For the real rendang everyone has to go to sumatra barat. I tried rendang throughout indonesia, malaysia and singapore. The best is still the ones in sumatra barat. The birth place of rendang. Just the sauce with white rice is already heaven. You guys should come back to indonesia next year orso and explore east indonesian cuisine. Lombok(ayam taliwang recommended) sulawesi the city of makassar.. Nusa tenggara dish se'i is also something you must try.

i am an indonesian born and grew up in central java. i do like rendang. one time i had an opportunity to visit west sumatera (solok city) to visit relative. they cooked me rendang...and it was not for my tongue, javanese tongue, too salty! back home i almost never visit padang restaurant, i buy rendang at small food stall with javanese seller.. javanese, central javanese, prefer sweet. hahahaaa...

I am from Makassar. There are a lot of meat dishes like Coto, Konro, and Pallubasa. They are incredibly awesome. But when I was starting to eat Rendang, oh no. I think coto and others are nothing compared to Rendang.

Part of what makes Taiwan so great is that it is such a centrally located hub. It's easy access to all over Asia means that a lot of culture makes it's way there, along with it's food. Love Taiwan, hopefully will live there at some point. Only been three times, not nearly enough.

Hey Luke! Indonesian expat here living in the US. We're gonna have to anoint you an honorary Indonesian for your love of rendang and martabak manis (don't forget the "manis" part--straight martabak is savory and completely different). As somebody who has no access to rendang and martabak manis, the craving is real. You've definitely got some Indonesian blood in you now :)
More martabak manis trivia: in some parts of Indonesia it's called "terang bulan", which translates to "bright/full moon".
You and Sabrina are my favorite food travel TH-camrs. Excellent job with this series keeping things interesting while you're unable to travel abroad. Keep up the great work!

at first, i thought you're in Indonesia. but then i read the title. oh ok. it's amazing how they can sell goat satay. usually it's always chicken satay because goat isn't an ingredient you can get easily. the music is dangdut, btw. dangdut is the music of my country Luke. i hope you and Sabrina enjoyed the dancing experience :)

It must be a lot easier in Taiwan as it is a fairly common meat you can find in restaurants and street food. I'm glad we chose good music. Thanks so much for tuning in!

Kue (traditional snack) that you eat it's not mochi it is called Klepon, ball form filled with palm sugar...and the other one is called Dadar Gulung (kind of eggroll but the base ingredients is flour) filled with coconut mixed with palm sugar but sometimes filled with different such as chocolate etc.

I hope I will be able to enjoy this wonderful cuisine and hospitability again soon. I love Sate Ayam, Gado Gado, Sate Lilit, Pepes Ikan, Rendang, Bakso, Murtabak (the savory version, not the sweet one), Bebek Betutu, Pandang style meals etc. I am really missing those wonderful flavors and spices.

When i saw they use ''kraft'' cheese for the martabak it's no doubt that it would be heaven and very authentic! God I miss authentic indo street food. Unfortunately they don't have that Indonesian food with that authentic kick flavour here in France :( But great to see Taiwan has little Indonesia because it's very rare and has that much street food! One of the reasons why Taiwan is on top of the list to visit :D Keep up with your great videos Luke and Sabrina

Hi Luke and Sabrina, thanks for review the Indonesian street food in Taiwan . The Gado Gado is too pricey for usd5.07 . It only cost half the price in Malaysia . We do have Malaysian Restaurant in Vancouver. It pricy too , only is cheap to eat in Malaysia . In this video my best food will go to Satay.

    • @LukeMartin
      @LukeMartin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

How fortunate you are to live in a place where you can sample the world's cuisines without leaving the country! I live is a rural area of South Carolina, and have to travel over an hour just for something as "exotic" as fresh ramen. And in these parts, that IS considered exotic.

In the history of Taiwan, multiculturalism has always been in the hearts of our Taiwanese. 🌐
I also think that it is very happy to be able to taste the cuisine of many countries in my country.🍽
      This is Taiwan. 🇹🇼
Welcome to visit next time. ☺
Ps. I am Taiwanese, but my ancestors are Taiwanese aborigines, Chinese, Japanese and Hawaiians.

Some of the food like satay, kuih, rendang and murtabak manis (which we Malaysian called apom balik) are the same food that we consider as Malaysian cuisine. There has always been intense rivalry between Malaysia and Indonesia on matters related to food and culture. And we called gula jawa as gula melaka.
