Not only is his cello talent quite impressive, he also has great hair.
visually and audibly pleasing haha

Haha.....😂

I was supposed to see this exact performance at Carnegie Hall tonight but it's cancelled due to the virus...thank goodness I have this as backup
@@orin4654 yeah i was lucky to wee him in Pennsylvania before concerts got canceled
I feel that... My city planned Beethoven's 5th for his 250th birthday, it's been delayed until 2021!
I heard this Saint Saens concerto for the first time in February 1967 in Carnegie Hall with Mstislav Rostropovich and the London Symphony Orchestra. Andre Previn was supposed to conduct, but couldn't for some reason. Gennady Rozhdestvensky was the replacement. Also on the program were a concertino by Lukas Foss and the Dvorak Concerto, also a first for me. I was still a teenager. I remember David Dubinsky, the labor leader, was in the audience. No live music, phooey on that virus.
I saw him play Dvorak with the NY Philharmonic a few years ago. Stunning unforgettable performance. I was seated front row center.
2nd movement-6:12
3rd movement-10:54
Excellent violoncelliste. Belle performance .Merci Monsieur Gautier Capuçon.
I like how he lowers his own volume to let the orchestra shine.
Yeah, he always knows the orchestra's part and does score study.
Also give credit to Saint-Saens for his skilful and transparent orchestration that allows both soloist and orchestra to be clearly heard throughout the piece, throughout the cello's entire register. Tovey commented that this is much more difficult than it seems.

17:35 A tear in the corner of his eye is so beautiful (idk it just says so much to me)
This also brought back my happy memory with my first girl friend who played accompaniment to my performance of it in 1975.
@@SamsonCheung oh how sweet, It must be such an unforgettable moment...
He’s sweating 💀
Lmao it's true

Anyone else captivated by the fact that they are not just “playing “ this concerto. This is an academy award winning lullaby equipped with imagination, creativity, artistry, and poetic sensory overload. Pure joy - raw emotion. Wow, where is my golden buzzer. Saint-Saëns himself rolled over twice during this display…
I’m no expert on cello technique but my ears tell me that the playing here is absolute perfection :-)
A cellist and multi instrumentalist of many years here. Capucon is the best cellist currently alive (out of the ones who perform in public). And his best is really good too ... not just cause cellists these days suck.
@@agnidas5816 Isserlis, Maisky, Queras, just to name a few, are soo much better than him
Mael Perron_Guerra I personally think that the young cellists are really good too, for example Pablo Ferrandez, Zlatomir Fung, Narek Hakhnazarian,... I really like the more modern playing style and I think their technique is extremely good as well. But of course they are all playing on a really high level and this is just criticism on a very high niveau.
@@agnidas5816 when I see that, I can't help thinking that the violin sounds better, but I have to say that the cello style ain't bad neither
@@maelperron_guerra4946 Actually, Maisky's vibrato is not alsways as beautiful as Gautiers
14:21 OMG those octaves could kill someone 😭
i gotta play that next year
How old are u
yeah I can confirm.. i am risen from the dead rn 😂
The sound he makes pour out of that thing is amazing. It's a 1701 Goffriller, I believe. I LOVE his vibrato and those Basses at 16:53 made hairs stand up on my neck.
Yes, he named it L’Ambassadeur.
That part gave me chills
wait until you"re bald
Yeah it's a Goffriller 1701.
I love how this cello concerto uses the lower registers of the cello a lot. Beautifully played.
It’s absolutely stunning how Saint Saens uses the full register of the cello to express different colors!
@@chrollium6111 Tovey commented how it not only displays every register but also that it is never swamped by the orchestral accompaniment. Plus being very ingeniously constructed.
Adoro Gautier...Musica da Sogno❤..Sempre..Grande Cuore...Splendida Persona :-) Danj-Lady Fluido
Moreover the fact he is amongst the very best world class cellists, Gautier is really respectuous of people in general. When listening to him while speaking, you can understand he is simply full of modesty, not proud of his talent. "Chapeau bas" mister Capuçon and thank you for the gift you are to music and melomanes.
Saint-Saens is always unpredictable along all his compositions... that is quite fine because of the surprise one can find. Here, Gautier plays him exactly as it should be!! And with this wonderful HR FRANKFURT Sinfonie and the correct conduction the result is outstanding. Thank you!!!

This is straight up the best performance of this I've ever seen
Have you heard Janos starker play this piece ? Unbelievable, but one of the greatest rendition I’d by mstlav Rostropovich bar none
Another great rendition is the one Bruno Phillipe plays. So full of emotion and definitely one of the best renditions of this concerto.
This one's way better

@@YoungO-un8ul that one is very good-not near as good as this one though.
If I saw this live, I would be unapologetically on my feet in a heartbeat, cheering quite loudly. Breathtaking
Merci infiniment
why did i feel like i was watching James Bond playing the cello?
Did you have the sound down?
Was it his hair?😼
wym that's drake from drake and josh
literally during the whole play
because he is gorgeous! :-)
I've never enjoyed a Cello Concerto before Like I enjoyed this one by Saint-Saëns. Incredible Performance
Not a concerto ,but try listening to Beethoven's cello sonata number 2 , particular Rostropovich's interpretation of it
His sound is definitely unique. Incredible depth. And great bow arm. Jealous.
Quelle sensibilité....! Merveilleux. JcD
how to play the last theme of the saint saens cello concerto:
1. actually play it
2. smile at the concertmaster
3. bob your head at that one part (you know it)
awww you are funny !!
I usually forget what i have to play when i have an eye contact with my accompanist (sometimes) and the audiences 😂
not in this world does it weep as beautifully as a cello
Everyone in this whole orchestra is absolutely fantastic. Wow.
Easy all you have to do is practice 40 hrs a day
@DaFlower1 Lol it's a 2set Violin inside joke. I suggest you check them out.
@DaFlower1It would be possible on the planet Venus (probably best place for him).
I will need ling ling insurance for that.
Kkkkkkkkkkkkkk
Though Jascha Heifetz said, "If I don't practice one day, I know it; two days, the critics know it; three days, the public knows it", I think he had an even better understanding of it: "Practice like it means everything in the world to you. Perform like you don't give a damn." In other words, it's not how long one practices, but whether one practices with attention and intention. Quantity doesn't always produce quality.
Love how he first aknowledges the conductor and the other players, sublime interpretation
That's standard protocol
By far the best interpretation on TH-cam for me. I love rubato. Capucon is one of best cellists alive today. Incredible conducting and orchestral accompaniment too!
How much passion in Gautier’s playing...
This is the best rendition of the Saint-Seans Cello Concerto!
his way of playing Saint-Saens is so accurate to the style.
After watching this over hundreds of times, still absolutely stunning.
Beautiful music...Thank you!

Superlativamente bravo.
This guy truly played the concerto through his heart, so amazing!
Perfection 😍 like some flowers blooming in my head
Absolutely amazing!!
Great performance all around, love the cello's sound and balance with the orchestra.
I just noticed that subtle detail at 14:16, on the low C, he uses sympathetic vibrations to his advantage and adds a hint of vibrato to the sound through the 4th finger on the G string. Not quite sure on the specifics of the physics, but it definitely seems to work in varying the intensity of the note, even if it doesn't change the pitch as much as traditional vibrato.
Ah yes, quite. I'm also quite immensely educated on the sciences and stuff like that 🤥
I’m a violinist and I was taught to vibrate like that on open strings but I never knew why lol
It works because the note he’s fingering on the G string is also a C! It causes sympathetic vibrations in the overtone series
@@GlowSt_ck yes you're right
Fun fact: if you play the C on the G string and look at the C string you'll see it vibrate

Yes, my 1st Concerto as I recall, 1st year college. So nice to hear different artists online. Bravo.
did anybody see the tear come out of his eye? Truly an amazing cellist
I saw it!
what a beautiful performance!
Incredible talent. Probably my favourite classical piece, period. An excellent rendition of it, I loved every moment! Brilliant cellist. Impeccable.
The sound! SO GOOD!
Extremely well put together.
Perfekt left hand. Perfect cello, perfect Sound
In addition to the beauty of Saint-Saens' music, the HD quality of the video focuses one's attention also on visual details - which gave me the following thought.
This was in Frankfurt, a city by now famous for its ethnic diversity. Good to see all those different ethnicities proportionately represented in the audience&orchestra, enjoying the city's cultural life.
Oh wait, it's just the usual two (Europeans, East Asians).
Oh well... I guess we do still have some affordable street food by way of a cultural contribution from some of those other well-represented ethnicities in Frankfurt, for whom there were better things to do that night than to come to the Alte Oper to listen to some shmancy classical music. We should all still thank them for *that* contribution.
Such a heartfelt beautiful performance with sonority echoed right through the soul! Bravo!!
Such heartfelt and melodious playing. The Saint-Saens piece is gorgeous, the conductor and orchestra are perfect. I wish I could have been there to hear it in person. For now we must comfort ourselves with You Tube, for which I am grateful.
BRAVO !!!!!Absolutely breathtaking 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Wonderful ! Thank you !
Perfect playing by everyone. I like this concerto when it feels like both orchestra and cello are moving ahead in the same direction with great energy and conversing as equals. Here maybe it is a little slow, with ample buttering, tempo moving and pathos by the cellist for a 20 min concerto. Yet it does all seems to work in the end.
In this performance,
all is far suprior splendor,
especially,
the wonderfulness and comfort of his cello sound are off the charts, and beyond description.
Absolutely amazing performance ❤
Bravo!! so beautiful! very much enjoyed his interprepation!!

I am a new birn admirer of Gautier and i am already mersmerized of his skills. I wish i had known him 10 years ago. I love his music.
Camille always shines his light into the moral darkness.
I love that comment. Maybe we all should strive to shine a light into the moral dark universe. However we can. I just love this. I could spend pages writing about it. But I won't. That would be too narcissistic. I'll just listen in extacy.
Merci beaucoup
Very impressive and compelling playing.
Outstanding!
Mesmerizing beautiful 😍

Good to hear such a fine performance of this sometimes under-appreciated piece, one of the world's very finest cello concertos.

@@ligetisspaghetti5763 OK, take away Dvorak and Elgar, and probably Shostakovich 1. What else would you suggest, particularly from the romantic era? I would also count the Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations even though they aren't a true concerto. Even Tovey, no friend of Saint-Saens, praised this concerto highly.
@@iankemp1131 I don’t really like the romantic era. However I do highly recommend the Schnitkke Cello Concerto. One of the best pieces of music ever written.
@@ligetisspaghetti5763 Everyone to their own taste. As for Shostakovich himself, he considered the best ever cello concerto to be ... Saint-Saens No.1.
