We must keep in mind that Sepideh has hardly said a word about Gen Q, especially her departure from the series. It's like if she had disengaged from the show, then she could have kept quiet. However, she retweeted the news quickly, as if she enjoyed it. Ilene knows and admires Sepideh. They have worked together before. She was the one who brought Sepi to Gen Q. Then there was that freak interview where Marja said "she created Sepideh." Clearly something happened and no one was happy with Sepi's departure. I'm not saying that Sepideh is going to be a part of the new reboot (it would be great if happens) but I do feel that there was a kind of enjoyment in sharing the news.

Great news! I just knew the minute Ilene and Jennifer did the joint interview and S3 showing in SF that they were not going to let MLR drag the legacy down any further and had something cooking. In the OGs we trust. Even if all the GQ cast make appearances it's a win-win for everyone. It will have better writing, showrunning, directing and editing so it's still a win for all.

I hope they make it like Gen Q was just a fever dream and was a weird alternate universe or something. I'd like to keep JB, Laurel H, KM, and Leisha H if at all possible with the opportunity to bring back Rachel, Holland, Cybil, and Pam. That would be my dream and some happy moments, friendship, intensity, everything we love and adore from the original. And a special request to bring the OG music producer as well it was so so necessary.

Let’s face it, Bette & Tina ARE the LWord. They are the lead actors, period. Many, many people watched the OG and GenQ strictly because of them. And you are correct, the highest GenQ ratings were the B&T episodes, followed by the Dani/Gigi episodes (although that turned out to be a lot short-lived relationship.) GenQ wasted the opportunity to fully use the OG characters, especially Alice and Shane. Alice’s character was funny and sexy in S1, but after that, they just made her sad and lonely. And Shane…augghhh. She was trapped in an unhappy relationship with Tess, who basically ignored her then started drinking again. Shane bought the second bar to try and rescue their relationship even though it was a bad business decision. Then when Shane tried to pitch an alternate use for it as a hair salon, Tess went postal on her! It’s like almost every GenQ character in S3 got a personality transplant (Gigi, Dani, Micah, Maribel, Sophie & Tess). Finley ended up looking like the sane and mature one of the bunch! What an incredible F-up that all started when (think about it) Sophie cheated on Dani with Finley in late S1/early S2. It broke up that friend group and the writers never seemed able to figure out a way to fix the problem.
genuinely Carrie was one of three characters from the new gen that i didn't completely hate. the old cast needs t be part of it. i don't trust them to write good characters. unless they do go back to the old creators
This is the best possible outcome. It was probably a huge red flag to Paramount that hardly anyone was campaigning for a GenQ 4th season. So they must be thrilled to see the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the news of TLWNY and Ilene returning to helm its development. It’s nice to actually have something to look forward to and the endless possibilities for the new cast. I can’t wait for your updates and bts intel!
I am so happy they are rebooting. there is so much story they can tell. with the OGs. bettes mom Tina background. Shane bring back Carmen. Alice and Tasha rebuilding their relationship. Helena there is alot to tell still.

Thanks for the update Ash. Ilene Chaiken should have time and as she is friends with Jennifer, a new reboot with new and interesting relevant storylines will work. GQ was uneven and dull in many ways and sure done correctly will be what we need. I watched firstly as I love Jennifer Beals as she has proven what quality looks like. Your ideas on casting those we loved from the original and some hand picked from the GQ is good as once again we have a huge void in lesbian wlw content with all the cancellations. I think the choice to set the new show in NY creates the opportunity to erase genQ and instead make it a direct follow on from the original because at the end B&T we’re moving to NY and there is no reason that the other OGs couldn’t have moved there in the following years.

Hey Ash! I was actually online last night & got a notification about the GenQ cancellation. I wasn’t a bit surprised given how bad S3 had gone. But to my delight, I read about the new project The L Word: New York with Ilene Chaiken being involved and it being an “extension” of the OG series! Best news I’ve gotten in a long time. I share your hope that they will bring back fan favorites like Carmen, Helena, and perhaps the popular characters from GenQ (Carrie, Misty, Gigi) and of course Bette, Tina, Shane, Alice & Angie. But most importantly the series will have the OG vibe that fans have come to expect from the LWord. With Ilene Chaiken involved as the creator (and I wish as the show runner, but at this point I’ll take a COMPETENT one) this new series has huge potential. It already has a dedicated world-wide fan base, so all it has to do is deliver a decent WLW product. Surely Ilene Chaiken and company can figure out how to do that. @jessxnyc
I don't know how it works with Creator vs showrunner, but I'm surprised that Ilene did not try to swoop in and rescue GQ when it was clear it was tanking in season 2. Could she only give input but had no authority on the direction of where the show was going?

But in listening to Ash’s podcasts, it sounds like Ilene was only able give input on GenQ and the ShowRunner & the network (Showtime) made the final decisions on the actual writing and editing of the episodes, which as we saw, was abysmal. So, now the hope is that the failure of GenQ is a big lesson learned in what the core audience really wants and expects. Thus, the wiping of the slate clean and the new direction to go back to a format which is more like the original LWord.
NO WAY!!!! I can't believe you are this channel!!! I love your Theranos commentary and couldn't believe you covered one of my favourite shows!!! I recognised your voice straight away!!! I just binged season 3 and my biggest peeve was Shane's hair do throughout the season... I kept wanting her funky hair dos from L Word back rather than the rather unflattering flat hair she wore while trying to get a hair salon going again! Finlay is actually my fave along with Shane and Alice. Bette and Tina I have found a bit boring after L Word Original. Obviously not happy about the cliff hangers that I hope will be revisited if they make New York.
No Tess won’t be included in the reboot, because Tess was one of the reason why the ratings dropped & fans stopped watching. Fans wanted Shane & Carmen. Martha created Tess & Jamie Clayton can’t act 😶 That horrible voice. The character was beyond annoying & ruined Bette & Tina’s wedding 🤨🙄

The reboot has to be a special breed and not a continuation of original L Word because Bette&Tina plus OGs have spiked that ball and walked off the field.
Ash really should be some sort of an advisor or fact-checker. Or timeline checker. She could fill any number of useful roles - for real. There aren’t many people that know the LWord as she does, but beyond that she understands how character arcs in television series are mapped out. She could definitely help a production company.

So happy with this news!!! Hard core fans deserve to have the most relevant OGs back in the series, and obviously Ilene Chaiken leading the Tribe. It was painful to watch Gen Q debacle led by infamous Marja. I hope she get exiles to Katmandhu. Rose Troche should be the showrunner, in my opinion. Helena with her delicious accent and Carmen with her hyper sexiness, would be a great come back. Leisha and Kate are a must. And obviously Jennifer Beals. New blood is also necessary, so looking forward to the new additions. But, most importantly, the storylines and plots must be relevant.
The only good things about Gen Q was the diverse casting and Gigi. They need characters with substance, developed story lines and a room of proven writers!
I hope tney listen to Ash. She has the science of why Q was a disaster. Bette can never be replaced but a new unknown character might fulfill the void of a new L Word.
Lead characters are going to need acting chops because Jennifer set the bar high. She put her signature on this series. Chaiken must know that and also reach new heights in imagination because after Q...we will recognize the bs when we see it and cancel the show ourselves.
Do you think the OGs from Gen Q will be involved in the new show as characters, though? Kate's IG story really felt like a goodbye to Shane (and a fuck you to Marja lol). I'd assumed it would be all new characters again. 🤔 While I personally loved Tess, Finley and Dani, I don't really see how they can get them into a story set in New York. Like, maybe Dani could move to work with Bette or something and she's reunited with Gigi/they retcon the break up or something, maybe. But I don't see how it works for anyone else. Not even sure how they'd get Alice and Shane there either tbh. If it is a reboot with the OGs and completely scrapping Gen Q, then I hope Jenny and Kit are brought back. I am a huge Beals and Holloman fan. I would love to see them come back in their original roles. Gen Q was a disaster as far as the OG story lines went. All this crap on representation means nothing when the writing and the story lines are nothing but romantic relationships which fall apart in an episode or two. How about some successful relationships and some happiness for some LGBTQ+ characters for a change. How about some people who know who they are as people and do not struggle so much with finding their identity. How about some real friendships like in the original. And if the powers that be decide on totally new cast and characters, I'm good with that. Just select the best actor for the part just as you did in the original... stop writing for the actor but make the actor step up to the part. I am looking for some positive examples of our community and not just people who look good or have some label to check the box. It's nice if they are attractive (Beals and Holloman), but they need solid story lines and more dialogue... and cut down on the number of characters and give each story line an adequate amount to time on screen so we know who they are. And cut out the guest characters who are on only to be seen and have no contribution to the story line. And cut the cheating and drug use down a whole lot, please. And give every character a back story which will explain who they are. And for god's sake (in honor of Ash) turn on the damn lights so we can see what is going on. Thanks Ash.
Can’t agree more. We need to be represented by strong, positive women. You know, like the real people we know that are out there every day busting their a$$es to to succeed in their careers, in their relationships, and that struggle with family relationships, finances, etc. Women who are leaders, women who will stand up up to bullies, women who are competitive, women who are smart and hard-working. Professionals, blue-collar workers, entrepreneurs. These women make up the fabric of our beautiful, diverse community. This “silent majority” doesn’t typically comment on social media message boards such as this for a variety of reasons…but exists, and is the living and breathing heartbeat of the WLW community.

This is exactly what needed to happen! I had lost all interest in the show after 2 episodes of the third season. Marja's interview on Jess' channel shined a bright light on one of the root causes of why the Gen Q show tanked. I cancelled my subscription after that abysmal finale. I am beyond excited that they have not given up on the L Word and whether the OGs are in it or not, I will receive this new show with open arms! I cannot wait to see the direction in which Ilene takes this reboot. I can totally see Bette, Shane, Dani, GG, Helena and Rosie thriving in a NYC locale. I do think this show needs to be focused on a new younger cast for longevity, and because the OGs are older and settled and may not have as much drama going on in their lives from a story telling perspective. However, I am totally open to anything as long as we have a well developed show with good writers and people who care. Illene cares!!! Thank you Paramount for having faith and keeping the L Word legacy alive!!!!

Haven’t seen season 3 yet , besides the previews here and there. Unfortunately in the Netherlands no option to see it. But: very happen to hear Ilene Chaiken is getting back in control🎉. Original L word was magnificent, loved it and it was the talk of the week back then. Hope to see the return of Bette, Tina, Helena, Shane, Alice, Gigi and that beautiful woman who played the Photographer. Dylan? Make the generation that was addicted to the L word addicted again 😊😊
Yeah..I think it was wild and inappropriate to show Tess getting on drugs solely for the reason that fentanyl is a literal huge issue right now in real life. Wildly inappropriate. The characters took huge swings in their character development in the end of gen q lol.
If no one is going to say it, then I will. Gen Q was crap because it was 70% not even about lesbians and the LGB community was sick of it. It's the same with the new queer as folk show, absolutelycrap. It's now mainly all about non binary and trans which again most gay men were pissed off at. The l word was popular because it was actually about lesbians. Most shows that are casting all these new identity crap characters are getting very little views. The biggest problem is eliminating lesbians with the new shows coming out. Hence why the show GAP and the show stupid wife are extremely popular because theres no characters trying to shove a delusional narrative down our throtes. Hopefully this is a lesson to all producers out there 😊
Tasha and Alice were great, but I think Alice would do great with someone who could bring more quirky, funny and light-hearted humor into the relationship. That's when Alice's character shines (eg. The lesbian man she was dating, the vampire, and Papi). The scenes with Tasha mostly had them fighting or disagreeing. The woman who plays Tasha is super funny and has an infectious laugh. I love her. I think if they could bring a bit more of that into her character, it would be great!
The original characters was the reason why most people were watching Generation Q. Sorry Gen Q, but the majority don't want the storyline. You all had a great run though. The OG's are the bread and butter.
About GINI, If TLWNY is a reboot of the original, I think logically there should be no Gini. It is assumed that in the universe of the reboot in NY, Gen Q never existed. Gini would be a continuation of Gen Q, not a reboot of the original🤔. Also, I think there may be a conflict over ownership and authorship of the characters, since Dani and Gigi were theoretically created by Marja and she could claim the rights? But it is possible to use both actresses with new characters. That is the hope I have. Hopefully at least Sepi, who lives in NY, is part of the new project and as a more central character.

Have faith ReRe. After the absolute roasting that MLR got after the finale of GenQ the handwriting was on the wall for her and her terrible experiment. She may have had good intentions, but she tried to do too much in too little time. It turned out to be a nonsensical mess. And the fact the she and her inexperienced writers didn’t know the history of the LWord was the death blow. I don’t think she or any of them (the writers) will be allowed any where near the new project.
Oh, I'm not worried about MLR. Showtime and CBS are about viewers and subscribers. Money is always the name of the game 😏. I will wait and hope that the development will see the light of day for all of us who love The L word 🙏🏽💞

It can be a reason for the network to invest in the project, or the reverse can be true - the network can expect a series in it’s pilot era to bring in big dividends or else. I think that’s what you’re worried about. I’ve got a feeling that if the LWord returns to a format similar to the original and brings more OGs back, it will be a smash hit. The world-wide audience is ready and waiting.

Unfortunately that ship has sailed, any co-parenting would be in the OG L Word. Angie is grown now and they don't even live in the same country. They really dropped the ball on that bc I think most of the fans wanted to see Angie/Tina/Bette in a loving home.

I hope they make it like Gen Q was just a fever dream and was a weird alternate universe or something. I'd like to keep JB, Laurel H, KM, and Leisha H if at all possible with the opportunity to bring back Rachel, Holland, Cybil, and Pam. That would be my dream and some happy moments, friendship, intensity, everything we love and adore from the original. And a special request to bring the OG music producer as well it was so so necessary.

For people that don't want to see the OGs in this new reboot.... like are they high? Then don't watch The L Word. There's other WLW shows to watch. I mean the disrespectful vibe to the OGs is so unnecessary. The OGs are part of the draw and legacy of the show. Have some respect. They want to benefit from the legacy of The L Word but don't want OGs, please have several seats. This is great news Illene got her show back. Because it was being run into the ground with that other woman. Hopefully they take the best parts of Gen Q with them ie Gigi

Let’s face it, Bette & Tina ARE the LWord. They are the lead actors, period. Many, many people watched the OG and GenQ strictly because of them. And you are correct, the highest GenQ ratings were the B&T episodes, followed by the Dani/Gigi episodes (although that turned out to be a lot short-lived relationship.) GenQ wasted the opportunity to fully use the OG characters, especially Alice and Shane. Alice’s character was funny and sexy in S1, but after that, they just made her sad and lonely. And Shane…augghhh. She was trapped in an unhappy relationship with Tess, who basically ignored her then started drinking again. Shane bought the second bar to try and rescue their relationship even though it was a bad business decision. Then when Shane tried to pitch an alternate use for it as a hair salon, Tess went postal on her! It’s like almost every GenQ character in S3 got a personality transplant (Gigi, Dani, Micah, Maribel, Sophie & Tess). Finley ended up looking like the sane and mature one of the bunch! What an incredible F-up that all started when (think about it) Sophie cheated on Dani with Finley in late S1/early S2. It broke up that friend group and the writers never seemed able to figure out a way to fix the problem.
genuinely Carrie was one of three characters from the new gen that i didn't completely hate. the old cast needs t be part of it. i don't trust them to write good characters. unless they do go back to the old creators
This is the best possible outcome. It was probably a huge red flag to Paramount that hardly anyone was campaigning for a GenQ 4th season. So they must be thrilled to see the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the news of TLWNY and Ilene returning to helm its development. It’s nice to actually have something to look forward to and the endless possibilities for the new cast. I can’t wait for your updates and bts intel!

Thanks for the update Ash. Ilene Chaiken should have time and as she is friends with Jennifer, a new reboot with new and interesting relevant storylines will work. GQ was uneven and dull in many ways and sure done correctly will be what we need. I watched firstly as I love Jennifer Beals as she has proven what quality looks like.
Your ideas on casting those we loved from the original and some hand picked from the GQ is good as once again we have a huge void in lesbian wlw content with all the cancellations. The young ones don't know how easy it is for them today compared with what gen x like me had to go thru. Here's hoping a fresh start will be the winning ticket; hi from Melbourne, Australia.

Sara, Pam & Rachael have been asking to come back since the GenQ reboot. Don’t know what they can do about Pam unless they go back in time (since they stupidly killed her off in GenQ) but maybe they can figure something out.

Well, the KARMA that I talked about a long time ago saying just sit back and watch what will happen after the writers and showrunner upset Jennifer so much that she decided to leave the show and then they also lost Sephi and of course Laurel also… The editing and deleting of all of the Tibette scenes as well as the disrespect of the OG’s as well as the fans and the representation of gay women through those writers and the bus drivers eyes was an embarrassment..Not to mention the ridiculous ridiculous storylines…

I think the choice to set the new show in NY creates the opportunity to erase genQ and instead make it a direct follow on from the original because at the end B&T we’re moving to NY and there is no reason that the other OGs couldn’t have moved there in the following years.

Hey Ash! I was actually online last night & got a notification about the GenQ cancellation. I wasn’t a bit surprised given how bad S3 had gone.
But to my delight, I read about the new project The L Word: New York with Ilene Chaiken being involved and it being an “extension” of the OG series! Best news I’ve gotten in a long time. I share your hope that they will bring back fan favorites like Carmen, Helena, and perhaps the popular characters from GenQ (Carrie, Misty, Gigi) and of course Bette, Tina, Shane, Alice & Angie. But most importantly the series will have the OG vibe that fans have come to expect from the LWord. With Ilene Chaiken involved as the creator (and I wish as the show runner, but at this point I’ll take a COMPETENT one) this new series has huge potential. It already has a dedicated world-wide fan base, so all it has to do is deliver a decent WLW product. Surely Ilene Chaiken and company can figure out how to do that.

I don't know how it works with Creator vs showrunner, but I'm surprised that Ilene did not try to swoop in and rescue GQ when it was clear it was tanking in season 2. Could she only give input but had no authority on the direction of where the show was going?

But in listening to Ash’s podcasts, it sounds like Ilene was only able give input on GenQ and the ShowRunner & the network (Showtime) made the final decisions on the actual writing and editing of the episodes, which as we saw, was abysmal.
So, now the hope is that the failure of GenQ is a big lesson learned in what the core audience really wants and expects. Thus, the wiping of the slate clean and the new direction to go back to a format which is more like the original LWord.

I just binged season 3 and my biggest peeve was Shane's hair do throughout the season... I kept wanting her funky hair dos from L Word back rather than the rather unflattering flat hair she wore while trying to get a hair salon going again! Finlay is actually my fave along with Shane and Alice. Bette and Tina I have found a bit boring after L Word Original. Obviously not happy about the cliff hangers that I hope will be revisited if they make New York.

Ash really should be some sort of an advisor or fact-checker. Or timeline checker. She could fill any number of useful roles - for real. There aren’t many people that know the LWord as she does, but beyond that she understands how character arcs in television series are mapped out. She could definitely help a production company.

So happy with this news!!! Hard core fans deserve to have the most relevant OGs back in the series, and obviously Ilene Chaiken leading the Tribe. It was painful to watch Gen Q debacle led by infamous Marja. I hope she get exiles to Katmandhu. Rose Troche should be the showrunner, in my opinion. Helena with her delicious accent and Carmen with her hyper sexiness, would be a great come back. Leisha and Kate are a must. And obviously Jennifer Beals. New blood is also necessary, so looking forward to the new additions. But, most importantly, the storylines and plots must be relevant.
The only good things about Gen Q was the diverse casting and Gigi. They need characters with substance, developed story lines and a room of proven writers!

While I personally loved Tess, Finley and Dani, I don't really see how they can get them into a story set in New York. Like, maybe Dani could move to work with Bette or something and she's reunited with Gigi/they retcon the break up or something, maybe. But I don't see how it works for anyone else. Not even sure how they'd get Alice and Shane there either tbh.

I am a huge Beals and Holloman fan. I would love to see them come back in their original roles. Gen Q was a disaster as far as the OG story lines went. All this crap on representation means nothing when the writing and the story lines are nothing but romantic relationships which fall apart in an episode or two. How about some successful relationships and some happiness for some LGBTQ+ characters for a change. How about some people who know who they are as people and do not struggle so much with finding their identity. How about some real friendships like in the original. And if the powers that be decide on totally new cast and characters, I'm good with that. Just select the best actor for the part just as you did in the original... stop writing for the actor but make the actor step up to the part. I am looking for some positive examples of our community and not just people who look good or have some label to check the box. It's nice if they are attractive (Beals and Holloman), but they need solid story lines and more dialogue... and cut down on the number of characters and give each story line an adequate amount to time on screen so we know who they are. And cut out the guest characters who are on only to be seen and have no contribution to the story line. And cut the cheating and drug use down a whole lot, please. And give every character a back story which will explain who they are. And for god's sake (in honor of Ash) turn on the damn lights so we can see what is going on. Thanks Ash.
Can’t agree more. We need to be represented by strong, positive women. You know, like the real people we know that are out there every day busting their a$$es to to succeed in their careers, in their relationships, and that struggle with family relationships, finances, etc. Women who are leaders, women who will stand up up to bullies, women who are competitive, women who are smart and hard-working. Professionals, blue-collar workers, entrepreneurs.
These women make up the fabric of our beautiful, diverse community. This “silent majority” doesn’t typically comment on social media message boards such as this for a variety of reasons…but exists, and is the living and breathing heartbeat of the WLW community.

This is exactly what needed to happen! I had lost all interest in the show after 2 episodes of the third season. Marja's interview on Jess' channel shined a bright light on one of the root causes of why the Gen Q show tanked. I cancelled my subscription after that abysmal finale. I am beyond excited that they have not given up on the L Word and whether the OGs are in it or not, I will receive this new show with open arms! I cannot wait to see the direction in which Ilene takes this reboot. I can totally see Bette, Shane, Dani, GG, Helena and Rosie thriving in a NYC locale. I do think this show needs to be focused on a new younger cast for longevity, and because the OGs are older and settled and may not have as much drama going on in their lives from a story telling perspective. However, I am totally open to anything as long as we have a well developed show with good writers and people who care. Illene cares!!! Thank you Paramount for having faith and keeping the L Word legacy alive!!!!

Yeah..I think it was wild and inappropriate to show Tess getting on drugs solely for the reason that fentanyl is a literal huge issue right now in real life. Wildly inappropriate. The characters took huge swings in their character development in the end of gen q lol.

If no one is going to say it, then I will. Gen Q was crap because it was 70% not even about lesbians and the LGB community was sick of it. It's the same with the new queer as folk show, absolutelycrap. It's now mainly all about non binary and trans which again most gay men were pissed off at. The l word was popular because it was actually about lesbians. Most shows that are casting all these new identity crap characters are getting very little views. The biggest problem is eliminating lesbians with the new shows coming out. Hence why the show GAP and the show stupid wife are extremely popular because theres no characters trying to shove a delusional narrative down our throtes. Hopefully this is a lesson to all producers out there 😊

Tasha and Alice were great, but I think Alice would do great with someone who could bring more quirky, funny and light-hearted humor into the relationship. That's when Alice's character shines (eg. The lesbian man she was dating, the vampire, and Papi). The scenes with Tasha mostly had them fighting or disagreeing. The woman who plays Tasha is super funny and has an infectious laugh. I love her. I think if they could bring a bit more of that into her character, it would be great!

The original characters was the reason why most people were watching Generation Q. Sorry Gen Q, but the majority don't want the storyline. You all had a great run though. The OG's are the bread and butter.
About GINI, If TLWNY is a reboot of the original, I think logically there should be no Gini.
It is assumed that in the universe of the reboot in NY, Gen Q never existed. Gini would be a continuation of Gen Q, not a reboot of the original🤔.
Also, I think there may be a conflict over ownership and authorship of the characters, since Dani and Gigi were theoretically created by Marja and she could claim the rights?
But it is possible to use both actresses with new characters. That is the hope I have.
Hopefully at least Sepi, who lives in NY, is part of the new project and as a more central character.

Have faith ReRe. After the absolute roasting that MLR got after the finale of GenQ the handwriting was on the wall for her and her terrible experiment. She may have had good intentions, but she tried to do too much in too little time. It turned out to be a nonsensical mess. And the fact the she and her inexperienced writers didn’t know the history of the LWord was the death blow. I don’t think she or any of them (the writers) will be allowed any where near the new project.
Oh, I'm not worried about MLR. Showtime and CBS are about viewers and subscribers. Money is always the name of the game 😏. I will wait and hope that the development will see the light of day for all of us who love The L word 🙏🏽💞

It can be a reason for the network to invest in the project, or the reverse can be true - the network can expect a series in it’s pilot era to bring in big dividends or else. I think that’s what you’re worried about. I’ve got a feeling that if the LWord returns to a format similar to the original and brings more OGs back, it will be a smash hit.
