I loved the old 3 color DCUs because especially out in the desert at Ft.Irwin CA they were cooler to wear and dont burn up in them when it got really hot.I like the heavy weight pattern than the rip stop because they were tougher and hold up better.Unfortunately by the time i got to Iraq in 06 the Army only issued us ACUs which sucked because the stiches would fall apart and rip easily,not to mention the color scheme tended to attract and hold in heat during the summer.I hated patroling during the summer especially August when it was the hottest month.I would come back to the FOB soaking wet from all the sweat.The old DCUs were very comfortable in my opinion.

Always like your videos on camouflage effectiveness... one thing about this generation of gear is that the USA really began revamping plus ramping up quality of the clothing from underwear, to layering, and to more demanding outerwear. A few great examples are Polartech waffle long-johns and that gen. of ECWCs Cold weather parka is one of my all-time favorites still today.
This is one of my all time favorites, had a bunch as a kid leftover from neighbors. This and DBDU, I just am finishing up a mostly dcu kit for this exact reason; winter and fall in the woods, also works well for summer in my area.. thanks for the video Brent!
I agree with you. I find it very effective in the transitional seasons of Canada. I have almost finished collecting a complete 3CD kit issue for myself. I prefer this and the M81WL. I am collecting ACU for winter ops to be paired with white paint as required.
Nice, found you 70% of the time, that being said i probably have had more practice that the average guy.... again that being said lighting always looks different when its on a camera, overall id say 3 color is a good choice in that environment. Liked & Subscribed
This camo works extremely well in tall grass (the more dead the grass is the better), especially at night, one time at a camp out I decided to bring this camo to test it, around sunset I was walking through some tallish grass and when I looked down I could hardly even see my legs.
Had once set of BDU 3 color from special forces airborne with same pants, sold the shirt but still using pants which are great obviously in warm conditions but if you use layer in winter environment they're useful too. As someone said before, this pattern is somehow legendary cos of sf used them in Afghanistan and Iraq, I think it's one of the best patterns ever made...
i use this camo for airsoft in southern California and let me tell ya, its super effective, i have had people step over me and not notice i was there. the only time its not is right after a rainstorm when everything turns green

Seriously? I always look at my surrounding environments when I'm out and the DCU I have appears far too bright to work. I live in the midwest like Brent so our wilderness looks similar.
The Allied Powers My DCU worked back when I lived in west Colorado, that comment was back when I lived there. It was perfect because I was practically in the dessert. Now I'm in a more wooded rural area, I go between woodland and multicam now. DCU is way too bright for where I'm at as well now

3 Pattern DCU and Woodland M81 BDU Camouflage Pattern Uniforms , were the Outfits that I Myself, John Rodriguez, wore from 1987 to 1998, with 1 Year and 4 Months in the Army National Guard ( ARNG ) and US Army Reserve ( USAR) , first and foremost, having initiated My Career in the Marine Corps.
This was a great pattern. Once it got dirty and a bit wet from your sweat it was very good blending with the semi-wooded / arid environments of Afghanistan and the deserts of Iraq. One negative thought, at night and cleaned it kinda made you stand out. I imagine it would def make you visible in the woods too.

I decided to try this pattern out for dove hunting. All I wore was some tan wrangler pants with a 3 color desert surplus combat jacket and a tan boonie hat. My hunting partner had to actually look for me so that says something. I have bdu pants in this pattern coming too
It works "pretty well" for that environment, but for every time you weren't "cheating" below LOS I spotted you every time only because that pattern is a little bit brighter than the surround. Still works pretty dang good though!
Chocolate Chip was issued from 1983 -1992 . Coffee Stain was issued from 1993-2014 with the Navy being the last to use it . The Coast Guard is the only branch that still uses the Wooland BDU and Desert DCU. The Young Marines are the only cadet organization that still uses the Woodland BDU. The Civil Air Patrol now wares the Air Force ABU & Navy Sea Cadet Corps now ware the Blue NWU as of 2015 .The State Guard has dropped the DCU & BDU . Some unorganized Malita's that do not belong to the government still ware the BDU & DCU.
Hi Brett, thanks for your service. When you were still, your visibility factor was zero. When you stood up however the camo did seem to "shine" somewhat when you entered sunlight. All in all though, pretty good for a pattern designed for a desert environment. Thank You for your Videos.
I wonder how well dyed 3-color and six-color desert camo would work in springtime? Use Rit dye in a similar manner to you dyed UCP video but convert the desert cammies to a green woodland camo?
Desert cam and digital desert work good here in Florida winter too. All the kings grass and pastures. Looks just like ur area but flat and no trees. Just miles and miles of that grass.

What do you do with an extremely light desert camouflage set ? Like a brandnew reversible set... in woodland area with tussock during Winter. I guess roll around on the ground in it to get it dirty in its own environment. My woodland/desert reversible set is brandnew & its desert side is so light I haven't figured out how to use it & not blow my cover. Can you give me any tips on preparation or how to use it.

I would be confident in wearing both those patterns in theater. I will say that there were parts of Iraq that 3 color desert and the desert DPM the Brits had at the time would be far more effective than MultiCam. For instance during the initial part of the invasion we crossed into Iraq from Kuwait. From Kuwait pretty much all the way up to the outskirts of Baghdad the terrain was mostly desert. Once we started getting closer to Baghdad there was a lot more vegetation, trees, and whadi like terrain that I think MultiCam & MTP would have been more suited. Either way I think both pattern are suitable over there.

Darken the Greenish color a Little bit, not much, then make the Khaki a tan.. keep the Brown as Is and presto! It would work in many areas. I still use the DCU Pants while Hunting, with a Vietnam Tiger Stripe Top.

+B&A Tactical gear A damn shame too, here in the states DPCU is like a unicorn. I would love to get some because where I live(Oklahoma) it would be very effective due to its' use of russet and burnt-orange. What I have seen affordable was only in a Cotton-Polyester blend and I hate Polyester.
I Guess DCU made for a better "Universal" camo pattern than UCP? I don't know why the US Army replaced DCU and M81 woodland with UCP. Glad to see the Army say good bye to that useless pattern.
Highly effective in its targeted environments and full of legendary Spec-Ops history. DCU is really my most favorite camo.

I Guess DCU made for a better "Universal" camo pattern than UCP? I don't know why the US Army replaced DCU and M81 woodland with UCP. Glad to see the Army say good bye to that useless pattern.
