I was the only black guy in the theater watching this, when the movie was over and I was walking out, a bunch of white people started to stare at me,and this little girl said ''I'm sorry'', probably the most awkward moment of my life.

The fact that a little girl felt guilty from watching 12 Years a Slave, or the fact that there was a little girl actually watching 12 Years a Slave.

Agreed. I realize that even with his papers proving that he was free Soloman still had limited rights in the South prior to the Civil War, but it would have been nice to at lease see him flip off his former master as he was taking his ride to freedom.

I know. It just would have been nice to see something happen to the jerk of a slave master. Other than the fact that he's out the money that he paid for him. Well, hopefully he took a big bite on that and his witch of a wife let him have it.

Theres a reason why movies like this are made. True they're hard to watch, but thats the whole point. They're made so that the past does not repeat itself. And in order to do that it has to seem real. Because such things really happened.

From what I've seen, learned, and heard, about American history, slavery never went away, it just transformed and spread. Now most, if not all, Americans, are slaves to the system, and it is a subtle, almost dare I say comfortable, slavery. America has been numbed and dumbed. The "comfort" I speak of, is like the comfort you feel under morphine, or Vicodin. Weather you know your a slave to the system, you just don't care. Your, comfortably numb :).

    • @GeahkBurchill
      @GeahkBurchill 11 ปีที่แล้ว +22

Absolutely. Personally I'm shocked we haven't had more stories that take place during slavery. It has incredibly rich potential for stories that can be told in such a human way. It is America's shame that prevents us from making movies that deal with it. Pretending it never happened means we miss out on all the great drama, heroism, love, hate and tragedy of the situation. Hollywood needs to stop trying to sweep it under the rug.

I think it was like that to express that the man felt like he was a slave forever. Trapped in a hell that had no time. He might have thought he was young, he might have thought he was old, but I have to guess that after being put under that much stress day in and day out would've had you forget there was ever a time to begin with. It could be interpreted as that or I am reading too far into it.

It's one of those films that hits you so forcefully that it leaves an impression that can never be erased. The sheer brutality of it all is just astounding and I'm glad they didn't sugar-coat it. Everyone one was brilliant but oh my god, chiwetel ejiofor not winning the academy award for best actor was a crime. Would you consider yourself to be a good person?
How many lies have you told, and what do you call someone who lies? Have you ever stolen something, no matter how small, and what do you call someone who steals? Have you ever taken God's name in vain/blasphemed, even ‘OMG’? That’s taking the name of the God who gave you life and using it in the place of a cuss word - would you do that with your mother’s name? Have you ever dishonoured your parents? Jesus said whoever looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery in his heart. Have you ever looked with lust? Most people probably have broken all 5 of these commandments. I myself have. I’m not judging you but if you have done these things then you’re a lying, thieving, blasphemous, rebellious adulterer-at-heart by your own admission. That's only 5 of the 10 commandments. God is fully just so he must and will punish every and all sin (which is departure from/rebellion towards God and the conscience) when he judges us. He cannot simply cancel our debt and let us go, or else he would be unjust. If you went into the courtroom and said: ‘Yes Judge, I’ve done these things but I also give money to the Red Cross and volunteer at an old-age home. I try my best to love people’ the judge is not going to take that into consideration. You’ve broken the law; the good you’ve done won’t help at all on the day of judgement.
If he judges you by the moral law will you be innocent or guilty? Heaven or Hell? The answer is Hell. Doesn’t that concern you? But, fortunately, that is not God’s will. He is so loving and merciful, he made a way for you to be forgiven. The Son of God came down as a man, Jesus Christ, and lived a perfect, sinless life, so was the perfect sacrifice. He excruciatingly suffered and died on the cross to pay the FULL debt we owe because of sin; justice is fully done. You and I broke God's law and Jesus paid the fine in his life's blood, being resurrected again 3 days later. That’s why he said “It is finished” on the cross - in other words the debt has been paid. God has the payment ready to go for you. What you need to do is repent (recognising you are a sinner deserving God's punishment, turn to Him) and trust ALONE in Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins. Our works can do nothing as by the standard of God’s moral law we fail, but faith in him is enough to save us from all sin - past, present and future! Then though you have grievously offended God, he will forgive you and you will inherit eternal life being reborn in the Holy Spirit when you put your trust in the Lord and saviour. Too, you enter a covenant relationship with God - sonship, and truly I tell you your life will change in his presence. So repent and trust (i.e. Biblical faith), receive the free gift of grace.
He redeemed me. God, The King of The Universe, came down as a man. He lived the first 30 years of his life as a poor carpenter then spent the next 3 preaching, healing and saving souls - all the while being persecuted, insulted and hated by his own people - and took the punishment to save our lives. It’s the most amazing love that anyone ever displayed. Christianity’s not just a religion. It's a pure, sweet relationship with God. Because of Jesus, I am now a son of God. He is my dad, and you can be his child too. God loves you. Will you let him come?. . .. . .. . .

One of the gut-wrenching parts of this film that you only notice at the end is when Solomon left Patsey to be free again. This event was actually foreshadowed when Clemens left Solomon.
Solomon knows how it feels to be left behind and trapped in slavery, and he also knows he can't bring Patsey out of that situation. That at that time he is the only one that can be rescued.

You know what keeps occurring to me is how Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a book 150 years ago that dealt with the moral toll of slavery and debunked the notion of a good or kind slaver master, but there are still people who want to redeem people who owned other people rather than commenting on the shit situation of the enslaved people.
Fassbender or Cumberbatch, nice or not, *both owned slaves*, which means they *owned* as in property as in the way you *own* your dog or a farmer *owns* a cow. Who cares how _nice_ a slave masters was or what he *_might have done today_*, 150 years ago he *owned* Mr. Northup like an animal. Today or 150 years ago he would have known *owning people was wrong*.
      Historical thinking, kids!

Afolabi Bukola There are people who grew up thinking sexually forcing yourself on a woman was normal. There are people who grew up thinking domestic abuse was normal. There are people who grew up thinking verbally and physically attacking people of color and gay people was normal.
I can grasp the context of slave owners lives and appreciate the influence it had on them NONE of that ultimately condones their action or make them or their actions good, at best it is a mitigating factor. I'm not really sure what you're trying to defend here.
Slavery was so awful and freedom so profoundly important that Harriet Tubman risked her own life, to ensure that others escape and knew that same freedom. And you can be assured if they caught Ms. Tubman they wouldn't have just killed her for her efforts. Nothing short of rape, torture and eventually she'd be allowed to die.
Uncle Tom's Cabin written in the very time period in question seems to have a firmer grasp of the problem than you do.
Toni Morrison's Beloved addresses the lengths a mother will go to spare her child the horrors of slavery, but you're worried about the reputations of slave masters.
Did you watch this movie... have you ever cracked book about this period in American history. I am baffled by your misguided alligences and border on offended by your ignorance. Slavery was terrible you say, but what I said about slave masters is what you take issue with...

    • @Tebigong101
      @Tebigong101 10 ปีที่แล้ว

Afolabi Bukola .African and African American are not the same thing, Just because you're black doesn't mean you appreciate what it means to be a black American descended from slaves.
You may have supposedly gotten over your homophobia, but you need to work on your sexism. Calling someone you seem to think is a woman, missy, is condescending at best.
Also, you claim to have "opened your eyes", which is different than your first excuse for the slave owners that they didn't know any better. make up your mind. Did they not know any better or did they realize slavery was awful and choose to keep slaves anyway.
Trying to sooth your conscience by self identifying with slave owners... you're as despicable as them. I pity you.

And having a famous and well known actor in a movie GREATLY increases the movie's popularity. So i guess movie-wise Brad Pitt didnt have to be in the movie but intention and message / greater picture wise he HAD TO.

I cried twice in this movie. Thanks for the assurance, by the way. The entire ride I was just completely astonished and just wanted it to stop at points. I wanted the slaves to rebel, but it never happened. This movie just felt so real, and relatable because it's an infringement of unalienable rights that we take for granted today. It started out perfect, developed perfectly, and ended with a powerful heartbreaking bang.

The movie is one of the most frenetic, smart, biting blunt films I've seen in awhile wheras 12 Years...I could go a good year or more without having to experience that. I just wonder where Eijofor dug in himself to delivery a performance like that.

I remember watching 12 years a slave on the plane whilst on holidays and wasn't sure if I should have covered up the screen or stopped watching because of the parts that were intensely brutal. But now, after a while, it has me thinking that if we were to switch these people with animals... we still have discrimination to this day. Back then, they saw them as nothing but property and 'animals' that they could use for there own greed and believed it was okay due to society's arrogance. It hurts me to say that millions upon millions of innocent victims are tortured, whipped, humiliated, cut up, and just not respected by us "good willed" human beings. And yet, no one bats an eye because at the end of the day "hey are just animals." But injustice can't live forever. Back then it may have seemed impossible that slavery would one day be seen as a brutal time of injustice. But one day, animals will have their liberation just like these people did. And we can all do something about it.

Steve McQueen has built a great legacy on his three films. In time I strongly believe he'll become one of the greatest movie directors ever. Right up there with the likes of Kubrick, Lynch, Cronenberg, the Coen Bros, Spielberg, Hitchcock and Scorsese. He has an uncompromising artistic vision. Watch Hunger and Shame if you haven't already. And 12 Years A Slave is hands down a masterpiece. Not since Mulholland Drive has a movie affected me this much.

Mr. Jahns, if you wouldn't mind, I have a movie for you. I just came back from watching "The Wind Rises", by Studio Ghibli, and it is one of the most touching love stories I've seen in years. I'm not sure if it is showing in your area, but if it is, you should really check it out, as it deserves more of an audience than it is currently getting, and your channel reaches a large enough audience to at least boost it's commercial success. It is Hayao Miyazaki's last movie as well, so I would like to see one of my favorite director's swansong to go well for him. I would highly recommend this movie. Again, it's called "The Wind Rises". Watch it, if you can.

I really liked "12 Years a Slave," the performances were great all around, even the small ones like Paul Giamatti. I also liked how McQueen directed certain parts to keep the intensity flowing. What I didn't care for was the way the movie seemed to slow down and speed back up constantly, making for some confusing dialogue and a film that felt, frankly, a little more like 4 years a slave. It's still a great movie though, don't get me wrong.

appearance in the film, played a very pivotal role in the film. I thought he was terrific.

This movie was going to win best picture regardless of the competition. Yes, great film but there's a trend of movie's that portrait America in a bad light, which slavery was, tend to win an Oscar. Usually, the film with a British cast will win. Oscar's are totally PC predictable garbage, most of the time.

Oh fuck you, it was an incredible movie and deserves everything it gets. You're just some guy who cant seem to face the reality that slavery existed and was perpetrated by white people and eased their concience through pseudoscience and social darwinism. You seem to think that America was and is some awesome country that has never done anything wrong, well I've got news for you bruh; they're no saints. Watch the movie with an open mind and appreciate - like Jeremy says - how unapologetic it is in showing the sheer reality of the slave trade. If anything the movie was a little soft. Half the white people were either Solomans friend or showed compassion towards him.
PS before you call me some bullshit name, I'm white. Just do some research on slavery and the white mans actions from the 19th century onwards and you will literally be shocked.

b11k22 Well, spoken like a true poet! First off, I'm not going to call you any name's but you might want to learn to read first. When/if you do,read my comment again. Nowhere do I claim anything that you just posted to be true. I acknowledged thst the film was GOOD not great imo but that wasn't the point I was trying to make and clearly that went way over your head. All I was saying is the whole Oscar event is very predictable and very biased process. No one will deny that Hollywood is a very liberal place therefore you can see this play out in what film will usually win best picture. That's all. So, how you came to your idiotic conclusion that I'm a racist or that I somehow denied that slavery ever happened shows how ignorant you are. Just to make things clear, I can promise you I know more about history than you'll ever learn from the internet or on television, sorry hate to make judgments on other people. So, before you go on a angry tirade towards someone you don't know and can't even properly comprehend what a very short and simple statement they made, it's probably best to just be quiet instead of acting like a angry teenager.

***** as I said previously, it was a great film. You must not understand the point I was making. All I was saying was the process in which a film wins a Oscar for best film is not always judged by what's on screen. Usually, there are various political, social and other factors that the critics often have when making their choice. So, please go back to reading your comic books and sorry I don't have any douche. I'm sure your mother will loan you hers.

Again you clearly didn't understand what I said. I'm not gonna bother explaining something to a troll whom can't read or comprehend a simple comment. So, come back with one of your wity and brilliant replies calling me some idiot or douche. Keep up the good work! Your people need you.

By far the greatest testament to the impact of this movie is the fact that he still has ever so slightly less energy in this video than others - that's the aftereffect of this movie. You're just like "Well... now I'm going to go sit in a corner and think about my predescesor's mistakes". And then, it kind of grows to, "What about todays society will be in a movie like this a hundred years from now?"

I haven't seen it yet, but I can already tell this will be a movie that has people sayin they don't want to see it because it's "too real". Just makes me want to see it more.

Probably going to get a lot of hate for this but... I found this portrayal was just torture porn. Felt like the movie cared more about shocking me with overly dramatic scene after overly dramatic scene than it did telling a well put together story. The time line was 12 years? they did a really bad job of making it seem like 12 years had passed. Too many scenes that just hung on for like a minute with literally nothing going on. There is nothing in this film worth re-watching it for.
If I ever do re-watch this film I'm going to end up fast forwarding too many scenes out of just "Ugh get on with it already." Worth watching once yes, regret buying it on blu-ray though.

So you find the goofiest thing in my favorites to invalidate an argument I'm making? Every one has 'goofy' things in their favorites. What a cop out. lol

Agreed. Such an overrated movie. Great performances though. But no movie of the year.

My two cents on this movie (Disclaimer: I really liked this movie):
1- McQueen did a great job with this movie, but if Mel Gibson would have directed it, it would have been much more dramatic and emotional in my opinion. I know that Mel Gibson's name is equal the devil now, but look back at Passion of the Christ and then back to Twelve years of slave and you will certainly notice a big difference. This movie wasn't gore-y or dramatic enough to hook me emotionally.
2- If Solomon wrote the book, why not have him narrate his story throughout the movie (Sort of like each character in Sin City). I really liked Solomon in this movie and the actor playing him is worth of an Oscar, but I still did not feel as if I was connecting enough with him and his emotional suffering until the last scene.
3- We seriously needed time skips. Just mentioning it in captions would have been enough. I did not even feel that it was twelve years and I would not have knew it if it weren't for the actual title of the movie.
Aside from that it was a really good movie and I in no way feel that I have wasted my time watching it. I'd give it a solid 7.5/10
