@@techknowlux Yes, I just scored one at Costco during the holidays. They had them marked down to $499, and configured with 16GB RAM from the factory. The only downside is the Costco ones come with the RTX 2050 GPU, and not something newer and more powerful. I watched your video because I'm thinking about maxxing mine out to 32GB, and wanted to get a feel for whether I should do it myself vs. have a local computer shop do the upgrade for me.
Excellent video! I build, rebuild, and upgrade my desk top almost annually. This is the first time I attempted it with a laptop. You gave me the confidence that I needed. Thank you! You have a new subscriber. On a side note, one of the thermal pads was well stuck to the RAM card. If this happens to anyone, DO NOT just rip it off in frustration. Just tease it up and you won't have to replace it. Also, don't try to remove the deco panel without removing all the screws. The 2 screws closest to the deco panel go through the retaining tabs in the panel.
You're very welcome. Gotta be careful with anything inside a laptop and gentle. Take your time and understand what you're doing and what's going to happen as a consequence and you shouldn't have any major issues. Thanks for the tips as well. Will help a lot of other folks.

I also got the the 4050 mine is the ryzen 7 and only 8 ddr5 ram and 512 m.2ssd but it’s so easy to upgrade im going to add another 8g ram make shur they match as far as specs and im getting another ssd to put in the extra slot of 500 i want everything to match but im ok with 16 g ram and to have duel channel is great and to have a total or 1t ssd is more then enough for me
I upgraded mine with a crucial ddr5 5600 8gb. It runs much better. Glad I got the ryzen and 4050 model. The 4060 is not worth the extra money and the Intel is less energy efficient from what I've seen.

@techknowlux I bought a 1 stick 16g RAM that is 4800 mhz, do you think that the performance will be affected because of the speed of the ram?
There is a difference in performance between 4800Mhz and 5600Mhz, but it's minor. So you'll be running single stick 16GB DDR5?

ALWAYS BUY TWO STICKS OF RAM OR MORE OF THE SAME MODEL. DO NOT ONLY BUY ONE. YOU WILL SEVERELY IMPACT PERFORMANCE. It's the equivalent of having a single road for a big city. You will have too much traffic.

One question, did you disconnect the battery from the board at all(IE unplugging the power cable from the motherboard)? I didn't see it in your video, though you did cut the video up I can see. When I upgraded my old HP laptop that was something the guy did before tampering with the RAM. Is that something that should be done here?

DDR5 is already dual channel. I've just upgraded to 32Gb DDR5-5600 and worked as a charm

Great video! I have almost the same lenovo (Mine is Intel core I5-13420H and RTX 4050) it came with a single Samsung DDR5 5200Mhz 8Gb, Since i cant find the same exact memory ram i decided to buy one a littlebit slower (4800Mhz, but from Samsung 8Gb and almost the same model) and then run a test to see if it works fine.
And what was the end result? Did it actually run fine?
@@techknowlux The product has not yet arrived. By Wednesday I may be able to get it in my hands and install it, I already updated the BIOS to avoid possible incompatibilities so I'm looking forward to it. Don't worry, I'll tell you if my project works!

@@mertveziroglu3424 It's the same idea that I had in mind, I hope it works because otherwise it would be horrible since I don't want to pay 40% more (the prices in my country Argentina are crazy and change day by day) and I would find memories from different brands (not the Samsung one like the original one on my notebook)

I just bought LOQ 15 2023 (I think it is 2023). The specs are: i7 13650HX, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA RTX 4060 with 8GB VRAM and 512GB SSD. Have you done any upgrades on that particular LOQ model? If so, I would be very interested to watch it.

Thanks for the video! I’ve been looking for a while for a good 8gb of ram for my LOQ 15 since the part on the lenovo website is $70 US. The ram you used is only $28 US. And just to confirm, the ram would work with all models of the LOQ 15?

This is an amazing video, I have an LOQ 23 model and it will help me upgrade however I just wanted to know one more thing, I noticed that your memory is consuming 39% of ram and it's the same for me it uses almost 6 GB of ram when kept on ideal why is that so? I tried to reduce it but nothing helped, is there a way around or this how windows 11 works? Please help
What should I do if one of the very first tiny screws got stripped but are still in the laptop
@thegamergodbroyt4620 Ouch. You'll need some way to remove those screws. I suppose you could try a precision needle nose plier or something to remove them. There are also special tools to remove screws once they've been stripped.

I purchased this bad boy for $830 CAD refurbished from a reseller on Best Buy's website. I got extremely lucky as the laptop was deemed to be in "fair" condition. The laptop looks completely brand new.
I read another comment on your full review of this laptop. They claim you cannot replace the supplied 8GB stick of Ram? You even state yourself in this video you switched out the supplied 8GB stick of Ram for another set of matching sticks. Can you attest to this at all?
@abomgaming you can swap out and upgrade the RAM on this laptop. The sure way is to look at the service info in Lenovo Vantage and then go to Lenovo's support site and find the exact specs for your laptop. I would be surprised though if you can't upgrade the RAM. There is no model of the LOQ series that has soldered RAM to the best of my knowledge. Report back your findings. Of course you can pop off the bottom cover and have a look... 100% sure method.

Yes of course. You can buy any brand. Better if both modules are part of a kit of course.

Missing? That's a good one. No headache. There's plenty of screws to hold things in place and annoying clips too.

No if you poke around in the BIOS this can happen. I must've toggled something. I got it running at the specced 5600MHz after resetting to defaults and then rebooting from the BIOS.
I was thinking of buying the CORSAIR - VENGEANCE 32GB (1PK 32GB) 4800MHz DDR5 C40 SODIMM, do you think it will work? I’m just gonna take out the 8 Gb one and put in the 32 Gb one.
@julianwalker1843. I'd be careful with a single 32GB module. According to the official specs the largest single DIMM module supported is 16GB. The main things to note are that it's SODIMM - so it'll fit in the laptop, and that it's DDR5 and at 4800MHz or higher. The C40 are other performance number that don't make all that much of a difference except very specific scenarios. If you do manage trying it anyway, let me know if it works out. People have had some success with exceeding the specified RAM modules.

and booted up in seconds. Stinkin fast with no issues. RAM model KF556S40IB-16

@riverversteeg7086 Yes, please disconnect the battery before doing this. Additionally you should use an anti-static strap or anti-static surface/pad to make sure you don't discharge any static electricity into the device. Just because I "winged it" doesn't mean it was the right way to do it.
Mine is with 8GB x 2, If I upgrade one of those to 8GB with 16 GB (altogether 24GB ) would it reduce performance ?
@virajnanayakkarawasam6397 What is the purpose to upgrade to 24GB? It is better to keep RAM symmetrical. However, it will not reduce performance. You will just not get the full performance benefit from 2x16GB.
Hi, I bought a crucial 8gb ddr5 5200mhz, is that compatible with sk hynix 5600mhz? Would that cause problem in my laptop if I install it?
@Mufasa191 It will not cause any problem but that means the system will only be able to run RAM access at 5200Mhz (the slower module). Or it could be that the system will default to single-channel RAM. In rare cases it could cause crashes or instability.

@MrFrdse It is possible that different configurations and regions have different RAM speeds on offer. Check the official specifications for the model that you purchased to see what speeds your model should be running.

@Ajoajani34 No there is not. You can mix and match the brand as long as the core RAM specs are the same. That being DDR5, SO-DIMM, 5600Mhz, 1x8GB module for example.

For anyone watching, there is no clip you just lift it up and off, theres little nubs that might be friction to hold the cover in place but thats it. Whats the purpose of this cover?
@jeremy6384 The cover is just a shroud it seems, there's no insulation inside or insulating material. I was also surprised and didn't understand why they needed this cover. But it's basically as you described, remove the black tape and easily pull it up out of the tabs/pins. Will keep that in mind for next time.
@@techknowlux your video solved my problem which was "where is the RAM!?" and there it was under a random cover. I wonder if that cover causes more heat than protection?
I brought the i7 14gen with 4060 with a single 16gb ram ddr5 5600mhz stick.. confused with 5600mhz CL46 or 5200mhz CL42 or 4800mhz CL40.. please advise.. also did you unlug the power cable from the battery to the motherboard before installing the ram stick?
@shakeebahmer To be honest, I don't think it'll make much difference. Go with the faster speed. Unless you have a specific use case and timings matter, the impact is minute. And the CL is just one of the two dozen or so timings that RAM operates.

@Ogkonnx You can also upgrade the SSD (the hard drive) to add more storage to install and play more games/movies etc on your laptop.
I got one stick of patriot ram and have not installed it yet do you think I really need another patriot to match or should I be fine with the mix , if I end up having problems I can always get another one but just wanting your opinion thanks

@Cod-Convict The haters have deep pockets. Let 'em have it. With 1TB SSD you can run the LOQ 15 at 1080p with the RTX 4050 for several years without issue. The saving grace was the 1080p screen. Lenovo made the right decision there.
@@techknowluxI agree I’m starting to tweak the graphics now but if someone is just a regular person that doesn’t want to fuse with it you can play most games without messing with anything , and after I get my extra 8g tomarrow and that ssd I’ll be fully good , I have no issues playing on 1080 it’s still really good so thanks man and to anyone second guessing this laptop is recommended by a lot of people as the best buget laptop out thier

Yes looks like there shouldnt be any problem unless you end up with some bizarre Micron E-die chips. Lol. This issue has stopped being a thing since the DDR2/DDDR3 days afaik. Same capacity/speed should be enough.

@Masterpg2007 You can use 4800, 5200 or 5600. Those are the speeds supported by the LOQ 15.

@glennnumfor875 Yes, but depending on your CPU, if you have Intel 12th gen then your max supported memory speed is 4800Mhz and not 5600MHz.

@dafinreysah3125 Yes there is. You can add another SSD. But please check the official specifications for your specific model on the Lenovo website so you know what size SSD you need. It will be either 30mm, 42mm or 80mm length NVMe PCIe Gen 4 SSD.

Yes you did. How is it amazing? Your choices for 2230 and 2242 SSDs are quite limited. Especially for larger capacities. But if you plan to use that as a 512GB boot drive, and have a larger 2280 SSD for storage/apps/games etc, then it works.
@@techknowlux usually at this price point a lot of manufactures just use 1 m.2 slot. I'm impressed that they used the smaller m.2 slot as it avoids confusion on the customers side as if they used the larger slot and a consumer decided to buy an m.2 slot, they will likely buy a 2280 size and not the smaller one , if they don't confirm it beforehand.
Can I use 16 GB DDR5 4800 mhz Sodimm? Instead of 5600 mhz?
@dr_wnk Yes you can. 5600Mhz is the maximum speed supported. Slower speeds will work just fine. If the 4800MHz is cheaper then go for it. It won't make that big a difference unless you're doing memory heavy and intensive workloads (you'll know if you are - large databases, data manipulation, 3d animation etc.).
I am planning to buy the Lenovo loq series i5 12th gen with 16 GB of RAM. Can I upgrade it to 32 GB or it has a maximum limit of 16 only?
@RahulParmar-ld4ut 32GB is the maximum limit. You can by 2x16GB 5600MHz modules to upgrade and max it out.

@mcg29_33 Probably limitations on the motherboard and the CPUs only support a certain max amount of RAM. 64GB will most probably not work in this laptop. Is there a reason you specifically want that much RAM?

It actually works just fine after testing so I presume 64GB will work. Not sure why there’s so much conflicting info online

@arathvaldin1337 Thanks for the like and sub. The 12th gen Intel CPU was limited to 4800MHz DDR5 RAM. Buying 5600Mhz may cost more so you can go with (usually cheaper) 4800Mhz for upgrade.
ddr5 already works as duel channel even with a single stick.

I have a Lenovo loq rtx 3050 intel i5. Bestbuy website says it supports up to 16 gb ram but reviews said it supported 32 gb ram. Which one is it?

the ram came with laptop is it 1rx8 or 2rx8
The original RAM module was 1rx8. Same for the modules I've used to upgraded with. The Patriot 8GB modules are 1rx8. In order to get dual rank modules, you need to at least get a 16GB DIMM module. And I believe the way to identify it (apart from official specifications of course) is if the module has DRAM chips on both sides. Do you have other experience with RAM? Would love to find a guide that definitely outlines how to check for this.

Yes sir. 32GB is max supported RAM so 2x16GB would work just fine.

@getrekt6822 Yes. RAM is just RAM. They might call the profiles different things Intel's XMP and AMD's EXPO, but under the covers it's just DRAM. There may be the odd/rare case where thing don't work out. If anyone else knows differently, feel free to chime in. You are asking about laptop RAM right?

@mihaiszekely8866 What do you mean only 1 slot? The laptop has 2 slots. You can replace two modules. If you want you can also leave one 8gb module there and replace one of them with a 16gb ram.

Battery upgrade is an interesting question. As long as it fits it can physically be upgraded. But if there is some limit or hard wired the battery size then it might not be recognized as a larger battery capacity which will defeat the purpose. Do some research on this specific model.

@daenery2471 That's a much tougher exercise. Matching panels, their mount points, the pins to the motherboard connector, it's very hectic and troublesome. Why do you want to replace the screen? And with what?

@paras.p1 No. The official supported RAM for this laptop is 32GB max. That's 2x16GB SODIMM modules.

@rensmarkmagtotobacuetes9064 I used an 8GB stick (that was in the video description). But it looks like DDR5 8GB modules are become rare and harder to find. You might have to upgrade to 32GB since they're easier to find. Also prices have gone up (at least here in Canada) for RAM in general.

@hry1649 Yes. I don't see why not. Is that the 2023 model or 2022? Make sure that your CPU supports the new memory speed before buying and upgrading. You can search for it in Intel Ark database.

It should work. But then RAM will run at the slower speed of the two... at 4800. Try it and let me know.
Mine came with a 5600 and I added crucial 8gb at 5200 and it won’t run at all , reversed the ram and same issue not sure why

Just a sqaure/cross head the one that looks like a plus sign. Not the flat one that looks like a minus sign.

@@steven-jp5wnIf you press firmly but gently and can feel thay it is gripping well, you're just intially loosening the loctite on it then turning it, its not super hard. If it fits and you go slow it will work without stripping.

Thermal pads on vram are to SMALL, you need to replace them. This is the issue here.
Probably it should be a ryzen variant because the ryzen processor are hitting around 90 degree Celsius. Recommended your friend to use a cooling pad or customize the setting in custom mode placing your fans into their full speed
Definitely. Lots of room to tweak this laptop into a great little workhorse.
Full speed fans do give a lot more noise. Better to either play in Balanced mode or to get the Ryzen CPU. Keep in mind that the Intel and AMD CPUs this generation are so close, it doesn't really matter which one you pick.

@funnytube3390 There's tradeoffs for each of those laptops. But since price of the RTX 4060 and RTX 4070 are close to each other. I would say it's worth to spend the extra $40 and get the RTX 4070. The Victus is a nice laptop but the build quality I feel on the Lenovo is better. To reduce the confusion... go with the HP Victus 16. If you're only going to play games casually or sometimes, then get the LOQ 15 and save your self some money.

Yes you can. The optimal configuration is always same size, capacity and memory timings however. So two matching 8 or 16 modules at 5200MHz.
You can but dual channel ram works best when you have 2 of the same 2x8gb, 2x16gb etc.

@davidhartless1713 Do you have the AC adapter plugged in? Try turning it on that way. Alternatively if you press the power button then mash F1 to get into the BIOS, are you able to get to the main menu for the BIOS? If not, you can try to remove the stick of RAM you installed and return the original in there and see if it turns on again.

I highly doubt 64gb will work. The official specs state 16GB DIMM modules so 32GB will not work most likely.
@@techknowlux I have the same model Lenovo and although there is no real benefit to boost it to 64 gb (overkill), I upgraded mine to 32 gb and it is a world of difference. I went with Crucial RAM 32GB (2X16GB) DDR5 5600MHZ. I like background noise when I'm working, so I have TH-cam running while I work. Doing this at 8 gb was so frustrating, now it runs very smooth.

Sadly Lenovo lists the RAM capacity as 16GB maximum. I don't know why. I believe 32GB might work.

@ib0oo0 Where's the fun in that? But yes, you're right. Make sure you use anti-static surface, a grounding strap etc to discharge yourself and unplug the battery before fiddling with electronics that's extremely, and I mean extremely, sensitive to electrostatic discharge.

@The_Native_wolfAK Did you add a 32GB module + 8GB module? If it works good for you. I'm not sure why the manufacturers artificially limit the RAM capacity. The speeds I can understand due to the built-in memory controllers on the CPU/mobo but the amount doesn't make much sense. The same architecture and the Intel 13th and 14th gen CPUs can target a lot more RAM on the desktop equivalents.
