    Also an ex-elite gymnast here, you nailed it for the most part. A lot of it comes from time under tension and straight arm pressing work. Pull-Ups/Push ups only do so much. Static holds, straight arm presses, and pushing your limits with time under tension is what really tears up the muscle fibers and builds those crazy lean muscles. Always pushing to failure then working past failure all while practicing good form.

      Hey-rings are awesome!! I am currently doing a mix of body weight/weights, and use rings every workout. One exercise not mentioned is rings vertical push-ups done in a completely inverted position. Don't expect to achieve that any time soon as it is an elite level move in terms of difficulty. I will likely start doing handstand push-ups on the floor using a wall for balance. They are also pretty hard.

    I've thought about this myself and the way I see it, where a bodybuilder will focus on lifting barbells, dumbbells, use machines and supplement with bodyweight exercises to "burn out", calisthenics athletes focus on bodyweight skills and will supplement with weights. My own approach is similar to power-bodybuilding: I treat isometric holds as my main strength movement, then use challenging variations of bodyweight moves to build muscle with a bodybuilding approach.

    I too use the rings in my workouts now, thanks to you.
    I can only do 3 sets of 10 reps each, so 30 reps on the ring dips, is this enough reps for hypertrophy?

    • @Taophysique
      @Taophysique  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      40-70 reps per session for each muscle group is enough for hypertrophy

    The concept that was alluded to but wasn't described explicitly is the concept of TORQUE, baby. You look at the weight you're pushing / pulling, but you also look at the LEVER ARM - the distance from whatever joint is doing the work to the point where the force is being applied. And take a PRODUCT of the two. It's a rotational thing, measured in foot pounds. Just to use an example. When you do planche, you look at the length of your arms between your shoulder joint and where you're pushing on the floor (2 feet) times the force you're pushing on your wrists - your weight if you're holding yourself up (150 pounds). You get 300 foot pounds of torque. 150 on each shoulder. If you did bench press by laying on your back, holding the bar underhanded around your waist with straight arms, and lifted it, or just isometrically held it with your arms 30 degrees above horizontal - with your friggin' body weight - that'd be a planche (You've actually still got shit your torso is doing to hold your body straight - but shoulder wise that'd be it). You can change intensity by reducing your lever arm. For a pulling example, if you have a way of putting the rings closer in to your body in the iron cross, like around your elbows. Obviously up near your armpits, it'd be easy. The torque is the product of your weight times your lever arm, if the rings are next to your armpits the distance from your shoulders is 3 inches, say. The torque you're resisting increases 100% every time you move the rings out another 3 inches - so doing it with the rings in your hands requires 6 times the torque or so). Like, I'm not particularly strong, but if I put the bar on my forearms right next to my elbows, I can do a slow bar muscle up.
    If you make a lever with a strong stick and some fulchrum - point you're rotating the stick about - you can move some heavy ass shit, by prying it. You apply a small force through a long distance; at the other end you get a large force moving through a small distance. It's worse for gymnastics because you're not just prying on the stick - you're the stick too - you're elbows are being stressed out. Imagine you're prying with a stick - it's easy to brake shovel handles if you use them to pry with. You're elbows are the stick. So take care not to fuck yourself up - start slow, warm up, etc.
    Weight lifters usually aren't torquing shit.

      I’m 18 man, and I’m gonna start out soon! You can get into any profession no matter what age (as long as you’re physically capable). You just have to accept the fact that you haven’t been doing it as long as other people in that class have, and you’re just going to have to work twice as hard to get to a good level. Keep that in mind, understand your mind and body and you can conquer anything!

    Great explanation dude! I have been training with rings for almost 5 months now and I can say it is noticeable the improvement in aesthetics and strenght. Definitely more challenging than the bar. I will try your program and also maybe will include some negative rings muscle ups and a few other things. I dont want to go to the gym so I will be trying to translate those weighted exercises into their calisthenics equivalents (Military press = Handstand Push Ups , Deadlift= Upside Down Deadlifts on rings, etc) , For the case of legs I will incorporate explosive concentric and slow-controlled eccentric through every rep since I wont have access to additional weight
