5:30 Thomas with a flat character arc doesn’t sound too bad. He’s kinda like Sonic, cocky, impatient, mean at times, rebellious, but he’s also compassionate, free-spirited, and does things his own way.
It’s also better to have a flat arc when you write an ongoing series.
It’s totally possible too as he could be the one to inspire change in others, but to be fair Edward was tailor made for that role and wouldn’t have it any other way

in season 5 Thomas starts to show character development and now instead of the tender engines telling him he needs to Learn from mistakes it’s him who tells them they need to become a better member of society or better train
Thomas has actually developed over the past few seasons. Season 5 was when he fully matured while being cheeky once in a blue moon and not as often as he was in the previous seasons

Fellow 'tismo here. There's a huge JRR Tolkien backstory in Thomas, so much that the author wrote a whole Similarion about it in a book with lore of each town and engine and history. The book doesn't really explain why the trains are alive though, so here's a quick explanation on some things. Fair warning, this is kinda long and pretty autistic.
The locomotives need drivers to move or stop. The only thing they have control over is rocking themselves, so they can end up refusing to move by hurting themselves, or knock their drivers off the footplate. And yes, they can't stop on their own. There have been many occasions where they have runaways because there was no driver present. In the instance of Percy, he only started quickly because his driver slammed on the throttle and was bumped off the train. I don't think they specifically need drivers in later seasons after the show stopped using the original stories. I think their reasoning was it's easier to write stories about trains when they can just drive themselves.
The locos are happy as trains. They feel happiest when they're working, specifically. If they're not working, they become bored. If they're not working for extended periods of time (years, etc), they either sleep or become depressed. There has never been an instance in the railway series where a steam train wants to be a human, or a bird, or something that can move freely. The most that would happen was they'd think it'd be fun for a day, but overall they love being on the rails. Even when a tractor tried to convince Thomas that going anywhere was great, Thomas said "I don't want to go anywhere. I like my rails, thank you." It's mostly because it's in their nature to be steam trains. They usually can't understand "human" desires like roads, nature, exploration... they don't even like sights most of the time. They just love to travel and feel useful for working, that's how they're built. There was an instance in the stories where a train mentions passengers enjoying the sights, and saying "Can't understand it meself, but then passengers are queer". (lol they said queer in a kids book) There was also one instance of the original author getting pissed when he heard Henry loves stopping at a forest. He had a whole sperg moment when he said "What engine is interested in scenery??"
Yes, they do feel physical pain. You can probably see how much pain they feel when Thomas said he felt like he would explode when the fish swam inside his tank. In that instance, the steam pressure was way too much inside Thomas, so he would literally end up exploding if the driver/fireman didn't know what to do. In real life, if a driver isn't careful and doesn't open the cylinder cocks after parking for awhile (lol cocks), the engine's cylinders could explode. That would be extremely painful. It would be like your appendix bursting. But, they can be rebuilt no matter what pain their in, provided they have someone who would fix them. Henry is an example of getting beat and battered so heavily, that Crewe had to completely change his body-type just to have him fixed. You can see this happening when he crashes his fish train.
The greatest piece of trivia is that they live in a dystopia that happens to be modern times. The stories ran for years, and eventually steam was completely out of commission. This is extremely bad news for the locos because, just like in real life, any locomotive that cannot work in a railway company are either sold or must be cut up, and their spare parts are used for other things. Since steam is abolished, no other company wants them, so their only option is scrap. The only thing that can actually save them are two things: heritage railways, in the case of Stepney the Bluebell Engine (which happens to be a real life train in the UK), or Sir Topham Hatt's railway. He has steam trains that are working and doing jobs THROUGH MODERN DAY. People give him shit, but he is a goddamn savior for saving so many of his engines.

Yeah! We all gotta give props to Britt Allcroft and David Mitton for playing this crash seriously and completely straight, and not goofy unlike the original RWS story.
I’m very happy that you are reacting to “Thomas & Friends!” I definitely do hope that you do the remaining seasons of the show! 😁 Also, there’s a few things I wanted to point out: 1. Most of the episodes from the first 4 seasons were adapted from “The Railway Series” book which were written by Reverend Wilbert Awdry and/or his son, Christopher Awdry. 2. Ringo Starr did the narration for the first two seasons in the U.K. and he even did the U.S. dubs for most of these episodes later on for the “Shining Time Station” show, but he left the show in 1990, I believe. George Carlin took over the U.S. dubs starting Season 3 and he even went and redid the complete first two seasons as well; George narrated Season 4 as well before leaving the show to continue with his comedy shows. Meanwhile in the U.K., Michael Angelis took over as the narrator after Ringo left and he did the next 14 seasons of the show (that’s right)! 3. Ringo declined the offer to be the narrator at first because he thought that younger kids would be more interested into spacey shows like "Star Wars" or "Star Trek." Then, he told T&F creator, Britt Allcroft that he would record himself reading some of the Railway Series stories just to see if his storytelling would work for the crew and Ringo eventually gave in and became the show's first narrator.

That theory about Henry's consciousness being transferred into a new body reminds me of Eva by Peter Dickinson. It's about a girl whose mind is implanted into a chimpanzee, and even as a kid, I thought, "wait, she has a separate stream of consciousness from the old Eva."
I like George's narration a little more but do give credit to Ringo

I don’t think he actually made jokes about beating women but from what I found, Carlin wanted to show a different side of himself - which is why he agreed to narrate Thomas for the US audience and he quite fond of Thomas for being quite intelligent for a kids show.

Henry did not die in the tunnel. The Fat Controller (although at the time he was the Fat Director) never intended to leave Henry in the tunnel forever, but long enough for Henry to realize that his vanity was stupid. Which is what happened. Later on, the Fat Controller sent Henry to Crewe to be rebuilt because Henry was an experimental engine that barely worked. When the Fat Controller first saw what he had bought, he said "I wanted a Atlantic! Not a *&*%^* Pacific!) A reference to Awdry originally having Henry an Atlantic but the illustrators always drew him wrong.
