This was one of my favorite rides at SFGAm even though it was pretty rough. You could see this enormous steel ride miles away from the park. I remember how much I loved driving up to SFGAm and seeing Shockwave greet guests with its intense layout.
It had a couple rough transitions and uncomfortable restraints, but the ride was iconic. It took the first few loops at lightning speed and the swooping first drop stood like a monument by the front gate. Replacing a pure adrenaline machine like this with an uninspired flying coaster was a crime.
I rode this coaster as a teenager. I only rode it once. The ride was extremely rough, I had a terrible headache the rest of the day. But just looking at it from the ground the coaster was an impressive sight to behold.
Ahh, the memories of Shockwave. I loved it so much that I wrote an essay in my English Composition class about it - my teacher liked how I described going through the first loop.
Man, I see this video and think to myself "Wow, I wish Viper ran like this!"... and then I remember that much of the reason Viper is still in existence today probably stems from the fact that it's been running with the brakes turned up to 11 since the mid 90s LOL... these old Arrows weren't designed to last being ran so fast! But I do wish that I could experience the insanity just once!
I went on a class trip in 93" avoided this ride because it was so ominous to me returned in 02' it was my first ride what a rush it's everything they said it would be !!
They really should’ve kept this coaster for a bit longer, perhaps until around the late 2000’s. That Superman flying coaster could’ve just waited a bit longer TBH.
This one was rough from the year it opened in 1988 until it was taken down in late 2002 for Superman: Ultimate Flight's debut the next season... Worst part was right after the third loop when it righted itself up the small uphill turn before the run towards the boomerang...
Hey! I heard that Shockwave had several issues during its lifetime. Not only did it have problems with the wheels, but it was also widely criticized for being a rough and painful ride. The turn after the third loop became the most infamous part of the ride. Also, passengers had to remove their earrings before boarding the train.
Kennywood Park had similar issues with the Steel Phantom. Too many riders experienced a painful ride. The Steel Phantom was re-worked without loops into the Phantom's Revenge which has earned high marks from coaster enthusiasts.
I remember Shockwave for being especially painful- the one and only time I rode it as a teen, I got severe whiplash. I never went on it again and I was really pleased to see it removed.
Shock Wave has a sister ride, it's Viper at Six Flags Magic Mountain. It is the same ride but painted red. It opened in 1990. I've been on it, it's just as painful as Shockwave was.
But I saw black stripes as the demon, the demon’s red train and yellow train had black stripes, the black train had a orange stripe, and shockwave had blue stripes.
Hi, I'm making a video about the history and demise of world record breaking roller coasters. Would I be able to use a few short clips from this video within my own? I'll make sure to credit you both at the end of the video and link to your video in its description. Many thanks, Harry
They take out amazing stuff like this and then wonder why people complain they don't have a solid Top 5/five really "great" coasters well maybe (and just like six flags great adventure did later) don't remove the parking lot eye candy view of a giant monster of a machine then???
It was the era of nylon shorts. Also, a time when you paid for things with currency & coins. Before boarding, look under the seat cushions (held on only with velcro). Usually a few quarters could be found!.....................We said the ride paid dividends!
Hi Jeff, you've got some fantastic historic footage on your channel. Would you mind if I used some of the footage in a video I'm putting together? Full credit to you will be given of course. Specificaly I was hoping to use some shots of Shockwave, Great american scream machine..

So cool. Those operations look great as well.
I was just thinking that

Great footage. Trims are almost completely open on the midcourse and an efficient three train operation.
May I use this footage in a video I'm making about the evolution of the world's tallest roller coaster? I will give your channel full credit.
Sure, look forward to it as always
@@coasterjeff2664 Hi again! May I use this footage again in a video about this coaster's history?
@@ThemeParkCrazy of course

Im 39 and I been on the coaster when I was 8 years old! WOW! memories!
i knew this one was coming soon. Thank you SOOOO MUCH!!

One of my favorite roller coaster only ridden it twice, but love the memories of seeing this ride whenever I went to Six Flags Great America.

The inversion of the boomerang that you mentioned. It's call the Batwing Inversion.
Hey Jeff, can I use this footage in an upcoming video? I'll provide full credit as always
This is one of the best vidz I've seen! Was my #1 and always will be!
Loved this coaster. On a slow day I rode 8 times in a row. I was sad to see it leave.
My childhood. I thought this coaster was the biggest thing ever and had to wait years to meet the height requirement. Nostalgia 🥰🥰🥰
Ahhhhh the good old days! Remember it very well!

My firends dad operated shocke wave and he never told us story's of removing earings

That turn would have probably been thrilling if not for the shoulder restraints digging into your neck.
I don't think I was tall enough to ride this until the mid '90s, and I didn't really appreciate it until they started talking about getting rid of it.
Thanks so much for sharing videos of my home park! ☺️
I lovvvvve this! Good memories! Look at that thing fly through the mid course breaks...
vintage coaster footage is the best
THANKS FOR SHARING!!!! 🙌 🙌
Makes my head hurt just watching this 😆 such a rough coaster
Wow that looked so intense with hardly any trims
*Beautiful*
This coaster was one you most definitely felt.
Shock Wave has a sister ride, it's Viper at Six Flags Magic Mountain. It is the same ride but painted red. It opened in 1990. I've been on it, it's just as painful as Shockwave was.
Viper and Shockwave both have a different layout ...
Viper is similar but it’s definitely less violent which is why Viper still operates and this doesn’t.
This and GASM had identical layouts
But I saw black stripes as the demon, the demon’s red train and yellow train had black stripes, the black train had a orange stripe, and shockwave had blue stripes.
Rare footage of a great forgotten coaster. Viper @sfmm is all thats left.
I just love that brake noise
💙I Will Always Love And Miss You Shockwave💙
Shockwave beat me up when I was a kid. Only rode it once or twice because it hurt.
That mid course brake didn’t really brake the train. I see blackout moment there
Hey, Coaster Jeff! Do you have a commercial for Drachen Fire at Busch Gardens Williamsburg?

Yes and I feel like if they gave this those comfortable vekoma trains or even vest restraints these megaloopers would have been epic
