- If you are interested in joining law enforcement, you will need to understand what is included in the background investigation and how best to handle each part.
What I find discouraging is seeing people that are so worried about the hiring process they never apply. And then time slips by and they get older, have a family etc. The majority of people I've seen do this would most likely have been great cops. The specific disqualifiers and so forth vary vastly from agency to agency. I'll say this, if I could get hired you most likely could aswell. The department's aren't going to come knocking on your door one day and offer you a job. Be a go getter and apply. Take all steps seriously. It can be a very exhausting process particularly if you're going through multiple processes. Good luck!
I’m heavily considering applying at my local sheriff’s department, of course I’m going to be completely honest about my past, etc. I’m worried to waste my time though, I’ve driven numerous times under the affect of marijuana, however I’ve never been incarcerated. Should I follow through?

It depends on the agency if it requires a degree but I've seen a lot of departments move towards that as a requirement. One of the reasons is due to a college degree has pretty much become the new high school diploma. Pre 2008 financial collapse having a degree wasn't needed for a lot of jobs. After the financial collapse high school graduates couldn't find jobs so they went to college and now having a degree is very common, most certainly more common than when I graduated high school. Becoming a correctional officer can be a good way to get into law enforcement and eventually out to the patrol side of it. There are some pitfalls though with that route, most commonly people get comfortable with where they're at as a correctional officer that they never try to go out for patrol. There a bunch of other caveats with that route too.
@@zacapoo There 2 ways you can do this. 1 - you never try and spend the rest of your life wondering if you could've gotten hired. 2 - Apply and go through the process and either get hired or rejected but at least with this option if you don't get hired you'll know. So my advice, apply and apply to a bunch of departments. I've seen it take a few people with issues in their past get hired but they stuck with it and never gave up. One of those people it took 5 years to get hired at the ripe young age of 50.
Helping the community & understand the people .
The key is to ensure that the companies job application is filled out accurately and completely. If you embellish on your resume, be sure you leave this off the job application. Its the job application that the hiring employer is looking at and going off of.
Does the BI call previous military units (as it says to list military assignments under previous employment history), none of my supervisors are there anymore?

I’m a foreigner and my fiancée works for the US government. He said he needs an approval for our marriage and it’s why I must go through a process, then an interview too. He’s requiring me the SF 85P - Questionnaire of Public Trust Position. Had little debate with some people about my employment history, how I can put into words the years I worked without signed work card or a formal contract, I was a promotional model. Does it counts as a job for them? Somehow, it makes me sad and ends making me feel inferior to people who have formal jobs.
if you are foreign then how to get intelligence analyst (defence department) job .. for this post you have to be a citizen of that country. so what are the options for this post on private and public sector?!
My department is hiring 6 officers and I’m 6th out of 25 on the chiefs list. I was the first to turn in my background investigation packet and the suspense is killing me.

What if you are 40 years old, never owned a car, haven't driven a car in a few years, lived alone for most of your life, the high school you graduated from 24 years ago no longer has records, you're self-employed, your relatives only see you a few times a year, you only have a few close friends, and your ex girlfriends are cop-haters who won't let you give the PD their contact info, but you have a clean record, no alcohol or drugs because you're a prude, good credit, and never lose your temper?

Hi Sir, I have a question , I was checking my PHS for California Corrections and I noticed that I marked No to question Have you ever been fired form a job ?I think I marked No by accident. Whatever , I wrote down the reason I got fired from that job? I never tried to hide anything. I was trying to disclose this after my fingerprints day , but they told me wait until your get a background investigator.Do you think I will be in trouble?

Not trying to be a cop but actually EMT its probably a similar BI though. I got charged with possesion of .5 grams of marijuana when i was a freshman in highschool. Think that would fail me? Havent had any run ins with the law since. Although on a road trip my friend got a ticket driving my car EDIT- the POM charge has also since been expunged. Should I even mention it?
When I went through the background check for a state police agency you did not have to divulge any arrest when you were a minor particularly if it was expunged. HOWEVER you still had to admit to the crime in your criminal background check. I've been a EMT for over 16 years and I never had a background check as rigorous as a police department one would be. I wouldn't worry about the ticket. Just explain what happened. I smoked marijuana several times in high school and admitted to it and still got hired.
Is it true that they can have a warrant for social media history? I heard they can grab deleted posts and stuff and I had some dumb shit when I was 15-16.

In my opinion it's better to be honest than trying to hide something .
They just want to know who you are. We all have done some dumbshit in our life. So, just be honest.
So I’m C/O in Florida and will eventually try and get into a sheriffs office or city police department once I get a few years of experience and fix my finances. My only worry is that since I’ve had a suspended license for a failure to pay a fine, it would be a disqualification. In your experience would that be something that would automatically disqualify someone or is that something that’s on a case to case basis?
Probably going to be a case by case basis. It'll depend on what the fine was for, was it a moving or non moving violation and the circumstances that led to it not being paid and how long you were potentially driving knowingly or unknowingly on a suspended license. Departments will sometimes list their automatic DQ's and none of what you said is usually on that list unless it was a felony or certain types of misdemeanors which is probably unlikely if you got a fine instead of a summons. I'm not sure on Florida POST standards for hiring so I'd suggest looking those up. Could also ask an officer that's in the hiring/recruitment unit (if the department has that). Apply anyway then you'll know for certain but as I've said in other comments on this video, a DQ for one agency may not be a DQ for another agency.

I have a question. If you were caught shoplifting when you were ten years old and are now 27, will that show in your background or will it have been taken off? Will the BI see that? I was told after a certain amount of years it will be erased but idk if BI can still see it. I'm from CA. Please any answers would help. Thank you.
I realize this is a year late, but even if it's somehow still on your record and you were actually arrested for it....you were ten. That is beyond even the "teenagers do stupid shit" grace that they grant people who had minor nonviolent offenses and have cleaned up their act. If it was an actual arrest, then don't hide it - as long as the last time you did anything shady was when you were a literal child, you're probably going to be fine.

Hello everyone I passed my cdcr written exam on 4/26/2021 and am worried about the upcoming background investigation. I made a mistake in my life that Im ashamed of and am paying for I was arrested in Nov 2020 for Domestic Violence and charged in March 2021 for DV as a misdemeanor. I just wanna know if I can get hired with that on my record. Thanks and have a good day.
Douglas - agency is different, so don't give up. DV is a very serious issue for law enforcement and that fact that it happened recently is not good. Time heals all wounds.
Question- my record in every aspect is clean other than my credit score. I had started of good then lost my job which caused me financial hardship that led to poor credit. I recently enrolled an a debt consolidation program to pay of the creditors in a certain period of time. Will that help me in any way showing that I’m trying to resolve the situation? Atm I’m the process of hearing from my BI with LASD.

GT performance I unfortunately withdrew . My Background investigator suggested me to wait out a year to work on my credit and get solid work history. But I know that I sooner than later will join and know what I need to work on to get hired on. I’ll be reapplying mid next year. GoodLuck to you sir
I'm process for corrections department in Rancho Cucamonga California, so if I have a collection in my credit report from boxing gym . Somebody could tell me if I'm going to be disqualified for that collection that appears on my credit report?
Law Enforcement Preparation wow your answer shocks me because it is wrong. According to POST standards, any collections on your credit MUST be cleared up. No grey area about it.
Or at least establish minimum payments and show all the receipts to the investigator to prove that you are getting it done..
I have my background investigation tomorrow for the LASD. I was wondering if my arrest from 5 years ago would be an automatic dq. My ex gf framed me claiming I hit her and they booked me. She dropped the charges and was let go with no bail or charge. Will that affect me ? I'm 24 now. That's all I ever done bad. Oh and I took the polygraph before this. Idk why they made me do that first

Im worried about my education I have stints in several community colleges and I was dismissed by a few for poor grades but I eventually got my degree I then was accepted to a state university but they ended up turning me down because I forgot to disclose some transcripts that weren’t pertinent how bad would this look on me?
I believe I’m in the same boat as you. When I started college, it was a community college. My first semester was horrible. I failed most of my classes. I ended up moving, so I took classes at another college. Since most of my grades were horrible, I didn’t think it mattered for me to transfer my credits. I ended up getting more serious about my grades and started doing a lot better. I didn’t want those bad grades to effect my GPA is why I didn’t transfer them. There was nothing to transfer anyways lol. Everyone is telling me that the polygraph test is inaccurate. People are telling me that honest people fail the test all the time because they got nervous during the test. They told the truth, but they still failed. I think that’s where I might be screwed too because I never taken a polygraph before. It’s going to intimidate me and make me nervous for no reason. That could cause me to fail the polygraph even when I’m telling the truth

The best source of information ever is an ex-girlfriend and ex-wife. They know that they may an ax to grind but can weed out what is real and not.

How are they able to pull up people you know, but didn't list?
Very simple: Most government agencies or large companies ask you to list "3 or 4 friends" as references...... They could not care less about your "friends", as they know what they will say. The first thing they ask is "Can you tell me some other people Gary is friends with".... and so on and so on. During "field interviews" they will also ask neighbors and former co-workers "So, who were some of Gary's friends" etc.

If you paid taxes, Yes. The IRS and the SSA will have a record of your employment history (tax deductions) from day 1.
Dear Skeptical, 2 things to remember: Both private companies and government agencies have invested a lot of money in you by the time they do a background investigation, assuming you have passed the "pre-screening" requirements. They really want to "weed you in" as opposed to "weed you out" and evaluate the "whole person". Most private companies are interested in the past 7 years (employment or otherwise) but government agencies have access to anything that is in a government computer. Personally, I NEVER contact HR depts., as they have a "canned" "hired on terminated on" format for liability reasons. I always try to contact immediate supervisors as they MAY be inclined to give me the real scoop. If you were arrested for "stealing or something" that will be found in a criminal search, employer or not.
what if u didn't sign any waiver with first police agency and failed on the background check can they still share information with new one u are applying for even if u didn’t sign any waiver with first one but the new one u did
Don't think about "waivers." Each new BI will gather whatever facts they can get their hands on and make their own decision. Each step of the hiring process requires that you be truthful in your disclosures.

Tom - I am not an expert on this and have no direct experience using online resource. But there are many available. They don't cost a lot, depending upon how much stuff you ask for. Search the web. Here is a good starting point - www.recordgone.com/articles/obtain-criminal-records.htm
When I got to the office, my background investigator told me that he would review my backgrounds document and that he understands that sometimes you forget to write things that it was time to clear everything up and also there are some tricky questions in the document. So we started to review everything, he started recording me with a tape recorder, I think I made a mistake in the questions about the drug experience. I told him about my experience with marijuana in 2014 at a party, the problem was that after that he did a similar question Have you ever been around people who use drugs? and I said no, that's when he corrected me he told me that he had to say yes because when he used marijuana at a party, of course, there were other people smoking marijuana.Another mistake I made, I think it was when I did not write down my trolley infraction which is when you get on the train without paying the ticket, I have two tickets, one in 2015 and one in 2018, but I went to court and paid for the infractions, the problem was that I just wrote down the 2018 fine and he asked why you didn't write down the 2015 fine. Seriously, I forgot to write it down. He noticed my 2015 ticket because it is the second time that I apply to this department and in my first document that I delivered I wrote about my 2015 ticket. In the end, he told me that if you fail you will receive a letter by mail and if you pass the next step is the polygraph. Do you think I'm in trouble?

I've been dinged twice by CDCR in the background stage for my driving record. I have had a clean driving record the past 4 years but tickets and what not are still on there. Is it good to go through thr process still for CHP?

Ok so I want to know exactly how they can find out if I did drugs? I’ve done MJ and steroids but how exactly will they find out? I did them while in the Army and no one found out and the people I did them with I put down as references so they have my back. As you already know, the only way would be via a blood or urine test, or if someone in your past spilled the beans.
Law Enforcement Prep That’s what I thought! But I was just curious because everyone always says they find out so don’t lie but in my case it’s basically impossible. Obviously I regret doing it for health reasons and risking addiction but I’m good now and look forward to entering this amazing profession.

I wonder what may be the case if during a background check, the applicant is truthful in everything but several of his/her references lied about his/her history to slander the name. Whose fault will that be at that point?

But if the individual is a sociopath, wouldn't they plan ahead by thinking of those naive people who would actually help cover for them, then only list them and also contact those people ahead of time to tell them about it?

Or what they will find out?I'm going, to be honest with you, I don't know if you could give me any advice in 2013 applied for an agency for cleaning, that agency use cleans the sheriff buildings.Even, that I didn't get a job thru sheriff agency they took my fingerprints to work there. The problem was that I forgot to mention it.Do you think they will find out?
Bryan - they probably will find out, but it should not be a problem. It's OK to forget things like that - it would not be good if your fingerprints were on file for some criminal investigation . Relax!

Usually the fingerprinting is late in the hiring process - not sure hwre you are. If so, the purpose is to clear criminal records not job history. So, relax.

I'm just getting started, the California Department of Corrections first takes your fingerprints and then begins to look into everything you wrote on your phs form. I'm nervous because is my dream work for any law enforcement department.

That same thing happened to me while I was in the USMC and happened again Air Force boot camp for pretty much the same reason but that was a couple years ago. Do you think I stand a chance in any law enforcement agency?
I’ve had multiple license suspensions due to unpaid tickets, and bench warrants for no shows to ticket violations, I got a minor summons for possession of marijuana other than that record has nothing on it, do you think the NYPD can still consider me?

Law Enforcement Preparation Hey, Oliver from Miami here. Clean background. Driving record a couple tickets first from 2007 illegal left turn, speeding in 2012, suspended insurance/license maybe twice in 2015/2016 last ticket was careless driving in 2018 last year, resulting in accident on the highway. Not at fault but blamed as my fault since I hit the car in front of me by the back BUT only because I got hit first. I had stopped right before hitting the car and 2seconds after I’m hit causing me to hit the car in front! Job hopping in my younger days! Last time was 4 years ago! Credit is definitely being fixed next year! Would I be a good candidate? Please be completely honest and thank you very much

not on the lease, but I did get some mail and help with rent. Do I still put that place under residence history? Also, there was a job I had called pizza world , I was paid cash hand, under the table. I wasn't on payroll. Do I still add the place to my work history? I'm excited to be in law enforcement! Just passed the pallet B and physical test!

Yes you can. It is not an automatic disqualifier. Final decision of course, depends upon local agency, your attitude and level of competition for the job openings.

What kind of Military "problems " will cause the investigation to seize? Something like a Dishonorable Discharge or something as simple as an Article 15?
@@lawenforcementprep884 Thank you for responding so quickly. I received an Article 15 back in 2012 for having a few beers in a part of the Army base I wasn't supposed to. It wasn't a DUI, I wasn't arrested, I was just given a citation.

What if you have one not-at-fault traffic collision on record and an at-fault traffic collision on record how do you think the investigator will perceive that and will it something that is disqualifying. Also, what if you didn't have good grades in Highschool , but you got good grades in College how will the investigator percieve that?

Does job hopping and leaving some jobs without two week notice affect you greatly,and I also left out two or three jobs out of the job application because I work there for such a small mount Of time

It was 2 jobs, a grocery store job and McDonalds job, both of which I had during teen years. I feel like why'd a police job even care about those experiences.

The world's biggest idiot knows not to do that obviously. put in a great 5-10 years then you'll be able to switch out for a better agency. Do you still need a background check if you already have a public trust clearance with homeland security?
Absolutely Yes, especially if you apply for another job that requires clearance. Background Investigation is always ongoing.
If you have a Secret Clearance, it will be reconducted every 10 years.
If you have Top Secret or SCI, every 5 years.

what about the background check of a foreign person that comes to work in the usa?
You basically have to go through the same thing - but it takes longer to get records from you schools, reference checks, etc.

"Expunged" records do not exist in California. Expunged records are available to the public as well. Private background investigators such as myself can see them, but cannot use them on a report to a potential employer. Government agencies can and will access ALL civil and criminal records: Purged, expunged, sealed, juvenile...

The drill seargent begun saying that I didnt understand English. They decided to send me back to home because they wanted to send me to English school to Texas.When I went to the National Guard office , the sergeants told me that it was weird , that they send me back to home because even I was talking with them in English.My recruiter took me to meps to take the English second language exam to send me to English school in Texas , but I didnt qualify because I get higher score.My MOES in the army was 19 delta, but my recruiter asked me if I would like to change my 19 delta for 11 bravo to no have the same experience that I had when I went to basic training I said yes. My recruiter was trying to make a negociation my MOES , but they said to my recruiter that my process could delay untill 2 years . the best way was get discharged for 6 months . I get general discharge , but I will come back in July. Do you think we this discharged it is going to be hard to apply for police officer? Im worry about it

I had a "hit and run" when I was 17 although it was not added to my criminal nor driving record due to the very minor damage and being that i didnt even know i hit the vehicle. I've searched to my records to try and find it and it isn't there so I didn't put it on my application. Should I mention it in my background check tomorrow?

Fa Fa No not during the background check, but I did explain the situation during my polygraph. I didn't want to risk lying about anything. Im hoping me explaining that situation during the poly and not to the background investigator doesn't affect my chances of being hired.

Fa Fa yea man the questions were general like "have the police ever been called to your residence" and " Have you ever stolen money from anyone or place of business?" But I passed it and the psychology test. I actually have an interview with the chief tomorrow.

I'm 28 and have been drug free for 9 years, I have never been arrested or had DUIs, however the hardest drug I've ever used was LSD a few times in my teen years. can this be forgiven? I really don't want to lie on the polygraph about LSD I've confessed to marijuana usage in high school but I'm afraid LSD while it may not disqualify me will make them say thanks but no thanks. what should I do?
Law Enforcement Preparation also when I was 15 my ex girlfriend told her therapist that I sexually assaulted her, which is completely false. the therapist had to notify the parents and police by law and there was an investigation done on me. she was a complete nutcase who has been to psych wards and ultimately the DA declined to file any charges. how bad will this hurt me?
I found out when applying for a ride along at the agency that had done the investigation on me in my home city that this will make my chances of being an officer slim to none. it devastated me that a false allegation can ruin this for me. is it true?

They will ask about all drug use, alcohol, all traffic related tickets, license problems, they want all info on where you lived since the age of 16. All jobs you have had. They will call your references. Credit check is a big one. Remain consistent in all answers. And be honest in everything. I have had the initial application online, the paper app which is huge, i had to collect my own background info. From all states and counties i worked with, i went through the polygraph, then had an interview with a detective, now im up for my oral board interview.

My friend who's in the academy now after going through so much shit during the hiring process was telling me stories of how people who got connections in the department get hired in so quick and easy and were able to skip through so many steps in their hiring process.

Hi there, I have a question for you, I got disqualification from the corrections officer because a long time ago in 2013 I join a Boxing Gym, but like my English was too poor I didn't realize I was signing a contract for a year. Then when I lost the job I decided to leave the boxing gym, I went to my bank to avoid my collection payment. I know it was a contract, but I was mad at the time because they never told me it was a contract until I leave the gym and they still were taking money from my bank account. Do you think I'm in big trouble for my future?
Bryan - I don't think it will be a problem. Most credit issues are dropped from your report after 7 years. A lot depends upon how your report looks more recently. Demonstrate that you have learned good lessons and are a better man for it today.
