and DeSoto models, Ford had the 2-door Crown Vic with the chrome basket handle, AMC carried forward those cute Metropolitans, Packard with their snazzy Clipper rear end architecture and Studebaker's Golden Hawks.
56 was a great year across the board
MY Uncle had one of these when I was a little boy in the early 60's

I was 13 in late 1955. I saw a new 56 Lincoln and told my Dad that I would someday own one. I started saving my money and at 16 became the second owner of a coral colored 56 convertible. The first owner was a Pittsburgh Steeler named Lynn Chandnois. Loved that car for many years and wish I still had it. It had all options including power operated vent windows and automatic lubrication.

Totally agree it’s one of my favorite 50s cars especially from Lincoln. It might be my favorite 50s Lincoln.
Our neighbors across the alley had a creme-colored '57 with light blue interior, factory AC and a Continental Kit. It was so long that they couldn't close the garage door. I got to wash it from time to time and marveled at the features. I am a snob, of course, when it comes to the Continental Mark II, but I guess that it was too rich for their downtown Los Angeles Fountain Pen Shop (really).
Yeah the mark ii was equivalent to $105,000 which is insane and I think for that price it was a bit overrated still a great car just a little reserved for that price point in my opinion

I own a 56 Premiere coupe and bought it off the original owner in 2000. Its the original Taos Turquoise and a black roof. It has the factory AC and fog lights. I get so many compliments on it. Just put disc brakes on the front and she stops like a new BMW. Thanks for the video!

Another classic car from the 50s Jay!! The rear end i really like!! 1956 was the year of the PROMINENT hooded headlamps. I think the 3 best examples of this are the Lincoln, the Mercury & the Packard - with the Packard being the most beautiful.

Another thorough and professional post, as always. One of the most beautiful American designs of the 50's. Recall being inside one just once and recall factory air CHROMED ceiling outlets, two front/two rear. when I working in a local gas station's service bays as a teen...a 4 door black '56 Capri that our town's funeral home had used as a family car and the morticians didn't have the heart to trade it off. Same ceiling outlets as in the Continental Mark II, which ducted cold air from the trunk mounted a.c. generator though those thick C pillars instead of using transparent tubes.

I love the 56 Lincoln and it's evolutionary changes in 57 (wild wide find that year). I think the 56 manages to be quite clean for a mid 50s design, and along with the 55 Plymouth, I think are great transitional examples of the switch between the more dowdy (but handsome) cars of the early 50s, and the progressively wild and crazy high-style models of the late 50s.
I would love to compare 56 Plymouth to the Lincoln that would be super cool but don’t think that will happen this season is almost over bummer but still going to be making great content ether way.. I drove a 2000 (not sure if I’m going to do a full blown review of it but ) anyway WS6 it is the best car from 2000s I’ve ever drove clutch is excellent gear box is perfect shifts so smooth and your not hunting for gears too many new cars (2016 challenger) that’s what’s it’s like their isn’t where third should be hunting for gears the clutch was good in that car but the gear box was eh
Over 50 years ago...I was land-based, in the Navy in San Diego. I bought (age 22. and stupid about cars!) a 1957Lincoln Premiere, from the original owner..only 32,000 miles on it!...I paid 600 bucks cash!..It was a turquoise color, had the huge fins, and was perfect, inside and out. I loved the car, but did not have much time to enjoy it, so I sold it six months later, for 600 bucks!...the guy I sold it to pulled up to the barracks one day, and gloated over the fact that he was about to sell it--for 1200 bucks!...Live and learn!...anyway, that vehicle was incredibly sumptuous on the inside...I have never seen another luxury car with a nicer interior!
Such a beautiful car and color combination. I prefer the under dash, dealer installed, cowl mounted AC units to the factory trunk mounted units that used clear plastic tube rising from the package shelf, tucked between the roof and headliner and exiting through four vents overhead.
Cadillac used this system too, but some GM divisions used cowl mounted systems like Pontiac.
Owners lost trunk space and the plastic tubes tended to become cloudy over time obstructing rear views. Additionally, some owners complained of cold heads and the inability to adjust the vents to other parts of their bodies. Hats were popular for both sexes so to cool down quickly you had to remove your hat. The design only lasted for '56 and '57 before being incorporated into the dash when installed at the factory.
AC was the most expensive option on American cars during the '50's and early '60's. By the mid 60's the price was lowered. Nash is credited with creating the modern elements and cowl installation which is still commonly used throughout the industry.

That’s unusual for the power windows buttons to not actually be on the doors!
Cadillac did that too on some of their 50's models since the wrap around windshields of the era allowed the designers a place to mount them.

It's an underrated design - pretty much a production concept car.
Beautiful 1956 Lincoln Premier Coupe. A 1956 Industrial Design Award winner. That is one of the reasons why I have mine, in Amythest, with a white roof.
This is one of the most underrated cars of the 50s in my opinion I want to compare it to a Packard Caribbean so bad but finding those two cars in the same spot is a tall order.. I would love to just find a Packard Caribbean to feature this year that’s an underrated car as well.

The Capri, which had been the top trim, was replaced by the Premier in 1956.
The Capri was available as a 2-door hardtop and a 4-door SEDAN.

@@What.its.like. I understand. I was 'coming of age' as regards cars in the 1950's and there isn't much I do NOT know.
The Premier also had a 4-V setup which, when 'floored', the 2nd side of the carburetor kicked in not unlike a lower gear.

I bought one that had been abandoned behind a gas station in 1987. The gas station was being torn down so he sold it to me for $400 as is, it hadn't run in four years.. It was salmon pink and white with a matching interior and a chrome kleenex box inside. It also had the fantastic ceiling A/C vents which were fed by clear plastic tubes that came out of the rear package tray.My friend and I went down with a fresh battery, new plugs and wires and fresh oil. After an hour we fired it up, which it did immediately, but then the water pump disintegrated. A trip down the street to a parts store got us a ford water pump that fit perfectly. After installing it we hosed it off, pumped up the tires and I drove it home at 70 miles an hour. We spent the next two days cleaning and polishing it and then sold it for 2 grand. I often wished I had kept it...

I am 61 years old. I’ve been a real BIG Car Nut since age 2 or younger. In the last few years I just learned the difference in wheel base measurements between the older full sized cars Say a FORD GALAXIE compared to the same year Mercury Monterey. Some full-size sedans compared to their wagons coupes compared to four-door sedans. I used to think the 4 dr versions had more rear leg room but never thought it was because the car was longer. DUH!

On most newer cars the steering wheel is about the diameter of the horn ring on this car.
Steering wheels have gotten so far and small I like a big thin wheel
Beautiful color on that Lincoln. I believe it's Fairmont Blue. You mentioned you thought it was repainted from the original apricot color, but I don't see anything on the 56 Lincoln color charts that resembles an apricot color. But I sure like that color that's on there now. As far as looks, way better styling than it's equivalent year Cadillac.

The reason that this car reminds you of a Packard, is that it was designed by former Packard stylists who were hired by FoMoCo, in the early 50's, specifically to upgrade Lincoln. With the exception of the hood, grille and a few other minor details, the 56 Lincoln was designed at Packard to be the 55 Packard!
It looks more like a Plymouth Savoy than any other car especially in the front.. but the taillights have that look of the cathedral tail lights in the packer design I think Dick Teague that

@@danielulz1640 I had no idea the '56 Lincoln was designed at Packard to BE the '55 Packard. This is indeed amazing. Still, it does stop short of doing that completely, and instead has a strong Packard "flavor" yet retaining the attractive styling ties with the '55 Lincoln.

@@danielulz1640 That makes sense too, of course. The Lincoln was also a longer, sleeker car than the Packard. The final '56 Packard was still a beautiful car though. I think my favorite 50's Packard was the '53 Caribbean convertible which (I'm figuring?) may have been Pac's answer to Cad's El Dorado. Not sure. I can still see the Packard influence on the '57 Lincoln, but not the '58-'60 that I don't care for. Now I'm wondering if Packard designers were involved with the beautiful '55-'57 Mark II? I absolutely see the same taillight influence on the 1961 Lincoln Continental.

Yes, very beautiful cars. I work for an insurance agency and we do Hagerty for our classics. We insure a green 56 four door with factory air that is with it's third owner and he has had about 40 years. Still has the factory paint and it's a very nice survior car and he's been invited to Ford events and he's a retired Lincoln Mechanic.

Re: AC on the Lincoln. I had a wealthy realative who had a new 1953 Buick Roadmaster with the AC (By Fridgedaire) in the trunk, and very similar to the Lincoln set-up. It was damn cold.
I watch leno a lot and he has an Imperial that he claims it gets so cold can hang meat in the car. Just wondered if it was true or an exaggeration.. I’m leaning towards it’s probably true a lot of times the older stuff just works..

Finally becoming a real luxury car, and more than a dressed up Mercury which it had been for years. Dream car design totally messed up in 57 with tacked on fins and mismatched wheel openings. Find it odd people don't compare this to a 56 Nash, both had half hidden front wheels. I'd take a 56 Packard any day. Where are the backup lamps, in the exhaust? Weird. Cheap looking dash.

I had two Lincoln’s one was 88 the other 89 both towncars signature series the 88 was one of the best cars I’ve ever owned the 89 was a pile (don’t get me wrong it was mint cosmetically had 90,000 miles ) problem is the cars with low miles always seem to have the issues because there is nothing worse than leaving a car to sit.. ended up putting two or transmissions in that car the 88 had 125,000 when I bought it at the age of 18 and drove it 100,000 more miles in three years without any major issue I put a steering rack in was the biggest expense

I had a 57 Lincoln. It needed a jump start one day. We threw the hood open and....no battery. After much thrashing about we discovered it is under the front passenger foot well. The 56 is a much cleaner design that the 57. And the 58...Well..It must have been designed by people on magic mushrooms.
And you gotta love those huge 57 Lincoln tail lamps

@@What.its.like. The Detroit guy who was making cars ugly for 1958 was working a several design studios that year. He turned the graceful 57 Cadillac into a fat monster with too much chrome for 58.
@@billolsen4360 I thought those tail lights, and the huge fins, were really cool...but for whatever reason, the 57 Lincolns really tanked in sales numbers,and I guess the 56 models were considered to be the best looking Lincolns of that era...I still prefer my 57...I have not seen even one of those on the road in the Seattle area, in at least 30 years.
My grandfather bought nothing but lincoln and his last lincoln was a 1956 capri. I remember it air conditioning, electric windows and seats. It was top of the line.

The original equipment air conditioning unit was located in the trunk with two clear plastic air tubes that rise up from the package shelf, up into the roof to channel cold air through four vent outlets near the four corners of the roof headliner.
They don't build 'em like they used to!

Most all cars nowadays have power brakes, power windows, power steering, power door locks, etc.
Pretty quickly luxuries become necessities.
One of my car friends had a 58 Lincoln. Never got to drive or ride in it, but it was a boat! He got it from a deceased relative.
I have no idea what Lincoln designers where thinking I’ve never been in one but they have some cool features like the rear window goes down, I think that feature was called the breezeway.. not 100% tho
Honda picked up on 90` degree openings, 1st Gen 2007 Fit through 2022 HR-V, I own(ed) both. That color 2 Tone combinations (ext & int) screams 50s
You are the first TH-cam car guy I’ve seen that knows that the strap on the back of the front seats is a robe cord (for lap robes or blankets). Most think it’s a grab handle.
To be fair I was corrected early on.. I was born way to late I love these classic cars. 9/10 time if it was up to me I’d drive the classics daily just built better way more class and different.. they were rolling art

this is my absolute fave Lincoln, reminds me much of the 55-56 Mercury that I love most, this Lincoln and the 51, then later the Mark lll are my faves. For 57 they kinda ruined the Lincoln for me, added odd double headlights and unneeded fins, the Lincoln Futura was inspiration for the Batmobile, I never had a problem with the wrap around windshield either ;) That looks like aftermarker air, original unit would have been in trunk with air vents on rear fenders to take in air, and also would have clear air tubes coming up from trunk unit behind rear seat on platform.

n the 225 of the merc, lincoln has 280 hp and my 57 Lincoln with 300hp. 56 won styling awards back in 56!
In 2008 my dad bought one for 4000 dollars he shipped it to Europe it was in great condition

@@What.its.like. It was originally in pink but he remade it coral he bought it for my birth but I never really started appreciating it now because before I was just a kid
When you first did that walkaround I said, "He missed the trunk lock unique feature." but glad you did come back to it and gave the demonstration on its function. I have a neighbor who has a collection of old derelict cars (all for sale) in his backyard and has a 4-door version of this car, in the same color with that trunk lock feature. I have recorded myself doing the same demonstration on his car's lock also. I think this lock is an extra cost option upgrade from the "Starburst" lock that was offered. I would buy that car from him just for that "feature" if that car was a 2-door. ...you will not find "unique and novel features" on a TESLA these days. (or any newer car)
That trunk mechanism was really cool.. car is now a days are very cookie cutter I called them appliances we are living in the appliance era when you can buy a new car cheaper than fixing the one that you already have that is what I call an appliance and it sucks it’s never going to go back to the way that it ever was I don’t believe people don’t like checking their oil or doing any maintenance stuff..
@@What.its.like. Yes, "Appliance" cars are right which is akin to a Robot with no "soul", gas-powered cars are akin to being "human-like" because, like us, they need air (to breathe) and fuel (food) to function.
The trunk-mounted AC units were effective but passengers experienced a cold draft on their shoulders. It took awhile in the early 1950s to develop the technology to fit the entire unit under the hood. Some got there before others. Turning the original AC unit on in any vehicle of that era caused considerable parasitic power loss. A driver could feel the drag on the engine when that AC was operating.
Thank you so much for all of that insight I’ve definitely read articles on that.. I watch a lot of Leno’s garage and he has an imperial where he said that you could hang meat in the car because of the way the air conditioning system work blew from the back
LOL, Nick! I was the same in my family's 1969 Grand Prix and later in our 77 Cutlass.
Nash was the first to offer a Heating and air conditioning system housed entirely under the hood. It was available on all models, including the compact Rambler, for about half the cost of other systems at $395.

Just how many trunks have you been in? 😂 I love this car. Lincoln was a style leader in the 50s … much classier (IMHO) than the luxury competition. I was shocked at the cramped interior though. Still … gorgeous!!!!
Only a few all for the channel none outside of the channel, my grandma is Italian and she always used to threaten us if we were bad by saying if you little basta** don’t behave I’m going to roll you up in a carpet and throw you off a bridge.. my thought process was when I was 10 years old when she said that was well you have to catch me first lol

Yeah it’s crazy how backwards everything is and how expensive everything has gotten in build quality is nothing like it used to be I would love to see what the Camaro looks like in 70 years if it’s even still operational.. My biggest gripe with new cars is the lack of soul when I stand next to or get in an old car it just has so much character Ian charm as well as personality because you have to think back in the day one bought a car that fit their personality style or class and nowadays it’s like that as well but everything looks the same Mercedes has a car that looks identical to a Hyundai Sonata..
I've often wondered what was it about presenting cars in brochures and publications using renderings instead of photos..Was it easier to sell a lifestyle? Was it cheaper?.They could manipulate renderings more easily? Make them appear bigger? Or not pay copyright to fashion models..or all of the above ..Some even appear to be hybrids ie: real car photo ..rendered people, either way the consumer lost out here.
I love the 50s water color ads it’s on of the best aspects of the 50s I’m not a fan of the high contrast and over saturated look of the late 60s early 70s
Yep ..I seem to remember even the ads in Road &Track were renderings into the 1970's.

The '56 Lincoln Premier and Capri cars, were some of the most beautiful cars of the Fifties... Very trim and lithe-looking despite their enormous size.
It’s honestly not that big it’s smaller than a 2020 gmc Denali

Oh... And the 71-76 Cadillac Eldorado. I'm not sure that there wasn't any car WIDER than those things 🤣

They're similar to an Aircraft Carrier.
They were so wide inside, you could COMFORTABLY sit four average-for-the-era-sized people across each bench!
And the '58s had an incredibly powerful engine in them... That got "tamed down" over the remainder of the model line.
But those '58s could really scoot!
Did I mention "Aircraft Carrier"?🤣

Your channel is getting to be my favorite, love your enthusiasm and thorough research on the cars featured for a younger person you remind me of myself as I was loving cars from a toddler on up; I literally learned the alphabet by reciting car names from Apperson to Zephyr. and watched, learned and read about cars as I grew up, and I know every year make model style and features of every American and some foreign cars from 1899 to almost today so keep the great content coming, appreciate your hard work and love the old Chevy truck you own-we had a 1965 C-30 flatbed with a 327 V-8, and it was a blast to drive for a 14 year old.
The Lincoln is one year older than me and is one of my favorite 50's Lincoln in my favorite color. That back seat looks to be the same room and dimensions as a 1959-64 Buick, Chevy, Pontiac, Olds 2 dr hardtop; we had a 59 Chevy and that back seat was deep and the back was almost straight up.
A little education on pre-AMC cars made before 1955 before true air conditioning was offered if you don't know already: from 1939 through 1957, Nash advertised their "Weather Eye" thermostatically controlled heating system as "Nash air conditioning" which confused me when I saw an ad in the 60's but it was a heater ventilating system only featuring the first cabin air filter ever installed in a car, so check it out if you run across an early Nash car.

Thank you it means a lot I’m hoping one day this will be one of the go to classic car channels go heavy on specs and information because no one else does. And it’s important if you want to own these cars what the performance is or was and driving experience is 2nd (because you can have the same car and it drive completely different because things might wear out different or in different areas as time goes on
A truly magnificent looking car, if I had one of those I would definitely want to treat her like a lady. My only complaint is that it is just too big. Too bad it was not the same size as that of a 1955 Lincoln, or that there were two different sizes made that year, as Packard ended up doing with their Executive and Patrician models, because then I'm sure they would have sold a lot more of those beauts with a price tag that more people would be able to afford.

One of the most beautiful designs of the Fifties, perhaps the best of all. No four door hardtop was available on the 56 models. That came along with the 57s which also retained the two door hardtop, convertible, and four door sedans.
There were reports that some at Studebaker Packard approached Budd and Ford about using that body for continuation models at Packard. That idea did not get off the runway. As Packard crumbled, a victim of the hubris that caused that company to buy Studebaker, stylists did leave the company and go elsewhere. The lead designer on the Predictor (Packard's last advanced styling effort) was Dick Teague who went to Chrysler and thereafter to American Motors.
The head of Packard, James Vance, went to Edsel.

My Dad's 1956 Dodge Royal Custom Lancer had a dealer-added AC that looked almost identical to the one in that Lincoln. I wonder if they were made by the same company.

@@What.its.like. From what I could see, the add-on type ac units were usually made by one of three companies. They all looked similar. I'm sure some of them had specific markings for the cars they went in.

The pro/con comment about vague handling may have been influenced by the fat this car's predecessor was the last of the Carrera Panamericana Lincolns, much smaller and tighter cars, which had legendary handling. The '56 was bigger and floatier, to match the bigger Cadillac and Imperial, both of which had grown. I don't know the numbers, but cars said to have had the biggest trunks were the 1954 Pontiac Star Chief, which had a higher beltline than this Lincoln and a huge rear overhang (the trunk was bigger than the contemporary Buick's), and the 1962 Cadillac, which was the car used by the vampire detective in a TV show ("Forever Night" or Forever Knight"?), because he could sleep in the trunk.

@@What.its.like. In the thirties and forties, Chrysler Corporation had coupes which had the same wheelbase as the sedans. They had huge trunks in the space made available by the shorter greenhouse. The Chrysler Saratoga coupe had the same wheelbase as the rest of the Chrysler line, probably giving it the biggest trunk ever. It was also the lowest-price Chrysler eight, making it the ideal car for a high-performing sales rep.
As for the 10 X increase factor of the $ over time, with cars, particularly the Mark II and the Eldorado Brougham, and, of course, the Rolls-Royce (5000 pounds, or $14,000.00 in today's money), these cars cost a lot more relative to other costs of living. Our family home cost $13,000.00 in 1953. That home, today, in a location that hasn't seen sky-high price increases, would be about $260,000.00, or 20 times. If GM or Ford commissioned new bespoke luxury cars, with the same equipment and hand craftsmanship, they would be more comparable to Rolls-Royce. Not that it matters, but $10,000.00, or $13,000.00 today would be more like $250,000.00-$280,000.00. Yes, they were cars for rich people.
13,000 was closer to $130,000ish still a lot but the cheapest car now and the cheapest car then are totally different as in can’t buy a cheap car now just did a 39 ford pickup where Price equivalent would be $12,700 something like that can’t get a new truck for $13,000 in the USA
OK, what's the deal with the backup lights on this car? Or does it "not" have backup lights? It looks like there "were" NO backup lights, and that someone has now added them where the exhaust used to come out? Hard to imagine that a car this expensive would not have had backup lamps (lights) -- but I did not see any as your camera panned around the rear of the vehicle. Curious to know more.
The car video doesn’t have backup lights they would be on each side of the license plate. The exhaust was relocated to come out right below the bumper.. instead of through it

Expand the words you use,, Think about the things you want to touch on in your videos and find interesting terms about them. Just constructive criticisms, hope you don't mind.
I come a very critical family so I like constructive criticism.. my mind sometimes just goes blank we are 148 videos in so I just try to figure out different words to use sometimes not the best words and try to change it up a smidge like this format was a little different than all the other videos previous just to keep it fresh and not repetitive. =)

Back seats of all coups, and this is a coup, are small, uncomfortable and cramped, made for a couple of kids, that's about it. Convert' is the same, avoid the back seat, it's a car made for two people, not six. You want comfortr, get a fordor sedan, Town Car beats them all.

A friend of mine has a De Soto 56 De Soto one of the biggest backseats up any car that I’ve ever been in it’s almost like you’re sitting in a limo.. Granted it’s a four-door but I’d venture to say that it has more weight room in the back than a Lincoln town car from the late 70s that car is absolutely huge

When you & your spouse have a nice coupe and another couple wants go out for the evening or on a road trip with you, they'll usually offer to take everyone in their sedan or SUV, especially if they've ridden any where in the back seat of your coupe before. That way, you keep your coupe nice & original. 😉
If the back seat was designed for a couple of kids, why the ash trays and cigarette lighters? That looks terribly cramped. They should have shortened the trunk and extended the passenger compartment, IMHO.
Car would have been a nice driver with AWD, cruise control, collapsible steering wheel, airbags, and Packard or Imperial torsion bar suspension. Otherwise I categorize it as a really well designed luxary car from the mid fifties, but a bloated beast that rolls too much on cornering, which preempts its historical greatness. Not saying it is a bad investment.
Agree...of course, the concept of Safety in cars was about 10 years in the future.

I can tell you, that recently I talked with a gal whose boyfriend was stationed aboard the USS Lincoln...the sailor referred to it as "the Stinkin' Lincoln, for whatever reason.
