This is the part of DARE that doesn’t compute for me re: highway driving - aren’t I indeed more in danger going high speeds behind the wheel and having a very intense panic attack? I get dizzy and get tunnel vision and my arms start to tingle and I fear I’m going to lose control of the car - which IS a real danger. Can you explain how I can “go spaghetti” and run towards the intense sensations when I’m on a busy highway? **Thank you so much**. This is a really frustrating experience and I’m crying about it all the time - especially as I used to absolutely love driving and the adventures that driving could take me on.

    Notes -
0:33 danger vs discomfort, anxiety lies in the resistance to thoughts, feelings, sensations etc
1:11 run towards is active by showing your brain there's no danger

How do you actively seek more (run towards) dizziness from anxiety? By spinning yourself?

How would I float through symptoms that persist all day? It’s so confusing to me. I need to go back to work.

It's very hard to do, but it's easier to believe. This is actually similar to a concept created by a great psychiatrist named Viktor Frankl, viz., "paradoxical intention". Fear creates fear of the fear, which creates more fear: that is the neurotic component/feedback mechanism of anxiety. The mind often does the opposite of what we want it to do, so trying to make it stop won't work, well on the contrary. Frankl says "As long as the patient stops fighting his obsessions and instead tries to ridicule them in an ironical way - by applying paradoxical intention - the vicious circle is cut, the symptom diminishes and finally atrophies." Instead of hyper-intention, which is counter-productive, you try to use the opposite intention: you face it, beg for it to come, try to feel it even more. The same happens when a person is trying to sleep: "(...) the hyper-intention to fall asleep, arising from anticipatory anxiety of not being able to do so, must be replaced by the paradoxical intention not to fall asleep, which soon will be followed by sleep"

I’m confused so which one is it? Passive as in the first two or this Active as this one and ask for more? Accept and allow seem opposite of run towards. Do you do one then the other? Both at same time? Are you passively uncomfortable or confidently uncomfortable which one is it? Doesn’t make sense.

We begin to wrongly think thoughts feelings and sensations are dangerous…then our nervous system starts to pump out adrenaline to help us fight all these as dangerous when there not….then not liking the anxiety that’s produced we start to get anxious about the anxiety…this is called a closed loop anxiety disorder..by accepting the non dangerous thoughts sensations and feelings as they truly are ( non dangerous) the nervous system will in time begin to calm down and desensitize…running towards the non dangerous symptoms helps the subconscious learn faster…engaging in regular life activities also helps the subconscious learn and retrain the brain that our sensations feelings and thoughts are not dangerous allowing the nervous system to remain more quiet. Ending future false activation

When you feel DPDR tell yourself it’s not dangerous and ask your alarm to stop sending adrenaline..don’t try to fight or end it Accept it… stop tension in body go limp…. Ask it to give you more… sit with it…. That is running towards it

Michelle I have such a hard time when Im ovulating or PMS. The derealization makes it worse during these times. Do I treat this the same just DARE thru it right? I have the book and the app I am more than halfway done with the book now. Thanks so much.

How do you run towards DP/DR? I often feel like I’m not doing it correctly. If anyone could give me an example that would be really helpful. Because I’m still not entirely grasping the concept. Thanks in advance.
