What you said about meaning is basically what Tim believes now. I think when he delivered this speech he had a stronger belief that life had no meaning. He has recently altered that opinion slightly, saying that we give our lives meaning through the stories we tell ourselves about who we are, but that life has no inherent meaning. That's one of the things I like most about Tim. He openly admits when he may have been wrong, or when his opinions have changed. he doesn't see that as some kind of weakness, whereas a lot of people would be defensive. He has also stated there are a number of his comedic songs he wouldn't write these days because he doesn't think they put out the right message any more. He wants to put out more positive music which is partly why he has moved away from comedy. He finds comedy difficult to navigate, especially as someone who is well off and very privileged, he doesn't want to punch down on people who aren't as privileged as him like a lot of comedians do. He has only ever punched up at the more powerful, or created avatars to make his arguments (like Sam and Storm).
He is an amazing performer in so many ways. Yes, our ideas and thoughts change - and should - as we and society learns, grows, and changes sometimes. It makes sense, for sure. There is always nuance to what we say and exceptions, etc. I think he did such a good job on this. Thank you for commenting. 🙂
