    This is where MARPAT really shines, in spring it's way too dark and you look too dark and stand out like a tree against all the green. But when everything dies and it's all brown and light browns, you blend in extremely well

      Faded woodland marpat works pretty well in spring.

    It really is amazing what the Marines have come up with when they receive the smallest funds out of all the major branches.

      Well what I like is with their vehicles is that they still make amphibious and fording a priority.

      JONATHan CaPiChanO They did not come up with it, the Canadians came up with it, it was just modified for the Marines. As for they get the least money. Marine Corps $40.6 billion 4%Total Budget taken allotted from Department of Navy
      Remember the Navy pays for a lot of what they do. Plus they are a much smaller fighting force.

      +Alex Cardosa (Kiljoy616) if we wanna get real technical here Americans used a very similar pattern in Europe starting in the late 70's.

    It's just amazing to me how Marpat looks green in the spring/summer or in a coniferous forest, yet looks brown in the fall/winter in deciduous forests. It's amazing. It almost looks as brown at the Austrian zeltbahn pattern in this environment.
    edited to add.
    Wow, it even blends in with a hard wood tree trunk which has grey bark at 7:34.

    Brent. I can't stress enough about how much I love your videos. I recently watched your videos about hunting camo patterns. Long story short, you should really check out Predator camo and ASAT camo. Both patterns really hone in on versatility and shredding the human outline. If you want to check out the Predator patterns you should definitely look at fall grey, brown deception, and 3-D deception.

    I've noticed that with a number of your tests, the pattern tend to work the best during fall-winter, even woodland. I've comment on your second part of the M81 Woodland effectiveness test on how it performed better in that part than the first.
    Are most woodland patterns designed for the fall-winter seasons? Do most fighting take place during fall and winter? Or is the idea behind it is that soldiers and marines are more meant to take cover and hide behind trees and such, which are often dark and brown than to be hiding behind a heavily vegetated spot?

    • @thealliedpowers
      @thealliedpowers 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      THIS MUST BE ANSWERED

    • @thealliedpowers
      @thealliedpowers 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the reason most woodland camouflages seem overly dark is because they expect you to try and get deep into the foliage where darker greens and brown background of the dirt are. And using nature to camouflage yourself more than your uniform. Brent says he wants to show off the camouflage to demonstrate effectiveness without having to completely conceal himself in bushes.
      cronodon.com/images/woodland_2.jpg
      Take this picture for example, imagine you're wearing Woodland MARPAT. Where would you hide ignoring the trees? Yeah, that shady bush over there. Get low and you'll blend right in.

    • @21rhocke
      @21rhocke 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I read someone else's response on another video that seemed to answer this question. The human eye can easily distinguish between several different shades of green whereas all browns tend to blend for us. That's why he's easier to spot in the spring videos even if the color he's wearing is only slightly off while in the fall videos it's nearly impossible (this marpat video being a good example).

    • @MALICEM12
      @MALICEM12 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because M81 woodland and MARPAT weren't designed with Texas' vegetation in mind. For example, when the military were using M81 woodland it was the cold war so they wore camo that fit in with European woodlands as that's where they believed most of the fighting would take place, it wasn't meant as a defensive camo for staying in the US so that's why it's generally too dark for our vegetation.

    • @mardiffv.8775
      @mardiffv.8775 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MALICEM12 Not exactly, M81 Woodland was an updated version of the ERDL pattern used in Vietnam. The lime green color was replaced by light brown/ tan and the pattern was enlarged by 60 %. Here is a video of M81 development: th-cam.com/video/0aHxhnI2-_w/w-d-xo.html
      The US military used M81 in the tropics (Grenada and Panama wars), South Korea and Germany. So M81 was used everywhere except the deserts of the middle east of course. I am from Western Europe and the forests are the same as the Texas forest above.

  • @Bojengle

    The problem I saw with MARPAT is when it gets wet it becomes extra dark, more so prevalent in a newer set. So when Marines are doing Marine things sweating their balls off these things make you stick out pretty badly. These things work a lot better when they start to fade a little in my opinion based on my experiences.
    BTW Semper Fi devil! Really enjoying the camouflage videos, and with the shooting towards the camera really drives the effectiveness of the camo home. Thanks!

  • @RJT80
    @RJT80 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The issue with even the much hated Army ACU is that people dont take into account is that these patterns were developed to be effective at hundreds of meters/yards where engagements were actually occurring. I've seen the hated ACU at 300 yards against both a desert and foliage background and they worked at that distance. At ten yards away where most defense journalists were taking photos to churn up outrage, they were understandably garbage. As would be the man jammies and flip flops the enemy was wearing. They rarely ever let us get that close for a reason.
    Maybe Ukraine is different but we were 200-300 meters out during most engagements and even 'shitty camo' patterns made a difference.

  • @fernaorosas

    Too dark.
    Is interesting to the Amazon, but not to theaters of temperate or tropic operations or thickened forests like you have there. I found you every time and even when i had doubts they were between 2 spots, but then i chose the best spot in relation to the trail and you were there. Good camo, but not very good camo. Fulfills the mission.
    Ps.: i was DM in Brazilian Army, so i know what to look.
    Pps .: we also need a new pattern, ours is still dark too. From my chair the solution is to break the silhouette on the shoulders, pelvis and head. It was these parties that denounced him.
    Good vid. Selva!

    • @hanburgundy4317
      @hanburgundy4317 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only way to break the silhouette is to stop repeating the pattern from head to toe; a good pattern needs open space to allow the eye to pass over it and digital camo has none. Open space allows the eye to focus on the mimicry added to the pattern, essentially eliminating the human outline; military patterns use neither, resulting in blocky human shapes being identified. Eventually, they'll learn and start copying what hunting patterns have done for the last few decades to great success.

    10. Saw you right away, only briefly unsure
    11. Missed you completely
    12. Saw that patch right away, but would have aimed above you
    13. Saw you about halfway through, was slightly unsure tho
    14. Missed you completely. That patch kept drawing attention, but you blended right it
    15. Spotted you right away. Easy one tho, good idea to not give it much time
    This pattern pwned me, makes it a top contender for what I'll pick lol. Good test, as always

    In part II (environment with predominance of browns) Marpat is more effective, the USMC did a good job, not like the UCP. But, I prefer M81 Woodland pattern and if it's washed better.

    Performance was comparable to M81 in this season. (Lots of browns)

    Great video as always, and the pattern is very effective, but I agree with you on your favorites about the Tiger Stripe and the Rhodesian Camo Pattern are the most effective. I still love Tiger Stripe. Marpat works really good, but then again you make it work in your favor and there are times you blend in well into the environment, but then others the shadows are not in your favor. I would definitely say that to make camo work don't walk around with a target indicator black weapon only something like the patterns you do on your weapons to make be the best it can for you.

    very hit or miss. A couple of the prones were good, one time standing with your back turned was good, and one laying almost completely behind things was good at 10:00 (I would say largely because of the resolution). Most of these positions you were an eye magnet though. I guess it depends on the person, or I might just be tripping. Knowing there is someone hiding in the shot is definitely a huge factor though

    I’d love to see it used against the AOR2 (which I’m still getting used to it being called since we Sailors just say NWU III). I have a feeling the MARPAT would do better in darker, more shadowed terrain but it would be interesting.

    Getting a full set of marpat gear on army surplus. I also saw some urban tiger stripe that looked like it would be really effective, not sure if you have an urban tiger stripe video. I just can't find a good tac vest in marpat, or any good digital design outside of ACU, which sucks... the only ones I've found are shitty airsoft knock-offs.

    Marpat learned woodlands mistake of the big black blotches the only thing I wish the marine corps did was make a multicam pattern or in fact keep the old wood land pattern but make the blotches smaller.

    It doesn’t matter what camo you wear, within reason. The best camo os to be still. I guarantee you that I could wear solids and you’d never see a person in light brush 20 yards from you if you weren’t looking really hard. It’s hard to emphasize the importance of being completely still.

    Thanks man for responding and that helped me. Also thank you for your service to this country,I have a cousin who was a Marine sniper,oh and I have one more question sorry for bothering you. I was just curious what made you decide to join the Marine Corps I like asking vets this or men who are still in the armed forces.

    • @Brent0331
      @Brent0331  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Navy SEAL 101 There's a lot of comradely amongst the Marine Corps, even after you get out. Because its the smallest branch of the U.S. military there is a stronger tighter bond I think. Just a small example, but start looking at the back of vehicles as you drive down the road. I bet you see more Marine Corps stickers on vehicles than you do all the other branches combined, despite the fact that we have only a small fraction of the personnel that the other branches do.

    Anyone ever used this stuff for deer hunting. I'm thinking about picking up a couple sets so I can have them for dual purpose.

    • @johnnybgoode2333
      @johnnybgoode2333 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't matter for deer hunting, I had to wear bright orange when deer hunting (with gun) and they don't really see it. It's movement, and ESPECIALLY smell are what you have to worry about for deer.

    • @hanburgundy4317
      @hanburgundy4317 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nah, smell is a myth; I go into the woods after a shower wearing deodorant and cologne and can even smoke a little cannabis and deer don't notice a thing; as long as you have a good pattern (Realtree, TrueTimber, Mossy Oak, etc.), they'll come within ten feet of you without noticing you're there. Movement and sound are the two biggest factors that scare off deer, especially sound. I couldn't tell you how many times I've been within spear distance of a deer with good camo.

      Slapnuts138 Can't really say brother, I look at the environment and pick the pattern I feel will be most effective in it. Some of my personal favorites though are tiger stripe and the Rhodesian pattern.

    Is it better than m81 woodland or OCP?

  • @Jinseual
    @Jinseual 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    MARPAT is pretty effective, makes one wonder why the Army developed the UCP when they had MARPAT available.

    • @masonadler6774
      @masonadler6774 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      the Marine Corps copyrighted their pattern and made it so the other branches couldn't use it, that's why the army couldn't use it.
      still though, ucp was a terrible choice, old woodland and 3 color desert would be better than ucp

    • @doorguner01
      @doorguner01 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marines hold themselves apart from the rest of the NAVY and from Army and Air Force soldiers; all of the branches do, but especially the Marines. They "have to be" different.
