Tim was commissioned to write a song to commemorate the Sydney Opera House turning 50. Tim uses his trademark wit and irony to tell the story of one of the most iconic building's in the world. Almost impossible to build, the futuristic design by Danish Architect Jorn Utzon was controversial at a time when Australia was heavily conservative and somewhat dismissive of 'the arts'. Tim sings what many thought: 'we should play it safe' with the building. Thankfully we didn't. The orange peel at the start is a reference to the Architects solution to building his fanciful sail-like design. The geometry of each section of the building (each sail or shell) fits into a globe. It came to him when cutting up an orange into segments!
I saw Tim live for the first time a few nights go. It was the best show I've ever been to. So incredibly talented, intelligent and charismatic. I love Tim's life philosophies.
Great reaction, love your channel and your Australian content. The Danish reference is for the Danish architect who designed the Sydney Opera House. Cheers from Sydney Australia.
Ur right, the entire song and it's message is sort of sarcastic or ironic. Constructing a Building with architecture as unique as the Opera house was definitely not playing it safe. Also a few little Easter eggs. "Leave the weird ideas to the Danish" = the architect of the Opera house was Danish. And the Orange Peel at the beginning = if you join all the sails of the building together It forms a perfect sphere. Supposedly the architect got the idea whilst munching on an orange.
loved this reaction. sending love from Adelaide, Australia. I saw in a comment reply that you're from Ontario Canada - my aunty lived there while the other 5 of her siblings migrated from Scotland to Australia. I hear it's a gorgeous place to be. I appreciated your openness and willingness to consider new perspectives - I think you absolutely nailed it. This song is about us making each other the ''other' and how ineffective that can make us.
Thank you so much! I've enjoyed Tim Minchin so much so far - more to come. Yes, my family came to Canada from Scotland (ancestors in Scotland, England, Ireland) a couple of generations ago. Ontario is an amazing province (but then I would say that) with loads of hamlets, villages, towns, and cities but also lots of farmland, trees, and lakes. I love swimming in the cold Ontario lakes and have been known to jump in while there is still a wee bit of ice around the edges. As with all places, Ontario (and Canada as a whole) has got its problems, too, but that's life. I don't know a lot about Australia and have never been. I did have someone send a package from there some years ago with lots of little goodies in it. Yes, including the notorious Vegemite! Lol. It is definitely an acquired taste, I think. (They sent some Whittaker's chocolate as well, but that's cheating as it's from New Zealand I think. 🙂) We had a house visitor quite a number of years ago, and I think he was from the Adelaide area. He brought his didgeridoo to play as well. Cool. Have a fantastic day! 🙂 🇨🇦
Hi. Late arrival via the algorithm. Tim is great. I don't see you have heard a lot of his music beyond the comedy shows? Try "I'll take lonely tonight" perhaps.
Hi! Thank you for watching and commenting. I have added the song you mentioned to my list. I found the more serious side in "Apart Together" very nice. 🙂

Tim was the perfect choice to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Sydney Opera House! Just a brilliant job and so many great cameos!
Yes, I couldn't agree more. 🙂

Thank you for commenting and adding information. Well appreciated. 🙂
Sadly because of all the controversy Jørn Utzon never saw the finished building in real life - he left and never came back.

I wish I could see his show multiple times. I saw it on Saturday in Perth and it was the best show I've been to.
@@PianoDiary85That's fantastic. If all goes well, I will be posting my reaction to Tim's "Drowned" tomorrow. 🙂
@@PianoDiary85 saw him last Friday. Asked for an autograph and he scribbled long haired lefty joker and signed it. Had it turned into a tattoo
