Great job brother. I am about to do this job on my explorer next week and i really appreciate your time and effort to edit and post this amazing video. Thanks
Just booked this job in at the garage. As of October 2024, Price for waterpump, gaskets and install is $2138 - We have gone for timing chain replacement too and bill has come to $2900 all in. - Warranty are only covering $1700 though.
Your very lucky a warranty covered some of the cost. This just happened to my 2016 with an external leak, some reprieve, but still $3,000 with my mechanic $5-6,000 with Ford dealership. Terrible design on a car and should be a recall as it was with Ford Canada.
I have the chain back in place with pin pulled from tensioner, a slight jiggle in chain at one side of crank gear. will oil pressure pump the tensioner a little tighter ?
Doesn’t matter if you drain it before or after just be sure to change it as you’ll likely have some coolant make it’s way into the pan during the repair 👍
Man my shit went out water pump and watching your video makes me think i can do it but after seeing that yea i changed my mind coolant is getting expensive great video 👍
I replaced my water pump a few months ago. I put everything together according to Ford recommendations and specifed torque sequences, etc. Now the new pump is leaking again. Any idea what the cause might be?
I usually take a piece of cardboard and shape it into like a half funnel up under the pump and over the edge of the oil pan, that’ll catch most of it but sometimes a small amount will still make it down. Change the oil either way 👍
Can you please explain how to get the timing marks at top dead center? I have everything done up to that point. Also, would you trust a new water pump from TRQ?
Put that crank bolt you thought I forgot back in and rotate the engine clockwise to top dead center cylinder 1 and the timing marks on the chain should line up with the dots/lines on the crank and cam pulleys. If you can’t get them to line up your timing chain may have stretched or the tensioner or guide(s) failed and you jumped timing, inspect components accordingly. 👌 Pretty much everything is made in China or Mexico these days, it is what it is, as long as the part has a warranty and they honor it I’d trust anything.
Up to you if you think it’s something you can tackle yourself. I’d avoid the dealer as you’d be paying a premium for a pretty straight forward job. If you want a shop to do it I’d shop around at some local independent shops. As for price it’s going to vary depending on if you have the chain done at the same time.
What do you charge for this job? How many hours to just R&R timing cover? I just got done changing turbos, dropped oil pan for clearance, when i put back in timing cover 10mm on bottom, i blindly ran pan bolt into random 10mm threaded hole at bottom of timing cover and i put a small ugga dugga on it, turns out it wasnt a pan bolt it just dead heads into the side of the pan, when i snugged her, it broke a big on chunk out of the timing cover. I’m tired of this car and want some one else to fix it. What is your time on just a timing cover swap?
Few hours with a lot of smoke breaks 😂 but seriously though I’ve done the turbos on our 15 sport and that was way more time consuming than the timing cover. If you’ve done all that work already the cover should be a breezy job for ya.
I’m a big “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” guy so I can’t give a mileage based recommendation for the pump (cause it’s either gonna leak or not) as for the chain though I’d recommend around every 80-90k
If I'm there I would do everything phasers, guides, and tensioners. Mostly because this is a big job and your there. If the oil is milky then you really don't have a choice. I would use only motorcraft parts
@@RiggsCo ¿what is the amount you would Charge? To have an idea. My Explorer is currently Fine, but getting close to 75,000miles. I plan on getting this done, to prevent the issue
i hope you have your car fixed by now, but i have the same problem with only 56k miles, and i am being quoted over 1800 to 2500,, which i understand, but it shouldnt be that high, then again, thats including the water pump.
@@bennyfernandez1273 with that low of miles you may still be covered by Ford. Pretty sure there’s a class action lawsuit in the works over the water pumps too. Don’t quote me on that though, just something I saw on google. There’s been a few recalls though. Faulty design and/or bad gaskets.
@@RiggsCo thanks, i am looking into the lawsuit, not sure it will cover it since i believe FORD won the suit, if i am not mistaken, and my car is 2016 with 56k miles. so its 7 years old, but with low miles,,,, thanks for the heads up ,
There are dots on the camshafts that line up with colored links on the chain. On the crankshaft end there’s a dot that goes BETWEEN two colored links that are side by side. That’s it.
Hey i think i might have just ruined this job. As i put the vise grip on the left cam i believe i felt the cam move and i also heard a slight tick. But the tick could have been from the vise grip locking. Not sure. The problem is the chain now seems to have gotten a little lose. It has a bit of slack/play. But Not enough for it to come off. The timing mark on the chain is still in line with the mark on the cam. Any idea what happened? Why did the chain get a little lose? Was it like that before and i just didnt notice? The tensioner and guides are still on. I was simply locking the cam and i heard a tick. Thanks for the help brother! I appreciate it so much you have no idea!
@@RiggsCo wow. That’s low mileage. We just got a 2016 flex and I think it has the same motor 3.5l. I heard on some videos of the water pump being redone in the 2012 and up models to hold up better from that issue, but I guess I didn’t do my research long enough.
@@RiggsCo seems pretty common problem and idiocy on Fords part of having a water pump in the engine riding with the timing chain, oh well,,,,,,,thanks for your video
Ford Service Data suggests that to do this job 100% successful you must drop the engine. So many do it in the car but there is a high chance of oil leaks afterwards. Very bad design.
I’ve done about a dozen and never had a leak afterward. The timing cover is just silicone there is no gasket so clean up the surfaces well and apply a thin layer of RTV (I use ultra gray) and a couple bigger dabs on the corners were it meets the oil pan and allow it to set overnight before filling with oil/running. Never had a problem that way 👍 dropping the engine for this job would be a huge waste of labor.
I’ve done a total of one of these in the car per the Ford Alldata manual. 0 leaks in about 12k miles so far. Yes, it would be easier to install the timing cover with the engine out but it’s not so hard to make it worth that time an effort and chances something gets messed up during that process.
Depends on what all they replace. But that’s a bit steep in my opinion. Its not a difficult job, so you don’t necessarily need to have the dealer do it. I’d shop around with some local mom&pop shops and see what they can do for ya. 👍
That’s definitely what we’ll do. The first mechanic (Goodyear) that we took it to said that the main reason they don’t touch them was because of required “turbocharger”replacement and only the deal could perform it. ???
@@Stratcat1967 do you have the twin turbo eco-boost 3.5? You might have a turbo failure (separate issue entirely) and they may have just added it to the list. Although I don’t see why they wouldn’t be able to do a turbo as well, as they’re relatively simple... My wife has a ‘15 Explorer Sport with the twin turbos and I’ve already replaced one LOL it was finicky but not too terribly difficult, and that was the backside turbo.
Dumbest damn engine design ive ever seen. Just plain stupid. I would never had bought my 2017 Explorer if i had known about this stupid design, probably another reason i had never owned a ford product in my life before this one.

Yes, the turbo 😅, and the pump is leaking fluid.
Safe to say the estimated quote seems fair, considering the labor.
