Nathan Englander is absolutely hilarious: I've seen a ton of Zadie Smith's interviews, and nobody splits her up like Englander does in this one (and me too).
Also, that image of Dave Wallace asking her about black hair will give me fits for weeks…
    --How does it work?
    --What? black hair?
--Yeah…I hope that's not offensive or anything I don't want to be a offensive or anything.
    [laughing]--No it's fine.
    --Geez. I'm sorry.
    [More laughing]--No, Really: it's fine.
    --I'm sorry.

Zadie's essay on David Foster Wallace is one of my favorites. She is so very observant and insightful and is also deeply empathetic, all of which are skills she brings to her readings of others and in the case of Wallace, to him as a person as well. In her essay on Wallace, his writing and thinking, she brought such clarity to the subject -- the sort that only an intelligent and deeply committed reader and fellow author could parse out and lend all the more depth to it. So many others have gotten Wallace wrong, and Zadie offered so many counterpoints and arguments that felt far more accurate and far better supported -- in the text and from personal observations. It's a wonderful piece.
