Doing research before I buy. Good info here bro. I’ve been fishing since I could crawl, but I’m getting serious about learning to read lakes and do efficient work when I’m on the water. Upgrading tools cost money, but time is money.
I run an old Eagle fishmark 320, suits my needs just fine and was dirt cheap Lowrance technology. I'd love to get side imaging but can't justify the cost. GPS, lake maps, weather, etc is my cell phone lol. Marker buoys are my hotspot waypoints. I would pose the point that the biggest benefit for fancy integrated units is if you fish a lot of unfamiliar water. Depth, temp, and ability to read weeds or rocks or not is all you need.
took my fishmark 480 on a Canada trip back in the day. Worked great. Never found anything that made better arches. Had lots of newer units but that 480 was good. the 320 is close to it.
Nice video. In addition to the great clarity of both down imaging and side imaging the navigation is incredibly useful. I bought a used boat last Fall that has a Helix 12 SI. The boat also has a Minnkota Ultrex. The two units are linked with fabulous results. I can use “spot lock” to hold my boat in a small gps defined position that eliminates the need to anchor. Adding way points to steer the boat along structure allows me to concentrate on fishing rather than steering. I also use it for steering my boat well trolling with the 15 horse trolling motor doing the actual pushing. I have been fishing for 45 years and nothing has changed the game for me as much as the Humminbird.
Thank you for your information. I am very new to kayak fishing and interested in getting a fish finder. It would be appreciated if you could add pictures of what you are trying to describe seeing how I am unfamiliar with almost everything that you are talking about. Looking forward to seeing your next video

I will recommend any unit that has side imagining and gps. 7 inch screen too. You need to find brush piles. Its hard to do with a smaller screen and with out side imagining. Spend the most you can.

Great vid, thanks for doing one on fish finders. For the second vid could you talk about various humminbird transducers, sizes and powers you would recommend for a kayak. And perhaps transducer placement mounting for SI on a kayak as well? Since the transducers vary depending on model I’d be curious on how that would effect what could be mounted properly.
First I want to say that I greatly appreciate the fact that you still reply to viewer's questions and comments. Especially after having over 17K subscribers. Secondly, after close examination of finders under roughly $700, I was stuck between Hummingbird Helix 7 w/mega imaging and Raymarine Element 7HV, which also has 1.2ghz (mega) imaging and the 3D imaging. I chose the latter because I didn't want touchscreen on a kayak and 3D was intriguing. How would you compare the two of them? Side note: Lowrance was my 3rd choice, but only because it doesn't have 1.2ghz.

After watching SEVERAL videos regarding fish finders I have come to respect your opinions. I have settled on the Humminbird Helix 8 CHIRP MEGA DI GPS G3N GPS Fishfinder/Chartplotter. Is this going to do most everything an amateur fisherman will need ?
You should get the "MSI" model so you won't out grow it. Side imagining is more expensive but worth its weight. But that model you picked is pretty good for a first timers units.
Is the Helix 7 capable of having an external GPS in order to add cardinal directions to the GPS mapping? If so, is there anything you would recommend. I plan to buy a Helix 7 based off of your review. It sounds like exactly what I need. Adding Cardinal directions to the mapping system would be great.
helix 7 can accept an external gps antenna. I had to do some special wiring for my GEN2 helix 7. GEN3 might be OK. reference my video on adding exteranl gps to helix 7
Hola. Thank you for the explanation. Okay, I bought a used 22” Sea Pro here in Baja Sur by the Sea of Cortez. The boat has old-old Garmin fish finder (no GPS). I have Lawrence for my kayak, but I want to step up for the boat. What level of Hummingbird do I need to obtain side image and internal GPS? I am fishing saltwater, so is there something I need to be aware of what model is best. Depths here can go crazy deep. Also - how about navigation? I heard Hummingbird does not have navigation software for Sea of Cortez? Thank you. I want to make a purchase very soon. GRACIAS! Also, I expect the transducer and wiring comes with the unit? Or, is that more?
My humming bird helix 7 can ready to 150ft with the standard transducer. If you need more deeper, Humminbird has a exchange program for standard transducer to extra deep transducer. i think at minimum you should get an 8 inch screen Helix 8. Any model that says "SI" or "MSI" has side imagining. everything you need will come with the unit.
