    OD green works well for a few reasons. 1. it's not a ''pattern''. It is easier to move while wearing one solid earth tone color. 2. OD takes on the projected patterns of leaves and branches and natural shadows, (it lends it's self to local foliage). 3. After a while it gets dirty and this only helps it's lending ability even more.

      Yes we would mud it up to blend in with everything in that environment even crawling in shallow running streams as recce we were to observe and not make contact, we also were not to show any state we were part of. The 80s and 90s before the internet a lot more navigating or orienteering.

    What I like about OD is, that it works relatively well but no longer looks extremely militaristic. So one can blend in with nature without standing out of other people.

    Olive green we had in the Netherlands and after some washings it faded a bit and was actually very effective in all kinds of terrains it was the sort of non collour that did not atract the attention of the eye unless you where specially looking for it.
    Once in Africa, we looked for rino's and elegants and althought big and grey they could be standing behind a thin bush or little tree and you couldn't see it at all. That tought me a lot about camouflage effectiveness.

    OD Green seems to be the jack-of-all-trades when it comes to camo. It's adaptive qualities are excellent when you add gear of different camo types (I prefer Dark Earth and German Flecktarn) which help break up your outline and blend in in wooded and grassland environments, especially in the fall when there's not so much green as there is browns. It's also more budget-friendly when compared to something like MultiCam. Just thought I'd throw in my $0.02 worth.

    I love OD green. Trying to find one camo that works in all vegetation is silly. OD in darker provinces and at night= pretty good
    OD in afghanistan= terrible and vice versa. It is all dependent on individual need and mission specifications! Great video!

    • @wojtekimbier
      @wojtekimbier 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not an entirely correct argument. In an environment where a plain olive works good, it would work better if you applied a camouflage pattern to it (keeping the overall colours roughly the same). The ground and plants are full of contrasting dots, blobs and stripes of different shades. A big blob of the same shade of green is uncommon and our eyes can notice the lack of "noise pattern" that should be present there

    • @DaveSmith-cp5kj
      @DaveSmith-cp5kj 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In theory, yes, but in reality a pattern is just that. A pattern which is an indicator in of itself. This is why atacs was effective because it strayed away from the pattern effect, but even then, the choice of contrasting colors draws attention. Even if you see a big blob, if you cannot see the outline or a pattern that screams military, your mind will dismiss it. No matter how good a pattern is, it will never match the texture of it's surroundings. A flat color doesn't give the mind much to ponder aside from the outline of the body, which should not be noticeable in most cases.
      To me, OD green, tan, and white is all you need for any environment.

    Hi, These are great vids, thanks! I would agree that OD is a very versatile pattern. I love my old OD ALICE gear because it remains multi-environment not hampered by a particular scheme. As far as the uniforms I am struck by how effective OD really is, particularly in the shadows amongst dense brush. It seems to be a bit too dark in lighter foliage or where sun permeates which confirms what I used to hear a lot back in the old days from vets, who said it's actually better when it wears a bit or the die lightens up to not so dark of a OD number. I guess like M1956/ 68 & 73 web gear they played around with different shade numbers of OD on the NSN specs over time, even within production runs, to see what worked the best.

    Nowhere near as good as coyote but it does seem to be pretty good when not in direct sunlight. But its a color easily missed if you're not looking for it. But I've noticed that there seems to be different "shades" of OD thats more maker based. I've seen it all the way from a real green olive to the darker European ones to ranger green. You're definitely seems to have a real gray hue to them.
    Nice thing about OD and Coyote is that you can wear it in public and not draw many eyes unlike mooncamo and multicam.

      I mix OD green and some woodland. I live in Arizona and trust me when I say OD green works in the desert environment too. I painted an old RV od green and parked it along a treeline down outside of Yuma. Called a friend and told him where I was at, then walked away from the RV and hid about 400 yards away in front of the RV. It took him about 15 minutes to find the RV, which was in plain sight, in front of the treeline, at about 430pm during the fall. He didnt see it ...the RV was a 20' cab over. I nick named it the war wagon. I used camo mesh over the windshield, windows and lights

    I think you should consider mixing colors to see how that might change things. In the wild, animals commonly have very light legs and darker upper bodies, theoretically to match standing in dirt with a torso against brush. I've seen some unconventional military units try such things with some reputed success. So, I think it would be interesting to mix an OD (OG) upper with a Coyote Tan lower garmet. Likewise, it would be interesting to test Marine green digital over six-color desert pants.
    Also, the lore coming out of WWII was that the Marines didn't like a camo clothing pattern because dot type color schemes were much easier to see when moving. However, when someone was holding still they disappeared very well. So, a dot-style pattern helmet cover worked well for someone observing with only his head up from a fixed position, while leaving the rest of the body in a solid color made them harder to see if moving slightly. I think you could test this in some interesting ways with both mixing the color of the upper body, and testing different helmet or soft cover schemes.

    Thing about camo I think is that when you're patrolling through an environment, you and your battle buddies are the ones moving through the bush. If the enemy is dug in and waiting for you, they're going to have the advantage that being still offers in terms of camo, plus you're not going to have the luxury of standing in one spot, squinting your eyes and focusing on one area for who knows how long, like a window of a youtube channel.
    I used to be of the "Digital is the way to go" but I've been warming up lately to OD green. Thanks for posting this vid, Brent0331.

    I wore OD Sateen the entire time I was an Infantry Marine. We found that after three or four days in the field OD green became dirty, splotched with sweat, and stained to the point it began to take on the appearance of the surrounding environment.
    It became self camouflaging. You could add material and vegetation to it and it worked fine.
    Working as a land survey crew after service we found even simple civilian clothes that were not actually brightend to show up made our crews hard to spot in woods to take Theodolite shots.

It wasn't the best in all situations but it never jumped out to the eye like the various camo patterns. Tiger stripes are popular but in some situations like broken shadows against a dark background, they popped out visually while standing next to a guy wearing your basic OD.

  • @mardiffv.8775

    OD was very popular during the Cold War, from the 50's to the 80's. It was used by NATO forces, both uniforms and vehicle painted OD. The Warsaw Pact used OD primarely for vehicles. The reason why OD was used, in lieu of camouflage pattern was trifold:
    1. The NATO Armies were mechanised, meaning that the soldiers were driven to the battlefield in ACP. So it was a movement war, if war should break out. So a camouflage pattern was not needed when on the move, or staying a short while at a location. Then fight the WP and retread to the next defence location. On the move, camouflage does not work.
    2. OD is cheap, it takes only 1 dying process. A camo pattern takes 3 to 6 dying processes, depending on th number of colors. The armies were hughes in numbers, so cutting costs of soldiers gears was important.
    3. PR was very important. Camo looked too agressive in the eyes of civilians and OD did not so much. This happened mostly during the 70's, when the West Germans fased out their 1950's camouflage uniform for OD/ Stone Grey uniforms.
    OD was very effective against star light amplifier night vision devices. The Dutch Army switched from OD to the British DPM camouflage 1993 and it showed in test. The tan colors stood out on the night vision and OD was very hard to spot.

    I think it works with the canopy of the forest as the light coming through and the shadows create a moving pattern so it will blend in to an environment but won't fully distort your outline like more dedicated camo uniforms. Plus, OD green just had that classic look to it and is usually a good material. German field OD shirts are real good for keeping you cool in the heat.

    Hi Brent, I very much like your camo tests and comparisons, however I would like to point out that your title is incorrect. Apologies for nitpicking but what you are in fact wearing is Olive Green (not Olive Drab or OD) specifically OG-107. There is a clear difference as Olive Drab is the colour between Tan and Green, whereas Olive Green is (as the name suggests) more towards the green end. Olive Drab is currently the colour worn by the Israeli Defence Force as their standard service uniforms and you will see it is much more tan than what you are wearing. Hope this clears things up. Please keep the great videos coming.

    My favorite uniform of all time is Vietnam OD utilities. It was decided during Vietnam that ODs would be issued over camo uniforms because in the thick foliage the green provided adequate concealment and movement gave away a soldier's location, not color of his uniform. That's still true.

    One thing to consider: an HD camera or any camera for that matter, doesn't process light or color like the human eye. I have watched the woodland camo video and this one so far and you can clearly see the camera accentuating the light drenched, bright green leaves and foliage. Me personally, I like the tiger stripe, because it breaks up the human form against a background the best IMO. But every environment is different, I surely wouldn't have wanted tiger stripe in Kabul.

    just a thought..but as an observation,here is what i notice wring with solid Olive drab. when you look at the surroundings notice the effect of light on foliage. bright vibrant colors,but somewhat broken up by flecks of varying intensity of color. the color of the foliage doesn't change ..its the light source that is on it directly or shaded. if a object is painted in the most intense brightest colors found in a setting,then when it is placed in "the shade " it does the same effect as a plant in direct sunlight as compared with it being placed in the shade. the problem i see is that too much emphasis is placed on darker colors,when nature already changes the lighting and its effects on the object.

    Was looking up Ranger green vs Multicam. I feel like green can hold up because some of the shots I didn’t see you at all. Maybe your a master of hiding but I think at least in the prone the solid green colour really kinda shows, and that multicam is better overall, maybe in a darker tint.
    Part of my reasoning with ODG is not being able to see the plate carrier and objects your carrying. Plus some clothes are common in solid colours like green.

    OD Green is fairly easy to spot compared to other green colored camos. It doesn't have the dispersion as multi colored camos like Multicam, Marpat, Flecktarn etc. I'm looking to start play airsoft and I have learned that the darker and greener the colors are the better; on the most part. I am thinking of doing a Russian Digital Flora as the main BTU and OD green for the vest.

    i like one color utilities. they tend to work better than woodland etc.. this was good. alot of camouflage really has to do with lighting and shadows for instance @ night O.D. Green is excellent. it even works better than all black because of the light reflecting properties. but as a rule of thumb it seems green is a tough pattern to mimic in nature. and our eyes will differentiate shades of green quicker than browns and tans. so like animals who mostly use browns and tans we are better suited for those light earth tones or flat dark earth tones. for blending in to the surrounding.
    but iv'e always liked O.D. green its old school and it seems to generally work better than woodland pattern. i joined the Marine corps during the woodland camo era.. in the eighties and i stayed around long enough to transition to the digital uniform. and it's good to see the evolution.

    In the end, yes, maybe i can notice you if i knew that you were in that 720p square but when somebody is patrolling/moving and have to check at least 180° i don't think that it's going to notice you:
    I noticed that in movement it actually catches the eye less than a normal camo can you confirm?

      That is one of the reasons I leave the movement phase in my
      videos, so that people can see how the pattern preforms on the move. I don’t
      know if it’s better than all camouflage patterns while on the move, but I have
      read according to Olive-drab.com that the Marine Corps noticed that OD fatiques
      were better than the camouflage uniforms while on the move. “Camo only had the advantage when held still, such
      as when used by a sniper placed in a static position.” olive-drab.com/od_soldiers_clothing_combat_ww2_usmc_camo.php

    • @DaveSmith-cp5kj
      @DaveSmith-cp5kj 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      kuromatsu01 This is why I nearly always avoid a pattern. Many don't realize that when you match a camouflage precisely to an environment, you are only getting partial "effectiveness" as you are relying primarily on tricking the eyes ability to see the human silhouette. The viewer actually sees the camouflage pattern (creating an outline, but a non-human one) so when you move, it is equivalent to the observer seeing a tree move. A flat drab color of one of the "holy trinity" (white, green, or tan) with the possibility of slight blending with another shade effectively has no outline, which is what the eye primarily spots as a reference of movement. Of course, no pattern will make you invisible, and background has a big role in this effect, but still, I think that experience has shown flat drab colors to be superior to many patterns.

      I actually use a OD green kit for airsoft, and its advantage is that I can keep my pants on when I use public transport to and from the field without getting to many weird looks.
      it also is great for just playing CQB, you are not just black, but also it doesnt look weird to run around rooms with some sort of camo.

    @knightingale9833 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was able to see you pretty quickly most of the time, but it took longer the further away you set up the camera. That’s the important thing to note: at close distance, anyone can spot someone no matter what camouflage they are using, save for a ghillie suit because that has actual foliage attached to it. The human shape will pop out whether you are using OD, Woodland, Multicam, etc at close distance, but by the time you get that close to them, it’s too late anyways.
    Not to mention of course your camera has a rather focused field of view which also makes spotting you easier than if we were walking in the woods with the whole panorama of nature surrounding us, plus there's also the way the human brain works. Soldiers out on a patrol are trained to assume there's enemy out there and to be actively looking for them sure, but your ability to spot someone still won't be as sharp as it is when you know for a fact that there is someone there.
