- Here is show good steering technique using the push pull method. This is how we are taught to drive in the UK.
Good steering helps us to keep control of the steering wheel as one hand is always gripping the wheel.
Good steering is part of the advanced driving that we can learn better after our driving test.

@@ChimpOnCars I have owned more Jaguars in my 60 years than any other marque. Up until recently they were very classy, not so sure about the latest offerings though.
True, I’ve switched to BMW for my modern now. Love the old Jags but you need to be prepared for electronic issues that will be difficult to diagnose and fix unless you go for the pre Ford era.

I just started learning to drive am struggling with steering like this my instructor said to me try using a plate pretending it’s a steering wheel haven’t tried it yet as had my first lesson today will give it a go as I’m struggling with stearing

Thank u for this😭Last week I practiced with my dad and we were making one of these turns. I almost crashed into a car cause i didn’t know when to push the steering wheel the other way once the car was fully turned. Now i am pretty much terrified of driving again😅

I am doing my lessons at the moment (yes I left it quite late, age 35), and having issues with one of my hands moving only the other one stays in the same position 😅🤦🏼♂️. I also turn either to early (hitting curb) or late, then I end up in the other lane and if there was a car, I would be in trouble. I guess practice..
I’ve taught plenty your age and a lot higher, I’m sure you will be fine.
The steering will become instinctive soon enough, maybe you are overthinking it at the moment. Practice will make progress, good luck and let us know how you are getting on in a few weeks.

I'm used to single hand steering most of the time specially if I need to use the clutch fast in traffic.
Not sure I’ve ever needed a hand free to use the clutch but good point if you do.

The best steering technique is great, but it may be prudent to teach people how to use that stick that connects to the column of that steering wheel. I'm not talking about the one that removes water from the windshield either!

Yes because if u get into a collision and the airbag comes out it’s not a soft thing it’ll hit your arm and it’ll break the beginning feels like a hard punch

I think if you are under steering or over steering then you are going too fast. This is not a tutorial for a race track just normal road driving.
The airbag is an interesting concept because yes it could help but most countries don't adopt the pull push method so I don't think it is that dangerous considering cars would need to change to sell international. I do think that hand over hand or crossing the hands can in fact allow you to steering quicker and have more control. But you can run out of steering.@@shaz0524

However, newer cars actually have a self returning steering wheel, and the way engineers achieved it is not by adding a kind spring nor an automatic system, but by moving the caster angle back, so it is slightly diagonal, so once you release the steering, a restoring torque will happen due to the movement of the car and the caster angle, which will bring the front wheels back to their original position.
My oldest car is 1935 and it’s steering will straighten by itself. The reason that we don’t use this is a question of safety.
Most cars will do that, it's not some new fangled technology. It's not like there are motors that physically turn your wheel back to straight after you're done turning. It's a result of the way the steering rack itself was designed, and also how physical technicalities of the changing of direction indubitably functions, abiding by the unbreakable laws of physics. Anyway, I have to go now. I think I left my quantum fluxuator on (it's what I use to charge my flux capacitor). I'll see you in 1977, or... however that works
Cars have had caster angle as long as bicycles have existed.
That is the only reason the wheel returns to centre.
You could remove the steering rack entirely, the wheels would still track straight as long as there’s a bar connecting the two together.
Relying on the restoring force is poor driving technique, when the steering wheel is slipping through your hands you have no control over the direction of the car.
A good driver can feed in the steering and return it back with precision whilst always having one hand static on the wheel at any given time.
@gtjack9 my driving instructor is literally teaching me to let it return to the middle on its own, but like you said that literally feels so unsafe to me, when i can literally just control it manually.
As the others have stated in this thread, it works but it’s not the safest technique.

Thats not the best way to do it. On some turnings you won't be able to turn quick enough.

But when you're a beginner level driver , and so nervous why am I forgetting which side to turn steer back. What should be the best method un that case😢
Thankfully that becomes easier with practice, like tying a shoelace.
If you need extra cheap practice then get short term insurance (link in description) and a full license holder. Head to a quiet industrial estate or car park and just put some practice in steering around things and into gaps.

I just got my student license. I tried to steer like this and I almost went overshooting, quite scary. Btw I have a friend who has a DL when I was driving. Still need practice. Hehehe.
Try driving slower while you practice if you are overshooting
That is very useful for your practical test! I’m sure students will benefit from this video but if anyone drives like this after the test… that’s when I start to question things 😅

Excellent, try feeding the wheel for your slow around town driving. It is a great way to steer if you give it a go and practice it enough to do it well.
@@ChimpOnCars gave it a go today. On the slow parts of course and it was quite difficult since I hadn’t done that in so long. I drive one handed most the time since I drive manual and one handed steering is very practical for me. I also cross my arms for some turns and at roundabouts I feed the steering wheel for maximum control
Once the movement is muscle memory it becomes really easy.
Can be very rewarding on a twisting country lane or a hairpin pass.

Everytime ive seen someone do this form of steering its just resulted in quick jittery motions. Way better to just criss cross hands

This is the WORST steering method. The best method is hand over hand that allows better control of the wheel, faster steering in an emergency and less chance of the wheel escaping your grip even in rough terrain. You got a NO-GO at this station, go back to retraining.
This is a good method that we teach for advanced driving on roads. Off road would be a bit different.
But i use single hand bruh

@@Jack-ny4vuin Canada it's ok on test to let wheel straighten out by gently but closely letting go the wheel, driving instructors teach that way too so maybe in your country it's not recommended

It will become a lot easier as you drive more. Your first lessons should be on easy roads where your instructor can help as needed.

No, this is a road driving video. Check out rally driving videos for steering tips on that topic.
Oliver Solberg races in the world rally championship and he posted a video a few days ago of a rally and he was using this technique during a rally, the current WRC champion also uses it while drifting and street driving.

You will probably need to take one hand off as using another part of your body will be more difficult
Steering like that in black and white is less hazardous as you have both hands on the wheel at all times = full control of the vehicle. HOWEVER this is the first habit I’ve heard many instructors say you should break when you’ve passed.
For proper reactive driving, you should cross hands to steer quicker. There have been many instances of new drivers crashing because they have been unable to steer quick enough around a tight junction or to exit a small roundabout or avoid an obstacle because they have been shuffling the steering wheel as you show here.
I’ve never recommended any of my students forget this skill after passing so I would be interested to know where you get your stats from to support this.
Drive with one hand on the wheel. And when driving fast, use 2 hands but I’ve never used this technique after my test was passed and immediately broke from this teaching. It’s very impractical and less responsive turning with this technique, I feel I got less control of the car than when I use 1 hand or cross my arms while steering

Imo, turning the wheel in a crossing motion is safer as it is objectively quicker which is why racing drivers do not use the method you showed.

This is best for street driving as it keeps your arms out the way of the air bag (exactly why it’s taught this way)
Though hand over hand at 9 and 3 is usually best for sportier driving
The airbags would cause a lot of damage if your arm was across it!

It's just for passing your driving test. Nobody really knows why this became the "gold standard" of steering, but it's the way the system was set up and you just gotta do it. I guess the main reason is because it helps to avoid a situation where the airbag goes off and breaks your arms. That would suck. It's just one of those "just in case" typa things I guess.

Ok, I see the confusion. You think you should drive like a rally driver on the road? This is a demonstration for a good steering technique on the road by a professional driver. If you can’t do it then practice or give up and do whatever you currently do.
The best technique is the safest, even if it doesn't look cool. Because looking cool does not prevent accidents

1950's Hendon police academy shuffle, every test driver working in the automotive industry or motorsports will tell you thats not the way to do it as you can't keep track of the straight ahead position without looking
This is not recommended for motorsport, lots of commenters confusing this for a motorsport instructional video!
Very easy to know the straight ahead position with whichever steering technique you use.

Nah you’re adding a degree of complexity to something that is very easy in most modern cars, this is only useful with no power steering, otherwise it’s another thing to get distracted with

@@ChimpOnCars if you say so, i think you have less control no matter how good you get at it, I think it’s counter intuitive and therefore when pressure situations arise, even seasoned drivers will get confused to where their hands to wheel radius are exactly, especially in a manual car. If you need to react, you need to react, and if you’re trained to push pull, you ain’t reacting in time lmao
Maybe I am of a higher intellect than others as I’ve never found myself confused as to where my hands are? As a professional driver and high mileage commuter before that I’ve covered a lot of miles so would probably have dealt with more difficult situations than you can imagine!

@@ChimpOnCars just because a few people agree with you, doesn’t mean it is better… It’s jerky, slow. If in an emergency where you have to suddenly have to apply a lot of steering angle, say icy conditions. The jerkiness and speed that you can apply steering angle, will make it far more unsafe than crossing arms etc.
I’m not sure you understand how if you are not capable of doing this then that is a lack of practice on your part. I can’t play the trumpet but that doesn’t mean that trumpets are no good, it just means that I haven’t put the work in.
As you can see from my video it doesn’t have to be jerky or slow. With practice anyone, including you, could do this.
If you don’t want to that’s fine but you don’t have to suggest that nobody is capable of doing this just because you can’t.

Watch the video, it’s not jerky. Sit next to a professional driver and it will not be jerky. Come and see me drive and again, you probably guessed it, it will not be jerky.

They still do and it is expected on advanced driving tests. Join your local Institute of Advanced Motorists and the course will take you from a good driver to a great driver.

I did that in a driving test and failed because of that. I sometimes still "clean my plate" as my instructor called it even after 7 years of owning my license. But most of the time i try not to.

You’re not supposed to be turning like that, the first method you used, was the “milking cow” method, and the second one that you used, is more dangerous than the first, because you can break your wrist.
Both the same push pull steering method. I’ve never heard it called milking the cow and can assure you that it would be impossible to break a wrist doing it.

@@DriftNickthis is quite literally only done when drifting as far as competitive racing goes and they yank the wheel more
@@walterwhite6490 I already told you that Oliver Solberg was doing it while racing, it was also during a tarmac rally, the reason you don't really see it for with circuit racing is because they do not turn the wheel enough, there is no need for it if you can keep your hands on the wheel, you'll often see it on older cars on tight corners though.
As for it's use in drifting, you aren't using it to yank the wheel, in fact I mostly use it in drifting when trying to straighten the wheel smoothly.
