I produce and sell my own ornaments, I don’t use POD. Fair warning, sample every POD ornament before you jump into this. Many of the POD suppliers do a poor job on the porcelain ornaments. I was not happy with print quality at all so I decided to keep making them myself with my own equipment.
I was going to say the same. Not sure if Heather ever got a sample, but when looking at POD companies I saw they all made a note to say that small details often can't be reproduced well and her ornament had a ton of small details!
I just started doing this and I have to say that of all the things I create this is one of the top fun ones! I am doing mine in different styles from hand painting to stickers, resin coated/natural wood, etc.. it's limitless and it's easy to profit because supplies are really minimal. It's a nice change of pace from creams & soaps, woodwork, resin, painting, candles and all the other stuff I do. Don't get me wrong, POD is fun too but at least for my local sales these ornaments are selling out faster than I can make them and I'm only 2 weeks in. I never dreamed this would be so popular.
Love your content. So informative as I am myself in the process of starting up with Printify and Etsy. Also, love your Amber glass lamp in the background... I have the same one 😊.
Thank you for another great video!! Could you explain a bit more about profit margins? Are you charging customers for shipping? On Printify I see that ornaments are $4-$6 but then with shipping they turn out to be about $10 -- with that and Etsy fees, etc. I'm wondering are you just keeping your price around $20 for profit or am I missing something? Thank you in advance!!
I love all your bloopers! And thank you for sharing. I never realized Etsy sellers did this. You were so informative and creative! Keep up the good work. Might try my hand at this. Were there any upfront costs for you?

I received samples of ornaments from Printed Mint. The glass was great. The ceramic seemed a little blurry. I have an ADU in my backyard, so I decided to create a print shop to do this myself to have the quality. The other factor is the lead time to produce the ornaments. How they do the volume ordered, I simply cannot understand but it seems to be a multi-million dollar business for them.

Great video, Heather! Going into 2023 and per your experience so far in POD, What are your thoughts on focussing on a single POD vertical like apparels(t-shirts, hoodies, socks) and then creating designs for multiple niches like sports and outdoor enthusiasts designs, dog dad and dog moms, baby & mom tees for this single POD vertical ? Or would you suggest sticking to only 1 niche rather like a POD store for dog owners and selling different POD items like tees, mugs, stickers, hoodies etc for multiple breeds and multiple designs on this store? Jessica I'm new too. I just typed up all my prices - because it's different for each color when you're doing sweatshirts using SwiftPOD. I first add up what is costs, plus shipping, plus the Etsy fees - and see how much the product is costing me - before I make a penny - and I figure my pricing from there - while trying to keep it in the range others are charging. T-shirts much easier to price.
@@cindyleinwand5062Thank you Cindy. So, you would suggest including shipping for your sweaters. The shipping is so high so I thought that was a good idea too. But my Mom thinks my prices are so high. I am pricing the sweaters at around $39.99. I have heard several other youtuber's suggest this price as well. I don't want to put a bunch of listings up though if there going to be too high priced.

Hi Heather! Thanks for this super helpful video! Question - on the final page of printify, the bill came to $14 but you said you could charge up to $14. I’m confused:) how would one make any margin on this?
Heather, the personalized ornaments: the shop owner designs the ornaments and sends their design to print on demand? Then when the ornament is ordered, print on demand prints it and ships it to the customer ? Thank you, Karen
Great video! But where do we find good mockups for ornaments? (Or any other product besides tshirts and mugs for that matter, lol!) I’m struggling to find good mockups and I feel like should I even bother with products that I am unable to have them for?
Heather, are you using Everbee for titles and tags as well? I've followed your sale samurai tutorial and love it, so do I have to use both software? I hope you can respond. Thanks!
If some one buys a product for a person as a gift through etsy but using printify to print item how do you include note in order for customer to know who gave it to them.
Hey Heather. Thanks for the great video. How in the world can we make any money charging only $10 bucks for these items??? Please respond - I'm an avid fan!
@Rachel Rae Laframboise, Those stores which are making money are selling them for about $25 each. Having said that, your net income will be less after subtracting the Printify and Etsy fees and the shipping costs.
Hi Heather, excellent video as always! Where did you get the circle you added in Canva? Was it an element from Canva? Also what made you use 5000x50000 if Printify specifically listed the dimensions. I’m still new to figuring out what dimensions to use.
I think that 5000x5000 works too because it's a bigger square and the printify dimensions are 975x975 which is square too. If it's not a square, like a mug, it's better to use the same dimensions like in printify to size the design correctly.
Would you mind sharing which sweatshirts to use for youth and toddlers that do NOT have a hoodie? I would like to offer mommy and me sweatshirts but dont find the fitting kids sweatshirt.
How would we add this to our etsy shop? If this is not intended for etsy , how would we generate traffic to our printify page? I guess that's my fear- not generating large amount of customers.
Sounds great, but by the time you pay all the fees and production($15 plus Etsy fees) then you are left with a small profit and you're priced high compared to competitors.
That's what I thought too - but then again if you sell a lot - and it gets people into your store - then they see other things you have for sale that might be better priced for you.
To stay within competition you would need Printify Premium and offer no free shipping. You could still compete by selling these for $15 to $20 and come out with a profit of $10+ [Breakdown is Printify Premium price for ceramic ornaments is 4.44 so if you sold for $14.99- $4.44 it'd be the 10.55 minus 1.174 (14.99 x .065= 0.974 + listing renewal fee of 0.20 which is total fees of 1.174) which is $9.38 profit in hopes the customer didn't have the processing fee, but still you'd come out with over $8+ profit per ornament. I've seen many sell for higher than $20 and I always give the advice that I would never sell the lowest in my competition nor the highest. I agree that this seller will win a good portion of competition but you can still sell many and earn a whole lot with just this one product. With that being said, I've sold many items that were $10 higher than my competition and make a full-time income off of my Etsy store so this long comment is just to say that I don't want anyone to be discouraged by competition and trying to have the lowest price. Many customers associate low price with low value and that is something I have found on my time on Etsy. There is a lot of marketing and pricing strategy that can still get customers just the same. The one thing to consider is that a store can have low profit margins and high sale volumes and earn 10K in profit, but another store can sell half the amount of items but double their profit margins and still earn 10K in profit. I would know this only because I've done that on product types, haha!
Hi, Heather, I am new to Ecommerce Business. I have been following your tutorials and loving all of the information you share to help us grow as well Thank you I appreciate you very much. I have a Question about Sales to other countries Should I just sell to the USA or is it ok to sell to all the countries that Printify gives you on the Shipping Template for the Ornaments, t-shirts and Sweatshirts. What is the best thing to do for me since I just began selling ? Have you had any issues with shipping with other countries?
This is a great question! I think the answer lies in your product, niche and design. If those three do not work in unison, then you can spend thousands on ads and still not see a sale. I've grown organically with my store but I know others who do the ads route. I prefer to start organically to do my own market research. If I can't sell organically then thats a good indicator ads won't work. Organic methods are definitely sloth speed to analyze your results so if you have the budget to test your listings, it may be much faster but also more riskier(and can cause burnout if you do not see sales). I like to say there are multiple ways to be successful and some it's ads and others it's organic methods. For me, organic works best because I'm a low risk person(hence why I do POD). Others are willing to have high risk with ads which I think is great- I wish I had that haha! I think it can't hurt trying a mix of both though. Short answer to the question though: I think it has a smaller role in very successful stores. I think the largest role is product validation and Etsy Ads just amplify what sells. I've ran Etsy ads most of this year and out of my 160K in revenue under 10% has been from Ad spend. 90% has been organic and that's why I'd like to think ads aren't as impactful on Etsy.
Great video! I have a question though. How sustainable is the example shown in this video? Just watching one ornament being made, it all looks super simple, but I can imagine that if there is a high demand (say during the holiday season), it could become more difficult to essentially create a new order for every new customer. Is this something that can be done while still working another job, or would it take a lot of ones focus to stay on top of something like this.
As a new store starting out, you don’t have to be so worried about too many orders. Also If it gets to much you can use AnywherePOD which automates the process for you.
I tried to do a custom order listing where I initiated it in Etsy and so that the customer could add their address and names and I would not have Printify fill the order before I added the customization, but under the shipping options Etsy no longer allows you to put "other" as the shipping company. What do you do in this case for the shipping profiles? I have reached out to both Etsy and Printify and neither seem to have a answer. Have you been able to find answers with this?
Heather, this is a fantastic video! Thank you. Do you have a favorite research software? Question1: I know you've spoken about Everbee and Sales Samurai. I'm switching over from Erank and am looking for something that is easier and simpler to use. Thanks so much! Question 2: What are all of the books in the stack behind you? I'm adding inspiration to my reading, and would like to add a few of what has inspired you. Thank you, Heather!
Hi Chris, Everbee is one of my favorite tools and I've liked Erank as well! The books stacked behind me are Tools of Titans by Tim Ferris, Rocket Fuel by Rickman and Winters, The Personal MBA by Josh Kaufman, Good to Great by Jim Collins, Traction by Wickman and the Science of Self-Discipline by Peter Hollins. As far as recommendations, The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy is incredibly insightful, The 4 Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris, and Atomic Habits by James Clear are all a must for business and life! Those 3 books are gamechangers!
@@itsheatherstudio I’m obsessed with Atomic Habits by James Clear, at the moment. I have it in audiobook format, and listen to it when I put my makeup on. Makes a great start to the day. Love what you’ve shown us here. - So much to learn!
Thank you for the video! Two questions. Does changing to manual impact all orders or is there a way to target that preference to only personalized products? Second, when you are creating the duplicate design with the customer's request, do you hide that product? I assume you do not publish it, correct? Thanks!
Hi, I have a question and when other people buy it, do I have to keep making new copies or can I use that one for other buyers? or would it affect the SKU of the previous order?
Thank you for the video Heather - I noticed you said for items you are customizing - to put printify on manual. Won't that effect all my listings or can you have specific listings on manual.
Hi Cindy, for personalization there is currently not a feature to put one item on manual push, you would have to set them all on manual to avoid going straight to production.
Yes! I should've explained further the breakdown but I would sell higher. I have a different video about 'The Ultimate Pricing Guide' but my advice is to never be the lowest and still have a good profit margin.
Enjoyed your video. Question: I see you suggested pricing the ornament in the mid range ($14 or so). Makes sense. But your image of printify billing shows they're charging $7.05 for shipping. So do you add that amount to the customers charge on the Etsy page? As an aside, I actually bought a ceramic ornament like this for a relative at the local mall years and years ago. It was $25 back then and the saleswoman hand wrote the address with marker on the ornament (which was in the shape of a highly sculptured ceramic front door). And she didn't do a good job, either. The house number and street name weren't centered. It was awful, but I felt sorry for her and didn't say anything and took it.
Great video, but if its $6.50 for the product and $6.50 for shipping making it $14 there doesn't seem to be margin for profit. As the competitor you had shown is selling for $10. Where are they ordering from cause its not Printify.
Thank you Heather💜do you send a proof to each customer? i had my first sale now🥳and the customer did not respond to my message with the proof. so i was afraid that i would not be able to meet the stated production time. How do you handle this? Thanks for all your work!
Personalization orders sounds to complicated, I thought the buyer enters their personal name during the order process as oppose to us doing it once the order comes in.
Do you recommend to calculate the shipping separately to the customers or to have a free shipping and add the cost of the shipping to the product price? Thank you
Everyone loves free shipping so that might be a good idea instead of selling an item for $15 then pay $7.99 for shipping. It just seems like a ripoff that way just saying . $15 + free shipping sounds much better!
Yes, the price is an indicator for me! I generally look over pricing and their photos. The ones I showed in this video had used different packaging POD doesn't offer so that's how I knew.
When she put the design onto the ornament, the “C” in “Christmas” lined up where the hole for the string on the ornament was. So you just have to play around with the design and the placement/sizing to make sure the finished product looks exactly how you want.
Hi, @20:47 total bill amount is $14 which is insane. It looks like printify gets the whole profit. This is not even covers etsy fees. With that high prices i would assume anybody who like to sell ornaments from at least $30-35. Im not sure who will be interested to buy an ornament from that price 😔
Since this was 9 months ago and a few other print providers have began offering this at much lower costs. Imagine Your Photo is 5.76 with Printify Premum and 4.44 with Printify Premium. A lot of shops in this niche do not offer free shipping so you can price competitively with no free shipping. Hopefully this helps!

Thank you, Heather, for your thoughtful reply! I may give it a go and just see what happens! Doesn’t hurt to try!

Is there a step by step typed out tutorial on how to do the duplicate and personalization for us newbies trying to navigate this ocean?? Lol
Any POD options in Europe?
How big of a role does Running Etsy Ads correlate in having a very successful Store?
How accurate is the data?
Great video! I have a question though. How sustainable is the example shown in this video? Just watching one ornament being made, it all looks super simple, but I can imagine that if there is a high demand (say during the holiday season), it could become more difficult to essentially create a new order for every new customer. Is this something that can be done while still working another job, or would it take a lot of ones focus to stay on top of something like this.
As a new store starting out, you don’t have to be so worried about too many orders. Also If it gets to much you can use AnywherePOD which automates the process for you.
Hello, do you need help with the designs of Christmas Ornaments for Etsy sales
I tried to do a custom order listing where I initiated it in Etsy and so that the customer could add their address and names and I would not have Printify fill the order before I added the customization, but under the shipping options Etsy no longer allows you to put "other" as the shipping company. What do you do in this case for the shipping profiles? I have reached out to both Etsy and Printify and neither seem to have a answer. Have you been able to find answers with this?
is it bad to funnel traffic from socials?
@@itsheatherstudio Thank you so much, Heather! Have a wonderful day! I appreciate your time.
@@itsheatherstudio I’m obsessed with Atomic Habits by James Clear, at the moment. I have it in audiobook format, and listen to it when I put my makeup on. Makes a great start to the day. Love what you’ve shown us here. - So much to learn!
Thanks for asking about the books, Chris.
Uploaded two cute ornaments last week, and no clicks whatsoever. Went incognito and clicked bunch of times. Still nothing😢
What format did you download from Canva to upload in Printify? Thanks xx
So do you have to personalize each order or does the person ordering personalize it for order?
Thank you for the video! Two questions. Does changing to manual impact all orders or is there a way to target that preference to only personalized products? Second, when you are creating the duplicate design with the customer's request, do you hide that product? I assume you do not publish it, correct? Thanks!
Any personalized has to be manually entered or it will get pushed through if on Auto with what design you have saved
For personalization you duplicate copy of published, save as draft to use for oder inputs to change names ECT
@@itsheatherstudio OK - I'm so new I haven't had my first sale yet - so hopefully I can figure out the order process LOL! Thanks!
When you said “a $10 profit margin” are you saying you would’ve done the ornament listing for $19.99 instead of $9.99 (for example)?
Yes! I should've explained further the breakdown but I would sell higher. I have a different video about 'The Ultimate Pricing Guide' but my advice is to never be the lowest and still have a good profit margin.
I have want only 20000k
How possible?

Hello, do you need help with the designs of Christmas Ornaments for Etsy sales?
Great video, but if its $6.50 for the product and $6.50 for shipping making it $14 there doesn't seem to be margin for profit. As the competitor you had shown is selling for $10. Where are they ordering from cause its not Printify.
Thank you Heather💜do you send a proof to each customer? i had my first sale now🥳and the customer did not respond to my message with the proof. so i was afraid that i would not be able to meet the stated production time. How do you handle this? Thanks for all your work!

How can I price it mid range?? That's the confusing part for me.
Newbie here! Is POD and sublimation the same thing?
@Shannon Marie, POD means Print On Demand. Sublimation is just one particular printing technology that can be used in the POD industry.

Loving your videos, Heather! but quick question, how do you know when a product is POD or when that seller is using sublimation?
Probably from the price. Pod products are MORE expensive.
I’m new to all of this, would sublimation be considered “handmade”
@@leslievalenciano-lopez8887 i think it would depend on who's doing the sublimating...you or a pod provider.
Yes, the price is an indicator for me! I generally look over pricing and their photos. The ones I showed in this video had used different packaging POD doesn't offer so that's how I knew.
Sublimation is a POD company
What do you mean by c getting cut? I'm new to this. Thanks

Thank you so much!💕

So now, wont there be hundreds of clone products?
Heather - do you charge extra for customization? Or is it just included in the price?
I say just charge a bit more for the extra effort required to customize👍you deserve it
