      Only thing to dislike about this video is the abysmal thermal performance of the older gen omen laptops.

      I did this long ago. There really isn’t a need for this since displays are much nicer now.
      Thin bezel laptops are not easy to remove their bezel without damage. They also use adhesive on the chin making it ever worse.

    An advice I'd like to give to people looking forward to repasting this laptop is that there is such thing as putting too much thermal paste when repasting a laptop, at least this one. I have repasted mine twice with kryonaut, and the result differ A LOT. First time used the pea method, a method I've used before and never gave me any problems, and when I started up the laptop noticed that my idle temps hadn't changed, at stock the first months my idle temp was around 45, when I begun the process of repasting was aroun 57, and when I repasted the first time was 54. As I kept using the laptop for a few days, for both gaming and architecture rendering workflows, with fans at max I still hit around 95 degrees, which was better than the 100 mark but not by much. Got stressed out, so time for a second repaste. This time I tried to be more careful, apparently even the pea sized amount was too much, and kryonaut is known to have problems if you're constantly going over 80°. So, I went in, cleaned up, but this time in the CPU I applied the paste with the tool included, just a thin layer, I still used the X method on the GPU, which didn't go above 70 even on stock paste (it's evident that is because there is more copper meant to disipate heat from the GPU), my theory was that when the cooler is that limited what you want is the heat to come out from the cpu as fast as posible, if you put too much thermal paste it will drool out the sides and when the heat transfer occurs instead of most of the heat going directly to the copper it will work around the excess of paste(at least that's the explanation in my head) and once I'm done, start up the machine, 40 degrees at idle, I had previously repasted another Omen that reached 25 degrees at idle(granted this was an i7-6700HQ), but now cinebench showed improvement, temps were around the high 80s with an undervolt, there seemed to be no thermal throtle, and if you are willing to put the fans at max you can play games like Control or Horizon Zero Dawn with 65° on the CPU (even tho it's evident the game is GPU bound, previously I also reached 98° in this title) So my advice is apply the paste with care, the heatsink is heavy emough that it will make contact all the same, and if you're using Kryonaut make sure to not push far your machine for the first few weeks, my experience also shows that the first few weeks the paste somehow isn't that settled and degrades faster if you push it too much. Also, thanks Bob for continuing to produce content for this laptop, it's evident that the 2020 model is a very good successor but this 2019 chasis never seemed to recieve much love.

      Hello , Thanks for your advice mister , i have a few questions tho what technique should i use to repaste it i couldnt quite get it , should i put a lot of paste or less , im looking forward to repaste mine with kryonaut too so im just wondering is it worth it or not rly ? Thank you

    • @santiagomonteromendez1371
      @santiagomonteromendez1371 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pftw600 I recommend the spatula, just a thin layer should be enough. You have to remember that technically the heatsink and the CPU/GPU are in contact, the thermal paste just compensates for micro scratches in the copper. I usually add a pea sized dot for the CPU and a line for the gpu, then spread with the spatula to get a thin layer covering all the die. The more surface you cover the better, then put the heatsink nice and steady.

      @@santiagomonteromendez1371 Because mine now is 95C on heavy loads , which is kinda annoying and i get some throttling soo...what is the temp decrement that am gonna have with the thermal paste and do you recommend a better paste or it doesnt matter with this laptop cuz i've seen some other people on YT repasting their laptop and they get huge decrement in the temps but this video shows that there is no big difference before/after repaste so it kinda worried me.

    • @santiagomonteromendez1371
      @santiagomonteromendez1371 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pftw600 I used kryonaut, repasting and cleaning alone might reduce some of the throttling but it's possible that you still reach the 90s, with a lot of throttlestop tweaking I was able to get 70-80ish temps in the cpu and 60ish temps in the GPU under load with max fans. I kinda set 6 core clocks to 4Ghz, since I saw that there wasn't much to gain from leaving it trying to get to 4.1 or 4.2. I also tweaked the Power limits to avoid high temps but also avoid Power throttling. From my experience I feel like kryonaut needs some tine to adjust... The first time I repasted I went on to start testing right away and temps were lower but in less than a week they were back high, I read that kryonaut doesn't perform as well once yo go above 80 °C for long periods of time. So I repasted again, made my throttlestop tweaks and then tried to not force the laptop for a few days, I made sure that it got cold from time to time... My idle temps went from 60C before repaste, 50C after 1st repaste to 35C after the second... It's been a while since I repasted and my idle temps are now at 45C which I think it's still a win. But if you repaste you must know that from time to time you'll have to repaste again. On really heavy and long workloads I still reach 95 but while gaming temps are closer to 85ish on CPU demanding games, games that are more gpu bound like control my cpu temps are closer to 65-70. But I must say that all of these are with max fans (except idle of course)

    Hi Bob. I actually appreciate the black cover as it provides good protection when applying liquid metal. I added some electrical tape around the CPU & GPU dies to seal it and provide full protection to the underlying board along with some nail polish on the transistors around the CPU &GPU. From my point of view, it is as if that black cover was engineered for liquid metal. Enjoying my temps of 65c when gaming (undervolt applied of course on i7 CPU 9th gen & on the 80w Nvidia rtx2060).

      Monitor the temps in real-time with MSI Afterburner and see if that’s the case. What’s “severely” in this case? If you’re only losing 10% then it’s possible that’s it’s due to thermal throttling. If it’s falling on its face into a slideshow of FPS then it may be something else.

      Hi, the trick is to undervolt your CPU. Considering the version you have, you are probably running an 8th or 9th gen intel. Usually applying an undervolt somewhere between 135mV and 150mV should lower your temps by 10 Celsius. You have three options to do this :
      1) Intel XTU software which is quite easy
      2) there is now an undervolt option directly in the latest version of Omen Command Center (there is an auto feature to find the safe setting but it is quite conservative, you can also set the valur manually)
      3) the third option I don't recall the name but it is quite advanced and kind of overkill.

This is something that continues to this day with Omen laptops, and it seems like this will never get remedied. I refuse to EVER purchase another Omen again. I bought a Lenovo legion 5 that is just as powerful and runs a hell of a lot cooler then the mini ovens HP likes to sell their consumers for top dollar prices. If you are thinking about purchasing a laptop, avoid Omen laptops at all costs. Playing even older games will have your CPU running at nearly 85-90+c.
