    Nice vid,but for the bearings install try to freeze the outer jacket of the bearing and get the install place hot like this it will go so much easier, belive me no more hammers👍

    Should be using moly grease for the cv's and inside the swivel hub assembly.

    How did you do the shims? Did you have a force/spring tension gauge to set the pre-load on the kingpins?

  • @VertxGamingYT
    @VertxGamingYT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do u remember what black paint you used? It looks
    Mint

  • @s3uoq
    @s3uoq 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Help me understand here please, do those kingpin bearings need to be shimmed to correct preload? Is that black paint on the brake rotors? Enjoyed the video, just confused on those two points mentioned.

    • @AlongTheWayDownunder
      @AlongTheWayDownunder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah they need to be, I haven't done it as it needs to be pulled apart again in the near future. I am replacing the grease with molly grease and my tool for tighten the wheel bearings has finaly arrived so I will be doing a part 2 you could say, in up coming videos 👌
      The brake discs come black like that from RDA.

    • @s3uoq
      @s3uoq 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlongTheWayDownunder Ah sweet thanks for answering that. I didn't know you could get black rotors, I just fitted new DBA fronts to my GU wagon. I need to do my kingpin bearings and shims because everything else been replaced and still have a steering wobble between 60 and 80kph.

    • @AlongTheWayDownunder
      @AlongTheWayDownunder  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah neither did I, they looked cool being black so I bought them to see how they go.
      Check your panhard bushes as well? Can be the cause of death wobbles too. Also some need shims some don't too so could need a little adjustment 👌

    • @s3uoq
      @s3uoq 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlongTheWayDownunder yeah cheers. Panhard rod bushes all good. Absolutely everything has been done except kingpin bearings in my front end. Spent thousands on it for stuff that needed doing anyway but to also try and eliminate the wobble. Some mechanic even told me the cheap dynamic steel wheels I had on it weren't perfect and that's the cause along with badly worn tyres so once I needed new tyres I lashed out on new alloy wheels for it and problem still there 😔

      its old tech.. uni,s are better.. stronger.. but now you can get RCV,s. 1100$, per side..

    did you happen to have all the torque settings saved somewhere?
    just about to do mine
    thanks

    • @AlongTheWayDownunder
      @AlongTheWayDownunder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey mate yeah I do, I was going to touch on it in a later video now that I have the wheel bearing tool to tighten properly.
      Manual says, 167-196nm then spin wheel both directions
      Back it off completely. Then tighten to 3-5 NM. Spin again both directions. Do it twice.
      Then tighten back up to 167-196nm
      🤙 good luck mate

    Is the GQ patrol front axle beefier than an 80series axle ?

  • @davemackay3206
    @davemackay3206 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Love the video! Great breakdown!
    Just wondering, is there another way to insert the outer rings for the top and bottom cap bearings besides tapping them in with a hammer?

    • @AlongTheWayDownunder
      @AlongTheWayDownunder  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate! Really appreciate it!
      The workshop manual says to use a tubular drift, but they can be very expensive to buy as they usually come in kits.
      A hammer is probably the easiest and cheapest option if you have good aim with it. Or you Could use a socket the same size as the bearing cup with a sacrificial extension bit to hammer in.

      @demostan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlongTheWayDownunder Might sound weird but could you chuck the tight parts into ice before installation? A miniscule amount of shrinkage to prevent any damage that tapping could cause

    • @AlongTheWayDownunder
      @AlongTheWayDownunder  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could give it a go? I havent done anything like that before but would be interesting!

    • @proxypanda4156

      Mate, Absolutely chuck the caps into the freezer for 1 hour. When I installed my shells, I basically hand pressed them in, and tapped with a hammer with a piece of aluminium between the hammer and the race shell. (Aluminium is softer therefore it wont damage your bearings) (Freezing the caps will slightly shrink them making the fitting a lot easier)

      *Liquid nitrogen
      (Freezer if you can't get your hands on any liquid nitrogen)
      * Heat up the housing with a propane torch or oxy what ever you prefer of know how to handle better.
      When installed give it a slight tap with a hammer and bearing punch. you'll hear a sound like hitting an anvil with a hammer and you'll know it's seated.
      This is just for piece of mind to know it's home.
      This is how I used to do wheel bearings, final drives, transfer boxes on lager machinery and small projects.

    Hello, is the interior of the swivel hub been painted? Is it safe to do this with a rust prevention paint?

    • @AlongTheWayDownunder
      @AlongTheWayDownunder  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will be fine if something is rubbing on the inside of the swivel hub housing to disturb the paint, something has gone extremely wrong.

    Hey mate might have missed it but how did you get the king pin bearings off the old spindle? Nice vid mate enjoyed watching although it was painful seeing you install wheel bearing lock nut with a screw driver! My kit came with the tool so now i have 2. might just throw one in the car for road side repairs i guess.

      Hey mate, I have another episode of stripping down the diff, a few episodes back if you're keen to watch. And yes I havent torqued them up to spec yet as I bought my wheel bearing tool with my PSR suspension 4 and a half months ago, still hasnt turned up yet..... I will be pulling it apart the torquing it to spec in the finaly assembly video, plus I need more weight on the diffs to torque them. Almost lost the diff off the table trying to haha.
      Thanks mate 🤙

      You can with out, just makes things alot easier. Woulld be hard work on the hammer with out one. Only a cheap 200 press does the trick
