A reason for that is due to Wasteland. The Rangers are known as The Desert Rangers there. And before Fallout came out, there was a planned sequel for for Wasteland called Hatepoint but a reson for why that was canned was cause EA pushed this game called Fountian of Dreams as its successor.
You can heal dogmeat w food or stimpacks and look at him w binoculars and it will say injured , severely injured etc so he can be healed bless that dog

well theres a mod called fallout fixt basicly enhance your fallout gameplay experience hell even companion can use any and all weapon too but thats if you wanted them to get armed in heavy arsenal and if you like they can equip in power armor too, no joke

For posterity sake - My poor Dogmeat was obliterated on the first move during a fight with a mutant patrol on the way to Mariposa... the opening move was to minigun the head clean off of my poor pooch. I was mortified! He was perfectly positioned from the opening, exposing his broad side to the mutants. Before he could even move they decapitated him and his headless body fell to the ground. I let it stand as part of my vault dweller's story - another fallen unsung hero of the wastes. 😢Oh and Rest in peace Ian, the flamer mutant at Necropolis served you extra crispy because even though you had a sweet gun, you were constantly getting in their way! 🤬 Tycho however, lived to see another day because I dismissed him on the way to Mariposa. I think, because I did take my combat shotgun back from him and left him with only a knife and 1 stimpack.😮💨
you don't have to you can simply gift them items through barter system but in fallout 1 if you happened to want them back they want to be paid for it that's why ppl use the steal option but you certainly don't "have" to.
by the time you get power armor and big weapons you should absolutely dismiss Tycho and Ian unless you want to see them horribly murdered by supermutants. They are great for carrying the early game but late game threats will just SHRED them.
I just had them sit out all the combat and used them as pack mules. I lost Dogmeat in the desert where he died doing what he loved, chomping on super mutants.

Your charisma is too low. And you probably have as much companion your charisma can manage ( 2 charisma = one companion) so if you want 5 companions, you need 10 charisma.
Tycho is the best and most accurate among human companions, Ian is worst coz he can accidentally kill you or your other companions. Dog is the dog, it can knock down your enemy just with one bite
A great guide, I'm close to finishing the first game already but unfortunately I lost all my companions in battles. Can one equip companions with armor in fallout 1? (For example metal armor). I tried giving it to them through the inventory but nothing happened and a couple of minutes ago I've seen Tycho in combat armor in the walktrough video. Do you know if I can do the same?

@@mahamann7734 I've recently found out: you should give them armour through stealing (or trade, but this one's less effective) and in dialogue with them there must be an option "change your armour" or smth like that. I haven't tried it myself but there must be that option somewhere in the dialogue, just like the option "Draw your best weapon next time you go into battle" (This one is for sure present in dialogues with companions)

Above all rules should be explained in the game and if not then in a well-designed manual from the developer. If someone is forced to use external sources in order to complete the game, then something is entirely wrong either with the game design or with the manual. I do not need to read dozens of chess books in order to understand the rules of the game, because that is what we are talking about here.

Yep, all of them. In Fallout 2 though, companion capacity relies on Charisma.
