4 Rotor AWD FD RX7 | Rob Dahms 1000HP+ Quad Rotor Build [TECH TALK]

- An AWD RX7 is exciting in itself, but a Quad-Rotor build as well, that was too much for Andre to not take a look during his latest SEMA trip.
If you haven’t heard of Rob Dahm and his Mazda FD RX7 build, you have now. This has been 5 years in the making so far with lots of ups and downs as well as plan changes along the way, but at SEMA Rob presented a running car so we’re excited to so hopefully see it out and about in 2020.
Brotherly rivalry led Rob to consider an AWD/4WD build and with support and encouragement from Ian Steward of ASD Motorsports which built Ken Blocks Gymkhana 7 ‘Hoonicorn’ AWD Mustang. A lot of the details of the Hoonicorn build were shared with Rob, but in the end, it wasn’t compatible with this application particularly when it came to fitting a passenger seat.
Due to concerns with cast components, Rob sourced a billet 4 rotor from Carl Thompson which was the spare for a build of his we have featured previously (linked below). It has some unique features which we’re excited to learn more about as time goes on and A-B testing is planned in relation to tuning and exhaust components in the near future too.
The car runs an R32 GTR transfer box off the back of a Holinger RD6, Winters Quick Change rear differential, Adaptronic M6000 ECU, Garrett 106mm turbo, Clearview oil filtration system along with Ti Automotive a dual brushless pump setup.
Also discussed are the reasons for the tube frame in relation to requirement, or just preference, cast vs billet 4 rotor setups and what the plan is from here.

Well done to Rob and his team, excited for all of you 😎- Taz.
I'm so glad a person with real knowledge and real questions interviewed Rob Dahm.
TurboDieselDan I loved every second of his interview. Questions that drew out the parts I’m genuinely excited about. The TH-cam side of it is awesome. Big numbers. Craziness. But I love the details. The engineering. Glad HP Academy does too
Rob and this guy know so much and i love it because i learn so much
My thoughts exactly! You RARELY see that nowadays.
Man, I've been watching this channel for a while, besides his Kiwi accent (which I've gotten used to, so it isn't really that bad at all), he asks the right questions, always polite, and sticks to his questions without wasting time... Honestly, top interviewer, one of the best I've seen on TH-cam for a while... I really need to find out his name though...
Best interview with him for sure!
I understand why people hoard secrets in competitive circles, but Rob has the OG car guy spirit reincarnated. Beautiful work!
Love your content man

@@alexstromberg7696 So you are saying....they should just come out of the closet?
Man that Rob guy looks like he genuinely loves his job and what he does when he speaks, we need more guys with his energy in the car community/car industry. I don’t really even mess with Rotaries but I’m definitely giving this guy a follow!
Daniel Anderson he has a lot of haters
but they don’t know much about him so they sound really low iq most of the time when they talk crap about him, they are just jealous of what he has. At least rob has ambitions right!? 👍
@@CorruptInfinityOfficial Pretty sure those low IQs is an LS car swap
what a time to pick to follow Rob, as the 4 rotor has awoken it calls to fellow machine heads through the power of the force (and Doritos) welcome brother.
You definitely won’t regret the guy is awesome and his content is great
For the people wondering, the 1662hp dyno video that Rob is referring to is the Queen Street Racing BMW's quad-rotor from almost a decade ago. 👍 That motor ended up putting that car into the 6s but was very unreliable as it was done using cast rotors and modified cast housings.
I’ve watched a few of Rob’s videos in the past.
Great that he shares all the R&D and successes, and most of all...
How refreshing it is that he has the self confidence to invite and allow the world to view the failures as well.
Refreshing Indeed !
Rob Dahm may not have the technical prowess of many of HPA's guests but damn does he have vision and passion. I understand when people get frustrated by his mistakes, I do as well, but they're a consequence of somebody willing to work outside of their comfort zone in order to accomplish something exceptional.
You can't learn if you never do. He is still learning as cars are a hobby for him, not a profession
His channel is especially great for people with the same kind of knowledge as him, because you are learning with him which is nice
The cash flow and labor involved in this thing is insane
@Adam Ewart Well when he needs quick cash he sells shirts.
His last run of red Dahm had a 1000 print limited run, sold at $25 per, and sold out in a day.
you can do the math...
Million dollars. That's on the low end what it cost ti develop a vehicle..
@@Imleocalm i think hes at 500K
What you have to keep in mind is that Rob was flat out for about 70 hrs or so by this point finishing up as much as possible and then going to LV. I'm amazed he managed to say anything intelligible.
thank you. That was the most intense period of my life haha
Some haters here, but if someone can self fund a project like this without a hedge fund I'm impressed. I for one find him down to earth and honest.....we're not going to like every human on the planet, and I haven't met him personally! So who knows....
...I spy, with my little eye, a "little" purple clutch...
Rob Dahm, the "open source" of rotary engines. awesome work bru
16:00 guy in the background realization that Rob dahm is in front of him hahaha
haha how awesome!
"Hey, that's Rob Dahm over there"
"Oh, shit"
Perfect timing, Rob just started dynoing the car this week!
watching Rob because of the RX-7 built.. but the biggest part that nobody looks at the car hobby is the persistence the passion you have to get projects like this completed.. this building has been one of the most challenging builds that have ever seen and that in the engineering standpoint for the up and downs you go with a built like this the mentality that you have to have to see it through. to man the legend rob dahm
Incredible interview. Very rare for the interviewer to have such in depth knowledge.
Best car project in the 2020's
2016-2026
Robs 4 rotor build is one of the fascinating car things in youtube right now.
A really good and honest interview with perfect questions watched it all the way through no skipping and was worth it for the knowledge
I also follow both of you. Thanks for the interview. ❤️
Glad I watched this video, thought I'd know it all already from watching Rob's videos but Andre raised some good questions
Rob just ran it on the dyno, made like 550hp on 8lbs of boost at 6,800rpm, he plans on turning it up to 45lbs of boost and reaching 10,000rpm. I fully expect this thing to do rolling burnouts all day long.
Just hit 1000hp at all 4wheels and on a mustang dyno.
@@DjStanceZ less than 8k RPM
I figure he will gain another 600hp as he increases to 10,000 RPM. At @15psi, so if he runs 30psi of boost at 10k RPM he should be able to make over 3000 hp! Scary part is that he actually needs a bigger turbo that what he currently has to make that much power.
Hell yeah to him for rocking that Michigan plate with pride. Michigan love
The right interviewer for the job. Fantastic video!
Just like HP academy , Rob Dahm is high on my TH-cam list of contents!!😁
Cheers for having us high on your list =D - Taz.
1000 hp finally hit today 😭
The timing of this video and Robs milestone video (most recent video) is uncanny! ;)
Rob's shirt is so bold like he breaks the norm of swapping engine
Congratulations Rob for this awesome built. That was a big nightmare for you and the team but you never give up and realised your dream.
Dahm chanel is the best chanel. Always waiting for new material from Rob and his friends
Robs the man. Love his drive and energy
As mentioned in the video, this is Carl Thompsons old 26B 4-Rotor build that lives on in part within Robs RX7: th-cam.com/video/OyLgaSwr5LA/w-d-xo.html - Taz.
Cool car but I remain a skeptic of the practicality of a 4 rotor Considering there isn't any aftermarket seals for the rotors themselves they're still using stock parts/rotor seals
That's sooooooo fcukn Cool, I recently seen him in a v8 on Hoonigans and thought WTF?!!!!....Where's the Aristo lol now I know 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 chur "F4T80Y" and chur "DOCILE"
@RapidFire We have a video lined up of that build from SEMA as well. Carl has good taste for sure - Taz.
@Frequency I don't think much about a 4-rotor AWD RX7 build will tick any kind of practicality boxes to be fair, however it ticks a few other boxes in the awesomeness column haha - Taz.
@@hpa101 Yeah Rob inspired me to research rotaries and their heritage is actually really awesome. Banned in some forms of racing. That's for a reason. It's amazing the engine design wasn't licenced by other big manufacturers. They sound so amazing. Maybe Rob's mission will change people's minds.
Another great video from HPA! Amazing... can't wait to see this beast on the road!
Been a while, but well worth the wait :-)
Been following Rob's build for some years, with his other projects also being worth watching - he shows pretty much everything, mistakes, frustrations and the joy when sh*t comes together and works, as he says in the interview.
Diff' ratios should be the same if they're that close - I expect it to be rounding variations - easy way to check is a tooth count.
Wilbert Anaya tuned a 26B that was on the New Ian long time ago and pushed 2,360WHP to the rears with a Microtech LT-16s ECU and I’m pretty sure he can tune for more HP now. Let me know and I set you up with him.
Damn, what a dream video, Two of my most favorite TH-cam personalities Andre and Rob...This video flowed so well too! Fkn Awesome!!!
How can someone dislike this?
People get tired of hearing for the last 5 years about this its old news and it will be another 2 years b4 we see real launches
Epic build and in time will be crazy unlock option for video games in future I think
Rob just dynoed it again 1014 AWHP!
Woooo!
I just want the dyno vid 😣
th-cam.com/video/uO1782B6RZw/w-d-xo.html at least this is what hes trying to beat
Hes currently in the process of dyno, his next couple of videos you might see it.
Coincidental that HP Academy just posted this the same day I hit the awd dyno. More than 1000 AWHP on a mustang dyno and called it there so i can beat the shit out of it on the road and get used to how violent it is
@@RobDahm cant wait to see it
@@RobDahm cant wait to hear the music coming from that beast
That’s such a majestic color!
it is crazy how far the car has gone in two years.
Awesome owner, surreal build. Major props!
Nice video. Rob is a great guy to follow
Best videos! Thanks for sharing. Can’t wait to see this thing finally complete!
Rob might not have a finished car, but can't hate a man for doing something that's never been done
All Things GTR he just released a dyno video the same day this video came out, he broke 1000hp and 782ft/lbs on an awd mustang dyno, said he’s going to keep it there while he gets used to that much power on the street and continues upgrading the car, then he will turn it up again!
Damn it @robdahm enough with the hand gestures!! He understands English! 😂
Andre & Rob look like they are brothers.
Don’t thumbs down this video without watching previous videos of this custom rotor build.
A can-do spirit and the cubic dollars to make it happen. Love it.
So Rob how much Billet do you plan on incorporating into your build ?
Rob: Yes
What a wild car!
Great interview!
Been waiting for this!
Hope you enjoyed it =) - Taz.
Legend has it, that it’s still on the way to the dyno....
the funny thing is that when you posted this comment it was either on the trailer or it just arrived at the dyno
Mr Turbo haha probably so. I just seen the dyno video earlier
Wooo I've been waiting for this
Daddy Dahm Baby....! Yeah!!!!!
"man im seeing double"

great content on an original design car. Rob is an awsome content creator as well. dont forget to check out his channel for updates on the FD! Rob Dahm
Yes sir! I just pinned the latest post from Rob, exciting stuff - Taz.
BEAUTIFUL.......
The 26b will have no troubles over 1000hp but im more interested how quickly it gets out of the hole 60 feet !
Trev Ohlson this one is not a race car, but down here in Florida, USA the 20B’s do .97s 60ft times and close to 2,000HP doing 6.08s in the 1/4mi.
The Ultimate Frankenstein
Rob's tuning today....co-incidence? He did mention that you were helping him in some way :D
Just a coincidence, excited to see how the team get on as well :) - Taz.
I did also buy the tuning package and it filled in my knowledge gaps considerably. So Andre was there in spirit haha. Might beg for his help on the engine dyno as we go for record numbers
@@RobDahm pt1 made me piss myself. Make pt2 shit myself

Do I spy Peter from Speed Academy in the background during the dry sump talk at the end?
Great spotting. :)
He lives in Michigan??
Love that RX7. Detest Rob Dahm with a passion.
Lol.. Why? He ain't so bad. Adam LZ is a moron I can't handle.
Haha I can’t hate this comment. I get it totally. But I would rather you like the car given the choice. That’s my obsession my life’s work. My personality is not. And it probably explains why I’m single lol.
@@RobDahm Well admittedly you did just score some points with me for being so personal. I suppose I better downgrade that rather than stick to my guns like some inhuman clown. I used to watch your channel then you became really annoying so had to unsub. Maybe it is me? Thanks for the reply and really hope to see that thing finished this year.
@@phoenixrising7047 no its not you. Its a tough choice to make at this size of channel. I personally geek out about the details. But those dont make views. The all caps clickbait full billet 1000awhp is what helps fund the project. so its a fine line to do just enough to help afford the dream car. But the other insanely weird thing is video content and lenght. people kept asking me to make longer videos. I refused for years. Sure enough, people watch those videos more and longer. Resulting in channel growth and increased revenue. I will never chase money like many do, but i will try to make my efforts as effective as possible. especially when it helps afford cars that have no other way of being accomplished. And since im running without jaret, my video style is more terse and choppy making it a downgrade in watchability to people like me who dont actually watch episodic videos.
Go the Adaptronic ;)

someone get this man a turbo speed sensor.
This isn't an RX-7. This is an insane tube chassis that just so happens to have body panels from an RX-7.

So Rob, what are you doing in regards to headgasket sealin.... Oh wait....
Y'all got another mention in Rob's latest video, around the 2:10 mark - th-cam.com/video/4P-F4kJEeSk/w-d-xo.html
We might have to get him into some of that course material if he dives into a permanent loom build, but his enthusiasm is contagious eh! - Taz.
He's a nice guy, still plenty of things that could improve on that build though.

Most 4x4 trucks have a split gear ratio like 3.55 rear and 3.54 front
Hi!
Why, doesnt someone build a rotary motor bigger than the standard being used now, and 6 rotors design the rotors twice the size a billet block, is there a limit to the size and cant go any bigger or know has designed one, isnt it all about more power and speed,it would cost alot to design and machine, but technology and cnc machines make it actually possible to do, would it be to much power and not usable destroying drive train?
It would kind of defeat the purpose of being a physically smaller, less capacity engine that makes more power than v8s. Although a 2l capacity or something around that size would be interesting to see a difference.
Absolutely useless for drag racing, that's what I love about Rob's build. I want to see this car at Neuberger Ring!!!!!
Yo tazz rob looks just like you bro...
Rob is challenged and HE NEEDS YOUR HELP. Or it will be another 5 years. This would be a great project for you. I gave up watching his channel. You need to tune that car for him :)
