  • Galesburg was founded by George Washington Gale, a Presbyterian minister from New York state who had formulated the concept of the manual labor college and first implemented it at the Oneida Institute near Utica, New York. In 1836 Gale publicized a subscription- and land purchase-based plan to found manual labor colleges in the Mississippi River valley. Land was purchased for this purpose in Knox County and in 1837 the first subscribers to the college-founding plan arrived and began to settle what would become Galesburg. Galesburg, populated from the first by abolitionists, was home to one of the first anti-slavery societies in Illinois and was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Galesburg became the birthplace of poet Carl Sandburg, artist Dorothea Tanning, and former Major League Baseball star Jim Sundberg.

Born and raised in Galesburg. Been here 61 yrs and I think we have a great little town. This is a nice video of our downtown area. Would be nice to see footage of the other side of now, down Henderson St and the Lake Storey area! Lincoln Park is another beautiful area of our town.

I studied at Knox from Sep1981 - Dec1985. The downtown used to be busy with vehicles. Used to ride a bus from downtown to Sandburg Mall. A very nice small town with friendly people.

It is a great town to explore. Nice people too - at least those few I met while wandering around.

I grew up there. It was a cool place pre 90's but fell apart after that. It's another small town that fell victim to corporate chains and factory labor outsourcing.

I was born there in late '30s and was gone 20 years later. In addition to population stagnation and loss of industry, the mall helped kill downtown and then Walmart helped kill the mall. Terrible to see so many vacant sites and empty buildings although the town does keep the remainder looking mostly respectable. My last visit in 2016. Hope the fallen bricks on the square sign have been repaired. Galesburg deserves better.
