  • Been receiving a lot of questions about majoring in Computer Science and how it's different from majoring in Computer Engineering. So, in this video we compare the two fields and address the differences between them. Please let me know if I missed anything related to/about Computer Science as I do not have a lot of knowledge about that degree field.

    Have you taken any courses during the summer? I’ll be starting college this fall and if I ever were to drop a few classes then I would have to take them over the summer. Have you ever had to drop a class and take it during the summer? I’m wondering cuz I wanna see if it’s possible to not take any classes during the summer so I can be free and look for a part time job during the summer

    • @TheSn12
      @TheSn12  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, I’ve never had to drop a class before but I still needed to take summer classes for two consecutive summers. When I was a freshman, I didn’t know what I wanted to major in so I had a couple of courses (about 2-3) that didn’t apply to my CompE degree and I needed to make them up. These courses were also prerequisites for my future fall/spring courses which is why I had to take them in the summer otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to graduate in the expected 4 years timeframe. It may be different for you (I don’t know if the classes you drop are/will be prerequisites for other classes you need to take for your degree). Since you’ll be a freshman, if you do drop a couple of classes I think you’ll be okay with working over the summer without taking any classes since a lot of them are general subjects (humanities, English, etc.) which are not usually pre-requisites for anything sort of engineering degree. Although, I wouldn’t drop more than two or three courses in a single semester because you’ll most likely need to take more credit hours than the average full time student ( > 15 credits) in the following semester. This is because, even though they may not be pre-requisites, you’ll still need to take a certain amount of credits and classes in order to graduate within 4 years (applies to all bachelors degrees). This amount of credits involves a LOT of course work so it will be stressful but if you’re not working during the school year then you’ll be okay. Hope that wasn’t too confusing haha

  • @celsiusfahrenheit1176

    Writing kernels, compilers in C or assembly, hypervisors, OSs can be done by a CS person. I think CE are dealing with hardware architecture. That is something we CS students do not cover, I took only one semester of that subject, the van Neumann computer model being the focus. We did cover a lot of the Turing and Church computing theory.

    • @TheSn12
      @TheSn12  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you are exactly right. We do focus a lot more on the hardware architecture. I’ve needed to take multiple computer architecture & network courses as a graduate student. Also took one OS course as an undergrad CE which was the only class that we shared with other CS students. They knew much more about the material than we did since our focus was on the architecture than the software. Thank you for the information!

      @TheSn12  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      YES. The main ones are Calc I, II, and III, Adv. Mathematics for engineers (I.e. differential equations) and linear algebra but most, if not all, of the CompE core courses require you to have this knowledge in order to be successful (such as circuits 1 and 2, computer architecture, programming, etc.). Aside from mathematicians, engineers require you to learn and take the most math courses.

    That was well explained. I’m a computer engineering major too. But sometimes I wonder If I chose the right major because I feel like I would enjoy the programming and designing part . But I think that if you want to go to grad school then choose Computer engineering as a undergrad and do computer science masters. That way you can have some hardware background and actually understand what you are talking about. Not to offend computer science but sometimes they don’t even understand what they talk because they don’t have “embedded” knowledge

    • @TheSn12
      @TheSn12  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It depends on the individual since they are very similar and the salary is about the same (for a full time career). It all depends on your preferences. If you prefer to work with the hardware, build circuit boards and/or you like working in the labs and measuring the voltages, capacitance, inductance, etc. of a microcontroller then electrical engineering would be a good option. But if you instead prefer more programming or software/computer type work then computer engineering would be better.

      Yes, definitely. Yeah but it’s less flexible and has way less trajectory than Computer Engineering. CPE majors typically have access to just as much entry level software jobs as CS majors. However, CS majors don’t have access to the more hardware oriented jobs, like embedded systems and controls systems engineering. Additionally, CPE majors can easily pickup a CS masters later and be more than qualified for any software/hardware position, but CS majors can’t as easily pickup a CPE masters.

      Yes. Although you’ll most likely need to spend more time learning about programming and the details of it (I.e. optimization, parallelism, threads, processes, GUI’s, etc.) since this is what is needed and required in order to build large and efficient software programs. Computer engineering just teaches you the basics/fundamentals of programming (I.e. short and simple scripts) but you can gain still gain knowledge and experience as an intern or in your free time (such as watching videos and building your own little software “project”)

      Marin Lopez Personally, I’d say yes but it ultimately depends on the individual. If you decide to pursue a masters you’ll definitely have a higher chance of getting a higher paid entry-level job. But then again, you have to commit to another year or two worth of school work and school expenses. If you think it’s worth it and you know you can get a job that pays significantly higher with a masters than a bachelors degree then I’d say go for it. Most of the time this is the case because it truly does pay to go to college and you are seen as that much more “valuable” to the company (especially an engineer). However, if a company you want to work for/at does not offer significant pay differences between bachelors and masters degrees (

Computer Science is the king of all IT majors, it is literally one where you'll study all aspects of computers, including networks, database, algorithms, etc. And you can choose in which one you want to specialize and focus in. So i wouldnt trust those specific majors (data science, cybersecurity, sotware engineering) to be the best option...
