Brooks Hyperion Max - Full Review: Overpriced or Overrated?

  • Brooks Hyperion Max - Full Review
In this video I review a very expensive training shoe, the Brooks Hyperion Max. After my initial runs I was not too impressed as the high price and the sub par ride left a bad taste in my mouth. So after 100+ km did the shoe come alive and perform as well as its RRP suggests?

I posted on your initial thoughts after I had done 70km. I am now at around 190km and am loving them even more. I look forward to running in them and my ankles and knees haven’t felt this good for a while. I ran 17km at 5:37 pace yesterday in quite a bit of rain and it was effortless. Then today I ran an uptempo 5km at 3:50 pace and they felt great again. I don’t know of too many other shoes that are this light, this stable, this grippy and this comfortable at pretty much any pace and with such a nice fitting upper too. The other shoe I run a lot in is the Deviate Nitro 2 and while they are also quite versatile, I don’t think they quite match the Hyperions for slow longer runs, especially in regards to stability. They’re not as light either. Still a great shoe though.
Are the Max overpriced at full price? Yeah maybe, but I could say that about a lot of shoes. If I had the choice between these and the Tri14 (I don’t own the 15) or the Novablast 4 at retail price, I’d pay the extra for the Hyperion Max every time. Regarding the laces, I run them under the white strap all the way up and tongue movement is minimal.
    Nice review though, thanks.

It is certainly a very versatile shoe. Great to hear it's working that well for you.
      Cheers for the comment!

Great review, I've had real issues with a lot of running shoes and at 57 I need a shoe that gives me comfort on slower long runs but then when I do my faster one's it gives me a degree of propulsion. Mine have arrived and they feel great. Fingers crossed that the cushioning in the forefoot will help on longer runs.

I got my pair on a Cyber Monday sale at a super discount. Well worth it at the sale price but overpriced at RRP. Excellent lightweight shoe that is both versatile and durable. Even though it is not meant for easy miles I used it for a 15k easy run today and they felt superb. I've never had an issue with Brooks build quality and longevity so am very happy with my sale purchase.

I bought these on sale and generally like it as a lightweight up-tempo trainer and agree I wouldn't pay RRP for it, but a very enjoyable shoe if you can get it at a more modest price. Brooks fit and durability is almost always very good for me, so should get plenty of miles out of it.

Your review of this shoe is excellent and marries with my own thoughts on it. Agree, it is by no means a 'super' trainer and the foam is not going to wow you but it is an excellent non plated training shoe. I enjoy the firmer feel of the midsole and the natural ride it provides. If Brooks priced this shoe lower I'm sure they would sell a lot more. They've almost priced themselves out of the market in Australia with that RRP.

I agree that the US$170 price is too high but I do love running in this shoe. I got it on a Black Friday sale for US$65, which was a steal. The Hyperion 2 is going to be basically the same shoe, except with DNA Flash v2, which sounds pretty good, and that one is going to be US$140 and positioned against other lightweight trainers, like the Noosa, Rebel, Adios, etc. That is definitely where it fits and it is a solid shoe in that category. I have over 100 miles in the shoe and the outsole shows almost no signs of wear, while the midsole has improved over time. Great review.

$170 is overpriced but they have been on sale for many months in the USA. I picked them up in October for $89

DNA Flash V2 is coming to the Max 2 plus a slighty different stack and a pebax plate FYI

That price is too high. My experience with this shoe is that I feel slower but my Garmin reveals that I’m running faster. It’s strange, like I agree that it’s not bouncy but I can hit my paces rather easily with this shoe.

I have the same experience. Hits the paces ok just feels like I am getting no assistance from the shoe. Thanks for the comment
